Onana guilty of two poor errorsMakes a mess of another free-kickUnited blow two-goal leadWHAT HAPPENED?

Onana put in an error-stewn performance for Manchester United in a must-win clash against Galatasaray in the Champions League. The goalkeeper made a mess of free-kick from Hakim Ziyech in the first half and made another mistake after the break to allow the hosts to make it 3-2. Again the mistake came from a Ziyech free-kick, which Onana got a hand to but succeeded only in scooping the ball into the back of the net.

Onana's errors proved costly as Galastasaray went on to equalise less than 10 minutes later. Substitute Kerem Akturkoglu came off the bench to blast a brilliant effort past the United stopper and make it 3-3. The goal was a bitter blow for United who had led 2-0 and then 3-1 in a game they really needed to win.

German giants eager to sign a strikerSpurs talisman in their sightsInto final year of contract in north LondonWHAT HAPPENED?

The Bundesliga champions have made the England captain their top target for the summer window as they seek to bring another proven No.9 on board. They have been met by stubborn resistance from those in north London, with no agreement put in place.

Spurs are understandably reluctant to part with their all-time leading goalscorer despite seeing him enter the final year of his contract. An initial approach from Bayern that was said to be worth €70 million (£60m/$77m) plus add-ons was knocked back. A second offer from the Allianz Arena was also shunned, with the two clubs reportedly some £25m ($32m) apart in their respective valuations.

AND WHAT'S MORE

reports that a renewed bid from Bayern has been given the same treatment, with Tottenham’s asking price still not being met. As a result, Kane remains part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans, with four goals recorded in his most recent friendly outing against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Spurs are still hoping to see Kane sign a new deal, with Dejan Kulusevski revealing that the talismanic striker’s team-mates are doing all they can to talk him around. The Swedish winger has said, with the start of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign fast approaching: “He's unbelievable. Honestly, his mentality, I can learn from him like everybody. He just goes out and performs day in day out. He's a true professional. Of course we want him to stay and we'll do everything to make him stay.”

Real Madrid, Serie A and the 10 biggest disappointments of the Champions League this season

The holders weren't the only ones to underwhelm in what has been a continental campaign full of surprises

This season's edition of the Champions League may have been one of the best in recent memory, but it has certainly come with its fair share of disappointments.

Managerial casualties, players wanting out and the absence of many big names in the latter stages have all come as a result of this campaign's unpredictability, with the fall-out only continuing as the end of the season and the transfer window approach.

Including leagues, teams and much more, here are the 10 biggest disappointments of the 2018-19 Champions League season.

    Massimiliano Allegri

When Juventus, Champions League finalists twice in four years, completed the summer signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, it looked like they had found the missing piece of their European glory puzzle.

But Massimiliano Allegri’s defensive approach to European football ensured otherwise, with him unable to get the best out of a plethora of attacking options – including Mr Champions League himself, whose six-goal return was his worst since 2010-11.

Juventus were eliminated by Ajax in the quarter-finals – resulting in Allegri eventually losing his job – with the Bianconeri needing a more expansive coach if they are to end their 23-year wait for another European triumph.

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s bid for a fourth successive Champions League triumph ended in the most embarrassing fashion.

They just about kept their dignity coming out of the groups, where they lost twice to CSKA Moscow, before Sergio Ramos’ arrogance set up a last 16 exit.

His deliberate booking and suspension was felt significantly as, after VAR had rescued Los Blancos in Amsterdam, a Dusan Tadic-inspired Ajax ripped the champions to shreds in Spain.

The consequences? Madrid’s biggest ever home defeat (1-4) in the knockouts of European competition, their second managerial sacking of the season and the return of Zinedine Zidane; some impact.

    Serie A

After Roma’s incredible semi-final run last season, just two Italian teams escaped the group stages this term – and both were eliminated in disappointing fashion.

Juventus’ quarter-final defeat to underdogs Ajax resulted in Allegri’s departure, while Roma were unable to navigate a very kind last 16 tie against Porto.

Still, both performed better than Inter and Napoli – the former failing to beat winless PSV to progress and the latter letting a firm control of Group C slip.

This season once again demonstrated the huge gulf in quality between Juve (who romped to their eighth successive Scudetto) and the rest of Serie A, as well as the league’s general low quality.

    Defensive football

The shortcomings of conservative football were exposed this season, as protecting a lead in this season’s Champions League just didn’t work.

Ajax's comeback against Real Madrid, Juventus' against Atletico Madrid, Manchester United's against PSG, Tottenham's against Ajax and, of course, Liverpool's against Barcelona, made this the campaign for attacking football and nothing else.

With an average of over three goals per knockout game, the failures of more defensive coaches, such as Massimiliano Allegri and Diego Simeone, were damning.

The value of the away goal only encouraged attacking coaches more and helped produce one of the greatest Champions League seasons yet.

O presidente José Carlos Peres tomou a palavra, elogiou Jesualdo Ferreira pelos antigos trabalhos e entregou a camisa 10 do Santos a ele.

Preparados e o Paulista será importante – comentou Peres.

