Aston Villa must sign Fulham’s Zambo Anguissa

Aston Villa have been handed a potential boost in their chase for Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa this summer amid a major transfer update.

What’s the story?

Following the Cottagers’ relegation from the Premier League last season, it would be no surprise to see a number of their key players look to move on.

According to previous reports from The Daily Mail, Dean Smith’s Villa side are monitoring developments over Anguissa ahead of a potential move, with Fulham braced for offers for many of their key men.

And now, The Athletic have revealed that Anguissa was left out of the squad to face Middlesbrough in the Championship at the weekend due to his desire to leave.

It’s added that “the 25-year-old midfielder is subject to interest from clubs in Italy, Spain and the Premier League and has made it clear that he does not want to play in the Championship.”

Premier League proven

Joachim Andersen, his teammate at Fulham, has raved about about the £22.5m-rated powerhouse, saying: “He’s a top player. He’s a machine in the midfield. He’s winning so many balls and driving forward with it.”

And, when you compare the key stats between Anguissa and Villa’s own Douglas Luiz, it’s the former who comes out on top.

As per Whoscored, he is defensively far stronger than his Brazilian counterpart, averaging more tackles and interceptions per game in the Premier League, and also committing far fewer fouls too – something Villa fans will be relieved to know after Luiz’s mindless challenge to give away a penalty against Manchester United at the weekend.

And, as Andersen said, Anguissa is also adept at driving the ball forward, averaging a whopping 2.7 dribbles per game – far higher than Luiz, and actually only slightly below Jack Grealish with 2.8 in the entire Villa squad.

It’s exactly why Villa should now be pouncing on a move for Anguissa, especially with this recent development. Johan Lange must pounce now.

The fact Anguissa was left out and has made it clear he wants to move, has given Villa the perfect chance to swoop.

Meanwhile, Villa could sign a dream Jack Grealish replacement in this star…

Karthik fifty gives Delhi renewed hope

Dinesh Karthik and the Delhi Daredevils’ misfiring middle order came good when it mattered to clinch a thrilling five-wicket victory and keep their semi-finals hopes alive. Coming in with the team wobbling at 89 for 4, Karthik blitzed a classy 32-ball 56 to take Delhi past the Mumbai Indians’ 176 with one ball to spare.Mumbai are three points behind Delhi and two behind the Chennai Super Kings, who have a game against the lowly Deccan Chargers, and may need to win both their remaining matches, including a tough one away against table-topping Rajasthan Royals, to make it to the final four. After Dwayne Smith took two-in-two in the eleventh over to put Mumbai on top, Karthik and Manoj Tiwary kept Delhi afloat with a 41-run stand. Karthik, using his feet to disconcert the slower bowlers, was the aggressor – he carved Smith past mid-off for four and then paddle-scooped him past short fine leg for another and then carted a Jaysuriya full toss into the crowd behind midwicket to ensure Delhi kept pace with the asking rate.Tiwary was run-out for a well-made 36 following a mix-up. At that stage, 47 were needed off 30 as Karthik was joined by Farveez Maharoof, whose big-hitting has already helped Delhi recover from several middle-order collapses. After a tidy over from Ashish Nehra, fifteen runs came off the next over from Dhawal Kulkarni, including a lovely six over backward square leg and an extra-cover drive for four. A down-the-pitch heave to the midwicket boundary off Jayasuriya and a delightful straight six off Andre Nel brought the equation down to eight from the final over. Two singles came off the first three balls as the tension ratcheted up. Maharoof, though, kept his nerve and smashed the fourth ball to the midwicket boundary and cut the next one to point for four to bring up the victory and leave the home fans delirious.Delhi will be even more satisfied with the win as their big guns fell early – Virender Sehwag provided a frenetic start with three fours and a rasping front-foot pull for six in the first over but was bowled by Nehra and Gautam Gambhir showed glimpses of the form that has made him the tournament’s leading scorer before skying a catch to Smith at midwicket.Shikhar Dhawan and Tiwary kept the required-rate in check collecting singles and punishing anything either wide or overpitched. Aided by some shoddy fielding, they had calmly progressed to 89 for 2 when Smith removed Dhawan and Tillakaratne Dilshan off successive deliveries to bring the Man of the Match Karthik to the crease. Before Karthik’s intervention, the leading candidate for Man of the Match was Jayasuriya. His assault gave Mumbai an explosive start to their innings but his team-mates failed to build on it and a fightback, led by Yo Mahesh who snared four wickets, from Delhi restricted them. Jayasuriya, typically scoring heavily square of the wicket, took Brett Geeves to task – a couple of leg-side boundaries in his first over were followed by an effortless slice over backward point for six and a powerful across-the-line shot past long-on for four.Mahesh was brought into the attack but two towering sixes and an edge past the wicketkeeper for four kept the run-rate galloping. Delhi’s semi-final hopes were further dented when Karthik, standing up to Maharoof, missed a leg-side stumping with Tendulkar overbalancing. The next ball was disdainfully swatted for six by Jayasuriya and the score read 70 for no loss after seven. The breakthrough came when Tendulkar inside-edged Mahesh onto his stumps and, with Maharoof sending down a clever mix of slower balls and yorkers, the brakes were applied. Amit Mishra, whose googlies the batsmen found hard to read, kept the runs in check but a poor over from Geeves released the pressure. Just as Mumbai seemed to have regained their momentum, they were again pegged back by Mahesh, who removed Smith. Mishra then picked up the big wicket of Jayasuriya, who perished attempting his sixth six and when the hard-hitting Abhishek Nayar fell four balls later, Mumbai had slipped to 114 for 4.It required Robin Uthappa’s stunning 23-ball 46 to lift them to a competitive score. Uthappa, who has flickered through this tournament, combined some delicate glides past third man with his signature paddle sweeps as well as some full-blooded blows over midwicket and long-on to plunder 31 runs off the last two overs.Uthappa’s late hitting, though, was overshadowed by Karthik’s and the win means Delhi will make it to the semi-finals if Chennai or Mumbai lose any of their remaining games.

