Jai P Yadav puts Railways on course for an outright win

Jai P Yadav has made a strong case for his inclusion in the India one-day eleven with his fine all-round showing in the Irani Trophy. After compiling 104 on the second and third days, the 26-year-old decided to make an impression with the ball on the fourth day. Bowling his medium-pace trundlers, he devastated the Rest of India batting, claiming six wickets and paving the way for their being dismissed for 292 in the second essay. This left Railways needing just 243 on the final day for sealing an outright win.The stunning Rest of India collapse came after a 123-run opening stand between Wasim Jaffer and Akash Chopra. Chopra was the first to fall after his second fifty of the match, a 59 off 116 balls. Rest of India skipper Yuvraj Singh, who followed, helped Jaffer add 47 for the second wicket before he too was forced to make his way back to the pavilion after scoring 26.Yadav, who claimed Yuvraj’s wicket, went to add another five more scalps, as the Rest were reduced to 235-7. At the same score, Jaffer, who had stood firm till then to make 116 off 321 balls, too departed, falling to medium-pacer Harvinder Singh. Irfan Pathan (29), Timil Patel (11) and Tinu Yohannan (16), then, cobbled together 57 runs for the last two wickets, as Rest got to within eight runs of 300.But with 90 overs of play remaining on the last day, it is the Railways who hold the whiphand in this contest. If they play to potential, they should run out winners and have the joy of adding the Irani Trophy to the Ranji Trophy they have already won.

Gold backs reports of big Alderweireld news at Spurs

Writing on Twitter, reliable Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has backed reports of big news coming out of north London involving Toby Alderweireld.

The Lowdown: Alderweireld asks to leave Spurs…

The Athletic first broke this news coming out of Tottenham with Alderweireld apparently informing the club that he is ready to end his six-year stay.

The Belgian, according to this report, is apparently hopeful of leaving Spurs and confident a move can be completed this summer.

Tottenham are also open to letting him go and won’t stand in the way if they receive a suitable offer for his services.

The Latest: Gold backs reports…

Now, reliable correspondent Gold has backed these reports and goes into further detail surrounding this Alderweireld development.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-3/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The journalist says that he actually requested an exit from north London ‘a little while ago’ and was going to push for it regardless of who succeeded Jose Mourinho.

“Changes coming to Spurs’ defence this summer,” Gold explained on social media.

“As per Eccleshare, Toby Alderweireld asked to leave. Understand it was a little while ago and he wanted to leave regardless of whoever the new head coach was going to be, but a move will be difficult.”

The Verdict: Big summer ahead…

Spurs will need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy ahead of a busy summer and their defence in particular needs a major rebuild.

Alderweireld’s age and slowly diminishing sell-on value may mean that Spurs should cash in on him as soon as possible with the futures of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier also a point of discussion.

It will certainly be interesting to see just how much Tottenham’s defence will change under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo as the club look to put the dark days of Jose Mourinho behind them.

West Brom in talks with Valerien Ismael

West Bromwich Albion are in talks with Valerien Ismael about becoming Sam Allardyce’s successor at The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that the Barnsley manager is now Guochuan Lai’s first choice to become the Baggies new boss, after both Chris Wilder and David Wagner had been set to take on the job, before being eventually being ruled out.

It is reported that Ismael will cost West Brom £2m in compensation if they do go on to appoint the 45-year-old this summer, with talks between the two Championship clubs regarding his potential move to The Hawthorns thought to already be underway.

Fans should be buzzing

While the Tykes boss may not have the promotion-winning experience that was believed to be a requirement of the now-departed West Brom sporting and technical director Luke Dowling, it is easy to see why the Frenchman is thought to be an attractive prospect for the Baggies this summer, as Ismael has performed something of a miracle in his short time at Barnsley this far.

Indeed, despite the fact the club was predicted to finish in 18th place in the Championship standings at the start of the season, after taking over last October, the 45-year-old led his side to 23 wins, five draws and 11 losses in the league, picking up 74 points and securing a fifth-place finish in the second tier of English football.

And, although the man dubbed an “ambitious” manager by the Barnsley CEO Dane Murphy was not successful in guiding the Tykes to the Premier League, losing 2-1 against Swansea City on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals, the fact that the French coach managed to secure a top-six finish with an extremely unfancied is nonetheless an incredible accomplishment, while it would also indicate that Ismael is a man with fantastic potential in the game.

