Kanu lamenta saída de João Paulo: 'Jogador importantíssimo para nós'

MatériaMais Notícias

Kanu vem mostrando personalidade.

'Dangerous' Australia climb to top of the world

Four good years have culminated in Australia’s rise to No. 1 in the Test rankings, but their task now is to extend the lead without the likes of Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson and a few others

Brydon Coverdale24-Feb-20163:18

‘No. 1 a big motivation for us’ – Smith

A small crowd, a quiet Christchurch day in the last week of February, an Australian rise to No.1. It could have been Allan Border overtaking Sunil Gavaskar 23 years ago to become the leading run scorer in Tests. Instead it was Steven Smith’s men nudging ahead of India to become the top-ranked Test side in the world. For Border, it was the culmination of 14 years as a Test batsman; for Smith’s team it feels like the result of four good months. In fact, it is the culmination of four years of cricket, under not only Smith but his predecessor Michael Clarke. The current rankings stretch back to 2012, so they include Australia’s home Ashes whitewash in 2013-14 and their series win in South Africa that followed. After those triumphs Australia briefly jumped to No.1 under Clarke but that lasted a matter of months, and their task now is to not only hold their lead but extend it.And they must do so without Clarke, Brad Haddin, Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson, Chris Rogers and Ryan Harris, all of whom retired over the course of 2015. Those departures have left Australia with a significantly different looking side under Smith, and while they have started well by winning at home to New Zealand and West Indies and now away in New Zealand, other challenges await. They include a series in Sri Lanka later this year and then home Tests against South Africa and Pakistan, followed by arguably world cricket’s toughest challenge: an away Test series in India. How long Australia can hold the No.1 position remains to be seen, but under Smith and vice-captain David Warner, the initial signs have been good.”A lot of credit has got to be given to the guys who have recently retired as well,” Smith said after winning the second Test at Hagley Oval. “The ranking system goes for quite a while and those guys were quite a big part of our success as an Australian team. Having said that, the guys that have stepped up to the plate since those six big retirements have been outstanding and I’m really proud of the way the boys have been performing.”Such has been the success of Australia this summer that all members of their top five are averaging 50-plus since Smith officially succeeded Clarke as captain. The stars have arguably been Adam Voges and Usman Khawaja, but in the second Test against New Zealand it was Joe Burns who stepped up, earning his first Man-of-the-Match award for his 170 and 65.The value of his patient first-innings century should not be underestimated, given that New Zealand had made such a remarkable start to the Test through Brendon McCullum’s record 54-ball century on the first day. New Zealand reached 370 in their first innings, and it was the first time under Smith that the Australians had needed to fight back from being behind in the match in the early stages.”We did have to fight,” Smith said. “I thought that probably on the first day somewhere around 250-300 would probably be par on that wicket and they really took it away from us in that second session. That’s a credit to the way that both Brendon and Corey Anderson played.”They came out and really took the game on and we didn’t know what to do for a period of time there. But, credit to the guys the way we were able to fight back scoring 500 in our first innings again, I think that really sets the game up for you and I thought the guys responded really well.”Smith was also key to the turnaround, accompanying Burns for much of the second innings and registering his third century of the Test summer. Although Smith was charged with a Code of Conduct breach for his remonstration with umpire Ranmore Martinesz on the fourth day at Hagley Oval, the retiring McCullum said he believed that under Smith the Australians focused on “positive play” rather than verbals.”I think the team plays slightly differently to what they have done previously,” McCullum said. “Most Australian teams play the way their leader is. If you look at Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, they always take on a slight twist. Under Steve Smith, we’ve seen a very similar thing.”This series has been played in great spirits, I think, and the one back in Australia. I think Steve Smith has been a catalyst for that. He plays the game for the right reasons as well. He plays with his heart on his sleeve but he’s a very respectful guy and a wonderful cricketer. They’re No.1 in the world now and a lot of that is to do with his leadership and Darren Lehmann’s as well.”They probably skin the cat slightly differently. The majority of their focus is on positive play rather than necessarily some of the semantics of past eras. They go about their work in a nice manner and they play hard cricket but in the series that we’ve had, I don’t think they’ve ever looked to step over the line.”As a result of the victory in Christchurch, Smith remains undefeated as Test captain, with seven wins and four draws from his 11 games in charge – including when he was standing in for the injured Clarke in 2014-15. Under Smith, Australia have beaten New Zealand in four of five Tests this summer, and McCullum said Australia had the potential to remain at No.1 for some time.”I think so because they’ve got depth as we’ve seen in these two series,” McCullum said. “The bowling line-up in this series is quite different and they’ve all stepped up and that’s the beauty of Australian cricket. They’ve got so much depth that if they can get everyone heading in the same direction and their game-plans are simple, then they’re going to be dangerous no matter what.”That’s why they’ve been able to rise to No. 1 in the world. They’ve also got some outstanding batters, not necessarily the flashiest batters that Australia has produced but they’re churning out runs and when you do that your bowling attack becomes a lot more potent.”