Aston Villa not pursuing Todd Cantwell

An update has emerged regarding Aston Villa’s interest in Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell.

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s Michael Bailey has stated that Aston Villa will not be pursuing a deal for the 23-year-old this summer. He was omitted from Norwich’s pre-season friendly clash with Newcastle due to a knock, with Bailey tweeting to confirm that it was because of a challenge in training and that he will not be joining Villa in this window.

This comes after Football Insider reported earlier this month that Villa have been working on a transfer for the youngster. It was also reported that Norwich could demand as much as £50m for Cantwell.

Fans must be relieved

Aston Villa fans must be relieved to read this update, as it means that the club will not make an expensive blunder before the end of the transfer window.

It is worth noting the wording in Bailey’s tweet. He stated that Villa will not be signing the Englishman in ‘this window’, which doesn’t mean that they are not interested in him. It suggests that the report from Football Insider may have been correct, but Johan Lange later decided against potentially splashing £50m on him, shelving the interest for a future transfer window.

Cantwell has one year left on his Norwich deal, but the Canaries have an option to extend it by a further year. This means that he is likely to have 12 months left by the time next summer comes around, and that could allow Villa to swoop in at a more attractive price, as the East Anglian club would be facing the prospect of losing him on a free transfer in 2023 if he opts against extending his contract.

Villa supporters must therefore be relieved that Lange has made the decision not to sign him this month. Why spend £50m on a player whose contract situation could significantly reduce that fee next year? This appears to be a sensible decision from the Villa chief and one which should get fans’ approval.

Former Norwich player and coach Darren Huckerby once admitted that Cantwell could be intimidated by the opposition players. He told The Athletic: “He was always the most gifted, but needed more work mentally than the others. He would admit it himself he could get intimidated by other players, and it’s great to see where he is now, because five years ago you might have said it would be touch and go.”

His statistics in comparison to Emi Buendia also suggest that £50m would be a sizeable overpayment from Villa. The Argentine, who cost the club £33m, managed nine more goals and 10 more assists than Cantwell whilst playing for Norwich in the Championship last term. Therefore, Villa should not be paying £17m more for the English playmaker than they did for Buendia.

