Wilson should hand Goldson a new deal

Rangers have been boosted by Steven Davis, Allan McGregor, James Tavernier and Leon Balogun signing new deals at Ibrox in recent weeks but Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson shouldn’t stop there, and should now prioritise handing Connor Goldson a new contract.

As per This is Futbol, journalist Scott McDermott has claimed on a recent episode of the Record Rangers podcast that he believes the Light Blues will be offering the former Brighton man new terms in the near future.

McDonald said: “I expect him to sign it, I think he’ll be the next one. I’d be really surprised. Probably with him, there’s a wee bit of debate just because of his age – you know, would he want to go back to England, he’s only got a year left.

“He might feel as if he’s still got a bit of unfinished business in the Premier League, for instance, we don’t know, but from the outside looking in, the other three that you mentioned, I’d be amazed if Goldson wasn’t next on the list.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/rangers-news-ibrox-steven-gerrard-ross-wilson-gers-rfc” title=”Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The 28-year-old centre-back has played every single minute of Rangers’ league campaign so far this season and has undoubtedly been one of Gerrard’s top performers, contributing four goals and two assists and averaging a superb 7.38 WhoScored rating. This is enough to rank Goldson as Rangers’ fourth-best performer so far this season, with only Tavernier, Ryan Kent and Borna Barisic currently ranked higher.

The Englishman’s current contract is set to expire at the end of next season, so it would not be a surprise to see some interest in the defender in the near future unless Rangers can tie him down to a longer deal.

Although he is already one of the top earners at Ibrox, reportedly receiving £25,000 per week, it is clear that Goldson is a leader in this Rangers side and is clearly rated highly by Gerrard.

Earlier in the season, the 40-year-old manager was full of praise for his centre-back, saying: “Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a true warrior. He’s had a lot of stick over the years, wrongly in my opinion. But he’s continued to improve and has been one of our most consistent players. I wasn’t too happy with the back line in Belgium on Thursday but if you look at the big picture, Goldson has been absolutely immense.”

Therefore, following the claim from McDermott, Wilson should act quickly to make Goldson the next player to commit to a new deal with the club, as otherwise we may see an English Premier League side register an interest in him in the near future, which might prove enough to turn his head.

Wolves’ predicted XI vs Aston Villa

It was only a few months ago that fears of relegation were starting to appear at Wolves. They had just lost to West Brom and even club captain Conor Coady was being substituted.

It was a strange time for the Midlands outfit but they have improved significantly. Since that defeat to the Baggies in January, they have only lost three of their last eight Premier League outings.

They didn’t taste defeat during February, a month which has been recognised by those at the top. Nuno Espirito Santo has been nominated for the Manager of the Month award while Ruben Neves is in the frame to win Player of the Month.

It has been an outstanding turnaround, even if they were battered and bruised in a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City last Tuesday.

Wolves now face another tough encounter in the form of Aston Villa, a Midlands derby. With their loss to City still fresh in the mind, we’re tipping Nuno to make three changes to his side on Saturday evening.

The first change to note is up front, where Willian Jose comes back into the team. He was among the substitutes at the Etihad Stadium, with Adama Traore preferred to lead the line.

That experiment didn’t work, however, with Coady scoring the Old Gold’s only goal of the game. As a result, he shifts back to his usual position on the wing, with Nelson Semedo reverting to wing-back.

Consequently, Ki-Jana Hoever is dropped from the starting XI after his inept display. He was given a torrid evening by Raheem Sterling and Joao Cancelo.

There are two other changes in defence, where Willy Boly makes his comeback from injury. The Frenchman was on the bench in midweek so should be fit enough to start now.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-news-on-wolves-from-molineux” title=” Check out the latest news on Wolves from Molineux!”]

He replaces Leander Dendoncker, who scored an own goal against City. The final change is at left wing-back, where Jonny is replaced by Rayan Ait-Nouri.

The Spaniard has struggled to complete 90 minutes since returning from his lengthy absence with a knee problem. After being tormented by Riyad Mahrez a few days ago, he is given a chance to catch his breath.

The £75,000-per-week earner is usually so important from a defensive point of view but still needs a longer period to get up to speed.

A partida começou animada.

Leeds look to sign Eduardo Camavinga

Leeds United are reportedly eyeing up a move for French wonder-kid Eduardo Camavinga ahead of the summer transfer window. According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites are said to be in the running to rival Liverpool and Real Madrid for his signature.

