Celtic news: Commons believes there’s ‘absolutely no chance’ star leaves club this summer

There has been a lot of talk about Odsonne Edouard’s potential exit from Celtic in the ongoing summer transfer window. Of course, the young forward is an extremely hot property on the market and it doesn’t surprise that there is essentially a queue building for his signature.

All of this has led to countless speculation about his immediate future but Kris Commons has offered his insight into the whole matter, potentially calming down the nerves of many Hoops fans in the process.

Speaking in his Scottish Daily Mail column (via Daily Record), the former Celtic playmaker said the following: “For me, there’s absolutely no chance that Celtic will even contemplate selling their star striker at this late juncture. That ship has sailed. The season is already underway. If they were of a mind to cash-in on Edouard, they’d have done it six weeks ago to give themselves time to find a suitable replacement.”

He goes on to mention how the signing of Albian Ajeti changes nothing in that respect and that he doesn’t believe in the rumour that Edouard’s future at the club depends on the team’s efforts to reach the group stage of the Champions League.

Of course, the France U21 star has been linked with various Premier League heavy-hitters including Arsenal, Leicester and Everton. However, if Commons is to be believed, that ship has already sailed.

As for Ajeti, it’s unlikely that Neil Lennon wants to replace such a prolific young forward with someone who couldn’t establish himself at West Ham United.

Verdict

If this opinion ends up being true, Celtic will have received a huge boost for the ongoing season. Of course, Edouard could still leave in the near future but Celtic will have to cross that bridge when they get there.

For now, all that matters is that he stays in the Scottish Premier League for the time being.

Protestar e vaiar faz parte.

Everton: Fans destroy Marco Silva as he is linked with Valencia job

Loads of Everton fans have been destroying Marco Silva as ONDA DEPORTIVA (via The Toffee Blues) reported that he is a contender to manage at Valencia CF.

The Spanish club currently sit in 10th place in the La Liga table on 46 points having lost their last three games in the division, and only have five matches left to boost their hopes up of qualifying for European competition for the upcoming 2020/21 season, as per Sky Sports.

Silva would surely be looking to make an instant impact if he is hired, but several members of the Toffees faithful on Twitter did not seem to have faith in him given his relatively disastrous spell at Goodison Park.

The Portuguese boss was sacked by the Merseyside club midway through this campaign off the back of a rather humiliating 5-2 defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals Liverpool that left them sitting in the relegation zone (via BBC).

Silva actually lost more games in charge of the Blues then he won, having managed in 60 matches in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

These EFC supporters destroyed their former coach:

– concluiu.

Leeds United’s Team of the Decade

[long_read]

It’s been a rough decade for Leeds United.

The 2010s represent the first decade in the club’s 100-year history that Leeds haven’t spent a season in the top-flight, but despite the tough times, United have had some fantastic players through this period.

Join us on a trip down memory lane as we create our Leeds United Team of the Decade.

[snack_break title=”Goalkeeper – Kasper Schmeichel”]

Leeds United have struggled with their goalkeepers since 2010 as it seems as if they’ve had a new number one every other year.

The likes of Paddy Kenny, Kiko Casilla, Andy Lonergan and Bailey Peacock-Farrell have all had stints as United’s first-choice goalie, but you can’t deny that Kasper Schmeichel is the most talented keeper to play for Leeds over the past ten years.

His impact at Elland Road wasn’t incredible, but he’s undoubtedly the pick of the bunch over this past decade, and after going on to win the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016 he’s got to be considered one of the most successful players to pass through Elland Road.

[snack_break title=”Right-back – Sam Byram”]

Sam Byram may have left Leeds when he was only 23 years old, but he was incredible during his short time at Elland Road. He was consistently efficient in defence, winning 1.5 and 1.7 tackles per game during 2013/14 and 2014/15.

The defender had his career affected by a string of injuries, but the hype that surrounded Byram during his teenage years was huge and for good reason.

The current Norwich City man was brilliant for the Whites making 143 appearances by the age of 23.

[snack_break title=”Centre-back – Liam Cooper”]

Current club captain Liam Cooper has more than earnt his place in this team.

The Scotland international is currently halfway through his sixth season at Leeds, and he just seems to keep getting better and better.

