Gayle must respect Windies legacy – Richards

Sir Vivian Richards has called on Chris Gayle to put the West Indies contract dispute firmly behind him and lead his team in a manner befitting the region’s legacy

Andrew Miller10-Nov-2009Sir Vivian Richards has called on Chris Gayle to put the West Indies contract dispute firmly behind him and lead his team in a manner befitting the region’s legacy, as the team prepares to arrive in Australia on the eve of a Test campaign that will test the fragile peace that was brokered during meetings between the WICB and the players’ association last month. The team touches down in Australia on Wednesday, and Richards was cautiously optimistic that the reunited squad would put their recent troubles to one side. “The way it looks at the moment, it does suggest that there is a ceasefire,” he told Cricinfo. “But we all know what ceasefires are like. Let’s hope this is not a ceasefire like you get in the Middle East.”Gayle was a controversial choice as captain for the Australia tour, given his integral role in the stand-off with the board, and Daren Ganga was mentioned as a possible replacement following his inspirational leadership of Trinidad & Tobago in the recent Champions League. But there is no questioning Gayle’s status as the leading batsman in the Caribbean, and his absence was keenly felt earlier this year, as a second-string West Indies side slumped to an embarrassing home series defeat against Bangladesh, before being knocked out in the first round of the ICC Champions Trophy.””I think Daren Ganga is a good captain who thinks on his feet, and he’d have been quite appropriate, so presently the jury is out,” said Richards. “Gayle has got to go and show a different sort of attitude when he goes to Australia. He’s got to show that he wants to represent his people and represent them well, and not only them, but also the legacy that he’s representing. Let’s hope he has learned his lessons.”Gayle has been the subject of controversy throughout a torrid year, particularly during the unscheduled tour of England in May, when he arrived in the country barely 24 hours before the first Test at Lord’s, and went on to say in a newspaper interview that he “wouldn’t be so sad” if Test cricket died out. But having announced his availability for the Australia tour, Richards said he was prepared to take the captain’s declarations of full commitment at face value.”I take it on board when he says he feels pretty strong, even though he may not show the so-called enthusiasm,” said Richards. “Some people do things differently, and he’s one of those individuals who’s pretty laid back. But I still like to believe he wants to see West Indies cricket do well, and it’s up to him. He’s in the seat now to make that happen.”Even with a fully unified squad, the challenge that awaits West Indies would be arguably the toughest in the world game, and Richards – who made five Test tours of the country in the course of his illustrious career – knows from personal experience just what lies ahead.”An Australia tour can make or break a team,” he said. “They are like that. They are a pretty competitive bunch of folks. Over the years, I’ve always loved competing against the Aussies, because you knew they weren’t going to give you half-measures, they were going to give you their all. You knew to what capacity you were going to have to raise your level. And that, to me, was always interesting.”The Aussies were always ready and available verbally, whether with ball in hand or not. And I appreciated that aggressive stuff because I am a competitor myself, and these were the things that made me think. I hope that Gayle and the guys can deal with that, especially coming back from the dispute. Let’s hope that he [recognises] the job he has to do now, and makes sure that he gels that team, and hopefully, if this ceasefire lasts, builds a team that can be competitive in the future.”Few people give West Indies a realistic chance of putting up a fight against Australia – Brian Lara, who led their last tour to the country in 2005-06, predicted recently that they would receive a “hiding” – but it is not all doom and gloom in the Caribbean, thanks to the exploits of Trinidad & Tobago, who captured the imaginations with their enterprising performances in last month’s Champions League in India, in which they finished as runners-up.”The way things have played out in the media, a lot of people would think there’s nothing happening in the Caribbean,” said Richards. “But they have given us the light, and shown the world that our club structure is as good as any club structure around the world. Even though they didn’t win the tournament, to me, the message was already sent that West Indies cricket is still very much alive.”Nevertheless, Richards did not believe that Trinidad’s success as an individual island would lead to further ructions within the fabric of West Indies cricket. “I don’t think we have very far to go where those matters are concerned,” he said. “Barbados tried that once [in 1967] when they took on the Rest of the World, because of the number of players they had in the West Indies team at the time, and they took a hiding. They are going to need more volume, there are so many people around the Caribbean with so much talent. They must be given an opportunity. That’s the format that we have and that’s how I’d like it to remain.”Sir Vivian Richards is an ambassador for the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority

West Ham linked with Vitor Oliveira move

West Ham are reportedly interested in signing Braga youngster Vitor Oliveira, but they face competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham for his signature.

The Lowdown: Oliveira an emerging talent

The 21-year-old is an exciting young prospect in Portugal, scoring once in two Primera Liga starts so far this season. Also known as Vitinha (not the same one who played for Wolves last season), he struck four goals in Braga’s 6-0 hammering of Santa Clara at the weekend in the Taca de Portugal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Oliveira also averaged a 90.9% pass completion rate in his only Europa League appearance in 2021/22 to date, having three shots in that game.

