The rumbling debate over club v country priorities resurfaced when Ireland’s captain William Porterfield was forced to withdraw from their squad for this weekend’s Friends Provident Trophy match against Worcestershire because he was wanted at short notice by Gloucestershire, where he is a contracted player.Porterfield was told on Friday afternoon that he was needed as cover for Craig Spearman, who had reported a minor niggle in his hip, for Sunday’s match. What is worse for Ireland is that if he plays in the game, it will automatically rule him out of the remainder of Ireland’s Friends Provident Trophy campaign. There was some good news for Ireland when Gary Wilson was released by Surrey to appear in the match.

Raina gem inspires Chennai to victory

In a demonstration of power-hitting with which he carried Chennai Super Kings in the first IPL, Suresh Raina again showed his ability to dominate and, when the need arose, get out of a jam

How they were out
Cometh the hour, cometh the man …•Associated PressIn a demonstration of power-hitting with which he carried Chennai Super Kings in the first IPL, Suresh Raina again showed his ability to dominate and, when the need arose, get out of a jam. Chennai were in early trouble after being put in to bat but the early loss of the openers to Shane Warne’s introduction of spin didn’t deter Raina, who dispatched the Rajasthan Royals attack to all parts of SuperSport Park. His one-man show was complemented by a disciplined and enthusiastic fielding display – including a wicket and two catches to the man of the moment – and Chennai wrapped up victory by 38 runs. The spade work for victory had been done with a gem from Raina. His blazing innings started and ended in the face of adversary but it didn’t show on his face or in his choice of shots. Chennai had lost their leading run-scorer, Matthew Hayden, and Parthiv Patel to loose shots against Yusuf Pathan, who opened the attack with Dimitri Mascarenhas. But after that edgy start Chennai were put back on track through a 67-run liaison between Raina and S Badrinath. Raina was due a good score and he decided attack was the best way of defence. He took the initiative early on, taking Mascarenhas for four and six and then clubbing Yusuf over long-off for six more. Badrinath was promoted ahead of MS Dhoni, Jacob Oram and Albie Morkel with Chennai in trouble and he reciprocated with a smart cameo of 29. He relieved the pressure with three off-side boundaries and hit Yusuf out of the attack. Badri’s inventiveness – making room, getting the wrists into play, lofting over the infield – allowed Raina to continue blazing and he carved a brilliant front-foot six over point off Munaf Patel’s first delivery.Once he found his tempo, Raina was unstoppable. A deft tickle for four off Siddharth Trivedi was one for the purists, a thick inside-edge next ball for the same result just the bit of luck Raina needed to script an epic. He continued to produce punishing pulls and gorgeous shots down the ground, but the slice over cover-point was the sight of the evening. Shane Warne was pulled and cut for boundaries in his first over as Raina reached fifty from 27 balls.By now the mood in both camps had reversed. Rajasthan’s early momentum faded into repeated misfields that allowed boundaries, and where Chennai had been unsure with the bat at the start, Badrinath was uppercutting for four. There were risks, but they were calculated. The fifty-run partnership needed just 33 deliveries.Rajasthan took two wickets shortly after the break but with Dhoni giving him strike, Raina broke the shackles with consecutive boundaries in the 17th over. The run rate had now crossed seven and increased with consecutive sixes, both sliced over covers, in a 24-run 18th over during which Kamran Khan had to limp off with a twisted ankle. In the last over Raina raised his bat on 98, when the electronic scoreboard got it wrong after he slapped four past cover. Next ball was slashed up in the air and excellently taken by Graeme Smith at deep backward point. The only batsman to cross 30, Raina’s exemplary 98 off 55 balls lifted Chennai to a competitive total. That innings not only gave the crowd something to cheer about but also gave Chennai’s bowlers a solid platform to work with. A revamped new-ball attack of Morkel and Sudeep Tyagi kept it tidy and waited for errors, which came rather soon. Smith’s vigilance had played a big role in the last game but here he was impetuous, reaching out and guiding Morkel to point in the second over. Swapnil Asnodkar was another to fall going for a big shot, except that he swung his bat down onto his own stumps. As if his innings wasn’t torture enough for Rajasthan, Raina starred with the ball. Rob Quiney was given a life when Dhoni fluffed a stumping, but the bowler had his revenge when he beat bat with a slider.Yusuf came out blazing but failed to convert, lofting L Balaji down to long-off where the man who could do no wrong took the catch. Dhoni held back on using Balaji till the 11th over and the bowler immediately made an impact, not allowing any room. When Ravindra Jadeja skied Balaji miles into the starry night and Hayden settled under a steepler, the candle had gone out. The rest was a formality as Balaji took four, a solid comeback after a poor last match. It was apt that the last wicket, a massive top edge, should land in Raina’s hands. His grip remained firm from start to finish.