The arrival of Marcelo Bielsa seemed to be the turning point for Cooper as he made the PFA’s Championship Team of the Year last term and has since been a key part of Leeds’ team this term, winning 4.3 aerial duels per game.

[snack_break title=”Centre-back – Pontus Jansson”]

Leeds fans may not love him after he joined Brentford in the summer, but Pontus Jansson was undoubtedly one of the club’s best defenders this decade.

The Swede made the Championship Team of the Season on two separate occasions, and he was the definition of a cult hero as his performances sparked one of the most memorable chants the terraces at Elland Road have heard over the past ten years.

[snack_break title=”Left-back – Charlie Taylor”]

Leeds haven’t been blessed with incredible left-backs in the 2010s, but it’s fair to say that Charlie Taylor has been the pick of the bunch.

The York-born defender made over 100 appearances for the Whites after graduating from the academy, and he’s now a Premier League stalwart for Burnley after appearing in all 38 of the Clarets’ matches last season.

[snack_break title=”Right-midfield – Pablo Hernandez”]

Robert Snodgrass may feel rather unlucky to not grab the right-midfield spot in this side, but it’s impossible to overlook the two-time Player of the Year winner.

Hernandez was Leeds’ best player in their most successful season of this decade, and for that reason, he makes this team.

We can’t say much about the Spaniard that hasn’t already been said, he’s an incredible technician and an absolute delight to watch whenever he steps onto the pitch. Last term he contributed to 24 goals.

[snack_break title=”Centre-midfield – Kalvin Phillips”]

We really can’t look past the Yorkshire Pirlo for this spot.

Phillips is the epitome of what Leeds United are all about having come through the academy as a boyhood fan, and he has all the talent in the world.

He’s been linked with moves to the Premier League and touted for a spot in the England team, but no matter where his career takes him he will always have a special place in the heart of every United supporter.

[snack_break title=”Centre-midfield – Lewis Cook”]

The other central midfield spot in this team could have gone to a number of players.

The likes of Mateusz Klich, who scored ten times last season, Jonny Howson and Bradley Johnson all have claims to be in this side, but it’s Cook who steps in alongside Phillips.

The midfielder is the only man in this team to earn an England cap in the past decade, and while he wasn’t at Leeds for that long he showed enough during his time at the club to earn a place in this side. In his final term, he made 1.1 key passes and also registered a solitary shot each outing on average.

[snack_break title=”Left-midfield – Max Gradel”]

Max Gradel may not be the best player to have played for Leeds over the past decade, but he’s got a good case to be considered the most entertaining.

The pacy winger was a joy to watch during his time at Elland Road, and his 2010/11 season in which he netted 18 league goals from the wing may be the best single campaign that any Leeds player had over the past decade.

[snack_break title=”Striker – Ross McCormack”]

On his day, Ross McCormack was the best player in the Championship while he was at Leeds United.

The Scotland international was the division’s top goalscorer during his last season at the Yorkshire club, and he’s the only player to have received a 10/10 rating from Phil Hay during his 15-year spell as the chief football writer for the Yorkshire Evening Post.

[snack_break title=”Striker – Chris Wood”]

Some of you may have expected to see Jermaine Beckford or Luciano Becchio in this spot, but when you weigh it all up it’s really hard to look past Chris Wood.

Another Championship Golden Boot winner, the New Zealand international was sensational for the Whites, netting 41 goals in 83 league games. It’s a mammoth task to keep Beckford or Becchio out of this spot, but Wood just about edges it.

[snack_break title=”Manager – Marcelo Bielsa”]

Could it have been anyone else?

The Argentine has been a revelation since joining Leeds last summer as he led them to their best league finish of the decade. He’s already a legend at the club, and the best may be yet to come.

[snack_break title=”The team”]

And there we have it.

It’s been a turbulent decade for the Whites, and to be honest, it’s one the fans may not look back on too fondly, but there have been some cracking players to play for the Elland Road outfit, and our team looks pretty mouth-watering to say the least.

Liverpool’s Mo Salah undermines Phil Thompson’s verdict against Man City

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

In the long-run, Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City on Sunday could have huge implications for this year’s Premier League title race.

