Hutton discusses Gers’ Helander

Former Glasgow Rangers defender Alan Hutton believes Filip Helander is too slow to play in the Premier League.

Hutton discusses Helander

Helander has been linked with a move to England recently (Sportbladet), with Leicester City and Aston Villa in particular believed to be interested in his services.

However, speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has raised concerns over his lack of pace. He said:

“That’s an interesting one. What do I think?

“I think he’s a very good player, up in Scotland I thought he’s done excellent.

“In some of the bigger games, yes, his positioning is good but he sometimes lacks a little bit of pace. I think that could always be a problem in the Premier League. The only thing I have in my mind is the pace of the Premier League.

“The level of everything: technical ability, strength of the game, pace of the game, you’re going up a few notches. It’s the one issue. Everything else, absolutely spot on.

“If you look at some of Steven Gerrard’s decisions as to who plays, it’s been Balogun who comes in because he has that extra yard of pace. If anything, that could be the stumbling block for me.”

Better for Rangers

Hutton may well have a point – the Sweden international could well struggle with the pace of the Premier League. It is a lot different than in Scotland, where teams often deploy a big, strong centre-forward rather than a player with plenty of speed.

Centre-backs lacking pace have succeeded south of the border – John Terry is one of the first who comes to mind – but that doesn’t mean everyone can make it. However, that may be better news for Rangers anyway. Helander has been an important player for Steven Gerrard since signing from Bologna for £3.5m in 2019 (The Scottish Sun) – the Gers are yet to lose a league game with him in the side (Transfermarkt). Given their success with the 27-year-old, why would the Gers want to let him leave?

West Ham fans buzz over Ex update

According to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, via West Ham News, the Hammers do in fact want to sign Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal this summer with the player himself also desiring an east London stay – and it is also believed an agreement could be reached in the region of £15 million.

Numerous reports have linked Lingard with a permanent switch to the London Stadium at the end of this season, especially after an impressive start to life under manager David Moyes, with Spanish outlet Fichajes even claiming that talks have taken place.

Providing his update on the saga, ExWHUemployee has revealed that the Irons and GSB are in fact keen on securing Lingard with the Englishman also wanting to stay with West Ham.

On top of these promising claims, Ex also believes that a deal could be reached in the region of £15m – arguably a small price to pay for a player who has hit the ground running.

As a result, it’s safe to say many West Ham fans are buzzing – find out more here.

West Ham must make Andre Silva swoop

West Ham United are closing in on the signing of Jesse Lingard on loan from Manchester United.

According to Sky Sports, the 28-year-old attacker rejected advances from other Premier League teams and is set to complete a move to the London Stadium shortly.

With only four days to go until the deadline, David Gold, David Sullivan, and Karen Brady must top off their January window by fulfilling one of David Moyes’ biggest needs.

A new striker.

The Hammers have been linked with an array of names over the past three-and-a-half weeks, but one name sticks out the best option.

Earlier this week, the Daily Mail claimed Frankfurt talisman Andre Silva was among the options on Moyes’ transfer shortlist, and it’s easy to see why given his form this campaign.

The 25-year-old Portugal international has delivered 15 goals from 19 appearances in all competitions, via Transfermarkt, averaging a goal every 109 minutes.

West Ham may find themselves in a European spot right now, but defensive midfielder Tomas Soucek is their top-goalscorer with seven for the season. His imposing presence has been a big threat from set-pieces.

Michail Antonio isn’t too far behind with five goals in 12 appearances.

However, recent injuries have put the spotlight on the need for a new frontline addition as Moyes let mega-money flop Sebastian Haller depart for Ajax in a £20m deal at the start of the month.

Some in east London may reserve judgement on Silva, after all, the last signing from the very same Bundesliga outfit hardly set the ground alight, but hold fire as the prolific 6 foot 1 marksman is vastly different.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=”Read this week’s latest West Ham news, transfer rumours and more…”]

It’s not often a player receives substantial praise from one of the game’s greatest-ever players, but Silva has.

During his time at Porto, he caught international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo’s attention, who claimed the Portuguese striker was “doing a phenomenal job.”

