Saints fans react to Leach’s Broja tweet

Armando Broja is going to ‘break Southampton hearts’ when he returns Chelsea at the end of the season, Football London’s Tom Leach says.

He noted that Broja has a better goal conversion rate than Mohamed Salah, Son Heung-min and Romelu Lukaku this season, a stunning statistic given Salah’s record this term in particular.

The Albanian joined Southampton on a season-long loan back in August, and there was no indication that the deal included an option to buy.

Chelsea allowed him to temporarily depart following the arrival of Lukaku, accepting that playing regular football would be better for his development.

But he’s viewed as a ‘great prospect’ at Stamford Bridge and only just signed a new five-year contract in the summer.

How has Broja performed at St Mary’s?

Broja has bagged six goals for the Saints so far, including four in six Premier League starts and two in the EFL Cup (via WhoScored).

That makes him the top scorer in Ralph Hassenhuttl’s ranks, two clear of Mohamed Elyounoussi.

It remains to be seen whether Southampton look to test Chelsea’s resolve with a permanent offer for the £2.7million-rated forward.

Here’s how a selection of fans responded to Leach’s tweet.

Pankaj gets Rajasthan off to winning start

Group A

Scorecard
Pankaj Singh picked up 7 for 64 during Assam’s chase as Rajasthan put aside their off-the-field troubles to take full points in Guwahati. Madhur Khatri dealt Assam the first blow on the final day, sending back Dheeraj Jadhav for 16, with the hosts needing 294 to win. That opened the gates for Pankaj, who repeatedly dented Assam – an even better showing than his 4 for 44 in the first innings. The right-arm fast bowler was unstoppable as none of the batsmen managed to convert their starts, with Parvez Aziz top scoring with 45. Assam captain Amol Muzumdar had reason to celebrate though, becoming the highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy, courtesy his 25 in the second innings.
ScorecardAkshay Wakhare’s five-for might have come too late as Goa held on to first-innings points against Vidarbha in Nagpur. The offpsinner ran through the Goa top and middle orders before they declared on 203 for 8 in their second innings. First-innings centurion Saurabh Bandekar was the top scorer for Goa with 40 off 53 balls. The target of 340 was near impossible to achieve as Jayesh Dongaonkar and captain Alind Naidu saw Vidarbha through to the end of the day’s play at 83 for 1.
Scorecard
Debabrata Chowdhury’s half-century ensured crucial first-innings points for Tripura against Jharkhand in the drawn-game in Ranchi. Chowdhury added 44 to his overnight score of 34, taking Tripura’s first-innings total to 438 – a narrow lead of seven. Opener Siddhartha Sinha gave Jharkhand a solid start in their second innings with 76 and they finally took stumps at 167 for 3. Jharkhand would look to make-up for the lost points when they take on Vidarbha on November 10.

Group B

Scorecard
Girikina Prasad’s five-for ensured Andhra grabbed first-innings against Kerala. Continuing from their overnight score of 208 for 6, Preambhastn Prem and Padmanbhan Prasanth battled valiantly, as the seventh-wicket stand yielded 82. Prem surrendered to Prasad nine short of his fifty, and the offspinner then proceeded to take out the last two batsmen to end with a well-deserved 5 for 100. Sitting pretty on a lead of 106, the Andhra openers, Hemal Watekar and Prasad Reddy, saw out the remaining 11 overs in the day without trouble.
Scorecard
The runs continued to flow in Indore as the Haryana openers made merry after they had ensured first-innings points against Madhya Pradesh. Resuming on 364 for 7, still 182 behind Haryana’s mammoth first-innings total, Sanjay Pandey’s patient 46 only delayed the inevitable. He was the last wicket to fall, with the last three wickets contributing 70. Ahead by 112, Rahul Dewan and Ankit Rawat chose to extend Haryana’s domination, smashing 133 and 100 respectively. While Dewan scored 20 fours during his 171-ball innings, Rawat managed nine fours and three sixes during his knock. The unbeaten 244-run partnership was the perfect icing to the three points Haryana gained.

Hatfield drops update on Julian Alvarez

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is considering a move to bring Julian Alvarez to Villa Park in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Luke Hatfield, with the Express & Star journalist revealing in a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT that, amid Aston Villa’s links with a move for the River Plate centre-forward, Gerrard and the transfer team at Villa Park are indeed keeping a very close eye on the 21-year-old ahead of a potential January swoop.

Speaking about Villa’s interest in the Argentina international, Hatfield said: “He’s a young player, he started this season fantastically and he’s a player who’s a bit versatile as well – he can play up front, he can play on the wing – so he’s a player that I’m sure Villa will have an eye on.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how much potential Julian Alvarez quite clearly possesses, the news that Aston Villa are indeed considering a move for the striker this winter is sure to have left fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, over his 19 Liga Profesional appearances so far this season, the £18m-rated man has scored a remarkable 17 goals, registered seven assists and created eight big chances for his teammates, as well taking an average of 3.3 shots and making two key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player who Golazo Argentino dubbed a “phenomenon” average an extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.82, ranking him not only as Marcelo Gallardo’s best performer in the league but also as the best player in the Argentine top flight as a whole.