The 18-year-old is into his last 18 months of his current contract with Rennes and the pressure could be on the Ligue 1 outfit to cash in. Camavinga is currently valued at £54million by Transfermarkt, but this could be slashed if the club get too wary of losing him on a free.

Leeds being in the running for his services is a very bold move from Victor Orta and co, but would he fit in with the dynamic squad at Elland Road?

Should Leeds sign Eduardo Camavinga?

Having such a high market value as a teenager is impressive. Camavinga is following in the footsteps of fellow French talent Kylian Mbappe, who has been highly sought after since he was a very young man.

However, this may be a worry for clubs like Leeds, who aren’t particularly known for having money to burn. However, Andrea Radrizanni has proved he’s a man for the cause after splashing out decent amounts on several new players last summer.

Bielsa’s midfield is arguably where the issues lie – only Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas can say they contribute to the goalscoring action on a regular basis. The two have a combined eight goals and seven assists this season and rank behind only wingers Jack Harrison and Raphinha and star striker Patrick Bamford in terms of goal involvements, as per BBC Sport.

The Whites would certainly benefit from some more creativity in the engine room, but signing Camavinga would heap a lot of pressure onto Jamie Shackleton. The latter is already three years the Frenchman’s senior and he is struggling to make a name for himself at Leeds.

According to Transfermarkt, Shackleton has featured in just 12 Premier League games this season, starting only four. He has been pushed out of the squad on numerous occasions and signing a talent younger than him, one with more playing experience would only make things even harder for him at Elland Road.

Camavinga has missed just two league matches this season and that was due to injury. He is a first-team regular and even has Champions League experience. He was described as a “huge talent” by France national team manager Didier Deschamps, who has already given him his first senior cap.

It would be a hefty, but very wise, investment to splash out on his services, but Shackleton may need to look over his shoulder if the midfielder does make the switch to Yorkshire.

Why West Brom need Japhet Tanganga

West Brom have turned their attentions to Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

The Athletic’s Steve Madeley and Charlie Eccleshare claim the 21-year-old is a target for Sam Allardyce ahead of tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline.

It’s claimed that the Baggies want to make the most of their final domestic loan spot as they battle for survival in the Premier League, and after being dealt a blow in their pursuit of ‘top choice’ Ainsley Maitland-Niles, they are eyeing the Spurs youngster.

Though, they face competition from Italy and Scotland, of which SPFL giants Celtic are said to be keen.

Defensive boost

It’s no secret that Albion need defensive reinforcements and whilst the defensive midfield addition of Okay Yokuslu from Celta Vigo is one step in the right direction, it simply isn’t enough.

Indeed, the Midlands outfit have leaked a whopping 50 goals from their 21 league outings, 14 more goals than any other top-flight team at this stage. In the five home games under Allardyce alone, West Brom have shipped 19 goals.

The 66-year-old has an almighty task to turn things around as they sit nine points adrift of safety, so fixing that abysmal backline is a good decision ahead of the deadline this evening.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/west-brom-deadline-day-latest-news-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=”Deadline day is here: Read the latest West Brom news, transfer rumours and more!”]

At 6-foot, Tangana offers some much-needed versatility as he’s able to play centrally as well as on the right, the latter of which is probably where he would play as Spurs boss Jose Mourinho sees him as a future full-back.

“Tanganga for me, is a full-back. A multi-functional defensive player but firstly a full-back” said the Special One earlier this campaign, via football.london.

The Hotspur academy graduate is relatively inexperienced having only featured 18 times at a senior level, but he has shown glimpses of his potential as seen by his contribution towards clean sheets against Man City and Watford last term.

He’s even caught the eye of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who was hugely impressed by Tanganga in his debut against them. Spurs fell to a 1-0 defeat that day, but the 21-year-old excelled at right-back when coming up against the enigmatic Sadio Mane.

Indeed, Tanganga graded as Spurs’ best player with a 7.4 SofaScore rating. He made eight clearances, two tackles and won five duels. After the game Klopp waxed lyrical, he told reporters:

“I didn’t know about him and it was a surprise. Our matchday analyst told me about him. He played well. It was nice when the crowd cheered his name. It was his first Premier League game? Very impressive.”

Whilst Darren Bent lauded him as a “very exciting prospect” to Football Insider, so there is certainly a gem to be unearthed here.