Whilst Silva has also been likened to Robert Lewandowski in recent weeks.

His current boss Adi Hutter said: “Andre Silva is the solo forward up top, but he does it really well. His composure on penalties reminds me of Robert Lewandowski, who always turns ice cold.”

Indeed, Moyes deploys a similar system at the Irons – a solitary man upfront – and as evident by those comments and his record this term, the 37-cap beast can fulfil that role immensely, and that makes him vastly different to Haller.

As Portuguese football expert and journalist Tom Kundert told ESPN FC in 2016, Silva is a “goal machine” – he’s found the net wherever he’s been, only dipping below a ten-goal total for a season once in his career, unlike the one-season wonder exploits of the departed Hammers flop.

West Ham could create a dream January duo by securing Silva after Lingard’s arrival. Having the England wizard sat behind him in the no.10 role or on the right-flank could pay serious dividends.

Last term, Lingard, who has been likened to Andres Iniesta, averaged 1.9 key passes per 90, proving his creative exploits. That is a number that isn’t matched by any of Moyes’ current attacking midfield options.

GSB must secure this late double-swoop before Monday’s deadline. Moyes would have a dream partnership if he can get the duo on the same wavelength.

Just imagine Silva and Lingard with a supporting cast of Declan Rice, Soucek, Said Benrahma and Antonio.

Why Man City should sign Lamptey

Manchester City are reportedly taking an interest in Brighton right-back Tariq Lamptey and if signed, he could prove to be the ideal long-term replacement for Kyle Walker in Pep Guardiola’s side.

The young defender signed a new long-term contract with the Seagulls last week, which sees him contracted there until 2025, but a report from The Athletic suggests that Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton are unlikely to be deterred by this, in their hopes of signing the 20-year-old.

Since signing from Chelsea in January 2020, Lamptey has been something of a revelation in Graham Potter’s side, first establishing himself in the first-team following project restart last season and he has now made 19 appearances, contributing one goal and four assists in that time.

The youngster has quickly become renowned for his incredible speed, which naturally makes him a potential replacement for Kyle Walker, who has consistently been one of the quickest players in the Premier League in his time with Spurs and City.

However, the England international will turn 31 this year and his pace won’t last forever, so perhaps the Citizens should be starting to look for a long-term replacement for the right-back.

So far this season, Walker has averaged a 6.81 rating for his performances in the Premier League, contributing one goal and one assist in 13 top-flight appearances.

Lamptey, meanwhile, has averaged a 6.73 rating, also contributing one goal and one assist but in two fewer appearances.

The City man has averaged 1.2 tackles and 0.8 interceptions in each game, whereas Lamptey has averaged 1.5 tackles and 1.7 interceptions, which suggests that the 20-year-old is arguably already outperforming Walker from a defensive perspective.

The Brighton man also averages more key passes and the same amount of dribbles per game when compared with Walker, despite playing in a team that is likely to be doing less attacking than Manchester City, which emphasises his attacking potential.

During his time with Chelsea, manager Frank Lampard dubbed the youngster as “fearless” and you feel that if it wasn’t for the emerging Reece James at Stamford Bridge, Lamptey would have been afforded more first-team opportunities.

However, with the Brighton man now valued at €20 million (£18 million) by the CIES football observatory, it looks as if Chelsea made a mistake in letting him go to Brighton.

Therefore, considering the similarity in style of play, and the fact that Lamptey is only 20 and already impressing in the top-flight, Manchester City sporting director Txiki Begiristain must try and sign the defender in the future.

Mark Noble lit up West Ham’s FA Cup win

Mark Noble lit up the stage as West Ham United beat Doncaster Rovers 4-0 to book their place in the FA Cup fifth round and secure a trip to either Liverpool or Manchester United.

Strikes from Pablo Fornals and Andriy Yarmolenko gifted David Moyes’ side a controlling lead in the first-half, before an unfortunate own goal from Andy Butler and a late hit from Oladapo Afolayan ensured the London Stadium natives would avoid an upset at home to their League One opposition.

