The attacking midfielder won the coveted award last year after scoring 21 goals and bagging 14 assists in 44 games in all competitions. Despite playing 30 fewer matches, Messi, who joined Miami last summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, scored an impressive 11 goals and provided five assists for Miami. Ahead of the new MLS season, fellow Argentine Acosta quipped he was happy the 36-year-old joined so late on the campaign.

The 29-year-old told reporters: "Thank goodness Messi arrived in the middle of the season because otherwise I wouldn't have won the MVP.

"I am happy to compete against the greatest, very happy that it is here. You have to respect Inter Miami a lot with all the players it has. It is a team that is obviously going to be one of the favourites and a team that will surely go far."

While Acosta personally had a superb season, having World Cup winner and all-time great Messi in the MLS does absolute wonders for the division. It brings more eyeballs, allows teams to bring in more revenue through ticket sales, and may attract a better calibre of player to grow the league, too.

Manchester City player ratings vs Brighton: Erling Haaland malfunctions as sublime Seagulls push champions all the way

City were put to the test by Roberto De Zerbi's high-flying Seagulls and were fortunate to come away with a draw, despite almost snatching victory.

Manchester City's 12-game winning streak in the Premier League came to a halt against an inspired Brighton side who gave the champions their biggest scare of 2023 in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Pep Guardiola fielded a stronger team than in Sunday's 1-0 win over Chelsea but still experimented, including playing Rodri at centre-back – a move which just gave more control to Roberto De Zerbi's slick and ambitious Seagulls.

Phil Foden gave City the lead after two big misses by Erling Haaland, but a stunning effort from Julio Encisco pulled Brighton level. The hosts dominated the second half but City thought they had found a winner through Haaland's header, but that was eventually ruled out for a foul following a VAR review.

Brighton celebrated wildly at full-time as they clinched their place in the Europa League while City dropped points for the first time since their 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on February 18.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Stefan Ortega (7/10):

Kept busy by Brighton's onslaughts and had to make six saves. Also put under pressure when on the ball but coped with it well.

    Kyle Walker (5/10):

Struggled at times to cope with Kaoru Mitoma and not as able to put out fires as usual.

    John Stones (6/10):

Put under a lot of pressure and did not always cope well with it.

    Rodri (5/10):

Played in the unusual role of centre-back, which he has played for Spain. But his performance suggests he is much more useful in the middle of the pitch than at the back.

    Rico Lewis (7/10):

Showcased his technical skills and got forward a lot.

  • Midfield

    Kevin De Bruyne (5/10):

Never got going in the game and was taken off in the 57th minute.

    Bernardo Silva (5/10):

Struggled to anchor the team like Rodri usually does and had to resort to tactical fouls to stop Brighton in their tracks.

    Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

Contributed to some of City's best moments, especially in the first half.

    Attack

    Riyad Mahrez (7/10):

Played an exquisite through ball to release Haaland for the goal.

    Erling Haaland (6/10):

Missed two clear chances in the first half – a free header and a one-on-one. Made amends by setting up Foden for the goal and had a header ruled out in the second period for a foul.

    Phil Foden (8/10):

Built on his performance against Chelsea with another lively and effective performance. Was City's biggest threat until he was brought off in the 51st minute and fully deserved his goal.

  • Subs & Manager

    Cole Palmer (7/10):

Picked up where Foden left off and had a lot of joy down the left wing, crossing for Haaland to score the goal that was ruled out.

    Julian Alvarez (6/10):

An improvement on De Bruyne and Brighton had to foul him on a few occasions to stop him doing damage.

    Kalvin Phillips (N/A):

Only introduced for the final six minutes.

    Sergio Gomez (N/A):

    Came on with Phillips.

    Pep Guardiola (5/10):

Had the opportunity to experiment but playing Rodri at centre-back did not go well. He should avoid making the same mistake in either of the finals.

Johnson and Marsh to leave IPL early

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson and batsman Shaun Marsh have been granted permission by their IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab to return home after Monday’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. According to Kings XI coach Sanjay Bangar, the two players made the request so that they could travel with the Australian squad for the series in the West Indies in June.Johnson and Marsh will miss Kings XI’s last two games, against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, in Mohali on May 13 and 16.”While both the players have been of great significance to the team and contributed immensely, we respect our players’ decisions,” Kings XI said in a release. “We have a fine line up in place and are hopeful of a good performance in the upcoming matches.”Having finished runners-up the previous IPL season, Kings XI were the first team to be eliminated from the running for the playoffs this year, having won only two of their first 11 games. Though Bangar had not singled out anyone as responsible for his team’s failures, the poor performances from the overseas contingent of George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, David Miller, Marsh and Johnson hurt the team severely.Marsh played only four games this season, and 65 of his 81 runs came in one innings against Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad, a match Kings XI won via a one-over eliminator after the match was tied.Johnson’s failures were more pronounced. He took only nine wickets in nine matches and had an economy rate of 9.37 per over, a performance that was at odds with his billing as one of the best fast bowlers in the world.

