Duminy an understated match-winner

The burning question for Delhi Daredevils was their mettle under pressure. They were on a losing streak that was now at seven matches across two seasons. They still had to contend with their biggest influence – Kevin Pietersen – being restricted to the bench. They had to best one of the wilier attacks in the IPL, which believed – at 167 – it had enough to defend. However, fifties from stand-in captain Dinesh Karthik and new recruit JP Duminy took them home in an emphatic flurry.The Daredevils captain was on the receiving end of a snorter from Albie Morkel in the last match, but today he was at his busy best. He nudged those singles and twos, his footwork against spin was precise and more importantly he held the chase together until Duminy arrived at No. 5 and took Morne Morkel for 21 runs in the 18th over to shift the balance.Sunil Narine was Knight Riders’ go-to man again, gamely delivering a 19th over that allowed only six runs to leave the equation at run-a-ball. The pressure shifted to Piyush Chawla who beat Jimmy Neesham with a legbreak that didn’t turn, and then snapped him up with a seam-up delivery. Duminy hared across to the other end so that he was on strike, and belted another quick delivery over square leg to take the honours with three balls to spare.A big target requires some risks at the top and can sometimes contribute to wickets without much doing from the bowlers. M Vijay was one such casualty when his search for a non-existent single resulted in his run-out. Ross Taylor could not get going for a second game in a row, and was undone by an offcutter from Jacques Kallis. Daredevils, though, still managed a quick start, thanks to Mayank Agarwal’s 26 off 14, which ensured the Powerplay fetched 49 runs.Karthik and Duminy got together with 107 needed off 13 overs, and began milking the spinners. Narine was kept back until the 11th over, by which time Karthik had a measure of the situation. His strike rate spent only two balls under 100 as he trusted his nurdles on either side of the wicket to keep the score ticking. Chawla’s first over highlighted Karthik’s range against spin when he carted a six over square leg, and then cut a four through point. A languid four over extra cover brought up his fifty, and was probably the shot of the match.Duminy was at his innovative best. His first boundary was a scoop over the keeper. He would need to pull out his finishing skills. He lost Karthik in the 15th over, Manoj Tiwary could only last six balls, and Knight Riders scented a turnaround with 40 needed off the final four overs.It was then that Duminy exploded. Morne Morkel had set up Knight Riders’ victory on Wednesday with a brutal first spell. His pace and lift was just as troublesome to deal with today as he claimed two wickets, but at the crunch he almost seemed to play into Duminy’s hands. A length ball, a short one and a full toss were blitzed for four, six and six.Pace on ball might have let Knight Riders down at the crucial moment, but it worked for Daredevils when asked Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jaydev Unadkat to join Mohammed Shami. The pitch might have been slow, but under lights the ball began to seam.Mohammed Shami exploited it in the first over to hand Jacques Kallis his ninth duck, and mark him as the specialist batsman with the most ducks in the tournament. Gautam Gambhir, was still searching for his first runs this season, when he tucked one off the hip, straight to leg gully, to join Kallis at nine ducks.Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa rebuilt the innings with a 64-run partnership, telling themselves the release was around the corner. Uthappa survived a scare Taylor dropped him on seven. Even though Pandey fell in the 11th over, Uthappa, assisted by cameos from Shakib Al Hasan and Suryakumar Yadav, set up a total that visibly energised the Knight Riders’ dug-out at the innings-break. But Daredevils just wanted it more.

An ankle injury has ruled Lahiru Thirimanne out of the remainder of the three-Test series against Pakistan. Thirimanne, who twisted his right ankle, joined seam bowler Nuwan Kulasekara, who suffered an injured hamstring, on the flight back to Sri Lanka. Neither Thirimanne nor Kulasekara had played the first Test in Abu Dhabi.”The decision to send Thirimanne home was taken yesterday as his injured ankle is not responding to treatment,” said Sri Lanka team manager Michael de Zoysa.Kusal Perera will replace Thirimanne in the squad. The 23-year-old Perera has played 19 ODIs but is yet to make his Test debut. “We don’t have a back-up if another batsman gets injured so we requested for Kusal,” said de Zoysa.Sri Lanka, who have four other fast bowlers in their squad, have not called for a player to replace Kulasekara. The second Test starts in Dubai on Wednesday.

Rodrigo Caio tem formado a dupla de zaga com o jovem Léo Duarte, revelado pelo Flamengo. O camisa 3 está entre os atletas que mais atuou em 2019: são 16 jogos, todos como titular. A boa fase foi celebrada pelo zagueiro, que, no ano passado, sofreu uma lesão e teve poucas chances pelo São Paulo. Foi a temporada em que Rodrigo Caio menos entrou em campo: foram 23 partidas.