As such, the prospect of Alvarez linking up with the likes of Danny Ings, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey in Aston Villa’s front three is an incredibly exciting one indeed.

The potential signing of the 21-year-old – who is reported to be available for €25m (£21m) due to a release clause in his contract at River Plate – would also send a very clear message to the rest of the Premier League that Gerrard and Villa are serious contenders for European qualification come next May.

Spurs handed Dusan Vlahovic transfer boost

As per 90min, Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League suitors have been gifted a ‘huge advantage’ in the race to sign Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye move…

It is well-known that Spurs’ managing director Fabio Paratici has his eye on the 21-year-old ahead of January, coming after a move failed to materialise in the last transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tottenham had Vlahovic in their sights at one point over the summer amid their search for a Harry Kane alternative (The Telegraph) and it appears their interest has far from waned.

Antonio Conte’s arrival has only heightened reports of a possible move to Spurs given his pull in Serie A, with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) even claiming that a meeting was recently held.

The Latest: Spurs gifted ‘huge advantage’…

As per 90min, Tottenham and other interested Premier League clubs have just been handed a boost in the race for Vlahovic. Indeed, according to their information, La Viola president Rocco Commisso would ‘ideally rather sell to England’ given their bad blood with Juventus over the transfer of Federico Chiesa.

This could gift Tottenham, as well as the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle, a ‘huge advantage’ as they keep watch of the 21-year-old.

Furthermore, 90min claimed that Vlahovic’s agents were in England ‘this month’ for talks and to assure interested parties that the Serbian had not agreed a move to Turin.

The Verdict: Get it d0ne…

As the Premier League race heats up with many clubs interested, we believe that signing Vlahovic should come as a real priority got Spurs given their lack of a senior alternative striking option to Kane.

The Serbia international has been a revelation this season, following on from his hugely impressive 21-goal Serie A haul over 2020/21. Bagging 12 goals and three assists in all competitions so far already, Vlahovic’s form is only matched by his plaudits.

Valeri Bojinov, a former Bulgaria international and one-time Manchester City striker, called the youngster ‘crazy’ and lifted the lid on his self-comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Indeed, Vlahovic could have the panache and quality desperately needed for Conte’s new-look Tottenham team.

Everton: Phillips predicts Gbamin exit

Kevin Phillips says Everton may look to offload midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin in the January transfer window.

The former Sunderland striker was discussing the Ivorian’s future with Football Insider.

The lowdown

Everton paid £22.5million to sign Gbamin from Bundesliga outfit FSV Mainz in 2019, ranking him in their top 15 biggest transfers (via Transfermarkt).

But he’s endured a torrid time at Goodison Park, making just four appearances across more than two seasons.

He’s suffered three serious injuries, including an MCL injury just over a week after he’d returned from an Achilles tendon rupture.

Off the field, meanwhile, Gbamin was hit with a £25,000 fine and a 14-month driving ban after an incident in August (via Liverpool Echo).

The latest

Phillips, a regular on Sky Sports, says Everton may now have lost patience with Gbamin and thinks that they may look to ‘get him off the payroll’ as they did with £200,000-per-week star James Rodriguez, who left for Qatari side Al Rayyan last month.

“From a football point of view, he has had injuries, he has not been playing and then this,” Phillips said. “Come January they may look to move him on.

“Like Rodriguez, they might try to get him off the payroll and use the money to strengthen somewhere else.

“I imagine it’s been difficult for him since moving to Everton and this incident has just topped it off. It is not good to see.”

The verdict

Gbamin’s wages, it should be said, are a considerably smaller burden than those of Rodriguez. He’s said to earn £25,000 per week.

It is, however, increasingly difficult to see him making a success of his Everton career, and maybe it’s best to move on.

If he was to leave in January, then he’d surely have to go down as one of the least impactful big-money signings in Premier League history.

Pakistan sports minister urges ICC to reconsider decision

Pakistan sports minister Pir Aftab Shah Jillani has asked the ICC to review its decision to shift the 2011 World Cup matches from the country due to security reasons. He said the ICC’s decision was a big blow to Pakistan cricket and believed the decision was too premature considering there were still two years left for the tournament.Jillani said the government was even willing to use the military to provide security and protection for the World Cup matches in Pakistan. “That was an option available to us but I think the ICC has acted in haste and must reconsider its decision as this could have far ranging effects on Pakistan and its cricket set-up,” he told .The ICC executive board made its decision following a meeting on Friday, citing the “uncertain security situation” in Pakistan in the aftermath of the Lahore terror attacks on March 3, when six policemen and two civilians were killed as gunmen fired at the Sri Lankan team bus.The ICC had also said that Pakistan was unlikely to resume hosting any tournament at all until 2011. India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the other co-hosts for the World Cup, will now be hosting the 14 matches, including one semi-final, originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan.Jillani criticised the PCB for failing to convince the ICC and its member countries to stage the World Cup matches in Pakistan. “They [PCB] could have done more then they did,” he said. “I don’t think they did their homework well enough to contest this move to shift the World Cup matches from Pakistan.”Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam had also voiced his displeasure earlier and said the move to strip Pakistan of the rights to host the 2011 World Cup is “unjust” and a blow that, he said, would be hard to overcome.