Given he’s only on a reported £25k-per-week in north London, the £7.2m-rated titan could be a decent bargain for that final domestic loan spot. You’d imagine Spurs would love him to get regular game time at this level too.

West Brom chief Luke Dowling must secure this move before 11pm tonight.

Celtic’s loss of James Forrest is ‘massive blow’ – %%sitename%%

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish believes that losing James Forrest is a “massive” blow for Celtic and manager Neil Lennon.

Forrest out

The 29-year-old is unlikely to return to first-team duties until February, with the Irish tactician confirming that he has undergone surgery on his ankle injury at the start of last month (cited by Glasgow Times).

During the 2020/21 campaign, Forrest has scored twice and provided one assist from five starts and two outings from the bench, averaging a match rating of 7.14, having 2.4 shots per game and accumulating a pass success rate of 89.3% (Whoscored). Lennon is a huge fan of Forrest and described him as “priceless” last season (cited by The Times).

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish compared Celtic’s pain of losing Forrest to Tottenham’s anguish with their star man Gareth Bale.

“Massive loss, a massive loss,” he said.

“We’ve said before about Gareth Bale leaving Tottenham and Tottenham are like: ‘We’ve got £80million to spend, we’ll splurge on six, seven players,’ and you think six or seven can outdo what one player does and that didn’t happen with Spurs.

“It took a long time for a lot of those players to develop and some of them never worked. That’s kind of an example of what I’m saying about special players and, you know, James Forrest has been a special player for Celtic and, not only that, he was a special player for me and for Scotland.

“To lose a key player in your team can cause a disruption to the whole team. I’m not saying that’s the reason for Celtic’s difficult start but Forrest is a player who makes that team tick, even if he’s not in form, it’s just that he puts the fear of death into a defender.

“Even if he’s not at his best and a defender maybe marks him out the game, other players flourish and that’s the things that you don’t really see when you’re involved in the professional side of the game.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

While it could have played a role in Celtic’s demise in the league this season, there are bigger issues in the squad rather than just one player’s absence, most notably in defence.

That being said, Forrest’s statistics alone show that his attacking prowess has been greatly missed.

Time will tell whether Lennon plans to bring in any backup players once the transfer window opens. But whatever happens, the boss will need to bridge the gap to ease the pressure on his shoulders.

Leeds United: David Prutton pleads caution with Kalvin Phillips after England appearance

Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has claimed that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips faces a challenge to continue proving his doubters wrong.

Phillips initially broke into the Leeds first team back in 2015 and the talented midfielder has since gone on to become a key member of the Whites’ squad, helping them to promotion to the Premier League this summer and ending the club’s 16-year wait for top-flight football.

A consistent starter under Marcelo Bielsa, Phillips has made 185 appearances in a Whites shirt during his career and his performances at domestic level have seen him gain international recognition, featuring for England twice. He came in for widespread praise following his display in Thursday’s 3-0 win over Wales.

Phillips, who has played alongside Harry Winks in a two-man holding midfield unit thus far for England, normally plays on his own in that role for Leeds.

What did Prutton say about Phillips?

Prutton, who was writing in his column for Yorkshire Evening Post, has now offered his opinion on whether or not the Leeds man could regularly play a lone holding role in England’s midfield. The ex-Whites midfielder wrote:

‘It’s funny that people are looking at a game like that and saying he was good but we could have had more out of him. There were no goals conceded and three scored at the other end which is a pretty good game for England.‘The only way that you will find out if Phillips is good enough to play the holding midfield role for England on his own is by committing to it and taking the plunge.‘But as good as Kalvin is, I think it’s a huge step to say that as he has done it over the course of several seasons in the Championship and for less than double figures games in the Premier League we should say well England should obviously build a team around him. I think it’s a bit early for that.’ How has Kalvin Phillips performed so far this season?

Phillips has thus far started all four of Leeds’ Premier League games and the defensive midfielder has offered one assist so far this term.

Gaining an impressive average WhoScored rating of 7.15 out of 10 in those games, the midfielder’s standout performance came against Fulham in a 4-3 win, when the website rated his performance as 7.71/10.

After gaining England recognition of late, the future seems bright for the 24-year-old, but Prutton is right to plead caution about Phillips making the Three Lions’ holding midfield role his own, as he is still inexperienced at international level.

Do you think Phillips will become a regular England international? Let us know your views in the comments section below…