Prudent Royals thrive on 'moneyball' strategy in IPL auction

Paddy Upton, head coach of Rajasthan Royals, has credited “thorough planning by the smartest moneyball operators” as the key factor for the franchise’s ability to save money during the IPL auction. Upton has also revealed that barring Gurinder Sandhu, Royals managed to have on board every player who was on their wishlist ahead of Monday’s auction. The inaugural IPL champions added six players, including two overseas pace bowlers, to their roster during the 2015 player auction.Despite expanding their squad size to 25, just two short of the limit of 27, Royals finished the auction with the most funds – they had not utilised Rs 10.65 crore [approx. $1.77 million] of the total purse of Rs 63 crore set for each team. The case was no different in 2014. While all other teams were struggling to meet budgets, Royals ended the full auction last year with spare funds in excess of Rs 5 crore (approx. $833,000). The joke in the IPL fraternity about Royals being the misers of the auction notwithstanding, Upton stressed that thorough planning by their back-room staff, led by mentor Rahul Dravid, was the key reason for their ability to get the best bargains.

Players purchased by Royals in 2015

  • Chris Morris – Rs 1.4 crore (approx $233,000)

  • Pardeep Sahu – Rs 10 lakh (approx $16,000)

  • Dinesh Salunkhe – Rs 10 lakh ($16,000)

  • Brainder Sran – Rs 10 lakh ($16,000)

  • Rusty Theron – Rs 30 lakh ($50,000)

  • Sagar Trivedi – Rs 10 lakh ($16,000)

“Rahul, Zubin Bharucha [director of cricket] and Panish Shetty [team analyst] in particular did excellent and thorough planning, so we knew exactly what players we wanted,” Upton told ESPNcricinfo. “And we got them. I think we still had over Rs 10 crore unspent, but we have a very strong and balanced line-up that we’re excited about.”Rahul, Zubin, Panish are possibly the smartest ‘moneyball’ operators I’ve seen in the cricket world. Not only smart, but they put in the preparation, research and planning that most are not prepared to do. Rahul left no stone unturned in preparing for international cricket, which led him to be Mr Reliable. This leopard hasn’t changed his spots. He remains equally dedicated, prepared and professional in his role with Royals. It’s a privilege to still be working with and learning from him.”Royals’ biggest signing was the South African pace-bowling allrounder Chris Morris, who had impressed for Chennai Super Kings during his debut IPL season, scalping 15 wickets in 2013. Morris was sidelined last season due to an injury but once he was available for IPL 2015, he became a prime target for Royals in the auction.”The plan was to get Chris Morris, an allrounder,” Upton said. “As a bowler, he gets good bounce and swing with the new ball, and is aggressive, so he will be a factor in the early overs. He has shown some good skill in the death, and has the ability to clear the ropes as a No 7 or 8 batsman. This means there is scope to play him and James Faulkner in our starting XI, and with allrounders [Shane] Watson and [Stuart] Binny, and a keeper-batsman in [Sanju] Samson, it leaves us with lots of options.”Upton, however, was slightly disappointed at having missed out on adding Sandhu to the squad. The Australia fast bowler was eventually purchased by Delhi Daredevils.”Sandhu was a keen choice. I worked with him at Sydney Thunder in the last Big Bash League and was impressed with his variations and skill, his thinking when strategising an over, and with his composure under pressure,” Upton said. “I think he is a star in the making, and this IPL is another opportunity to show this. It’s a pity that Delhi bettered the budget we allocated to him, but I’m happy that he’ll get to work with my good mate Gazza [Gary Kirsten].”While Kolkata Knight Riders stole the limelight for adding an unknown entity in KC Cariappa to their fleet of mystery spinners, Royals doubled the count of legspinners in their squad. In addition to Pravin Tambe and Rahul Tewatia, Royals signed Dinesh Salunkhe and Pardeep Sahu. Salunkhe was a part of the Royals set-up for the first two years, while Sahu is a former Haryana player who has now shifted to Mumbai. Tambe, a club veteran who was handpicked by Royals two years ago, will lead their spin pack.”Legspinners are becoming more and more of a valuable asset in this format,” Upton said. “Adding to Tambe and Tewatia, we got Sahu and Salunkhe who are different types of bowlers – one bowls flatter and tighter lines, the other more classic over-the-top turner of the ball. They will be able to benefit by learning from Tambe, who came from relative obscurity and went on to be very effective at the IPL level.”

