Gold shares Tottenham Hotspur Stadium update

Writing on Twitter, reliable Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold has dropped an update regarding the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Lowdown: Tottenham touted as Champions League final host

The FA are currently in talks with UEFA over relocating this year’s Champions League final from Istanbul to England after Turkey was placed on the Covid-19 red list.

This prompted reports of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium being a possible destination for the event alongside Villa Park and St James’ Park (The Mirror).

The Latest: Alasdair Gold drops crucial update

Gold has shared new information regarding the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and whether or not Spurs’ home ground could feasibly host the final.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-story-roundup/” title=”Spurs story roundup!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Writing on Twitter, the reporter confirmed that Spurs are not in talks nor are they planning discussions. He explained: “Understand Spurs are not in talks to host the Champions League final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium or planning talks about it.”

The Verdict: Music to the ears of fans…

In what would have been humiliating to host a major European final for their London rivals, Tottenham fans may be relieved in hearing Gold’s crucial update regarding the plans.

As the FA and UEFA continue talks over relocating the final, it appears as if Spurs’ new state-of-the-art ground won’t be in contention to host it.

The governing bodies could have to arrange another destination given Turkey’s status, with officials telling both Manchester City and Chelsea supporters not to travel (football.london).

There was plenty of uproar regarding whether Spurs’ home could host the final, and Tottenham fans can breathe a sigh of relief that it won’t be at their ground.

Gers eye move for Hamer

Glasgow Rangers are interested in Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer according to Football League World.

The Lowdown: Gers plan for the future

With the Premiership title already wrapped up, the Gers can plan ahead for the future. As they prepare for a Champions League campaign next season, there are likely to be upgrades made to the playing squad.

In midfield, the likes of Glen Kamara are being linked with a move away (via The Daily Mail), while Ryan Jack is recovering from surgery (via Sky Sports). As such, a new midfielder could be on the radar.

The Latest: Gerrard eyes Hamer

It has therefore been reported that the 55-time Scottish champions are interested in signing Coventry’s Hamer.

They are one of a number of clubs said to be in pursuit, with Norwich, Brentford and even Premier League side Brighton also mentioned.

The Verdict: Plenty of talent

Hamer has enjoyed a good season with the Sky Blues this campaign, managing five goals and three assists in 43 games in all competitions (Transfermarkt). With 1.5 key passes and 1.4 tackles per game (WhoScored), he has proven to be a versatile midfielder and has even been compared to Steven Gerrard’s assistant manager Gary McAllister thanks to the quality of his deliveries (via The League Paper).

Currently valued at £1.8m (Transfermarkt) and with two years left on his contract, it could take a substantial bid for the Gers to prise him away from the Ricoh Arena. If they were able to capture him, though, they will be getting a player with plenty of ability – Ali Maxwell said on the EFL on Quest highlights show that Hamer is a ‘class act’ (via The Coventry Telegraph) – and who has plenty of years ahead of him at just 23 years of age.

In other news, this pundit believes Steven Gerrard will be delighted at transfer interest in one Rangers man.

Deane backs Brewster to come good

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Sheffield United striker Brian Deane has tipped Rhian Brewster to make an impact in the Championship next season.

Brewster has really struggled at Bramall Lane this term following his £23.5m move from Liverpool, failing to score a single Premier League goal for his new club.

However, back in the 2019/20 Championship campaign, the division Brewster will be playing in come August, the 21-year-old forward excelled.

During his loan spell at Swansea City, Brewster managed to score 11 goals in 22 appearances after arriving at the Liberty Stadium in January 2020, proving his credentials in that league. And Deane is expecting more of the same once he returns to English football’s second division.

When asked if Brewster could help fire Sheffield United back into the Premier League, Deane told FFC:

“I don’t see why not. He obviously is very comfortable in the Championship. I think the other thing you have to understand is that, you know, you can buy a player, but do you have the infrastructure and the support networks for somebody like that both on and off the pitch?”

While Brewster has certainly had a difficult time this season, the England U21 international is not the only Sheffield United striker who has struggled in front of goal.

Team-mate Oliver McBurnie has only managed to find the back of the net on a sole occasion in the current campaign.

Spurs and Bielsa: Good or bad for Kane?

Plenty have been calling for Tottenham Hotspur to appoint Marcelo Bielsa as Jose Mourinho’s successor this week…

What’s the word?

The ‘Special One’ was sacked after 17 months at the helm, with former midfielder Ryan Mason taking the reins until the end of the season, when Daniel Levy will look to appoint a permanent replacement.

Several names have been linked with the vacant role, ranging from mooted number one target Julian Naglesmann to Brendan Rodgers and even Athletic Bilbao’s Marcelino, but it is Bielsa’s name which is on the lips of many.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Dean Windass claimed the Leeds United boss “would be the one on the lips of Daniel Levy” and he’s not the only one thinking this.

Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara stoked the fire even more when he told talkSPORT: “I think he’d be absolutely brilliant and the fans would love him. If you can try and prise him away form there it’d be unbelievable.”

Meanwhile, according to Tony Cascarino in his column for The Times, Bielsa “could regenerate Tottenham”.

Could ruin Kane

The 65-year-old is a very intriguing option to consider, but there must be a few question marks over whether or not he’s actually the right fit for Levy and Tottenham.

He has exceeded expectations at Elland Road and has delivered a strong maiden season back in the Premier League, especially as he’s largely been deploying what is the bulk of his Championship title-winning squad.

They sit tied on points with Arsenal in 10th place and have won away to Manchester City and Leicester, who occupy two of the top three spots.

Mauricio Pochettino is a huge admirer of his, having played under him at Newell’s Old Boys. “For me, he’s a person I will always admire,” revealed the former Spurs manager. “He’s a genius. A person with charisma and a personality very different from us normal coaches, and that’s what makes him special.”

However, the bulk of this success has come down to the 65-year-old’s philosophy – a relentless press, the mantra of putting the side before self, and working on the method before the result.

This means a lot of work is put into training, such as his ‘murderball’ sessions which Leeds’ top scorer Patrick Bamford recently described as “about ten times harder than a [Premier League] game.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-manager-transfer-news-and-rumours” title=”Read this week’s latest Spurs manager news, transfer rumours and more!”]

It’s also claimed that Bielsa’s teams suffer from burnout in the final thirds of the season due to built-up fatigue because his high-intensity system places such serious physical demands on the players.

Ultimately, this may well spell serious trouble for Harry Kane, who suffered another ankle injury this week.

In 2019, BT Sport presenter Gary Lineker expressed his fears over the England skipper in an interview with Goal. He said: “It is always a worry when you get a recurring injury and there is clearly a little weakness in there,” adding: “The more you do it, the more you worry the weakness will become a problem.”

Given Bielsa’s ruthless training sessions, let alone his intense pressing from the front in matches, you’d have to have major concerns over the 27-year-old talisman if the Argentine replaces Mourinho.

Spurs rely heavily on the goalscoring and creative exploits of Kane; he has accounted for 60.7% of their 54 league goals this term through either scoring or setting them up.

There’s one other factor which should put Bielsa down the pecking order, as his Leeds side has often suffered from profligacy. Despite winning the Championship last term, the Whites ranked amongst the five worst teams for goal conversion at just 12.5%.

That hasn’t really risen in the Premier League, with Leeds only converting 8.1% of their 614 shots at goal, as per Transfermarkt. In some games they find the net three, four, even five times, but in others they draw a serious blank despite creating so many chances – Kane could well suffer as a result of that, too.

If Levy listens to the aforementioned calls, then he would risk ruining his superstar striker. As good as Bielsa is, he just isn’t the right man to replace Mourinho in N17.

AND in other news, Levy would be appointing Mourinho 2.0 in “stubborn” 62 y/o flop…

Hutton discusses Gers’ Helander

Former Glasgow Rangers defender Alan Hutton believes Filip Helander is too slow to play in the Premier League.

Hutton discusses Helander

Helander has been linked with a move to England recently (Sportbladet), with Leicester City and Aston Villa in particular believed to be interested in his services.

However, speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has raised concerns over his lack of pace. He said:

“That’s an interesting one. What do I think?

“I think he’s a very good player, up in Scotland I thought he’s done excellent.

“In some of the bigger games, yes, his positioning is good but he sometimes lacks a little bit of pace. I think that could always be a problem in the Premier League. The only thing I have in my mind is the pace of the Premier League.

“The level of everything: technical ability, strength of the game, pace of the game, you’re going up a few notches. It’s the one issue. Everything else, absolutely spot on.

“If you look at some of Steven Gerrard’s decisions as to who plays, it’s been Balogun who comes in because he has that extra yard of pace. If anything, that could be the stumbling block for me.”

Better for Rangers

Hutton may well have a point – the Sweden international could well struggle with the pace of the Premier League. It is a lot different than in Scotland, where teams often deploy a big, strong centre-forward rather than a player with plenty of speed.

Centre-backs lacking pace have succeeded south of the border – John Terry is one of the first who comes to mind – but that doesn’t mean everyone can make it. However, that may be better news for Rangers anyway. Helander has been an important player for Steven Gerrard since signing from Bologna for £3.5m in 2019 (The Scottish Sun) – the Gers are yet to lose a league game with him in the side (Transfermarkt). Given their success with the 27-year-old, why would the Gers want to let him leave?

In other news, Rangers are interested in this 27-goal striker.