As such, with Lai having struggled to find a suitable candidate for the role for what has been quite an extended period of time now, considering the 45-year-old’s record last season, it would seem highly advisable for the Chinese businessman should do all he can to get a deal over the line for the former VfL Wolfsburg head coach this summer, with his potential appointment sure to have fans buzzing.

Which Players Might Be On The Move This Summer?

Europe’s domestic competitions may have come to an end, but that doesn’t mean that football is taking a break. This is a year-round sport, after all! We do have the Euro Championship tournament to look forward to, but in addition, there’s also all the speculation about which players might be on the move. For the clubs that are receiving players, this will be good news. This speculation will be slightly less welcome for fans of the clubs that might lose one or two key players.

In this article, we’re going to run through a list of some players who might just be wearing the colours of a different club come the beginning of the forthcoming campaign.

Jack Grealish

Jack Grealish might be Birmingham-born and bred, but there’s no denying that his football talent will take him beyond Aston Villa, his boyhood club. Currently serving as Villa’s captain, Grealish had a season to remember and will look to build on his excellent form at the Euro Championship. Southgate has given him the number 7 shirt, suggesting that he’ll play a vital role in England’s quest for glory.

While lifting the trophy is one motivating factor, Grealish will know that this is his chance to show off what he can do on the biggest stage, which will only heat up the competition for his signature. The player’s need to ‘put himself in the shop window’ should improve England’s chance of winning the tournament, making them an attractive option for fans that make bets. Of course, England are current favourites, so check out this guide to better returns for Euro betting to ensure your bet is as valuable as possible.

Harry Kane

Oh, Harry Kane. For years, he’s been Mr. Tottenham Hotspurs. Their leader, their best player, their captain. And now? It seems that Kane has finally had enough of playing for a club that simply doesn’t win trophies. And can anyone blame him? Spurs have been in regression for a couple of years now, and it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon.

It’s understandable that Kane, the player who, along with Son, has carried the side for the past couple of years, has had enough. If he went to Manchester City, he’d be virtually guaranteed to pick up several medals, likely in his first season, too. Daniel Levy does have a habit of digging in his heels and getting his way, however, so it might not be a foregone conclusion that he’ll be on his way.

Erling Haaland

Haaland’s the man, and he’s only twenty years old. Oddly he seems to have come out of nowhere. His rapid ascent to the top has been a joy to watch, and of course, gained him the interest of all the big clubs in Europe. Will Dortmund allow him to go? They’re in a strong position to keep him for at least another year.

You imagine that Haaland could force through a move if he wanted to, but with time on his side, there’s really no reason to. However, Manchester City and Chelsea, to name just two clubs who are very much interested, might feel like now is the time to strike.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Messi might be on his way out of Barcelona, but in truth, we all know that he’ll still be playing at the Camp Nou next year. The greatest of all time will be a one-club player, no matter how much turmoil Barcelona end up in. One player who is also considered one of the greatest of all time who very much might be on the move, however, is Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Juventus star could be on his way to Paris or back to one of his former clubs, either Manchester United or Real Madrid. And for the first time in his career, it won’t be entirely down to Ronaldo, either. New manager Massimiliano Allegri isn’t as in love with the player as Ronaldo is with himself. Still, he’s an outstanding player, and Manchester United fans, in particular, would love to see him back at Old Trafford. You wouldn’t bet against him restoring the Red Devils to their former glory, would you?

Paul Pogba

If Ronaldo does return to Manchester United, he’s unlikely to link up with Paul Pogba, who could finally be on his way this summer. With his contract out next summer, the club is thought to want to cash in now rather than lose him on a free transfer next year.

Pogba already confessed that he wanted to walk away from the club in 2019. Perhaps this is the summer when the relationship finally comes to an end.