The Portuguese starlet is being linked with a move to England, with West Ham seemingly in the mix to sign him.

The Latest: West Ham keen on move

According to Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], both West Ham and Spurs are keen on acquiring the Braga attacker’s signature.

The report claimed that the pair are ‘ready to battle’ to sign Oliveira, although it isn’t specified whether the transfer could happen in January or next summer.

The Verdict: Added squad depth

While Oliveira wouldn’t necessarily come in as a regular starter for West Ham, he is someone who could be a solid backup for Michail Antonio from January onwards.

There may be times when the Jamaica international, who has started 14 of the Irons’ 16 Premier League and Europa League games so far this term, needs to be given a rest as the campaign progresses, at which point the 21-year-old Portuguese gem could fill in and prove his worth.

The fact that he has scored eight goals in just 11 Braga appearances overall suggests that he could be ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

WICB-WIPA dispute may be resolved in August

The deadline for brokering a deal in the bitter dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) has been set for August. Shridath Ramphal, who has been given the responsibility of mediating negotiations, said it was critically important that an urgent solution was found, so that cricket in the region could return to a state of normalcy.Following his first meeting with both parties on Sunday, Ramphal said he believed the deadline would be possible to meet as both sides were keen on moving swiftly towards a resolution. “The parties, who were with me together over those many hours, and I share that view that we’ve got to get on with this quickly,” Ramphal told .”My own timeline – although the meeting hasn’t put a time on it – my own personal hope is that we can see this process through within August. By the end of August, this should be a process done and put behind us with a line drawn in the sand and with the future for West Indies cricket and the whole region, and indeed international sport [settled].”Ramphal, a former commonwealth secretary-general, was appointed to mediate, following a meeting between the WIPA, the WICB and Guyana president Bharrat Jagdeo, who is also chairman of the 15-nation trading bloc Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM), in Georgetown last Tuesday. The meeting ended the stand-off between WIPA and the board, because of which the first-choice West Indies players refused to play in the ongoing home series against Bangladesh, citing pay and contract issues as their main grievances.Ramphal also said the issue of West Indies cricket was too important for the mediation process to be treated lightly. “In Guyana, under the agreement that Jagdeo brokered as chairman of CARICOM, they called on the parties to proceed to mediation – in the language of the agreement – with expedition and I can understand why they did that,” Ramphal said.”West Indies cricket cannot afford a long stalemate, which is the situation we are in now. These issues that so trouble the game in the West Indies, trouble the game in the world and I’m sure that England and Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India – they are all looking. At this intimate process and hoping that the West Indies will get its act together and resume its prominent place in world cricket.”The impasse forced the selectors to hastily assemble a makeshift squad for the Bangladesh series and select a largely inexperienced 30-man provisional squad for the Champions Trophy in September. Though the first choice players have subsequently made themselves available, the WICB has opted not to revise the provisional squad.

Sunderland: Evans was shining light v Wednesday

Sunderland’s fall down the League One table continued on Tuesday as a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday left them fifth.

The Black Cats have lost their last three league matches, having lost 1-0 to Charlton and 5-1 to Rotherham in their two games prior to the trip to Hillsborough.

Tom Flanagan and Callum Doyle failed to deal with the danger through the middle and Theo Corbeanu found himself in acres of space to pick his spot and find the bottom corner. The second came with calls for handball as Florian Kamberi controlled the ball in the six-yard box and prodded past Ron-Thorben Hoffmann.

Wednesday sealed the three points in the second half as a scuffed shot fell perfectly for Lee Gregory to convert from close range to make it 3-0.

Despite the frustrating result, one player did come away from the match with an ounce of credit and was a shining light for Johnson – Corry Evans. The experienced beast was a standout in a disappointing performance from the Black Cats and the manager will surely have been left delighted with his display, in spite of the result.

Defensively, he was solid. Per SofaScore, he won 75% (6/8) of his individual duels on the pitch, including winning 100% (3/3) of his aerial duels. He also made a whopping seven interceptions, three tackles and one clearance, whilst only being dribbled past once in the 90 minutes.

Luke O’Nien and Dan Neil, meanwhile, managed three tackles and two interceptions combined between them in the other two central midfield positions. This suggests that Evans carried Sunderland in the middle of the park from a defensive standpoint and was let down by his teammates as Wednesday romped to a comfortable win.

Although, it is worth pointing out that he could have done more in possession. Per SofaScore, he only completed 72% of his attempted passes, whilst his midfield partners both completed 76% of theirs. This suggests that all three of them could have been better with the ball at their feet as they failed to achieve a high success rate with their passing, which is an area for improvement ahead of the next set of matches.

