Manchester City: Fans fume over transfer report hinting at possible sale of Angelino

A number of Manchester City fans have voiced their displeasure with transfer reports indicating the potential sale of Angelino.

TransferMarkt UK reported that RB Leipzig, where the left-back is currently on loan, have until 15 June to trigger a clause to sign him permanently, with any such deal costing them €22m (£19.44m). Although this figure is likely to exceed the German club’s budget, Manchester City have indicated a willingness to negotiate, with the update shared on Twitter by @SuperbiaProelia.

The 23-year-old was previously on City’s books for five years before they re-signed him from PSV Eindhoven last summer, although he has only made 15 senior appearances for the Cityzens, having gone on loan several times since 2015. The latest of those saw him move to RB Leipzig in January, where he has made eight appearances, scoring once and setting up two goals.

Pep Guardiola currently has Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko as senior left-back options, while City have been linked with a possible move for Bayern Munich’s David Alaba (as per 90min.com) to potentially strengthen in that department.

However, these Manchester City fans want to see Angelino being given a fair chance to prove himself at the Etihad Stadium, with one supporter believing the club should “get rid of Mendy or Zinchenko” to make room for him:

Man City fans, do you think Angelino should be given a proper chance at the Etihad or would you be in favour of selling him to RB Leipzig? Join in the discussion by commenting below!

West Brom fans laud Romaine Sawyers after their 4-1 rout of Bristol City

West Bromwich Albion returned to the top of the Championship table with resounding win over Bristol City at the Hawthorns on Wednesday evening.

The Baggies saw four different names on the scoresheet as left-back Kieran Gibbs, Matheus Pereira, Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin all found the net on their way to three points.

Albion have now leapfrogged Leeds to open up a seven-point gap to third place.

One of Slaven Bilic’s regulars has once again come in for substantial praise on social media with many supporters singling out Romaine Sawyers for his performance in the heart of midfield.

‘Rolls-Royce,’ ‘wizard’ and ‘different gravy’ were just three phrases used to describe the 28-year-old’s showing with one member of the Hawthorns faithful going as far as calling him one of the bargains of the season.

A further fan claimed that he had no worries whenever Sawyers gets on the ball while another believed the midfielder was a standout as he didn’t misplace a pass all night.

Newcastle targeting Mbwana Samatta is the right route to take

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Newcastle have reportedly taken an interest in Genk striker Mbwana Samatta, according to BBC Sport.

What’s the latest?

The transfer window is lurking around the corner and Steve Bruce and his staff seem to have a clear strategy in mind with regard to recruitment, with the focus seemingly on a new striker.

Metz player Habibou Diallo had been linked with a move to the north-east earlier this week and Samatta is a similar target, as both could be brought in for a rather low price.

BBC Sport report that Samatta has a release clause of around £10m, a small outlay for the Magpies in comparison to Joelinton, who cost four times that amount in the summer.

West Ham are also reportedly tracking the 24-year-old, though, and if both clubs were to bid the required fee then Newcastle would have some persuading to do in order to attract him to St James’ Park.

Opposite to Joelinton

The price difference isn’t the only notable contrast between Samatta and the Brazilian – a quick look at their goalscoring record evidences that.

Joelinton scored just seven Bundesliga goals in 2018/19 and this year just has one to his name so far, but has assisted his side in other areas, most notably his effective hold-up play.

Bruce seemingly wants more, though, which is understandable given his top scorer is Jonjo Shelvey on two, with just nine scored from 11 games in the league.

Sambatta may be able to provide that difference. His eight goals in 18 games this term – adding to the 32 he scored last season – show he is a player who knows where the goal is, even proving a thorn in the side of Liverpool and RB Salzburg with goals against them in the Champions League in 2019/20.

His ability to score with both feet as well as his head should make him a good fit for the Premier League, but much of his success could be down to how Bruce utilises him, and given his current system it is likely he will have to settle for substitute appearances.

He would probably face a similar scenario at West Ham, and therefore he may be better suited moving to the Magpies, particularly as Joelinton’s place could be put under pressure if his current scoring rate continues.

Manchester City must stop Pep Guardiola from re-joining Bayern Munich

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is wanted by his old club Bayern Munich according to new reports from Sport Bild.

What’s the story?

Guardiola spent three seasons with Bayern and won the Bundesliga title in each of those campaigns. The Spaniard would also bag the club two German Cups and a FIFA Club World Cup during his spell with the Reds.