Stuart Carlisle in India

Zimbabwe’s Captain Cool, the unassuming Stuart Carlisle, comes across as being an open and candid individual who learns with every match that he plays and knows that cricket is the teacher in his life.Captaincy came upon him all of a sudden, as he was asked to lead the side when Brian Murphy was headed homewards. At a time when the question of captaincy was more like a joke – "So who is the captain this time around?" – Stuart Carlisle made a bold decision and took the reins of his team in his hands. Self-set goals had to be readjusted, and new avenues opened. But the journey had to continue, and the man has walked well.In a free-wheeling conversation he reveals his thoughts on the team, on the future, on captaincy and a lot more. So get that cup of coffee, sit back and let this captain take you through the thoughts in his mind.Trishna Bose: Stuart. thanks for your time. First tell me about the Indian experience. How has it been for you?Stuart Carlisle: It has been very good. There are lots of pros and cons but obviously when you lose a Test series 2-0 it is not so nice. I thought that in the Second Test the guys fought very well and I also thought that we should have won that Tes. There is no doubt in my mind that we should have won it. There were a couple of instances that went against us that I would rather not talk about. It is a bit sad that we tried so hard and the fact is that we could not finish it off, but it was a good Test.In the First Test we definitely lacked runs in the first innings, and in Test cricket you can always say that you were 30 to 40 runs short, or your tail should have added on, or the top order should have got a certain amount of run. There are lots of excuses, but at the end of the day this has been a good experience and a couple of young guys have done well.TB: This is your third series as captain. How has captaincy suited you?SC: I think that it was a big decision and I took a while to decide on [accepting] the captaincy . Eventually in Bangladesh when Brian Murphy got sent home I decided to take it on and I was not sure if I was going to be on; in fact I am still not sure if I am going to be on permanently. So I have decided to go tour by tour and do my best that I can. I have enjoyed the challenge and the team meetings and being part of the management team and in a sense preparing strategies. You learn a lot even by just talking to media and dealing with the press. You mature a lot over the years.TB: Captaining in the tests and in the one-dayers must be two totally different challenges?SC: Test cricket is slightly easier than one-dayers. It is slower and therefore you can readjust ever so often. But one-day cricket is a lot more tense and you have to make quick decisions and there is a lot more pressure. Trying to open the batting in Tests and captaining the side I find rather tough and immensely draining, but I have to get on and lead from the front because it can work for you and against you. All in all it is a big challenge. But I would not say that captaincy is easy at all. It is pretty difficult and there is a lot of stress because you have to deal with individual players. There are always different characters. You have guys that are behind you sometimes and others who have problems, and you have to deal with them. You are always involved and never seem to rest. There are pros and cons all the time – right?!TB: With ex-captains in the side and senior players too, one notices that you consulted Andy Flower and Heath Streak on more that one occasion.SC: I think you should communicate with the seniors all the time and especially with the bowlers. I don’t think you should be stubborn as a captain and I don’t think you should make all the decisions. You have to work with the team and that would help. In captaincy there are two or three theories – but you have to decide to go with one theory; that is why you are captain of the side. It is a learning curve for me at the moment and I have already learnt so much on the field settings and just from thoughts from the other guys.TB: One department that the Zimbabweans scored over the Indians was that of fielding. In the other department there is room for improvement; would you agree?SC: The fielding was much approved, definitely. We are getting the energy levels up and the urgency on the field too. The boys are encouraging each other on the field, and they are getting more and more confident. We fielded really well this series so I am happy with that.At Test level what we need to work on is our top six batsmen. They need to get one or two hundreds going and we have to get big scores. We have to be more ruthless and more positive. What happens sometimes is that we get negative and tire ourselves down a bit, so we have to learn to keep the ball rolling and keep the pace throughout the entire innings. The tail has been relatively good, so no complaints there. In the bowling, Travis Friend in particular did not bowl to his potential, as he has bowled a lot better before. Brighton Watambwa is a good prospect for the future; this was his first tour to India and I think he learnt very quickly how to bowl on these pitches. It is tough for a seamer to get the right length on these pitches. But Heath Streak I think did a fantastic job again; he has really carried this team for a long time now. It is good that Friend and Brighton have learnt to bowl on these pitches, and they should be able to take more responsibility and bowl a few more overs, and take the pressure of Heath a bit. Consistency then is the answer in both the bowling and the batting.TB: Colour suddenly seems to be a big issue in Zimbabwean cricket. The goal is to get more coloured cricketers involved. How do you view this?SC: The future, we are all aware, relies on the young black kids coming through. We have known that for a long time and we have had development programmes. In the last eight to ten years we have had at least ten international black players. But what the public don’t understand is that in Test cricket and one-day cricket – but Test cricket specifically – it takes a long time to get to the top. It has taken Andy Flower 14 years to get to number one in the world. It is probably unlike other sports where it takes three to four years to get to the top. This is a sport where you never stop learning or growing. I know that is true for most sports, but cricket in particular is very technical and experience is a massive thing in cricket. I won’t say anything further, as I am not supposed to say more. But there is not one senior guy in the side who has not tried to help any young player, whether white, Indian or black, and colour has never been a big issue in our teams in the past. But now I feel it is certainly being used as a weapon by certain individuals. But I rather not comment any more on this. Has this affected relations within the team at all? How united in the Zimbabwean team?SC: We all get along very well, but we go through transitional phases and our team is changing very rapidly, too quickly. One understands the need for change, but they have to be careful what they do, because they could scare away a lot of players and Zimbabwe cannot afford that. It is as simple as that. The camaraderie in the team in the past couple of years has been tremendous. All players get along regardless of colour, creed or whatever; this has never been a problem. With World Cup 2003 less than a year away, has Zimbabwe started rebuilding the team towards that goal?SC: The biggest thing for us before the World Cup is for our country to get sorted out, so that all our families back home are more relaxed, and we will not be required to talk about politics. The other thing is that I would like to see a lot more of the experienced players involved in the one-day set-up because the World Cup will be a very massive occasion and it is very demanding and pressurizing event. I think we lack a bit in experience at the moment but it would be fantastic to see some of the younger players come through. So I would like to see more experienced players in the World Cup squad and with Geoff Marsh our coach working on them. We need more all-rounders, for that is the way one-day cricket is going. It is vital that we have a combination of these factors and I am certain we can make it to the top six again in World Cup 2003. Finally Stuart, how much have you changed as a person with all the experiences that you have had over the past few months?SC: I am very fortunate, I have a degree in marketing and I went to university for four or five years, and I think that broadened my mind totally as marketing is what makes the world go around. So that has helped with my job, dealing with press and media. Just being able to talk naturally, for talking can be a nerve-racking experience for most individuals (smiles). All this talking and interviewing, etc., is making me become a better person who can talk more freely.Captaincy certainly matures you and before I became captain one of my goals was to better my batting averages, both in Tests and one-dayers and get them into the mid-thirties. I did not know that I would get captaincy so soon; I thought it would eventually happen, but it all happened so suddenly, and then I decided to do the best I can as a captain. I have reset my goals and now they are even higher. I just have to see that I do not crack under pressure and that I move in the right direction.Stuart Carlisle is moving all right, and for the moment he is heading in the right direction. With an uncertain future and fledgling dreams, being positive is the next best thing.