Aravind hat-trick routs Tamil Nadu for 82

For the first two days, this was a pretty even game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. On day three and four, though, Karnataka showed the form that swept them to the Ranji title last season, to comprehensively defeat traditional rivals Tamil Nadu.On the final morning, Stuart Binny showed off his hitting skills, launching boundary after boundary down the ground as Karnataka piled on 104 in less than 15 overs. That left Tamil Nadu a target of 368 in two-and-a-half sessions, with batting out a draw the realistic option. In little over an hour, Tamil Nadu had lost their three best batsmen – Abhinav Mukund, Dinesh Karthik and B Aparajith. Left-arm quick S Aravind, who played this game only because Abhimanyu Mithun was unavailable, then hastened defeat with a hat-trick. Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 82, their lowest score in the Ranji Trophy since the 1972-73 final against an all-powerful Bombay side.If the run-out of Tamil Nadu captain R Prasanna was crucial in deciding who got the first-innings lead, the run-out of Karthik was pivotal in the second innings. Though the team was looking for a draw, Karthik went for a risky second after inside-edging the ball towards deep square leg. A precise throw from Shreyas Gopal meant Karthik was caught short when the wicketkeeper CM Gautam broke the stumps.Gopal had more cause for joy soon after. He presented Aparajith with a short ball, only for the batsman to swipe it straight to deep square leg. It is a shot Aparajith will rue, even more because there was only two minutes to lunch. Before that Aravind had produced a superb delivery to take Mukund’s edge which was pouched by Manish Pandey at first slip on the second attempt. In the second session, Binny set up Indrajith with a series of away-going deliveries, before getting one to duck in sharply and trap Indrajith on the crease. Tamil Nadu were 57 for 5, and their chances of surviving were quickly evaporating.Even they wouldn’t have expected it to end in such a hurry though, the entire innings lasting only 34.3 overs. In the 34th over, Aravind went wide of the crease bowling round the wicket and had Malolan Rangarajan holing out to mid-off. The next ball was angled in, and caught L Balaji lbw. The hat-trick delivery sneaked past M Mohammed’s outside edge and flattened the off-stump. In the next over, Vinay Kumar completed a resounding victory that gave Karnataka their eighth win in nine Ranji matches.Tamil Nadu coach WV Raman said after the match: “In a four-day game, it is not enough to be ahead in first two days, hope the boys have learnt that from this game.”
ScorecardRameez Khan’s unbeaten 78 and his eighth-wicket stand of 74 with Puneet Datey ensured Madhya Pradesh came away with a draw and a point from their match against Railways at the Karnail Singh Stadium. Seamers Anureet Singh and Krishnakant Upadhyay picked up seven wickets between them to go with their eight in the first innings, but they couldn’t quite force a win for Railways.Resuming their second innings on 212 for 5 – effectively 113 for 5 given their first-innings deficit – Madhya Pradesh batted out a further 52.2 overs to set Railways an unrealistic target of 212 in the 35 overs that remained. They lost three wickets in getting to 43 before the teams agreed on a draw at the start of the final hour.Upadhyay dismissed Zafar Ali in the tenth over of the morning, and had Ankit Sharma lbw for a duck in his next over to leave Madhya Pradesh seven down. At that point, they were only 121 ahead with 78 overs left in the day. From there, Rameez and Datey frustrated Railways for 40 overs, before Anureet had Datey caught and bowled for a 95-ball 28. Rameez remained obdurate at the other end, and by the time Railways dismissed the last two batsmen, there was too little time left for them to make any attempt at a run-chase.Rameez remained unconquered, having faced 236 balls and struck ten fours. Over the course of his two innings of 41 and 78*, he had spent a total of 364 balls and close to eight-and-a-half hours at the crease.

Bangladesh coach puts onus on batsmen

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha has pinned hopes on the batsmen for the two-match Test series against West Indies as their bowling stocks are “limited”