Agora na Gávea, o zagueiro de 25 anos diz ter recuperado a alegria de jogar futebol e de, em campo, ajudar os companheiros a alcançar os objetivos do clube. Atuando em bom nível, Rodrigo Caio mira as conquistas. O primeiro título já pode vir neste domingo, quando o Flamengo enfrenta o Vasco, no Maracanã, na decisão do Carioca. Na ida, o Rubro-Negro venceu por 2 a 0.

– Vim para ganhar, esse é o grande objetivo. Vim para um clube gigantesco, sabia da grande responsabilidade que eu tinha. Vim preparado para ser campeão e voltar a jogar no nível que sempre quis jogar. Fazia um tempo que não tinha oportunidade de fazer isso, primeiro pela lesão que tive em 2018 e por alguns fatores – afirmou Rodrigo Caio, no Ninho, antes de completar:

-2018 tinha tudo para ser um ano mágico e se tornou um ano muito difícil. Primeiramente pela minha lesão, semanas antes da Copa. Quando retornei, tive dificuldades, por problemas internos, em não ter oportunidades. Isso faz parte do passado. Procuro esquecer as desilusões e pensar nas alegrias de hoje. Estou em um momento diferente, estou me sentindo muito bem física e tecnicamente. O mais importante na carreira do jogador é a alegria. Recuperei a alegria de jogar futebol que, por vários fatores, foi se perdendo – finalizou.

Ajit Chandila, the suspended Rajasthan Royals cricketer, has been sent to a further three days in police custody by a Delhi court. He was arrested for his alleged involvement in the IPL spot-fixing case, along with his Royals team-mates Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan.”The matter is being investigated under the provision of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA),” the judge Ajay Kumar Jain said. “The prosecution is to be given full chance to unearth the entire crime. The accused is remanded in 3-days of police custody.”Chandila is required to corroborate evidence collected from the other accused cricketers after invoking MCOCA, which is a special law passed by the Maharashtra state government to tackle organised crime syndicates and terrorism and contains far stricter provisions relating to bail and admissibility of confessions compared to the Indian Penal Code. It allows police longer spells of custody of the accused.Chandila has been directed to be produced in court on June 20. The court also deferred the hearing on bail applications of Chandila and five others, including former Ranji player Baburao Yadav, to June 22 after being informed by the police that some statements of the bookies arrested in the same case have to be placed on record.Chandila was arrested on May 16 and remained in police custody till May 28 before he was remanded to judicial custody.While Sreesanth and Chavan were granted bail on June 10 and released the next day, Chandila had not applied for bail.The three Royals cricketers were arrested, along with 11 bookies, and were charged under the Indian Penal Code section 420 and 120B, which deal with fraud, cheating and criminal conspiracy.

‘Vai ficar a vida toda no Flamengo? Acredito que não. Tem um ciclo muito bonito no Fla. Uma coisa que eu bato com o atleta é que tem que encerrar esse ciclo por cima’, afirmou o agente de Cuéllar ao ‘Coluna do Flamengo’.

No meio desta temporada, chegaram ao Flamengo propostas pelo volante da Atalanta, da Itália, e do Al Hilal, da Arábia Saudita, mas o clube da Gávea não abriu negociação pelo camisa 8 colombiano, que, em junho, renovou seu contrato até junho de 2022.

Com as mudanças na presidência do clube e na cúpula de futebol, com a vitória da Chapa Roxa, de oposição, na eleição de sábado, dia 8, vencida pelo mandatário Rodolfo Landim, o futuro de Cuéllar é deixado em aberto pelo empresário, que pretende reunir-se com o grupo que comandará o futebol do Flamengo a partir de 2019 em breve.

-Eu estive com a gestão anterior para entender o cenário político, agora vou me reunir com a nova gestão, estou esperando a transição. Não marquei porque estou esperando eles tomarem posse, no dia 19. Vamos conversar a respeito dele, quem sabe com uma vinda já ou não do Felipe Melo. Não tem absolutamente nada até o momento. Empresário gosta de falar que tem sondagem, mas isso é baboseira. Não tem nada de concreto – finalizou.

Rodolfo Landim será empossado e assumirá de forma oficial a presidência do Flamengo no próximo dia 19. Enquanto isso, o grupo já trabalha nos bastidores por reforços. Nesta quinta-feira, por exemplo, membros da nova diretoria se reunirão com representantes do Felipe Melo, volante do Palmeiras.

Para Gianfranco, a possível chegada de Felipe Melo à Gávea, em 2019, resultaria em menos espaço para Cuéllar e, até mesmo, em sua saída do Fla.

– Se o Felipe Melo chegar para jogar na mesma função do Cuéllar, não parece que vai ser um jogador para ficar no banco de reservas. Um jogador do perfil e do quilate do Felipe Melo vem para jogar. Se os dois puderem jogar juntos é uma opção do treinador. Se não puder, a princípio, Cuéllar não joga. Diante de toda situação teríamos que trabalhar em uma provável saída do Cuéllar – disse.
