Mashonaland win by 2 wickets in Alexandra

The fourth and final day was by far the most dramatic with the hosts Mashonaland A winning by two wickets in a tight finish soon after lunch

Larry Moyo25-Mar-2002The fourth and final day was by far the most dramatic with the hosts Mashonaland A winning by two wickets in a tight finish soon after lunch. The day began with Mashonaland A claiming the remaining Manicaland wicket two overs into the first session. The visitors could only add one more run totheir overnight total of 205 before number 11 batsman Ian Coulson was out, bowled for a duck by Rennie who finished the innings with three wickets from 49 off 21 overs. This meant that Mashonaland A had the whole day to reach a victory target of 155. But it was not to be an easy target for them and it needed the experience of Board XI members Mark Vermeulen and wicketkeeper Alester Maregwede to claim maximum points eventually. Opener Vermeulen scored 43 off just 57 balls whileMaragwede, batting at number six, topscored with 45 off 80 balls. While the players had expected the final day to belong to spinners, it turned out to be the opposite as seamers Guy Whittall and Justin Lewis took thefirst seven of the Mashonaland A wickets to fall. Whittall ripped through the Mashonaland A top order as he claimed the wickets of opener Taylor (5), numberthree Andre Neethling (0) and number four Gavin Rennie (6) to leave them struggling at 51/3 after 12.5 overs.Lewis then took over and claimed the wickets of Elton Chigumbura (15), Vermeulen and number seven Norbert Manyande (0), while Whittall returned to remove captain Henry Olonga (11) as Mashonaland A looked set for adisappointing finish at 118/7 after 36.4 overs. With 37 more runs needed to with three wickets in hand Maregwede and 17 year-old Prosper Utseya added 22 runs with the former looking increasingly comfortable with the Manicaland attack. Just when Maragwede was looking at scoring a half-century he lost concentration and edged a Soma delivery to the wicketkeeper. Pressure returned to Mashonaland A as they still needed 15 more runs to win as number 10 David Mutendera went to the crease.Mutendera hit two fours while Utseya added singles to leave the scores level after 49.2 overs. Needing a single to win, Mutendera was deceived by a Somadelivery and only managed to sky the ball. As Mutendera completed a run, Ferreira went under the ball and with everyone expecting a routine catch, theball dropped between his gloves and the match went to Mashonaland A.It was Mashonaland A’s second win in three matches with Matabeleland and Mashonaland remaining while Manicaland are still looking for a win with just twomatches against Midlands and Matabeleland remaining.

Srinivas (107) leads strong Hyderabad reply

Undaunted by the imposing Madhya Pradesh total of 490, Hyderabad did well in replying with 300 for four wickets off 99 overs at stumps on the third day of the Ranji Trophy pre-quarterfinal at the Daly college grounds in Indore on Monday.Hyderabad resumed at 34 without loss and openers Daniel Manohar and wicketkeeper M Srinivas put on 116 runs off 31 overs before the former gave Narendra Hirwani a return catch. Manohar faced 111 balls and hit seven of them to the ropes. Srinivas then found another able partner in Anirudh Singh and the two increased the score by 89 runs during a second wicket association that lasted 32.3 overs. Srinivas, who had by then reached his century, was second out at 205 when he was bowled by Bundela. For his 107, the 26-year-old right hander batted 4-1/2 hours, faced 186 balls and hit 12 fours and a six.Anirudh Singh was third out at 223 when he was caught by Yadav off Chauhan for 42. He faced 108 balls and hit five fours and a six. But Vanka Pratap and Vinay Kumar (27) then carried on the good work by adding 50 runs off 19.1 overs for the fourth wicket. Vinay Kumar was bowled by Chauhan but by close, Vanka Pratap had diligently built his score to 47 off 107 balls with five hits to the ropes. Keeping him company is skipper A Nandakishore (7). The stage is set for a keen duel for the all important first innings lead on Tuesday.

Docherty discusses Gers exit

Greg Docherty has revealed he knows he made the right decision by leaving Glasgow Rangers to sign for Hull City.

The Lowdown: Docherty enjoys Hull success

Docherty made 19 appearances for the Gers, racking up six assists (Transfermarkt), but he never really received a chance to impress on a regular basis and instead spent the majority of his time out on loan across England and Scotland.´

Last summer, he completed a permanent move to Hull, and has managed six goals and four assists in all competitions as the Tigers have earned promotion to the Championship.

The Latest: Docherty shares delight

Speaking to the PA News Agency (via Football League World), Docherty shared his happiness at swapping Ibrox for the KCOM Stadium. He said:

“I spoke to Steven Gerrard when I was leaving Rangers and he said he thought Hull would be a good challenge for me as we could try to win the league.