The Hammers rarely looked likely to stumble in their Saturday afternoon showdown, as they extended their fine run of form to five-straight wins across all competitions. It is also the first time since winning six-in-a-row back in 2012 that the Premier League outfit have won five on the bounce.

Moyes recalled Noble to his midfield for the FA Cup tie as he sought to afford Declan Rice a rare break, with the England international having started all but two of West Ham’s previous fixtures this season and each since September’s Carabao Cup victory over Hull City.

Noble has rarely featured in any competition this term, with the £4m-rated veteran’s starting role only his sixth inclusion in an opening line-up over 12 appearances to date, in what is likely to be his final season in professional football.

Moyes’ decision never seemed questionable with Noble offering a calm head in possession to help dictate the flow of play, and often dropping between centre-halves Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop to allow full-backs Ben Johnson and Ryan Fredericks to push forward.

Noble’s vision frequently carved Doncaster apart, too, with the £50,000-per-week maestro providing an array of delicate and precise passes to either play his Irons teammates through or stretch the visiting Donny side.

It was additionally Noble’s right-wing corner that led to Butler inadvertently sending the ball over Ellery Balcombe’s line, while causing problems with his dangerous play in the closing stages as West Ham never let their foot off the throttle.

Noble ultimately ended the fourth round win over Doncaster Rovers having taken a colossal game-high 162 touches – 62 more than the next-best efforts of Johnson, per WhoScored.

He also played significantly more passes than any other player for either side, with a match-high 154 total attempts – Manuel Lanzini ranked second with 82. Of his passes, Noble completed 148 for a 96% success rate, including playing one of West Ham’s 14 key balls after feeding Lanzini to shoot on the stroke of half-time.

Noble has previously been criticised for taking “too many” touches by Irons icon Frank McAvennie, who suggested the 33-year-old had begun to hold Rice back with his time spent in possession.

That was never the case beside Tomas Soucek in the FA Cup, with Noble playing with his head up to carry play forward from the back and ensure West Ham remained on the front foot on a day they rarely had to get out of first gear.

Doncaster found Noble a tough object to avoid when in possession, though, as he attempted a joint-game-high three tackles and registered two interceptions, for the same total defensive output as Moyes witnessed Balbuena produce.

Noble’s efforts may not see that he earns a start when West Ham visit London rivals Crystal Palace on Tuesday, but his performance proved there’s more than just a little bit of life left in the old dog yet.

Mendy starts, Silva axed: Predicted Manchester City team vs Manchester United

Manchester City travel to Old Trafford for the semi-final of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, hoping to secure their place at Wembley for the final with a win against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Citizens have enjoyed a lot of success in this competition in recent years, having won the trophy in four of the last five seasons, and they will be hoping to make it four in a row by winning the final in April.

Pep Guardiola’s side were superb in their last game against Chelsea, despite missing several first-team players due to the current viral outbreak, but they will have to be at their best on Wednesday if they want to find a way past an in-form United side.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Guardiola to line his side up at Old Trafford, with two changes from the side that started against Chelsea…

Ederson is still self-isolating after testing positive for the virus so it seems likely that Zack Steffen will keep his place in goal.

There’s one change in City’s defence, as Guardiola rotates his left-backs and hands Benjamin Mendy an opportunity to impress ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko, who filled in well against Frank Lampard’s side last weekend.

Ruben Dias and John Stones start at centre-back once again, with the duo having helped City establish themselves as one of the best defensive sides in the league in recent weeks.

Whilst Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus could both play, provided they return a negative test before the game, Joao Cancelo is undroppable at the moment, and City looked dangerous without the Brazilian forward at Stamford Bridge.

There is one change in the City attack, however, as Riyad Mahrez replaces Bernardo Silva on the wing. The Portuguese international, who earns £150k per week with the Citizens, scored a memorable goal in City’s Carabao Cup win at Old Trafford in January 2020 but is still yet to score or assist this season.

City’s front four will be interchangeable, as it was against Chelsea, whilst Sergio Aguero could make an impact from the bench if required.

And, in other news, Silva upgrade: Guardiola must swoop for £54m-rated beast once dubbed “the best” in the PL…
