Iqbal alleges conspiracy over exclusion

Faisal Iqbal, the Pakistan middle-order batsman, is worried over his future after being denied a central contract and believes he has wrongly been kept out of the team

Faisal Iqbal, the Pakistan middle-order batsman, has questioned his continued exclusion from the national side.He was recently denied a PCB contract and was overlooked for the tour of Sri Lanka, leaving his future in doubt. Iqbal has played only 26 Tests in a career that began in 2001 and last featured in a Pakistan side in 2010. He was among the touring party in 2012 to Sri Lanka and to Zimbabwe in 2013, but could not break into the XI.”I have a simple question: why is Faisal Iqbal being held from playing for Pakistan team,” he asked on . “Who is the power behind my exclusion and why are they not allowing me to play? Since my debut [in 2001] players who debuted around me went playing on and on and even had thousands of comeback in the side. And I was dropped after my third comeback without even playing me in the XI.”What am I going to do? I am scoring runs in domestic cricket, but gradually I have even been dropped from the central contracts as well so where should I go and put my case?” he said. “I am a senior player and have served the country and this should not be the way I should be treated.”Iqbal has a history of impressing on his return. In 2002, he scored 83 against Australia on his first innings back. Then came 139 against India – a highlight of his career – which guided Pakistan to a 341-run victory in Karachi in 2006. Pakistan’s tour to Sri lanka in 2009 was the stage for his third comeback, when he scored a fifty. Iqbal’s problem, though, has been consistency, which had often led to his exclusion.”I don’t want to criticise the system of Pakistan cricket. I have all due respect as I am here only because of the cricket I have played for Pakistan. I simply fail to understand why I am be being pushed back. Is there a conspiracy because of I am the nephew of Javed Miandad? Nobody is ready to understand and I am very frustrated at not being given answers.”Iqbal, 32, had a prolific career at junior level, since making the Under-15 side but his time with the seniors has, for the most part, been marred by allegations of nepotism. His career coincided with Mohammad Yousuf and Inzamam-ul-Haq being in their prime, and was never able to cement his place in the team. His domestic figures are impressive with 10970 runs at 40.33 in 193 matches to go along with 5136 at 41.74 in List A matches. However, he fell short of those standards last season with only 538 runs at 35.86; 32 other batsmen had done better.”I am always made a fool and asked to go back to scratch and play domestic cricket again and again. Am I only here to play domestic cricket? When will I be given due reward for my performance in domestic? If I was good enough to recalled in 2012, then why I was reduced to the bench and dropped without even giving me an opportunity. I am always taught to focus on ground performance but now I realise that I have been fooled all these years. I wanted to be heard to those who are the concerned (PCB and selectors).””I knew there was a conspiracy and that with time they will drop me from from every format and will later cut me from the central contract. Now what will I do, probably sell mangoes in garden and perform there to win place.”

Defending champions possess measured belief

Overview

Darren Sammy has developed into one of finest finishers in Twenty20•WICB Media

The defending champions are in pretty good shape. One could say they departed the Caribbean and arrived in Bangladesh with some of a swagger; not over-confidence, just a measured belief in what they can achieve as a T20 side.Although they are missing one player who would walk into the starting XI – Kieron Pollard – and another who would certainly be in the squad – Kemar Roach – West Indies retain the fundamentals of a powerful Twenty20 side. The batting is packed with boundary strikers, from Chris Gayle down to Darren Sammy, while Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree are a potent spin combination. Pace off the ball can also be provided by the cutters of Sammy, Dwayne Bravo and Krishmar Santokie, along with the darts of Gayle and Marlon Samuels. Sammy retains the captaincy of the T20 side, having been demoted in favour of Bravo in one-day cricket, and he is probably the most emotional captain on display. There remains a concern that too much emphasis is being placed on T20 cricket for West Indies, hampering any hopes of a meaningful revival in their Test and, to a lesser extent, one-day cricket. There certainly appears to be a correlation – the shorter the format, the more vibrant West Indies become. The decisions of some individuals always comes under the spotlight, but before this tournament Gayle was at pains to insist that nothing comes ahead of representing the region. Their success 18 months ago brought joy on and off the field; if they become the first team to successfully defend a World T20 title you know it will be done with just as much flair.

Key players

It is hard to look past the skills of Sunil Narine particularly given the role spinners are likely to play through the tournament. His economy rate continues to hover at below a run-a-ball. Away from the power of their top order, Darren Sammy has developed into one of finest finishers in this format of the game. No mathematically achievable total is safe if he’s there at the end.