Luke Wright’s brisk century carried England Lions to a massive total, and going into the final day in Lincoln the tourists were nine wickets away from claiming the series.England resumed the day on 56 for 0 and their openers, Robert Key and Stephen Moore, extended their stand to 82 when Key (38) went lbw to Brent Arnel. Moore (41) followed shortly afterwards, the first of James Franklin’s three wickets. Joe Denly – bowled for 7 driving at left-arm spinner Bruce Martin – and Samit Patel failed to get going and Jonathan Trott’s dismissal for a rather fluent 60-ball 51 just after lunch left England Lions at 165 for 5.Thats when Wright stepped up, collecting boundaries at a good clip. Against some tidy bowling, Wright still brought up his half-century and adding 117 in 28 overs with Ben Scott (47). Scott continued his good match with some powerful cuts and pulls. Though slower than Wright, Scott’s effort ensured England Lions shut out the home side. Wright plundered 11 fours and a six in his 96-ball 105 – his fourth first-class century – and was ninth out at 353, lofting a catch to deep midwicket, and prompting Key to declare. That left New Zealand A a target of 457 and 18 overs to negotiate before the close. Their chase began on a poor note with the fast bowler Mark Davies handing the home captain Jamie How his second single-digit score of the match. From 15 for 1 New Zealand were carried without further loss to stumps thanks to Aaron Redmond and Daniel Fynn, batting on 27 and 28 respectively, but the final day will need some serious stonewalling.

Youri Tielemans was poor against Man City

Leicester City slumped to their second Premier League loss of the season after reigning champions Manchester City left the King Power Stadium with a 1-0 victory on Saturday.

The Foxes had already defeated the Cityzens this season, securing the Community Shield in the opening fixture of 2021/22, but they couldn’t repeat the trick this time around.

It was an exciting, evenly contested game, though, and Brendan Rodgers will have come away thinking about what could have been had his side taken one of their big chances.

Winger Harvey Barnes came closest to finding the back on the net, having one effort well saved by Ederson before clipping the top of the bar with a late effort.

However, it was arguably another one of Leicester’s first-team regulars who really let Rodgers down against Manchester City.

As per SofaScore, Youri Tielemans received a match rating of just 6.2 out of 10, the lowest tally for any player on the pitch, and when taking a closer inspection at his underlying numbers, it’s clear to see why.

The Belgium international midfielder was suffocated in the centre of the pitch and was unable to get on the ball regularly or find his teammates with penetrative passes on the rare occasions that he was in possession.

As a result, the technically gifted maestro achieved a passing accuracy of just 79%, failed to make any key passes and had only 55 touches of the ball, 10 fewer than goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel managed.

Tielemans also lost possession 15 times during the 90 minutes and struggled physically, winning just four of his 11 duels in Leicester’s engine room.

The 24-year-old’s inability to win the midfield battle significantly hampered his side’s chances of securing a positive result over the champions, and Rodgers has every right to feel let down by one of his side’s star men.

And, in other news…Get it done: Leicester make contact over £30m wizard, he’s a “great talent”

Leicester make contact over Domenico Berardi

Leicester City have reportedly made contact with Sassuolo ahead of a possible move for winger Domenico Berardi.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato (as relayed by the Leicester Mercury), the Foxes are potentially lining up a January move for the 27-year-old and have already entered talks with the Serie A outfit.

The report states that: “The one between Berardi and Sassuolo is a beautiful, intense marriage, but destined to end soon.

“Domenico has decided to leave the club and has long ago communicated this to the management. There have been some in-depth contacts with Leicester, a track to be followed carefully in view of the January transfer market.

“But several clubs in Serie A are also moving on the strong European champion,” it concludes, meaning director of football Jon Rudkin will have to move quickly in order to secure his transfer target’s services.

He’s a great talent

The powerful and pacey attacked was part of Italy’s victorious squad in this year’s European Championship, providing two assists in six appearances for the Azzurri throughout the tournament.

And his impressive displays at Euro 2020 saw Berardi linked with a move to Leicester and several other top teams across the continent, although he ended up remaining at the Mapei Stadium despite the continued speculation.

However, a winter move now appears to be on the cards, and he could be available at a discount price, with Sassuolo’s hierarchy reportedly dropping their €40 million asking price by five or six million.