Now, it seems that the German giants are seeking a return for the legendary manager. Sport Bild (via Daily Mail) stated how Guardiola is amongst the shortlist of a new manager after the club sacked Niko Kovac. The reports also tell how the City manager’s family is unhappy in Manchester and have returned to Spain as a result.

Stop at nothing to keep him

Manchester City have had the money and the power to bring in almost any player they want for over 10 years now. In this time, successful managers such as Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini have come and gone.

Now, with Guardiola, City finally have a man they have been able to build record-breaking success with. Since the Spaniard arrived in 2016, the club have been able to go from strength to strength and establish itself as a legendary team for the record books.

The former Barcelona man has won back-to-back Premier League titles, which has also seen him claim two Manager of the Season awards. On top of this, an unrivalled domestic treble last season has further shown how important the 48-year-old is for the blue side of Manchester.

Plus, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool constantly improving, it is vital that City keep a man of equal capabilities at the helm. Klopp already has a Champions League title with Liverpool and may have a Premier League trophy to add as a result of the club’s position right now.

Guardiola is simply irreplaceable and if the club wants to finally reach the pinnacle of European football, keeping hold of him is absolutely essential.

Spurs should drop Serge Aurier in order to get a result against Liverpool

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Tottenham face a tough battle against Liverpool on Sunday and the selection of Serge Aurier could hinder their chances of success.

On the chalkboard

Spurs picked up a rare clean sheet in midweek – only their third of the season – but Mauricio Pochettino is far from solving Spurs’ defensive crisis and therefore there is a worry that his side could be exploited at the back.

They have conceded 12 goals in their previous five matches and the last occasion they came up against one of Europe’s top clubs, Bayern Munich, they fell to a 7-2 defeat.

Expressions Oozing believes “champagne football” is back flowing at Spurs in the video below…

With the quality Liverpool have in their front-three, and their recently rekindled goal threat – having put four past Genk on Wednesday – they pose a real threat to the visitors, and Aurier having to deal with the left flank pair of Sadio Mane and Andy Robertson is a troublesome thought.

The duo have produced a combined total of 15 goals and assists this term, with the Senegalese’s world-class ability highlighted by his nomination for the Ballon d’Or.

Aurier is not cut out for dealing with such a clever and talented player such as Mane, and therefore he must be dropped.

Vulnerability at the back

From a defensive perspective, Aurier has been a liability this season.

He has been caught out positionally too often. That has been exploited frequently by opposing teams – epitomised by Serge Gnabry scoring four for Bayern Munich at the beginning of the month – and Mane has the ability to replicate that.

Football London gave him a rating of 2/10 for that display, and the fact Juan Foyth put in a more accomplished display against the winger whilst playing at right-back for Argentina against Germant suggests he is the more solid defensive option.

The 21-year-old limited the winger to just the one goal in that match, and is therefore a more dependable option than the erratic Aurier.

The Ivory Coast international has been beaten by a dribble 1.3 times per game, on average, with his two quick-fire yellow cards against Southampton underlining his weakness – a sending off which could have cost his team.

Mane has achieved an average of 1.8 successful dribbles so far, and Robertson 1.1 in the league, which means if they are able to overload the wing like they often do – as shown best in Mane’s opening goal against Newcastle – then Spurs will probably concede.

As a result, it would be a risk to play Aurier, and Pochettino should exclude him if he wants to build on the performance and result against Red Star Belgrade.

Arsenal fans want Joe Willock to start against Manchester United

What team will Unai Emery choose to face Manchester United on Monday?

Arsenal travel to Old Trafford in search of a fourth successive victory, and they will fancy their chances against a side that lost 2-0 to West Ham in their last Premier League match and were also taken to penalties by League One team Rochdale in the League Cup last week.

Joe Willock could be amongst those to be given the nod after some impressive performances in the last few fixtures. He was on the scoresheet against both Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League and Nottingham Forest in the League Cup. After much promise, the 20-year-old is finally getting his chance this season, having already made seven appearances.

The Gunners supporters, it appears, want him to start against the Red Devils. They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Aston Villa fans are full of praise for John McGinn after Burnley display

John McGinn has adjusted well to life in the top-flight and Aston Villa fans continue to admonish him with praise.

He has three Premier League goals and one assist to his name from seven games but his tireless energy, skill in possession and determined nature hasn’t gone unnoticed, and was epitomised in his performance against Burnley.

Aston Villa’s official Twitter has put together some of his highlights from the match against the Clarets, and it underlines why the Scottish international is so integral to Dean Smith’s side.