Red hot Mumbai run into steady Super Kings

Mumbai Indians, who started poorly again, run into Chennai Super Kings, the original ‘slow-starters’ of the IPL who eventually become an antithesis to that image

Agarkar: Mumbai’s bowlers v CSK’s batsmen

Big pictureFor the second year in a row, Mumbai Indians have started poorly – they lost their first four games in IPL 2015 – before hiking up their performances in time to make the playoffs. After winning only two of their first seven matches, they raised their game in the middle stages when forms of some other teams began to taper off. They now run into Chennai Super Kings, the original ‘slow-starters’ of the IPL who eventually become an antithesis to that image. This year they reeled off six wins in seven games before winning only half as many in the next seven.Super Kings, though, have had the wood on Mumbai in the post-league stages, with a 4-1 record, including a seven-wicket win at Brabourne Stadium last year.  However, Super Kings haven’t looked unbeatable; their patchy record in the latter half of the league phase bears testimony to it. One area they would look to remedy is their finishing with the bat; notwithstanding Pawan Negi’s clean hitting lately, it’s a gap that hasn’t been plugged entirely. They would, however, derive confidence from having performed on the big stage several times in the past.Mumbai, on the other hand, don’t have to peer into the past too much, given how their form has progressively ebbed. They might not read too much into home-advantage, though, having won only four of their seven games at the Wankhede. Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma said his team approached their last league game, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, like the final. They would do well to carry on with the same mindset.Form guideChennai Super Kings WLWLW (last five matches, most recent first)
Mumbai Indians WWLWWHead-to-HeadThey have played each other 22 times with each side securing 11 wins apiece. In IPL 2015, too, they are squared on 1-1, with neither team winning their home game. Super Kings, backed by solid efforts from Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum and Suresh Raina, chased down 185 with 20 balls remaining in the Wankhede fixture, while Mumbai pulled off a heist in Chennai through Hardik Pandya’s blitz. In the spotlightMichael Hussey has spent practically the entire season as a substitute supplying drinks and cheering his team-mates on. He hasn’t had much game time, making only one run off four deliveries in his only match, against Kings XI Punjab. In the absence of McCullum, Super Kings’ leading run-maker, Hussey will have to click pretty much immediately.Lendl Simmons was Mumbai’s highest run-scorer in IPL 2014, and is second on the list this time around, trailing his captain by six runs. His contribution to Mumbai’s batting solidity has been remarkable not just for the unobtrusive manner in which he has racked up the runs. Did we mention his gravity-defying catches?Team newsAlex Hales joined the Mumbai squad ahead of the Sunrisers game, but Mumbai might be unwilling to tinker with a settled team.Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Lendl Simmons 2 Parthiv Patel (wk) 3 Rohit Sharma (capt) 4 Ambati Rayudu 5 Kieron Pollard 6 Hardik Pandya 7 Harbhajan Singh 8 J Suchith 9 Mitchell McClenaghan 10 Vinay Kumar 11 Lasith MalingaWith McCullum leaving for England on international duty, Hussey is the obvious choice to replace him.Chennai Super Kings (probable): 1 Dwayne Smith 2 Michael Hussey 3 Suresh Raina 4 Faf du Plessis 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk) 6 Pawan Negi  7 Dwayne Bravo 8 Ravindra Jadeja 9 R Ashwin 10 Ashish Nehra 11 Mohit Sharma/Ishwar PandeyPitch and conditionsThe Wankhede wicket has been loaded heavily in favour of the batsmen this season, with scores in excess of 170 achieved eight times. The weather is expected to be humid with no threat of rain.Stats and trivia Mumbai have lost their last two games against Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. They had won 4 straight games before that Dwayne Bravo has taken more IPL wickets (18) against Mumbai than any other bowler. Interestingly, he has also taken five wickets for Mumbai against Super Kings, making his 23 wickets in Mumbai-Super Kings encounters the most by any bowler Four fielders have taken 50-plus catches in the IPL, two from Super Kings (Raina and Bravo) and two from Mumbai (Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma)Quotes”We have finished one tournament and enter into a fresh tournament now. If we play to our potential this is what we can do.”
“It’s different because we always scrape through to the playoffs but we have always been consistent. Now we have had an easier road in and there is a huge difference.”