Mashonaland win by 2 wickets in Alexandra

The fourth and final day was by far the most dramatic with the hosts Mashonaland A winning by two wickets in a tight finish soon after lunch

Larry Moyo25-Mar-2002The fourth and final day was by far the most dramatic with the hosts Mashonaland A winning by two wickets in a tight finish soon after lunch. The day began with Mashonaland A claiming the remaining Manicaland wicket two overs into the first session. The visitors could only add one more run totheir overnight total of 205 before number 11 batsman Ian Coulson was out, bowled for a duck by Rennie who finished the innings with three wickets from 49 off 21 overs. This meant that Mashonaland A had the whole day to reach a victory target of 155. But it was not to be an easy target for them and it needed the experience of Board XI members Mark Vermeulen and wicketkeeper Alester Maregwede to claim maximum points eventually. Opener Vermeulen scored 43 off just 57 balls whileMaragwede, batting at number six, topscored with 45 off 80 balls. While the players had expected the final day to belong to spinners, it turned out to be the opposite as seamers Guy Whittall and Justin Lewis took thefirst seven of the Mashonaland A wickets to fall. Whittall ripped through the Mashonaland A top order as he claimed the wickets of opener Taylor (5), numberthree Andre Neethling (0) and number four Gavin Rennie (6) to leave them struggling at 51/3 after 12.5 overs.Lewis then took over and claimed the wickets of Elton Chigumbura (15), Vermeulen and number seven Norbert Manyande (0), while Whittall returned to remove captain Henry Olonga (11) as Mashonaland A looked set for adisappointing finish at 118/7 after 36.4 overs. With 37 more runs needed to with three wickets in hand Maregwede and 17 year-old Prosper Utseya added 22 runs with the former looking increasingly comfortable with the Manicaland attack. Just when Maragwede was looking at scoring a half-century he lost concentration and edged a Soma delivery to the wicketkeeper. Pressure returned to Mashonaland A as they still needed 15 more runs to win as number 10 David Mutendera went to the crease.Mutendera hit two fours while Utseya added singles to leave the scores level after 49.2 overs. Needing a single to win, Mutendera was deceived by a Somadelivery and only managed to sky the ball. As Mutendera completed a run, Ferreira went under the ball and with everyone expecting a routine catch, theball dropped between his gloves and the match went to Mashonaland A.It was Mashonaland A’s second win in three matches with Matabeleland and Mashonaland remaining while Manicaland are still looking for a win with just twomatches against Midlands and Matabeleland remaining.