AND in other news, Lange must secure Aston Villa swoop for “hardworking” gem who “will go very far”…

Mr Anderson talks about current issues

At the County Ground this morning Peter Anderson the Somerset chief executive talked about several current issues. With regard to the second overseas player for 2003 the chief executive told me: "We have been talking to three overseas bowlers and at the moment West Indian Nixon McLean is favourite."He continued: "However he has been playing for Natal in the winter and the West Indies have had a rule which has been that if players didn’t play in the Red Stripe competition they couldn’t play for their country. This has now been rescinded and if he plays well for Natal he could be picked for the West Indies. We expect to confirm the situation next month."Regarding the issue of captaincy the chief told me that Mike Burns, who was the only Ciderman to score 1000 runs in the championship this season was the likely replacement for Jamie Cox for 2003, but this would not be confirmed until early October. With regard to the reported resignation of Phil Frost, Mr Anderson told me: "Verbally he has told me that he is leaving, but he has not confirmed this in writing so at present he still remains the head groundsman at the County Ground."

Leeds can sign Casilla’s heir in Woodman

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa can sign a dream Kiko Casilla replacement in Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

What’s the story?

The Yorkshire club confirmed in recent days that Casilla has jetted back to his native Spain to join Elche on a season-long loan, thus leaving them short of a number two goalkeeper ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, the Whites are targeting a move for Magpies shot-stopper Woodman, with the club said to be “admirers” of the 6 foot 2 ace.

Time’s up for Casilla

Given his off-field controversy, along with Illan Meslier’s emergence onto the scene as Leeds’ number one, it’s safe to say things haven’t gone quite so well for Casilla over these past couple of years.

Speaking after Leeds’ FA Cup loss to Crawley Town last season, journalist Daniel Storey raged: “I think Kiko Casilla was the other game-changer in a negative sense because I don’t think he should be playing for Leeds for non-football reasons, but he probably shouldn’t be playing for Leeds for football reasons after today.”

Meanwhile, Leeds TV podcaster Oscar Mario simply branded him a “complete liability”.

The £9m-rated Woodman, on the other hand, has previously been described as “unbelievable” by Lee Clark, who coached him at Kilmarnock and was very effusive in his praise of how he has developed.

He told The Athletic: “I knew he was an outstanding young keeper and had all the attributes. The tough thing was I had an experienced goalkeeper in Jamie MacDonald in the team — that was causing one or two issues in terms of what I wanted to do.

“But I knew I was bringing a talented goalkeeper in. Freddie’s communication, his shot-stopping and his distribution skills are second to none. He’s an unbelievable professional and works extremely hard at his game.”

Woodman didn’t miss a single game last season for Swansea during his loan spell with the Championship club, keeping 21 clean sheets in his 48 outings for the Swans.

The goalkeeper’s form in recent years has also earned calls for him to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England setup – a real indication of the kind of high esteem in which he is held.

At only 24, he’s a decade younger than Casilla – who earns £40,000 per week – and would offer Bielsa a much fresher option to compete with Meslier for the number one jersey at Elland Road.

With Casilla’s contract at Leeds only expiring in the summer of 2023, a loan spell at Elche won’t see him depart for good when he returns next year. However, if the Whites manage to land Woodman this summer, then Bielsa can finally let Casilla go permanently.

Meanwhile, Adam Pope has dropped an exciting Leeds United update…

Patson Daka snubs West Ham

RB Salzburg striker Patson Daka has turned down the advances of West Ham United, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Daka was prolific for the Austrian champions last season, scoring 27 goals in 28 league appearances. On average, he netted every 72 minutes.

The Zambian international is valued at £19.8million by Transfermarkt and has three years remaining on his contract.

The report states that West Ham are among the clubs to have registered their interest in signing the 22-year-old.

The latest

Daka’s camp has communicated the player’s intention to move to a higher-level club.

As well as West Ham, who have qualified for next season’s Europa League, he has rejected Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.

The Irons are in the market for a striker who can offer ‘cover and competition’ for Michail Antonio.

‘Many other’ Premier League teams are hopeful of landing Daka, with a recruitment source revealing the Hammers’ failed interest.

The verdict

This is a blow for West Ham, who would have hoped that European qualification would have boosted their pulling power.

However, Daka may not quite as good as his league record suggests. He failed to score in the Champions League group stages or the Europa League Round of 32 this season, for instance, so perhaps is benefitting from player in a much inferior domestic league.

While suitors will be hoping that he can emulate Erling Haaland in thriving after leaving Austria, he could just as easily struggle like former team-mates Takumi Minamino and Hee-chan Hwang, who failed to score a league goal for RB Leipzig in 2020/21.

In other news, West Ham fans reacted to this development in their pursuit of a centre-back.