Despite the lapse passing, Evans’ performance was a shining light for Sunderland due to his tenacity in midfield and that could earn him a regular place in the starting XI in the coming weeks. He has only started five League One matches, but this display could aid his chances of adding to that number.

Van de Beek could join Everton in January

Fabrizio Romano is ‘sure’ Everton target Donny van de Beek ‘will leave’ Manchester United in January if his situation doesn’t improve.

The lowdown

Everton director of football Marcel Brands recently confirmed that Van de Beek was ‘on our list’ for the summer transfer window.

They hoped to sign him on loan in the final knockings of the window but ‘at the last minute it was cancelled’.

He said it was ‘hard to say’ at this point whether the Blues would revisit the potential move come January.

When Everton visited Old Trafford on Saturday, Van de Beek was unused substitute for the seventh time this season. In fact, he’s played a meagre six minutes in the Premier League so far (via Transfermarkt).

His only domestic starts of 2020/21 have come in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

The latest

Speaking to The United Stand, Romano said that ‘as of now’, Van de Beek is ‘planning to leave Manchester United in January’.

He could remain in the Premier League, ‘with Everton one of the clubs interested’, but there are also said to be suitors in Italy and Spain.

Barring a turnaround in his fortunes in the next ‘two-three months’, he’ll be departing.

The verdict

Van de Beek apparently nets £120,000 per week at Old Trafford, and it remains to be seen whether Everton could cover the entirety of the sum or whether a split with United would be necessary in a loan deal.

You can’t help but feel sorry for the Dutchman, who must have been given assurances during the transfer window that he had an important part to play.

As it’s transpired, he’s been given the number of minutes you’d expect for a promising Under-23 player, maybe even less than that.

You’d hope that United don’t stand in his way next time.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Connor Wickham injury

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans have been reacting to injury news regarding former striker Connor Wickham on social media.

The 28-year-old was let go by the Eagles over the summer after making 50 appearances for the club during a six-year stay.

Wickham has since joined Preston and made his first start at Deepdale in the week in the Carabao Cup.

However, Wickham, who missed over 140 Palace games through various injuries, had to be replaced after just seven minutes against Cheltenham Town with a hamstring problem.

It has since emerged that the centre-forward will need to see a specialist due to the injury, with head coach Frankie McAvoy claiming it ‘is not looking good’.

Palace fans react

The news regarding another injury for Wickham caught the attention of a number of Palace supporters on Tuesday evening. This is what some had to say in reply, with many sharing their sympathy towards the striker and one labelling it as ‘heartbreaking’.

Aston Villa: Preece makes Leon Bailey claim

Ashley Preece is ‘expecting’ Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey to return against Wolves on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Bailey’s injury

The 24-year-old actually injured himself when he scored his first goal for Villa following his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen. The Jamaican suffered a thigh strain against Everton and missed games with Manchester United and Tottenham as a result.

Villa were targeting a return following the international break against Wolves this weekend, and Preece believes that it could be on the cards.

The Latest: Preece’s tweet

Reliable reporter Preece took to Twitter on Monday evening to inform supporters of Bertrand Traore’s latest injury.

He was asked by one fan for any news on Bailey, to which he replied: “I’m expecting him to play some part on Saturday, Smith might not want to risk him from the start. We’ll wait and see. Due a team news update later this week.”

Preece’s post appeared to go under the radar, with just one retweet and four likes as of Tuesday morning.

The Verdict: Good news

Even if Dean Smith doesn’t risk Bailey from the start on Saturday and places him on the bench, it will still give Villa a big boost for the game against their Midlands rivals.

Bailey has already shown what he can do off the bench at Villa Park, and another starring cameo display this weekend could make all the difference if it is a tight match.

Hopefully he will be in and around the matchday squad on Saturday, but if he isn’t fully fit, he shouldn’t be risked.

Saints fans rage at B team result

Southampton fans were far from happy as their B side lost 3-2 to Birmingham City on Monday despite being 2-0 up.

For the Saints’ senior side, it has not been the best start to the season at all. Eight games in, they have won just one match during 90 minutes, an 8-0 victory over Newport County in the League Cup, and they are without a victory after six Premier League matches (Sky Sports).

Things are not going to better for the club’s development side, either. They were without a win in five matches in their top flight, and were well in with a chance of changing that form against Birmingham. However, despite a two-goal lead, they were unable to hold on, and eventually lost 3-2. As a result, they remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Southampton’s official Twitter account shared the result, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform below.