Srinivas (107) leads strong Hyderabad reply

Undaunted by the imposing Madhya Pradesh total of 490, Hyderabad did well in replying with 300 for four wickets off 99 overs at stumps on the third day of the Ranji Trophy pre-quarterfinal at the Daly college grounds in Indore on Monday.Hyderabad resumed at 34 without loss and openers Daniel Manohar and wicketkeeper M Srinivas put on 116 runs off 31 overs before the former gave Narendra Hirwani a return catch. Manohar faced 111 balls and hit seven of them to the ropes. Srinivas then found another able partner in Anirudh Singh and the two increased the score by 89 runs during a second wicket association that lasted 32.3 overs. Srinivas, who had by then reached his century, was second out at 205 when he was bowled by Bundela. For his 107, the 26-year-old right hander batted 4-1/2 hours, faced 186 balls and hit 12 fours and a six.Anirudh Singh was third out at 223 when he was caught by Yadav off Chauhan for 42. He faced 108 balls and hit five fours and a six. But Vanka Pratap and Vinay Kumar (27) then carried on the good work by adding 50 runs off 19.1 overs for the fourth wicket. Vinay Kumar was bowled by Chauhan but by close, Vanka Pratap had diligently built his score to 47 off 107 balls with five hits to the ropes. Keeping him company is skipper A Nandakishore (7). The stage is set for a keen duel for the all important first innings lead on Tuesday.

Docherty discusses Gers exit

Greg Docherty has revealed he knows he made the right decision by leaving Glasgow Rangers to sign for Hull City.

The Lowdown: Docherty enjoys Hull success

Docherty made 19 appearances for the Gers, racking up six assists (Transfermarkt), but he never really received a chance to impress on a regular basis and instead spent the majority of his time out on loan across England and Scotland.´

Last summer, he completed a permanent move to Hull, and has managed six goals and four assists in all competitions as the Tigers have earned promotion to the Championship.

The Latest: Docherty shares delight

Speaking to the PA News Agency (via Football League World), Docherty shared his happiness at swapping Ibrox for the KCOM Stadium. He said:

“I spoke to Steven Gerrard when I was leaving Rangers and he said he thought Hull would be a good challenge for me as we could try to win the league.

“But it’s so easy to say ‘go win the league’ – it’s nowhere near as straight forward as that.

“To pip Peterborough we’ve had to go the last 14 games unbeaten, winning 11 of them.

“It’s a majorly gruelling league with 46 fixtures. At the start of the season, there was probably eight or nine teams thinking they could challenge.

“So there’s a lot of relief that we’ve got promotion. Once we clinched that, I thought to myself, ‘Naw, that’s not enough. I want a medal’.

“I’ve always wanted to win trophies. I’m 24 and I can now say I’ve ticked that off. A lot of people have brilliant careers but never win anything, so that’s why I’ll always remember this season and this moment.

“Since Christmas I feel like I’ve grown and really kicked on. I definitely made the right call coming down here.”

The Verdict: The right move

In terms of prestige, Hull cannot compare to Rangers. The latter regularly compete for trophies and will embark on a run in the Champions League next season, while Hull have never once competed in Europe and are only now getting out of the third tier of English football.

However, for Docherty, the move made perfect sense. Unfortunately, he clearly wasn’t a part of Steven Gerrard’s plans at Ibrox, but he has played in all but two games in the league for his new club. Hull have won League One comfortably, and now Docherty can attack the Championship as he continues to improve. At 24, and with 27 goals to his name throughout his career, he has plenty of room for development. There is no doubt he made the right decision.

In other news, Alan Hutton has suggested this man could replace Filip Helander at Rangers.