Surprise package

It has been quite a few weeks for left-arm swing bowler Krishmar Santokie: signed up for the IPL, recalled to West Indies colours and a Man-of-the-Match award against England. At times England played him as though they were not sure what they were facing and that could well be his secret weapon at the World T20.

Weakness

Although West Indies’ fielding can be as good as anyone, it also retains a fallibility which can show itself in both the groundwork and the catching. Such moments can prove costly in tournament cricket. Also, there will be crossed fingers over the fitness of Gayle given his recent problems. West Indies have power hitters beside him, but his presence at the top gives an aura to the side that is not easily reproduced.

World T20 history

The were a unique way to celebrate the title last time out. It was by far their best World T20 outing although the prize was secured by winning just three matches outright but there was also a Super Over success.

Recent form

They played some impressive T20 cricket to secure the series against England 2-1 and it marked a timely lift in confidence after sharing a series 1-1 with Ireland and suffering defeats in New Zealand.

Alam ton helps National Bank sweep into final

A round-up of the President’s Cup One-Day Tournament matches on January 27, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jan-2014Fawad Alam’s fifth List A hundred and a strong performance from the bowlers helped National Bank of Pakistan beat Habib Bank Limited by 89 runs to qualify for the final of the President’s Cup One-Day tournament. National Bank will meet Khan Research Laboratories in the final on February 1.National Bank were struggling at 62 for 4 in the 16th over before an 88-run stand between Umar Waheed and Alam helped the side recover. The impetus for the innings, however, came from the lively sixth-wicket partnership between Hammad Azam and Alam as the pair added 96 runs in 7.1 overs to ensure that National Bank reached 272 for 8. Azam’s 45 came off just 19 balls with four fours and three sixes while Alam was out for 114 off 130 balls. The Habib Bank openers added 55 but quick wickets suddenly saw them floundering at 93 for 6 in the 20th over. Rameez Aziz tried to stage a fightback with an unbeaten 86-ball 58 but ran out of partners as Habib Bank eventually folded for 183.Fifties from opener Raheel Majeed and Rizwan Haider propelled State Bank of Pakistan to a four-wicket win over Pakistan International Airlines in the last round of group matches. Majeed put together two useful partnerships at the start of State Bank’s chase of 258, but a couple of quick wickets in the middle allowed the opposition a shot at a comeback. The 94-run, fifth-wicket partnership between Mohammad Afzal and Haider brought State Bank to the brink of victory, before the team closed the match in the 42nd over. Haider scored 78 off 50 balls with 11 fours and three sixes while Majeed compiled a near run-a-ball 84 with 12 fours.Earlier, a maiden List A hundred from opener Shehzar Mohammad and a fifty from Faisal Iqbal powered PIA to 257 for 5. Mohammad and Iqbal added 152 runs in little more than 25 overs. Iqbal scored 69 off 71 while Mohammad was unbeaten on 127 off 140 balls.Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited managed to hold onto an exciting seven-run win over Water and Power Development Authority in Faisalabad in the last round of the group matches. Batting first, SNGPL started rather abjectly, losing opener Taufeeq Umar for a golden duck. Ali Waqas and Azhar Ali proceeded to put on a 77-run stand for the second wicket which helped steady the innings. Contributions from captain Misbah-ul-Haq (27), Khurram Shehzad (23) and Mohammed Rizwan (27) ensured SNGPL reached a competitive 262 for 8. Waqas guided the innings with 103 off 121 balls. The WAPDA reply began promisingly enough, with the openers racking up 35. A double-wicket blow with the score on 80 may have lent some nerves to the dressing room. Mohammad Ayub, the captain, led the way with 56 off 79, and was well supported with efforts from Ayaz Tasawwar (32) and Mohammed Mohsin (42). However, the SNGPL bowlers came back strongly as WAPDA’s position at 219 for 5 quickly dissipated to 247 for 9, as they eventually lost by just seven runs. Imran Khalid was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 45.In a clash of two mid-table teams Port Qasim Authority eased to a 31-run victory over United Bank Limited at Southend Cricket Club stadium in Karachi. After being put in, PQA slammed 281 in 45 overs, thanks chiefly to captain Khalid Latif’s unbeaten 96 off 60 balls. Medium-pacer Mohammad Irshad struck late in the innings to end up with five wickets, but he went at 9.5 runs an overs. UBL’s chase started badly with the openers falling cheaply. Though No. 3 Hamza Paracha made an unbeaten 125 and UBL were only four wickets down till late in the chase, they could only end up with 250 for 6. The result meant PQA finished fourth, while HBL ended on seventh.Sharjeel Khan’s 55-ball 92 helped Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited beat last-placed Pakistan Television by four wickets, as they successfully chased down a target of 227 with 13 overs to spare. Sharjeel dominated the 88-run opening stand with Imran Nazir and pushed the ZTBL score to 147 for 1 before he was dismissed. Yasir Hameed then stepped up, scoring 46 off 41 balls before the middle order achieved the target in 32 overs. PTV’s innings was propped up largely on the partnerships between Naeem Anjum and Mohammad Adnan (80 runs for the second wicket) and 94 between Mohammad Sami and Usman Ashraf. The 94-run seventh-wicket partnership between Sami, who scored 73, and Ashraf hauled PTV past 200 after the side were struggling at 124 for 6 in the 27th over.