With Brendan Rodgers’ currently boasting Marc Albrighton as their only natural option on the right-wing, pulling off a move for the £30m Berardi would provide the current FA Cup holders with added quality and competition in the final third of the pitch.

In 30 Serie A appearances last term, Berardi bagged an outstanding 17 goals, providing a further eight assists for his teammates, highlighting his top-class ability in attack.

Tottenham’s director of football Fabio Paratici has previously commented on the highly-rated winger and admitted that he tried to sign him at Juventus, claiming that he is a “great talent” amid reported interest from Spurs.

Therefore, a move for the Italian ace at the midway point in the campaign would provide a significant boost to Leicester’s top-four hopes as they aim to return to Europe’s elite cup competition.

Harry Kane seeking Spurs contract extension

Harry Kane is expected to push for a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

Ian McGarry, who is one half of ‘The Transfer Window’ podcast alongside The Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles, has claimed that the 28-year-old’s representatives will try to negotiate a bumper extension to his current £200k-per-week contract after the striker’s move to Manchester City never materialised.

“My information is that Kane’s position now is that his representative, who is his brother Charlie Kane, is hopeful of negotiating an upgrade on Kane’s current contract,” he revealed.

“That would include a release clause, meaning that Kane could leave next summer or indeed in January for a set fee, rather than the haggling which went on during the last few months between City and Tottenham.

“Kane himself still sees his future as playing in a team that will win trophies, something that he has not experienced.”

The right move?

After a long saga throughout the summer transfer window, the England international finally put an end to speculation linking him with an exit to the defending champions.

It seems as if City were never prepared to pay in excess of £150m, having splashed £100m on his international teammate Jack Grealish from Aston Villa earlier in the window, and that has left Kane with relationships to repair.

That should be a fairly easy task considering just how crucial he is to this Lilywhites side. He scored or assisted 54.4% of all their league goals scored last season, and already this campaign, he sits top of the key passes per game charts by some margin, showing he can be a big influence under new manager Nuno Santo.

However, as a prolific goalscorer and a product from the club’s youth academy, Kane has always been a fan favourite and popular figure around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

This latest development only bodes well for their chances of keeping hold of him for the remainder of his career – and on the other hand, the inclusion of a release clause would mean that chairman Daniel Levy gets his way once again and that’ll be for the benefit of the club rather than the player.

Spurs will get the services of Kane for the foreseeable future and that gives them the very best chance of success, given his influence. Similarly, if City – or another club – come calling again, the north Londoners will get every penny they deserve. It’s a win-win and exactly why the Lilywhites faithful must be elated with this update.

AND in other news, Nuno Santo could discover Spurs’ next Dele Alli by unleashing “bright” 20 y/o prodigy…

Chennai Superstars remained atop the ICL points table thanks to a five-run win over Delhi Giants, who slipped to their third defeat. It was a close game, with Delhi hitting 19 off the last over when needing 25, but ultimately the brace of top-order wickets were responsible for their defeat.Having chosen to bat, Chennai’s start was poor. Ian Harvey fell for 4, edging TP Sudhindra, R Jesuraj was run out for 5, and Abid Nadi trapped Russel Arnold lbw first ball. It was an uncharacteristic top-order failure, and Chennai owed plenty to a 77-run stand between Hemang Badani and R Sathish.Nabi’s second over went for 16, with Badani hitting 14 of them. G Vignesh played a few handsome shots but Shane Bond needed just four deliveries to strike. Vignesh backed away too far and was bowled for 24. Enter Sathish, who collected four boundaries in eight balls. With Badani smartly rotating the strike and finding the boundary, Chennai were back on course.Sathish picked up two more boundaries and a six in his 28-ball 41. Captain Stuart Law proved his worth with a cameo 28 from 17 and Badani finished unbeaten on 51 from 45 balls. Chennai finished on 166 for 6, meaning Delhi needed to score at 8.35 an over to win.Not for the first time, Delhi lost steam after a good start. Marvan Atapattu, who had just 29 runs in three games before this, and Monish Mishra hit 60 in 7.2 overs. Mishra was belligerent, carving 36 from 20 balls, before he was first out, bowled around his legs by Syed Mohammad. Atapattu was run out for 25 just after and Nantie Hayward removed Syed Abbas Ali for 3. Abhinav Bali’s wicket, bowled by Sathish for 10, hurt Delhi further.”The team haven’t been getting starts, though, and I’ve been going in with us needing 10 and 11 an over and having to hit boundaries from ball one,” Paul Nixon said before this match. When Nixon walked in at 90 for 3 in the 13th over, Delhi indeed needed boundaries. They didn’t come at any quick rate however, even though Nixon slapped Hayward for three in four balls. Shabbir Ahmed cleaned up Nixon for 24 at the start of the 19th over and Delhi went into the last over, bowled by Bond, needing 25. They got 19 thanks to some lusty hitting from Dhruv Mahajan.