Tight race continues between Rajshahi and Barisal

Naeem Islam’s 87 rescued Rajshahi in the first innings © AFP

Even before the penultimate round of matches got underway, it was evident that the two-horse race between Barisal and Rajshahi would not be decided until the last week. There was added interest in this round as most of the Bangladesh internationals were turning out for the first time this season. The national selectors were keeping a close watch in what was the last chance for the players to stake their claim for the Test series against Sri Lanka. The weather, dominated by intense fog, ate up valuable playing time at Rajshahi. In the end, draws for the title contenders left hardly any gap at the top while Khulna, buoyed by the ‘one-off’ appearances of a couple of their internationals, played like defending champions for the first time and walloped Dhaka. At the Rajshahi Stadium only 30.3 overs were possible on day one following a delayed start due to fog. Rajshahi’s hopes of a strong beginning were quickly dashed by the Sylhet bowlers, who reduced them to 56 for 5 at stumps to justify the decision of captain Rajin Saleh to bowl first on the understandably damp wicket. Sylhet were then frustrated by Naeem Islam who initiated one of those very Rajshahi-like rearguards with 87 off 207 balls, and the mist which ruled out play on day three. Islam shared 83 for the sixth wicket and then put on 71 for the seventh wicket as Rajshahi’s innings finished on 264 on day two. Sylhet were expecting to bat only once but Rajshahi had other plans. Day four was all Rajshahi as opening bowler Delwar Hossain (5 for 33) and left-arm spinner Suhrawardi Shuvo (3 for 50) shot the visitors out for 127. Without captain Mithun Ali’s 57 Sylhet could have been really embarrassed. Rajshahi opener Jahurul Islam hit 53 off 44 as the home side went for quick runs and declared on 101 for 2 in 13.3 overs. Sylhet batted for 11 overs before close and reached 67 for 2.With only a draw looking possible in the Rajshahi game visitors Barisal were in a good position to seek advantage against Chittagong at the Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium. That wasn’t to be as they lost wickets in quick succession before and after the fifth wicket partnership of 87 between Roqibul Hassan (43) and Nasir Hossain (49) to end up with 244 after winning the toss. Chittagong resumed day two on a promising 52 for 1 but were all out for a disappointing 198 as the top order gave away wickets after getting set. Bangladesh batsman Roqibul starred with 77 in the Barisal second innings as Chittagong were set a challenging 313. At stumps on day three, the match was still wide open as the hosts reached 63 for 2. The last day’s play was delayed because of fog and Chittagong edged closer to an uplifting win thanks to Rezaul Karim’s 128 and Tariq Ahmed’s 54. It looked like a cakewalk before offspinner Nasir bowled the League’s highest run-getter Faisal Hossain (39) to reduce Chittagong to 269 for 4. They then almost lost the match, losing four wickets within the next 17 runs, and were 290 for 8 when it finished.Coach Jamie Siddons was in attendance as Khulna celebrated Shakib Al Hasan’s homecoming. The game against Dhaka in Khulna was not going to affect the title fight but it was nevertheless significant as Bangladesh stars Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib, Imrul Kayes, Mehrab Hossain jnr, Shahadat Hossain, and Mahbubul Alam were all involved along with a number of Bangladesh hopefuls. Khulna batted first and a 82-run stand between opener Kayes and Saghir Hossain for the second wicket gave them a solid start. Shakib made a 54-ball 59 and captain Tushar Imran also chipped in with a half-century as Khulna made 355 at 4.65 runs an over. Medium-pacer Ziaur Rahman took the wickets of Javed Omer (0) and Marshall Ayub to leave Dhaka on 38 for 2 on day one.

Shakib Al Hasan was in imperious form with the bat © AFP

There was no recovery on the second day and Ashraful’s 37 was the best effort in Dhaka’s 181 for 9 declared. Khulna’s second innings did not have the momentum of the first and they went into day three on 146 for 5. The next morning was a Shakib show; he resumed on 34 not out and with the help of some powerful pulls and cuts and forcing drives through the off raced to 129. No. 7 Raihan Anas made 90 in Khulna’s 352, a lead of 526. Saving the match was the best Dhaka could hope for but they lost Ashraful and Mehrab for ducks in successive overs to slump to 40 for 4. Javed’s 76 and Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 79 revived Dhaka who closed day three on 204 for 5. Mahmudullah led a lone battle as wickets tumbled around him the next morning. He reached his third ton in as many matches and finally fell for 152 to medium-pacer Robiul Islam, who is the second highest wicket-takers this season with 45. Robiul took 4 for 115 and Ziaur a five-for to bowl Dhaka out for 356.Player of the week – Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib has been in imperious form with the ball at the highest level but was at his batting best against Dhaka in what could be his only four-dayer for Khulna this year because of his international commitments. His 59 and 129 made the difference in the match and he outshone all the other stars in the match. “The series against South Africa was very, very tough and I learned a lot there and the confidence was up. This was much easier and it is always good to have some first-class runs under the belt when you prepare for a Test series,” said the 21-year-old Shakib, who is fast becoming the Bangladesh national team’s key man.