PCB and CSA to increase ties

The PCB and CSA have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding that will increase cricketing ties between the two countries. Pakistan will tour South Africa later this month, filling a void left by India’s truncated visit, and the boards have now signalled their intention to cooperate further after a meeting between Najam Sethi, the interim PCB chairman, and the CSA chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, in Abu Dhabi. The arrangement could see more Pakistani players taking part in South Africa’s domestic competitions. Sethi said that it was time for the PCB “to stand with CSA”, while Lorgat welcomed Pakistan’s decision to come to South Africa for three ODIs and two T20s in November, following the ongoing meeting between the two teams in the UAE.”[The] ideal thing would be for us is to play a series at home but unfortunately for various reasons that is not possible,” Sethi said. “It’s important for our players at the national and Under-19 levels to play internationally and I am very keen to support that, so when the opportunity came along, although it’s a tight time frame, it was time for us to stand with CSA. We don’t end up making too much money but we don’t lose anything and our boys get to play South Africa in South Africa, which is very exciting.”Pakistan have already toured South Africa once this year and their players could gain further experience of the conditions by turning out for the franchises. Sohail Tanvir has been a successful recruit for the Lions over the past two seasons and his international team-mates may now follow in his footsteps.Pakistan has not hosted a series since terrorist attacks on a Sri Lanka team bus in 2009, limiting the team’s game time, although they have been successful playing in the Emirates. Pakistan players have also been excluded from the IPL in that period, after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, but Sethi expressed a hope that this situation may be reversed.

Lorgat ‘distressed’ by ICC investigation

Haroon Lorgat has described the ongoing ICC investigation into his conduct as “very distressing”.
Lorgat has withdrawn from aspects of his role as CSA chief executive, including dealing with the BCCI and ICC, in relation to a statement made by David Becker, the ICC’s former head of legal. It is understood that there has been no progress on arranging an independent hearing.
“It is personally very distressing but I offered to be investigated because there was an allegation,” Lorgat said. “The less I said about that the better because the matter is sub judice.”

“Our players will also play in South African domestic cricket and that will give them more cricket,” he said. “I have talked to Lorgat, he has promised me to encourage our players to play in their local leagues. My concern is that our players should play in India in the IPL and in county cricket, we want to do that. If they let our players in the local leagues then it will give them good outing and good education.”The visit of Pakistan was hastily arranged after India cut their South Africa tour to two Tests and three ODIs. Such was CSA’s desire to arrange the fixtures, it is prepared to make a financial loss. Lorgat has been a supporter of cricket in Pakistan, travelling there as a consultant to the proposed Pakistan Super League after finishing his tenure as ICC chief executive last year. He denied, however, that a tightening of relations between the two countries would stoke the ire of the BCCI.”We are excited and happy with that great engagement with Pakistan and it’s pretty obvious that it fills a gap that has risen out of a curtailed tour,” Lorgat said. Asked whether the Indian board would be unhappy with the arrangement, he replied: “I don’t see why it should, Pakistan was available and it’s a bilateral arrangement between the two and we are simply delighted that we can get Pakistan to South Africa.”