“But it’s so easy to say ‘go win the league’ – it’s nowhere near as straight forward as that.

“To pip Peterborough we’ve had to go the last 14 games unbeaten, winning 11 of them.

“It’s a majorly gruelling league with 46 fixtures. At the start of the season, there was probably eight or nine teams thinking they could challenge.

“So there’s a lot of relief that we’ve got promotion. Once we clinched that, I thought to myself, ‘Naw, that’s not enough. I want a medal’.

“I’ve always wanted to win trophies. I’m 24 and I can now say I’ve ticked that off. A lot of people have brilliant careers but never win anything, so that’s why I’ll always remember this season and this moment.

“Since Christmas I feel like I’ve grown and really kicked on. I definitely made the right call coming down here.”

The Verdict: The right move

In terms of prestige, Hull cannot compare to Rangers. The latter regularly compete for trophies and will embark on a run in the Champions League next season, while Hull have never once competed in Europe and are only now getting out of the third tier of English football.

However, for Docherty, the move made perfect sense. Unfortunately, he clearly wasn’t a part of Steven Gerrard’s plans at Ibrox, but he has played in all but two games in the league for his new club. Hull have won League One comfortably, and now Docherty can attack the Championship as he continues to improve. At 24, and with 27 goals to his name throughout his career, he has plenty of room for development. There is no doubt he made the right decision.

In other news, Alan Hutton has suggested this man could replace Filip Helander at Rangers.

Spurs: Mason must axe Aurier vs Saints

Ryan Mason takes charge of his first game as Tottenham Hotspur’s interim boss later this evening as the struggling north London outfit welcome Southampton in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old was appointed following the surprise sacking of Jose Mourinho earlier this week and has been tasked with steering the ship for the remainder of the season, alongside fellow youth coach Chris Powell.

It’ll be the culmination of a 20-year association for the former academy graduate, having risen up through the ranks to make his first-team debut aged just 17 in November 2008, to captaining the side, and leading out Spurs’ next crop of youngsters in a coaching capacity after seeing his playing career tragically cut short.

The Lilywhites sit five points adrift of the top four in seventh place, and a win could see them leapfrog defending champions, Liverpool, their failed European Super League co-conspirators.

It’s a big week for Mason and the team as they also have the small matter of the Carabao Cup final against runaway leaders Manchester City on Sunday. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how he shakes up the side post-Mourinho.

The Portuguese’s final swansong saw Spurs draw 2-2 with Everton and once again, they were victims of their own downfall as that recurring theme of defensive mistakes cost them dearly.

Now, there is very little he can do outside of a window to drastically change these fortunes, but he could do himself the world of good if he opts to drop several players that have continuously let the side down.

[snack-amp-story url=https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-and-recent-gossip” title=”Read this week’s Spurs news, latest transfer rumours and more!]

Serge Aurier is perhaps one who falls into this category more than anyone.

The £23m arrival from PSG was here under Mauricio Pochettino, where Harry Redknapp claimed that “they’ve [the players] got him the sack,” and remained a key part of first-team plans under Mourinho, too, so the same must be said – surely?

According to The Sun, Daniel Levy feared a revolt after several stars came to him slamming the Special One’s methods in recent weeks.

Initially, things looked to be changing as the Ivorian right-back usurped summer signing Matt Doherty in the starting XI, and whilst he somehow found his way back in recently, it didn’t take long for his old self to come to the surface.

Once lambasted as a “liability” by ex-striker Darren Bent, Aurier was the brunt of the scathing criticism following defeat to Manchester United and Sky Sports’ punditry duo of Roy Keane and Micah Richards went to town on the Spurs star.

“He’s got a rick in him. He has caused loads of problems. I have described him as a bit of a car crash,” explained Keane (via a clip sourced by Football Daily). “Defensively I think he doesn’t smell danger or see the danger. And that’s been a huge problem for Spurs, the right-back position.”

And Richards believes his inability to track back has cost them hugely in recent matches, adding that Aurier was “lazy.”

After being axed from the side for five straight league outings, the defensive calamity was trusted to start against United, and then Everton. In neither game did he manage to surpass a rating of 6.3, as per SofaScore.

The £18m-rated will only let Mason down too if he starts tonight, so the caretaker boss must show no mercy and look to axe him from the starting XI.

Perhaps he can instead trust a player he’s worked with in the academy set-up in Japhet Tanganga, who in truth, has done little wrong to warrant losing his place.

Celtic set to perform Roy Keane U-turn

As Celtic ride the wave of change at Parkhead, there is one area of the club that needs addressing before anything else; the first-team manager.

The Bhoys lost Neil Lennon a number of weeks ago now but they’re still no closer to discovering who his successor will be.

What’s the word?