All-round New Zealand take 2-1 lead

A disciplined bowling performance, followed by fifties from Rachael Priest and Amy Satterthwaite, led New Zealand to a nine wicket win over England in the third ODI in Mount Maunganui

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Feb-2015
ScorecardAmy Satterthwaite took three wickets and scored 76* to sink England•ICCA disciplined bowling performance, followed by fifties from Rachel Priest and Amy Satterthwaite, steered New Zealand to a 2-1 lead, after a nine-wicket win over England in the third ODI in Mount Maunganui. In pursuit of 218, the hosts lost captain Suzie Bates for 39 in the 14th over. However, Priest and Satterwaite combined well to add 150, as New Zealand aced the chase in 48.4 overs. Anya Shrubsole picked up the only wicket to fall.Priest was philosophical about missing out on a maiden ton. “I was just happy to get the win, to be honest,” she said. “Amy was cruising it at the end, and I was just sitting back and watching – it was great. She batted so well, and she did that all the domestic season, too. For her to fight like that and come through at the end was fantastic for her.”Opting to bat, England had a fine start reaching 50 in 13.1 overs. Three overs later, Erin Bermingham broke the opening stand, having Charlotte Edwards caught behind for 40. Heather Knight carried on to register a seventh ODI fifty. The middle-order, though, caved in as England went from 133 for 2 to 159 for 6, Natalie Sciver and Knight perishing in successive overs.Knight made 79 off 119 balls – her career-best score – before becoming Bermingham’s third victim. The legspinner was the best bowler for New Zealand, claiming figures of 10-0-35-2. Satterthwaite picked up three wickets to dismantle the middle order, capping off a productive outing. The lower order rallied briefly through No. 7 Katherine Brunt and No. 9 Anya Shrubsole, as England finished on 217 for 9. However, it was not enough to pose a challenge to New Zealand. The teams will now head to Whangarei for the first two T20Is, before rounding off the series with a third T20I and two more ODIs in Lincoln.

A situação do Bento é preocupante.

Londrina: Matheus Albino; Raí Ramos, Diogo Silva, Silvio (Léo Rigo) e Felipe Vieira; Germano, Denner (Neris) e Arthur Caculé; Paulinho Moccelin, Safira e Anderson Oliveira. Técnico: Claudio Tencati.

São Bento: Gabriel Félix; Pablo, Wesley, Elton, Mansur; Vinícius Kiss, Fabio Bahia e Rodolfo; Minho, Paulinho Bóia e Zé Roberto. Técnico: Doriva.

Iqbal alleges conspiracy over exclusion

Faisal Iqbal, the Pakistan middle-order batsman, is worried over his future after being denied a central contract and believes he has wrongly been kept out of the team