A warm-up for different reasons

ESPNcricinfo previews the ODI between Scotland and Australia

The preview by Alex Winter02-Sep-2013Match factsSeptember 3, Edinburgh
Start time 1045 (0945 GMT)Matthew Wade faces an important time to secure his credentials as Australia’s No. 1 in ODIs•Getty Images

Big PictureScotland haven’t been able to develop a compelling case for more top level cricket, as Ireland have, and as such, their appearances against the big boys of world cricket don’t carry the same “point-to-prove” status. So there should be no ramifications for labelling this fixture an Australian warm-up for the NatWest series against England.Australia need to regain credibility in ODIs. They were roundly written off for the Champions Trophy, thumped by England in their opening match and never realistically threatened the semi-finals. A 3-0 Ashes defeat will have done nothing for their confidence but Ashes losers have recently found solace in the one-dayers that follow. A confidence-boosting defeat of the Scots will gee Australia up nicely. So will a longer memory. In February Australia shrugged off a West Indies side high on their World T20 success which, before last week’s win in the Twenty20 at the Ageas Bowl, was their previous taste of any victory. They can certainly play in their home conditions; a factor which will shorten their odds for the 2015 World Cup. And unless something quite remarkable happens, they should cast Scotland aside. That said, Pakistan were given a scare north of the border back in May and when Scotland can select their first XI, they are a useful side – currently lying joint third in the World Cricket League Championship with two games in hand on second-placed Netherlands. Their posse of county cricketers return for this match although captain Kyle Coetzer is ruled out with a wrist injury.Coezter could also miss the three World Cricket League Championship matches against Ireland which follow this fixture; crucial matches in Scotland’s quest to qualify for the 2015 World Cup. So you could say, Scotland are treating the Australians as practise opponents too.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Scotland WWLLL
Australia LLWWW
Players to watchWithout Coezter, a huge hole is left in the Scotland batting line-up but a player who can take up the slack is Matt Machan. At 22, Machan could be a Scottish international for some time and hinted at what he could become with 114 against Kenya in June. His recent form for Sussex is also healthy with two half-centuries in the final two Yorkshire Bank 40 matches – form which saw him called up to the four-day side last week.Matthew Wade was billed – predictably – as the new Adam Gilchrist when he first appeared and when he took the gloves in the Test side, looked set in as Australia’s No. 1 wicketkeeper. But Brad Haddin wasn’t seen off and he confirmed his status as Australia’s best gloveman in the Ashes. Haddin also has his sights set on the 2015 World Cup, so Wade needs performances to deter the selectors from going back to the tried and tested.Team newsCoetzer’s absence leaves Scotland searching for another opening batsman. Hamish Gardiner, Australian-born to a Scottish mother, is set to take Coezter’s place and make his international debut. Neil Carter is also unavailable due to work commitments. Preston Mommsen takes over the captaincy from Coezter.Scotland (possible) 1 Hamish Gardiner, 2 Freddie Coleman, 3 Richie Berrington, 4 Matt Machan, 5 Preston Mommsen (capt), 6 David Murphy (wkt), 7 Rob Taylor, 8 Majid Haq, 9 Gordon Goudie, 10 Iain Wardlaw, 11 Gordon DrummondAustralia’s squad is trimmed to 15 for the ODIs with David Warner, Mitchell Starc and Steven Smith leaving the tour. Warner’s absence means Shane Watson is likely to open the batting and creates an issue at No. 3. Shaun Marsh could play or perhaps Wade will be given another chance up the order. Michael Clarke could probably use an innings having not played for a week and it’s a good chance to have another look at Fawad Ahmed.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 George Bailey, 6 Adam Voges, 7 Matthew Wade (wkt), 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Fawad Ahmed, 11 Clint McKayPitch and conditionsThe ODI which survived the weather against Pakistan produced a low-scoring match with wickets tumbling early in both innings. That was the last major match to be played on this ground. No rain is forecast and conditions should be warm and sunny.Stats and trivia Scotland’s cricketers arguably created the finest piece of Scottish sporting history with victory of Australia in 1882.The only time Australia have visited Scotland for an ODI was in 2009 when they triumphed by 189 runs.In addition the sides met at both the 1999 and 2007 World Cups with both fixtures somewhat one-sided with six wicket and 203-run victories.Quotes”They are still a relatively new unit, with some pretty young players, and they don’t know each other 100%, so this is probably a good time to be taking them on.”
“We will do a little bit of homework on Scotland. We certainly won’t be coming in blind – that’s when trouble can occur.”