Roy Keane is a name that will tremble fear throughout the Green Brigade. When he was first linked with the Hoops job it didn’t go down too well with supporters.

Fortunately, just days after it looked as though an interview had taken place, he was suddenly out of the reckoning.

However, fresh reports state that he could well be back in the conversation.

That’s according to Football Insider who claim that behind-the-scenes developments have led to the Irishman being in the frame for the position again.

Keane is gaining more support from the Celtic hierarchy after several stumbling blocks emerged regarding Eddie Howe.

Big U-turn on the cards

There have been several twists and turns to this circus of a managerial pursuit but this is perhaps the biggest U-turn yet from majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

For weeks now it’s looked as though Howe would be given the gig but circumstances out of Desmond’s control have taken over.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-lampard-klimala-ajer-gossip” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

The 43-year-old doesn’t want to return to management until the summer while he’s also facing problems over his backroom staff.

Howe wants Richard Hughes as his director of football but the Glaswegian outfit are keen on Fergal Harkin. This is something Celtic have reportedly said no to.

There are also problems with interest emerging elsewhere. It’s thought that both Crystal Palace and Brighton are keeping tabs on the Englishman.

You can hardly blame Desmond for turning his attention to other candidates, therefore. The frustrating thing, though, is that he appears to be taking the easy way out.

There is no interest from anyone else in Keane that we know of and judging by his ten-year absence from the managerial world, there won’t be many courting his services in the coming months.

This is such a crucial point in Celtic’s modern history. Fail to get their next appointment spot on and they could be left in the dust by Rangers for a considerable period of time.

Keane has never won more than 42% of his matches while in charge of a club; something that speaks volumes about his abilities as a number one.

Instead of taking the easy way out, Desmond needs to get back to the drawing board and avoid this almighty U-turn for the greater good of the club.

West Ham land huge Rice injury blow

David Moyes will surely be buzzing as West Ham United are only expected to be without Declan Rice for four to five weeks through injury.

That’s according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who has claimed that Rice will be fit for this summer’s European Championship and that he is pushing to return as soon as possible.

Rice sustained lateral knee ligament damage during England’s World Cup qualifier with Poland last month, and was expected to miss at least six weeks.

A worst-case scenario could have seen Rice be ruled out for the rest of the season or require surgery, throwing his hopes of representing the Three Lions at Euro 2020 into serious doubt.

Ornstein has now delivered West Ham and England a huge boost by suggesting the initial fears were overplayed, and claiming that Rice will be available for Gareth Southgate this summer.

“Rice, we’re assured, will be fit in time,” he said on The Ornstein and Chapman Podcast.

“I know that he saw the six-week timeframe on being a little bit on the cautious side and was aiming to be back in four or five weeks max from this very small tear to the lateral collateral knee ligament in his right leg.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-west-ham-news-and-views” title=”Latest West Ham news, views and gossip!”]

Moyes will be buzzing to hear that Rice only sustained a very small tear to his knee ligaments and that he is expected to be available much sooner than first feared, though it naturally remains to be seen if he will feature again this season.

But a minimum four-week lay-off would see Rice return to training as West Ham enter the final month of the Premier League season, meaning he could yet still have a part to play in the London Stadium native’s final fixtures and push for Champions League qualification.

Rice was a key factor in West Ham establishing themselves in the conversation for a top-four finish before his injury, having proven to be – as Southgate describes – an “outstanding” player at recovering possession in the midfield area.

The England international had been able to protect the Hammers backline magnificently all season, and sparked the occasional attack with driven runs through the centre of the pitch.

Only Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek (73) and Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill (61) – who has been linked with the Irons – have registered a greater number of interceptions in the Premier League this term than Rice (58), per WhoScored.

Moyes was disappointed to have to lose that presence in his engine room when Rice’s injury was announced, and will be itching to unleash the 22-year-old again as soon as possible.

Gers fans love Morelos comments

Many Glasgow Rangers fans are absolutely delighted with comments from Alfredo Morelos after the Gers confirmed their status as Premiership champions.

The celebrations are in full flow in Glasgow after the Gers picked up their 55th league title over the weekend. They didn’t even need to do it themselves on Sunday as Celtic’s failure to beat Dundee United was enough to get them over the line. In truth, this has been a formality for weeks, if not months, and there are still six league matches to play this season (BBC).

After the confirmation, the Gers’ media team were working around the clock to speak to as many people associated with this triumph as possible. £10.8m-valued Colombia international Morelos rarely gives interviews, but he spoke after the title was confirmed to share his delight.

These Gers supporters were absolutely delighted to see him speak, and they took to social media to share their thoughts on the 24-year-old’s words after they were shared on the 55-time Scottish champions’ official Twitter account.