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jul-2014

Faisal Iqbal, the Pakistan middle-order batsman, has questioned his continued exclusion from the national side.He was recently denied a PCB contract and was overlooked for the tour of Sri Lanka, leaving his future in doubt. Iqbal has played only 26 Tests in a career that began in 2001 and last featured in a Pakistan side in 2010. He was among the touring party in 2012 to Sri Lanka and to Zimbabwe in 2013, but could not break into the XI.”I have a simple question: why is Faisal Iqbal being held from playing for Pakistan team,” he asked on . “Who is the power behind my exclusion and why are they not allowing me to play? Since my debut [in 2001] players who debuted around me went playing on and on and even had thousands of comeback in the side. And I was dropped after my third comeback without even playing me in the XI.”What am I going to do? I am scoring runs in domestic cricket, but gradually I have even been dropped from the central contracts as well so where should I go and put my case?” he said. “I am a senior player and have served the country and this should not be the way I should be treated.”Iqbal has a history of impressing on his return. In 2002, he scored 83 against Australia on his first innings back. Then came 139 against India – a highlight of his career – which guided Pakistan to a 341-run victory in Karachi in 2006. Pakistan’s tour to Sri lanka in 2009 was the stage for his third comeback, when he scored a fifty. Iqbal’s problem, though, has been consistency, which had often led to his exclusion.”I don’t want to criticise the system of Pakistan cricket. I have all due respect as I am here only because of the cricket I have played for Pakistan. I simply fail to understand why I am be being pushed back. Is there a conspiracy because of I am the nephew of Javed Miandad? Nobody is ready to understand and I am very frustrated at not being given answers.”Iqbal, 32, had a prolific career at junior level, since making the Under-15 side but his time with the seniors has, for the most part, been marred by allegations of nepotism. His career coincided with Mohammad Yousuf and Inzamam-ul-Haq being in their prime, and was never able to cement his place in the team. His domestic figures are impressive with 10970 runs at 40.33 in 193 matches to go along with 5136 at 41.74 in List A matches. However, he fell short of those standards last season with only 538 runs at 35.86; 32 other batsmen had done better.”I am always made a fool and asked to go back to scratch and play domestic cricket again and again. Am I only here to play domestic cricket? When will I be given due reward for my performance in domestic? If I was good enough to recalled in 2012, then why I was reduced to the bench and dropped without even giving me an opportunity. I am always taught to focus on ground performance but now I realise that I have been fooled all these years. I wanted to be heard to those who are the concerned (PCB and selectors).””I knew there was a conspiracy and that with time they will drop me from from every format and will later cut me from the central contract. Now what will I do, probably sell mangoes in garden and perform there to win place.”

Defending champions possess measured belief

Overview

Darren Sammy has developed into one of finest finishers in Twenty20•WICB Media

The defending champions are in pretty good shape. One could say they departed the Caribbean and arrived in Bangladesh with some of a swagger; not over-confidence, just a measured belief in what they can achieve as a T20 side.Although they are missing one player who would walk into the starting XI – Kieron Pollard – and another who would certainly be in the squad – Kemar Roach – West Indies retain the fundamentals of a powerful Twenty20 side. The batting is packed with boundary strikers, from Chris Gayle down to Darren Sammy, while Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree are a potent spin combination. Pace off the ball can also be provided by the cutters of Sammy, Dwayne Bravo and Krishmar Santokie, along with the darts of Gayle and Marlon Samuels. Sammy retains the captaincy of the T20 side, having been demoted in favour of Bravo in one-day cricket, and he is probably the most emotional captain on display. There remains a concern that too much emphasis is being placed on T20 cricket for West Indies, hampering any hopes of a meaningful revival in their Test and, to a lesser extent, one-day cricket. There certainly appears to be a correlation – the shorter the format, the more vibrant West Indies become. The decisions of some individuals always comes under the spotlight, but before this tournament Gayle was at pains to insist that nothing comes ahead of representing the region. Their success 18 months ago brought joy on and off the field; if they become the first team to successfully defend a World T20 title you know it will be done with just as much flair.

Key players

It is hard to look past the skills of Sunil Narine particularly given the role spinners are likely to play through the tournament. His economy rate continues to hover at below a run-a-ball. Away from the power of their top order, Darren Sammy has developed into one of finest finishers in this format of the game. No mathematically achievable total is safe if he’s there at the end.

Surprise package

It has been quite a few weeks for left-arm swing bowler Krishmar Santokie: signed up for the IPL, recalled to West Indies colours and a Man-of-the-Match award against England. At times England played him as though they were not sure what they were facing and that could well be his secret weapon at the World T20.

Weakness

Although West Indies’ fielding can be as good as anyone, it also retains a fallibility which can show itself in both the groundwork and the catching. Such moments can prove costly in tournament cricket. Also, there will be crossed fingers over the fitness of Gayle given his recent problems. West Indies have power hitters beside him, but his presence at the top gives an aura to the side that is not easily reproduced.

World T20 history

The were a unique way to celebrate the title last time out. It was by far their best World T20 outing although the prize was secured by winning just three matches outright but there was also a Super Over success.

Recent form

They played some impressive T20 cricket to secure the series against England 2-1 and it marked a timely lift in confidence after sharing a series 1-1 with Ireland and suffering defeats in New Zealand.