AVFC: Fans buzz at Axel Tuanzebe confirmation

Aston Villa announced the loan signing of Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe on Sunday afternoon.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa supporters flocked to the official confirmation on social media.

Tuanzebe has arrived on a season-long deal, his third temporary move to Villa Park during his career.

The 23-year-old, who has made 35 appearances for Villa during his previous spells, was on the bench just hours after a move was announced in Villa’s 3-1 win over Salernitana.

The defender didn’t feature at Villa Park against the Italian side but has now become the club’s fifth senior addition of the window and first signing to provide cover to Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa.

Villa fans react

Villa posted the news regarding Tuanzebe just hours before their final pre-season fixture ahead of the new season.

This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with plenty delighted and one describing a move as ‘great’.

Moore and Mitchell seal 10-wicket rout

Worcestershire 457 for 8 dec and 102 for 0 (Moore 58*, Mitchell 44*) beat Glamorgan 279 (Imran 5-50) and 279 (Ali 6-58)
ScorecardIn mid-afternoon, after some determined resistance from the doomed Glamorgan, Worcestershire completed their third championship victory of the season and moved to second place in Division Two of the championship. They owed much to their dynamic quartet of seam bowlers, who bowled with admirable skill and persistence on what remained to the end a sound batting wicket.Glamorgan began the day with 189 for 7 following on, just 11 runs ahead. Perhaps local supporters doubted their team’s ability to finish off the match quickly, or else they were desperate to ensure that victory was completed, because several hundred of them turned up for play that might well have been over within half an hour. But the overnight pair of James Harris and Jason Gillespie continued their stubborn defiance of Worcestershire’s impressive pace attack, and soon took the score past 200. Despite a couple of frenzied appeals, they rarely looked in trouble, and every now and then played a handsome drive that reached the boundary. It took almost an hour before the first wicket fell, as Harris groped outside the off stump to a rather wide ball from Mason and was given out caught behind for a very creditable 43. The pair had added 79 for the eighth wicket and successfully avoided the innings defeat. Still the visitors refused to roll over, and it was not until Kabir Ali took the new ball that he was able to break through the defences of David Harrison (7) and remove his off stump. Finally the last man Dean Cosker hung around for a while, until he was caught at the wicket for 8, off Kabir again. Gillespie was left stranded on 49, the highest score of the innings, off 91 balls, an admirable mixture of steadiness and well-judged strokes, most notably a powerful off-drive to the boundary off Kabir with the new ball. For once, the new star Imran Arif had failed to feature, but Kabir stepped in with six wickets, a fine performance that had locals calling for a recall to England colours.By a curious coincidence, not only did both Glamorgan innings total 279, but in both the seventh wicket had fallen at 165. The last three wickets had thus added 114 runs each time, rather an indictment of the top order, especially those who had reached double figures (in nine instances out of twelve in the two innings), yet failed to go on to a major score. Worcestershire needed 102 to win.It had taken the home side 93 minutes to wrap up the innings, and they thus had an awkward period to survive before lunch. Daryl Mitchell and Steven Moore did so solidly while adding eight runs, but even after the break they left nothing to chance and took a while to get going. In the tenth over Moore twice pulled Gillespie for four and then cut him for another, and they were away.Moore at 37 was dropped at slip off Harris, while Mitchell on 27 lofted a drive that just cleared mid-off, but the end result was never in doubt. Glamorgan just did not have the bowling firepower to upset Worcestershire. Moore reached his fifty with a big six over long-on, over the new stand at the Diglis End, off Cosker; it took him 75 balls.Shortly afterwards, Mitchell cut Alex Wharf for four to win the match by ten wickets – except that, as they had completed a single before the ball went over the boundary, under the dubious new law he was only credited with one. He finished on 44 to Moore’s 58. Unusually, there was not a single extra conceded in this innings, a small but definite credit to Glamorgan. The emergence of Imran has caused some excitement at Worcester. With Imran to add to their already impressive international pace attack – imported though it may be – of Kabir, Jones and Mason, they now boast a line-up stronger than many Division One teams this season. Their ambitions and expectations are high, and they confidently expect to return to the top league next season.A last note on Imran: Worcestershire’s chief executive Mark Newton announced that he has today signed a contract with the county for 2009 and 2010, conditional to his obtaining a British passport, which he believes to be imminent.