Mire's rise gladdens friends Down Under

Zimbabwe batsman Solomon Mire’s rise has delighted his former mates in College Cricket Club in Hamilton, Victoria

Firdose Moonda18-Feb-2015

Solomon Mire’s ability as a big hitter has not gone unnoticed•AFP

There were cheers in Hamilton, New Zealand when little-known Solomon Mire smacked Morne Morkel over cow corner to ensure Zimbabwe went down in style last Sunday. There were also cheers in Hamilton, Australia.”That shot… it was just so good. That’s what Solomon can do,” Hamish Bailey, the coach of of College Cricket Club in Hamilton, Victoria, three-and-half-hours from Melbourne, told ESPNcricinfo. Bailey would know.Five years ago, a young Mire, whose only claim to fame was being at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup (his numbers there were underwhelming as he scored just 95 runs from five matches and took a single wicket), moved to Hamilton to start a new life. He came on the recommendation of Daniel Landman, another Zimbabwean age-group player, who was going to be the clubs’s overseas professional but chose UK instead, and with almost nothing but the ability to hit the ball hard.”He was really hard-working, fit and strong and better than any of us,” Bailey said. And it was not long before others saw that. Mire soon found opportunity in Melbourne, where he played premier cricket for Carlton, albeit not at the level where he could make a living. He was part of the club’s second XI, a non-paying position, and needed a step in the right direction, financially. That was where Crusaders, a wandering cricket team of which former Gray-Nicolls bat retailer Swan Richards is a co-founder. Richards, who among other things aids in the development of promising Australian cricketers, stepped in. “We helped him for between six and nine months because he needed some guidance,” he said. That assistance included equipment and help with the immigration office as Mire looked to make his life in Australia. When the Melbourne Renegades signed him as a rookie for the 2013-14 season, that could have sealed his future Down Under, but it also came with being re-noticed by a Zimbabwean administration looking to change the fortunes of their ailing team.He was picked for their tour of Bangladesh and stood out as one of the few performers on a tour of failure. Zimbabwe lost all three Tests and five ODIs, but Mire scored two half-centuries in the limited-overs leg. He was Zimbabwe’s joint second-highest run-scorer along with Hamilton Masakadza, and showed the ability to hit the ball further than Zimbabwe’s biggest hitter Elton Chigumbura. That allowed the captain to move up the order, away from the finisher’s role which Mire has now adopted.”He’s just great to watch,” Brendan Taylor said of Mire. Richards agrees. “He is an exceptional hitter of the ball, so much so that sometimes he needs to tame it. It’s difficult because how do you do that with so much natural ability?”Richards hopes that if Mire can find the balance between bludgeoning and building an innings, he can catch the attention of a T20 franchise, if only because that will allow him to turn cricket into a career. “There are truckloads of opportunities for cricketers these days. We just want Solomon to succeed,” Richards said. “And you don’t have to be a superstar to earn a few hundred thousand dollars. For most guys that is a lot of money, although for the really big guys it’s small change.”Mire may also look to another stint in the Big Bash, which will be made easier if the status of his bridging visa for Australia is changed to allow him permanent residency, and there are thoughts of him going to England to play club cricket there. But the immediate focus is the World Cup and Richards wants Mire to do well for both himself and Zimbabwe. “When it gets hard, he has to be the one to get a big score. He has got a window of opportunity here and he needs to take it.”By the time Mire got to the crease against South Africa, there were only nine overs left in the innings and Zimbabwe needed 104 more runs. Mire had seen it was possible – he bowed the over that David Miller smacked for 30 – but the South African attack were not going to let him get away with what he had gifted Miller. He tried anyway and showed his potential to become a hero for Zimbabwe when they need him to. But even if he doesn’t manage that, he is already a hero in some circles.Mire’s old team-mates at College Cricket Club, to whom he returns every Christmas, will be tracking him through parts of the tournament. Next week, a car-load of Mire’s friends will make the 10-hour trip across more than 900 kilometres from Hamilton to Canberra to watch him play against West Indies.”Zimbabwe has become all of our second team and we’re hoping they will get a game in Adelaide because that would be closer for us to go to,” Bailey said. The South Australian capital is only 500 kilometres away, which will still require a road trip, but if Zimbabwe get to play there, it means they would have qualified for a quarter-final and their opposition will be Australia. In Hamilton, Australia, they may not be cheering for the home team.

CSA extends Domingo contract

Russell Domingo, South Africa’s head coach, has been given an extension till April 2016. CSA reached a unanimous decision on extending Domingo’s original two-year contract, which would have ended in April 2015.The decision to keep Domingo on was taken at Cricket South Africa’s AGM in Johannesburg on Saturday. Following the meeting, a CSA statement said the board had a net profit of R199 million (US$ 18m) in the last financial year, and termed that to be a good return given the shortening of India’s tour in December-January. “We are extremely satisfied with the results especially in the light of the unfortunate curtailment of the Indian tour,” CSA president Chris Nenzani said.Russell Domingo will continue as South Africa coach until April 2016•AFP

Team manager Mohammed Moosajee’s contract was also extended at the meeting.Domingo’s tenure had got off to a rough start when they were drubbed 4-1 in Sri Lanka in July. He had said then Sri Lanka was a “hell of a tough place to tour”, but in 2014, they secured their maiden ODI series in the country and capped it with a determined stonewalling effort in Colombo to reclaim the No.1 ranking in Tests. As they had done in Johannesburg against India where they had almost sneaked through to an unlikely victory, South Africa absorbed everything the Rangana Herath-led attack had to offer to save their 1-0 lead. They had also come from behind in the UAE to level the two-Test series with Pakistan and take the ODIs by an authoritative 4-1 margin. They blanked world champions India in a three-match ODI series in December and most recently defeated Australia in the final of the one-day tri-series in Zimbabwe.Australia had also handed them a low during a hotly-contested Test series in February-March this year, when South Africa went down 2-1 at home. Also, an ICC trophy remained out of South Africa’s reach when they fumbled in the semi-final of the World T20.