Bradley Scott bids farewell to Northern Districts

Northern Districts allrounder Bradley Scott has ended his association with the team, citing personal reasons

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Apr-2013Northern Districts bowling allrounder Bradley Scott has ended his association with the team, citing personal reasons and will be leaving for Dunedin, along with his family.Scott, who is a left-arm medium pacer and a lower-order batsman, moved to Northern Districts in 2008-09. He was a key player for Northern Districts in all forms of the game but, in the last two seasons, his participation was largely restricted to limited-over formats. Before joining Northern Districts, Scott represented Otago in the national competition. After his transfer in 2008, he played 17 first-class games and took 21 wickets for Northern Districts, and was a part of the team that won the Plunket Shield and two domestic one-day tournaments. His last first-class and List-A appearances were in 2011, but Scott played the recent T20 tournament for Northern Districts.Northern Districts’ coach Grant Bradburn said Scott would be missed by the team. “Bradley can be proud of the contribution he has made to the Knights both on and off the field,” he said. “His positive, bubbly character has been infectious in our team environment and will be missed.”

Ranatunga urges Sri Lanka players to boycott IPL

Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has asked Sri Lanka players to boycott the IPL if they are unable to play at all venues in the country

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Mar-2013Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has asked Sri Lankan cricketers to put their pride before money and boycott this season’s IPL unless they are allowed to play at all venues.”If you are not welcome in one part of the country then why play in other venues just because of the money,” Ranatunga asked. He was speaking to the in response to the IPL governing council’s decision to bar Sri Lankan players from playing in Chennai, because of growing political tensions in Tamil Nadu stemming from the treatment of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.Ranatunga, currently a Member of Parliament for Kalutara district in Sri Lanka, said he believed this decision was nothing more than politics and sport being intertwined, and that cricketers were easy prey because of the fan following and media scrutiny they deal with on a daily basis.”It won’t be easy for players to say no to their pay cheques but at times one has to stand up and say ‘no thank you’ rather than compromise for the sake of money,” he said. “Sri Lankan cricketers are not as well-paid as some of their counterparts and playing in the IPL is a huge attraction but by giving the tournament a skip they make a statement.”He said the decision would be a loss only for the IPL, as the tournament would be without some of the best players from Sri Lanka.

New South Wales wants governance reform at Cricket Australia

Questions over the level of pay to the CA chairman’s role brings were also raised

AAP14-Oct-2021Cricket Australia has been urged to commit to governance reform by its most powerful shareholder amid a backdrop of disgruntled and divergent state associations, half of which toppled Earl Eddings.Eddings resigned as CA chair on Wednesday, having lost the support of NSW, Queensland and Western Australia. The power shake-up, on the eve of the governing body’s annual general meeting and a tick under two months out from the men’s Ashes, means the sport is in a state of flux yet again.CA’s interim chairman Richard Freudenstein fronted Thursday’s virtual AGM, insisting his organisation had listened to its states’ concerns and will engage “more consistently and more deeply”.”I will commit that there will be more chair and ACC [Australian Cricket Council] meetings in the near future,” Freudenstein told Cricket NSW equivalent John Knox.Knox, who led the charge to oust Eddings and predecessor David Peever, called for improved consultation and communication, tweaks to CA’s nomination process for new directors and better succession planning. The former Credit Suisse Australia chief executive also requested a review of the role of chair and its responsibilities, noting Eddings’ income created an environment where “the chair needs to act like an executive to justify the compensation”.”It is highly unusual in any business or sporting environment that the chair of any organisation would be paid such a significant multiple of what other directors are,” Knox said.Freudenstein pushed back regarding that issue while speaking with reporters, claiming “there are very good reasons why the chair’s pay is what it is”.”The role of chair is different to the role in many other sports bodies and that’s because of the international aspect that comes with it,” he said. “There are significant responsibilities with the ICC, as well as all the bilateral relationships. As well as managing a complicated federated system in Australia, and you’ve seen the level of complication that can cause.”CA reported a $151,000 loss for 2020-21; a significantly better outcome than what was forecast during last year’s cost-cutting mission that so deeply frustrated NSW and Queensland. The AGM was not nearly as tense as it might have been if Eddings was present, with Freudenstein, CA chief executive Nick Hockley and even Knox thanking the deposed Victorian for his service. But as CA starts searching for its third chair in a tick over three years, the state of its strained relationship with shareholders was clear.”It is crucial the shareholders and board of Cricket Australia work closely together over the next few months to learn from the past and put in place the necessary changes,” Knox said.Cricket Victoria chair David Maddocks lamented the rolling of Eddings, saying many people had expressed “sadness and disappointment” about it and the nature in which it occurred.