The Reds beat the Citizens 3-1 at Anfield, which now means that Pep Guardiola’s side are nine points behind Jurgen Klopp and co, with both Leicester City and Chelsea now having leapfrogged them in the table. The former Barcelona manager was very vocal about his frustration with the refereeing performance at the weekend, but deep down he will know that his side were second-best.

Part of that was down to the contribution of Mohamed Salah. The Egypt international stood out on Merseyside, showing why he is one of world football’s star players.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

His goal put the European champions 2-0 ahead, and that was just a microcosm of his overall impressive display. He was a constant threat going forward, managing three shots, two of which were on target – only Sergio Aguero managed as many.

As a threatening dribbler, it is not much of a surprise to see him lead the way for Liverpool with three, whilst he contributed defensively with one tackle as well as one blocked shot. All in all, it was a stellar display from the former AS Roma winger.

Of course, it is something we have come to expect from the 27-year-old, but recently some questions have been asked of Salah after some stuttering form.

Former player Phil Thompson questioned his recent displays after the match against Genk in the Champions League last week, telling Sky Sports (via Metro): “It is a concern. The ankle injury that he had, it’s just that push off the mark. It doesn’t look as though he’s free-flowing.”

This display was an emphatic response to those doubts, and shows that such a top player should never be doubted. When it truly matters, they step up, and that is what the £135m-valued former Fiorentina man – as per Transfermarkt – did against City.

Now eight points ahead at the top after 12 games, it is surely Liverpool’s title to lose. If Salah continues to perform like this, they might as well be given the trophy now.

Tottenham fans are unhappy with links to Ajax glovesman Andre Onana

Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was reported that the north Londoners are eyeing up a £35m move for Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana, but it seems that they aren’t too happy with the link.

Onana – who has eight caps for the Cameroon national team – has made 159 appearances for the Dutch giants at the age of just 23, and starred for the side on their way to the Champions League semi-final last season.

The young glovesman kept a clean sheet in the first leg against Spurs, but it was his spilled save that saw Lucas Moura gobble up the ball and fire home to kickstart the three-goal comeback win in Amsterdam for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Interestingly, the report states that Spurs will need to sell Hugo Lloris before making a move for Onana, as the Frenchman will not want to be second choice in between the sticks.

Despite Onana’s impressive pedigree in goal at just 23 years of age, this transfer rumour doesn’t seem to be one that excites Spurs fans on Twitter.

Let’s take a look at some of the tweets…

Arsenal boss Unai Emery told what he must achieve by Alan Smith

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Alan Smith has told Unai Emery that he has to finish in the top four this season or risk the sack at Arsenal, per Sky Sports.

What’s he said?

The former Gunners striker believes that there is a gap to be exploited in the top four, with only Manchester City and Liverpool perhaps in a position to definitely finish in the top two positions.

But he has warned that if the former PSG boss fails to take advantage of that chance, he could again be looking for a new job.

He said: “I think it’s difficult for Arsenal fans watching on to see where things are heading. The optimism from when he took over has vanished really, which is disappointing.

“He’s got some new players in, he’s got some of the younger lads through, so it’s a bit of a different side to the one Wenger had. And of course, it is difficult changing things after 22 years but you’d have hoped to have seen some signs by now.

“You look at the table and Arsenal are still in a good position, and with the way Spurs and Manchester United are, it’s a great chance to finish in the top four.

“If they don’t this season, then there are a lot of questions to answer and you’d imagine he wouldn’t be around next season.”

Their best chance

At this point, this is surely Arsenal’s best hope of qualifying for the Champions League.

They finished fifth last season, one point behind Spurs, two behind Chelsea but 27 and 28 behind Liverpool and City respectively.

Chelsea, of course, have appointed Frank Lampard and are under a transfer ban while Spurs have struggled at the start of the season, losing as many games as they have won in the Premier League.

Manchester United are in the bottom half of the table, and one has to believe that the Gunners have a golden opportunity.

They have perhaps the most settled squad of the teams mentioned, they boast the joint-top goalscorer from last season in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and spent over £70m on Nicolas Pepe in the summer.

They have a blistering attack when everyone is fit and, while the defence remains as shaky as ever, their first XI may well be the rival of any other team in the league outside of the top two.

If Emery cannot take this team into the top four then his sacking would be just and deserved; on Monday’s evidence, when the Gunners lost to Sheffield United, time may well be running out.