He was vital in promotion last season with six goals and ten assists after arriving for only £2.7m in summer 2018, leading some to suggest he is a bargain.

Due to his form and all-round effective play, a number fans believe there will be interest in him from top-six clubs, with some hoping they don’t make a move for him in January.

McGinn staying at Villa could be integral to their chances of survival, and if they manage that he will be worth more than the £50m price tag being alluded to by one fan.

Here is some of the praise fans have been giving to the midfielder.

5 betting success stories that’ll make you say “Yes we can!”

Nowadays, gambling is a big business in the UK. Online casinos started to surpass land-based locations in popularity and that is because these can be accessed from the comfort of your home. On these websites, you can enjoy various casino games and more and more platforms provide its users with a sports betting feature.

According to the latest UKGC data available, just gambling on football was worth £1.4 billion in one year, while bookmakers made £333.4 million profits from 2015 to 2016. That sounds like a lot, but when reading about these figures, you can’t help wondering if your regular betting bloke also has something to gain from this industry. That’s why we decided to write about a handful of gambling success stories, to show you that yes, you can hit the jackpot big time if you play your cards right or if the good old Fortune chooses to smile on you.

The man that betted on his grandson and won

In 2000, Peter Edwards, a 49 years old Welsh man, went to the nearest William Hill shop and placed a bet of £50 that one day that his toddler grandson, Harry, will make the Wales National Football team. 13 years later, against all odds, Peter’s prediction proved to be right: Harry Wilson, aged 16 at the time, made his debut for Wales. This achievement got his gramps a £125,000 win, while Harry still plays at the highest level of British football, as a winger in the Premier League and also continues to be a reliable member of the Welsh national team.

The 61-year-old engineer that became a millionaire by betting £2

Winning large sums of money by betting on horse racing is no easy job, even for the most seasoned and lucky gamblers out there. One fateful day of 2011, Steve Whitley, a 61-year-old heating engineer, landed the big Jackpot at a horse racing competition. His presence there was a rare stroke of luck: he benefited from a promotion that won him and his friends some free tickets to the racecourse. One of his mates told him to get into the race towards the Jackpot, and so he did, betting £2 on six horses, one in each race. At the end of the day, his £2 bet on Lupita, the last horse standing, got him £1,445,671.20. Previously, Lupita had been beaten in all her 28 races, so imagine what sort of gods you need on your side to strike gold in such a manner.

How 50 pence can turn into one million pounds

In Britain, there’s something special about turning 60 years old. That’s when the pagan gods of Luck seem to operate. I imagine Tyche, the ancient Greek goddess of fortune, sitting in her penthouse on Mount Olympus, looking down on us mortals and saying something like: “oh, look, good old Fred over there in Yorkshire just reached his sixties, better throw some blind luck his way!” Because this is exactly what happened to Fred Crags, from Northern England, who placed an accumulator bet of 50 pence on horse races all over the country and, when he returned to his local William Hill agency to place another bet, he found out that his previous attempt got him the £1 million jackpot. One of the eight winning horses picked by him was “A Dream Come True”, who competed against odds of 2 million to one.

Roofer turned professional gambler

If you skim through dozens of news articles about amazing betting wins, you will inevitably see Mick Gibbs’ name mentioned. A roofer by day, skilled punter by night, he started his successful betting career back in 1999, when he earned over £150,000 by correctly predicting the final results for nine football games all over Europe. Not too shabby, isn’t it? Wait, there’s more. Throughout the years, he continued gambling and, in 2001, he staked 30 pence to forecast the victories in 15 games across the old continent. All of them went exactly as he predicted, including the 2001 UEFA Champions League Final, when Bayern Munich beat Valencia on penalty kicks. This made Gibbs £500,000 wealthier. He should consider changing his name to Lucky Gibbs.

The anonymous Maltese that beat 683,738/1 odds and became rich

8 years ago, a Maltese citizen who declined to make his identity public, won over 585,000 quid. How did he manage that, you ask? Quite easy: he placed a 19-match accumulator bet for the gargantuan sum of 80 pence. All his 19 predictions proved to be correct, including a Liverpool win over Chelsea, so now he’s pretty well off. He just had to beat 683,738/1 odds, a piece of cake!

Now, these tales are truly inspiring but it’s better to stay realistic and know that everything is possible – that includes losing. The Football FanCast team advises all its readers to always be gamble aware. But, these true stories are worth remembering because they offer a glimmer of hope to all sports and gambling fans out there. They also show that you don’t need to place some ludicrously high bets and waste all your savings to hit the big Jackpot.