Kevin Pietersen has said that he will not go on another long England tour without his wife, singer Jessica Taylor.”I’ve never said I want to miss a tour and there’s no way I will ever miss a tour,” he told the BBC. “I love touring, but there’s no way I’ll be without my wife for 11 weeks again.”Pietersen admitted that the winter has not gone well, either for him or the team. “The first half was a shambles under my leadership. We didn’t come close to winning a game in India and we didn’t come close to winning a game here before we won on Sunday, except for the mathematical error on the West Indies’ part in Guyana.”Referring to the much-quoted remarks he made at the weekend where he said he was at the end of his tether, he said that the comments “were born from frustration”. He continued: “We all want to go home, but it does not stop the commitment we all put in on a daily basis. I am absolutely 100% passionate about playing for England. I absolutely never take it for granted about wearing the three lions on my chest.”The second part of the frustration was I hadn’t seen my wife since January 21. It’s the longest period of time I’ve been away from her.”He confirmed that he had asked the England management for a 48-hour break to return home between the third and fourth Tests. “We decided it probably wouldn’t be a good idea for the team going forward,” he said. “There were no arguments, no nonsense, no disappointment on my behalf. I have been totally supportive of everything that has happened on this tour.”

Spurs ‘watching’ Pochettino situation

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’/club source John Wenham has made a managerial claim involving Mauricio Pochettino.

The Lowdown: Pressure on Nuno…

This Sunday could play centre stage to one of the most crucial games of Tottenham’s season already as the pressure grows on new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

After a brilliant start, even managing to pick up the Premier League Manager of the Month award for August, the 47-year-old is now at the centre of reported unrest behind the scenes.

Tottenham have lost their last three league games in humiliating fashion, conceding three goals to a trio of their London rivals in the space of a few weeks.

Now, Wenham made a managerial claim involving former fan favourite Pochettino.

The Latest: Pochettino claim dropped…

As per the Spurs insider/club source, who regularly breaks news on his social media channel Lilywhite Rose, Tottenham and by extension chairman Daniel Levy ‘are watching’ Pochettino’s situation at Paris-Saint Germain.

“Tottenham are watching the situation at PSG,” Wenham told Football Insider.

“The Messi-Pochettino thing has somewhat quietened down by the looks of things.

“If Pochettino became available, would Tottenham replace Nuno with him?

“I think they would. All you have to do is look at how hard Levy went for him in the summer.

“They were scared off by the financial muscle of PSG. I think that is the only way Tottenham would get rid of Nuno.”

The Verdict: Tall order…

Nuno arguably hasn’t had enough time to change Tottenham’s fortunes and it’s only logical he gets a fair crack at the whip.

If results continue to slump in devastating fashion as they have done, though, Pochettino would come as an amazing appointment if they can prise him away from the French capital – especially considering former keeper Heurelho Gomes called him a ‘football genius’.

However, Spurs tried and failed to bring him back to N17 earlier this year and it could be an even taller order now given the squad Pochettino has to play with at PSG.

As it stands, Levy bringing back the £115,000-per-week boss certainly seems unlikely from our point of view.

Australian Test player Pat Crawford dies

Pat Crawford, the fast bowler who played four Tests for Australia in 1956, has died at the age of 75 after several years of ill health

Cricinfo staff21-Jan-2009Pat Crawford, the fast bowler who played four Tests for Australia in 1956, has died at the age of 75 after several years of ill health. A tall and wiry right-armer, Crawford collected seven Test wickets at the excellent average of 15.28 before his career was cut short by injury. He made his first-class debut for New South Wales at 21 and in his first season topped the Sheffield Shield averages with 25 victims at 12.96. His form earned him a place on the Ashes tour in 1956 and he made his Test debut at Lord’s in the second Test. However, Crawford broke down during his fifth over and did not bowl again in the match. The Australia captain Ian Johnson later described Crawford’s injury in his 1957 book .”Pat Crawford, who looked like making a promising debut, broke down after five very good overs,” Johnson wrote. “Pat possibly over-exerted himself on his big occasion and it was rotten luck when he suddenly pulled up short, his face contorted in a moment of anguish as a leg muscle went, a moment that his skipper felt just as sharply.”He won back his spot for three more Tests on the tour of India later in the same year and bowled impressively in Madras and Bombay, where he was dangerous and economical. But after collecting a Test best 3 for 28 at Brabourne Stadium, Crawford again succumbed to injury during the third Test at Calcutta, where he managed only five overs for the game.It was to be his final Test and within a year his first-class career had ended due to injury, with 110 wickets at 21.02. Crawford went on to play in the Lancashire League.