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha has pinned hopes on the batsmen for the two-match Test series against West Indies as he considers their bowling stocks “limited”. The first Test begins at Arnos Vale, Kingstown on Friday, where Hathurusingha expects Bangladesh to fight hard to enforce a draw.In the last series between the two sides in West Indies, back in 2009, Bangladesh had comprehensively beaten a weakened home side who were suffering a players’ strike. But the circumstances are quite different now. Bangladesh’s overall form has forced Hathurusingha into admitting quite early his target for the Test series.”Our realistic goal would be to draw the game,” Hathurusingha told ESPNcricinfo. “If we play well, bat well, we will be in the game. Our bowling stock is limited. We must look to bat deep and bat long, score runs and be in the game.”In only his third month, Hathurusingha has so far seen five ODI defeats, the country’s best cricketer being handed a 6-month ban and myriad other problems have come up on the field.”We are working hard on the morale,” he said. “It is not an aspect that can be changed overnight. It has to come from our action, not only from the coach and players but from everyone involved in cricket. We are working on that. I have seen them in only six ODIs so far. I have a bit of idea how we can go forward, what we need to do to improve in one-day cricket. But Test cricket is still ahead of us.”The focus was firmly on the batsmen, who have misfired throughout the year. Consistency has been missing, as was the case with Anamul Haque, considered one of the few in-form batsmen, who scored a hundred in the first ODI against West Indies but added 7 and 0 in the next two.It is worse for Bangladesh’s other leading batsmen too. Tamim Iqbal, Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah have not scored much, while Mominul Haque has suddenly found himself in a dip. Mushfiqur Rahim has contributed regularly but not from a winning position. However, Hathurusingha had seen how the batsmen were able to put together a 350-plus score in the practice match against St Kitts & Nevis, and so he remains hopeful that they would put a substantial score together. Mushfiqur and Nasir scored centuries, and although there was once again a middle-order wobble, there were periods when the two centurions were in control.”In the first game [in St George’s], we batted well on that wicket,” Hathurusingha said. “In the second game we didn’t bat well. In the last game they really played well. The target was too daunting, in the middle we had a partnership although we had a big asking rate.”I think we are getting there. We are trying hard to understand our roles and finding the right way to play those roles. It is still an early stage for me to understand their strengths and limitations. I am all open-minded but I can’t get into too many details without knowing what they can do in the middle,” he said. What is worrying for Hathurusingha and the rest of the Bangladesh think-tank is a bowling attack without any experience of note. Robiul Islam, Shafiul Islam, Al-Amin Hossain, Taijul Islam and Elias Sunny have a total of 21 Tests.Since 12 of Mahmudullah’s 31 Test wickets have come in the West Indies, he can be considered a bright spot but batting is his main job and he has not been doing well. Rubel Hossain’s 19 Tests make him the most experienced, but his bowling average is the worst among bowlers who have bowled at least 3,000 deliveries. Hence, Hathurusingha has kept selection of the playing XI open.”We haven’t decided our final XI,” he said. “There are places for grabs for players to put their hand up. Until we have seen the wicket we don’t know what combination we will have. You know that we are handicapped, we have one spinner left. Our strength is spin so we are going into this game without that option. So it is a bit hard and we might have to discuss a different combination.”Our bowling attack is going to be tested on these wickets. The spinner who is coming is quite inexperienced. It is going to be a challenge for our attack, beside considering the wicket,” he said. When asked what he wouldn’t like to see from the batsmen in the Test series, Hathurusingha simply said, “I want them to see make a lot of runs.”

Shakib threatens to quit international cricket

BCB president Nazmul Hasan has said that he has received a message from coach Chandika Hathurusingha that Shakib Al Hasan has threatened to quit playing Tests and ODIs for Bangladesh. Two days ago, the board had asked Shakib to return to the country immediately while he was on his way to Barbados to participate in the Caribbean Premier League.Shakib apparently made the threat after Hathurusingha had recently asked him to return to Bangladesh’s training camp on August 1, which would have ended his CPL campaign earlier than he would have wanted. The CPL runs from July 11 to August 16.”I have received a letter in this regard,” Nazmul told the Bengali daily . “I don’t understand how he [Shakib] can say such a thing. I want to speak to them in person. If this is indeed true, nobody will be spared. There will be no compromise on discipline.”This is not the first time that Bangladesh players have expressed dissatisfaction. In 2013, Bangladesh’s tour of Zimbabwe clashed with the IPL, which meant that Shakib and Tamim Iqbal would miss the lucrative T20 tournament.Shakib is likely to join the camp, which began on July 1, from Sunday but Nazmul said that the allrounder may not be allowed to play in the CPL for breaking discipline.”There is very little possibility to give the NOC [No-Objection Certificate]. He has broken the discipline. We are very strict in this regard. The board will take a decision on giving him the NOC in the July 7 meeting.”Apart from earlier disciplinary breaches during his international career, Shakib has had several run-ins with authority this year too. His infamous lewd gesture towards the camera during the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka ODI series earned him a three-match ban, and at the moment, a BCB disciplinary committee is investigating his alleged brawl with a spectator during a Bangladesh-India game last month.Shakib’s threat is the first time that a Bangladesh player has openly spoken about leaving international cricket.
