Graeme Swann has been named as England’s Most Valuable Player over the winter, according to the ranking system used by the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA). Swann’s 10-wicket haul against Sri Lanka earlier this month helped England to a first Test win in five matches and took his tally to 39 wickets in all formats.Swann held off Kevin Pietersen, who scored 151 as England levelled the two-Test series with Sri Lanka at 1-1, to win the FTI MVP award, which includes a cheque for £2,000 to be given the charity Lowe Syndrome Trust. Swann has previously been England’s MVP twice before – after the tours to South Africa and Bangladesh in 2009-10 and following the 2010 English summer. The draw in Colombo – in which Swann finished with match figures of 10 for 181 – also ensured England retained their No. 1 Test ranking for a while longer.”I’m delighted to have won the FTI MVP after what has been a tough winter and it’s obviously great that we’re still number one too,” Swann said. “It is nice to win any award but it is especially pleasing to win one where you are compared to your team-mates on hard statistics.”Losing the three Tests against Pakistan was a real blow, but we picked ourselves up in the ODIs and again after the defeat in Galle to prove there’s plenty of fight in this team. The performance in Colombo bodes well for the summer, and hopefully we can carry that momentum into the Test series against the West Indies.”Sebastian Mathews, senior vice-president of FTI Consulting, said: “Congratulations to Graeme on his win, not only for this winter, but for becoming the first person to win a hat-trick of England FTI MVP awards. It was a very exciting end to the winter FTI MVPs where Graeme was run very close and this sets us up for an exciting summer of cricket ahead of us.”The MVP ranking system, used by the PCA since 2007, takes into account factors such as bowlers’ economy rates and the percentage of a team’s runs scored by individual batsmen, alongside more standard measurements such as wickets, runs and catches.Swann also topped the individual Test statistics with 146 points from five matches at an average of 29.17. His total was over 40 points clear of nearest challenger James Anderson. ODI captain Alastair Cook led from the front in 50-over cricket, topping the standings with 113 points, while Pietersen, who scored 30% of England’s runs in the shortest format, was the T20 FTI MVP.Edited by Alan Gardner

Mohsin blames batting for limited-overs loss

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s outgoing interim coach, has said every limited-overs match against England could have been won

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Feb-2012

Both Mohsin Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq said an overhaul of the Pakistan team wasn’t necessary•AFP

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s outgoing interim coach, has said he was surprised with the team’s performance in the limited-over series against England, and insisted that every match had been winnable. Pakistan lost all four one-dayers before losing the Twenty20 series 2-1.”I am disappointed with the performance,” Mohsin told reporters on his arrival in Karachi. “We played so well throughout the Test series and beat the world No.1 team. I am surprised at the team’s performance in the limited-overs matches but every target against England was achievable.” Pakistan defended 144 in the first T20, before failing to chase down targets of 151 and 130 in the remaining two matches.Mohsin was Pakistan’s chief selector before being given an interim coaching role in September 2011 after Waqar Younis resigned on medical grounds. During his short tenure, Mohsin coached Pakistan to series wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh besides the clean sweep of England in the Tests.”I am satisfied with my tenure and did my best,” Mohsin said. “I am ready to serve my country, but my top priority is that it should be in a respected manner and with dignity, without which I will not hold any post. Winning against England in the Tests was special but in limited-over series we lost due to the poor batting and I am disappointed that the team failed (in ODIs and Twenty20s).”But this is the same team that was being lauded only a few days back and now everyone is so critical and talking about inducting new blood, which is again strange.”Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq also warned about making drastic changes to the team, insisting that an overhaul wouldn’t work.”We did try our best but England came back strong and credit must be given to them. I think we are responsible as our batting failed.”Misbah is facing a hostile reaction from the Pakistan public after his 32-ball 28 in the deciding T20, which Pakistan lost by five runs. Pakistan had seemingly been in control, needing 36 off the final five overs with Misbah and Umar Akmal in the middle, and with seven wickets remaining but couldn’t complete the job.”I think we need to take this decision only after assessing our resources and if you have those resources then do that,” he said. “But if you don’t have quality cricketers then it will do harm. If you change for the sake of change it will not help.”All those who watch are sentimental and they talk like this. You sit down and analyse and if you have a replacement for a player then you replace him. Drastic changes will not help.”Edited by Siddarth Ravindran

van Wyk ton in vain as Warriors open account

A round-up of two matches of the SuperSport Series 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Dec-2011The Dolphins made a brave fist of a target of 442, riding on Divan van Wyk’s century, but fell 91 short against Warriors at St George’s Park. van Wyk’s was a lone effort, considering that no other batsman managed to cross fifty. Basheer Walters and Simon Harmer shared seven wickets between them in the second innings to hand Warriors their first win of the season. The Warriors opted to bat but found themselves in trouble on the first day at 26 for 3. Colin Ingram and Wayne Parnell began the repair work with a stand of 81 for the fifth wicket. Parnell struck Tabraiz Shamsi for a six to bring up the 150, but at 44 perished to Robert Frylinck, who took two wickets in an over. Ingram was supported by Walters, who made an exact 50 at No.11. Ingram went on to score 121 before he was dismissed by Kyle Abbott, who took four wickets. Frylinck too finished with a four-for.Parnell was in good form with the ball on the second day, taking 3 for 17 and sharing six wickets with Rusty Theron as the pair shot out Dolphins for 223. Friedel de Wet made 73, but he was the only batsman to pass fifty as his team conceded a lead of 72.The Warriors strenghthened their advantage the following day, thanks to JT Smuts, who made a century, and Arno Jacobs, who made 51. The opener Kelly Smuts gave Warriors command with 49, before his brother took over. Jacobs and JT Smuts added 110 for the third wicket but the Dolphins hit back with middle-order strikes. Parnell and Athenkosi Dyili frustrated the opposition with a stand of 65 for the seventh wicket. The Warriors declared at 369, with Abbott and Frylinck taking three-wicket hauls.Faced with a target of 442, Dolphins took off confidently. Van Wyk and Khaylihle Zondo scored quickly, adding 80 for the first wicket before Harmer got one to turn and bounce, forcing Zondo to fend to silly point. Van Wyk progressed to 102 on the final day. Harmer had him caught eight overs before lunch. The Dolphins went into the final session at 310 for 6 but failed to stick it out as they were bowled out for 350.In another high-scoring encounter, at Bloemfontein, Knights and Titans played out a draw, as the latter came close to chasing down 336. Martin van Jaarsveld blasted an unbeaten 167, off 161 balls but it wasn’t enough as the Titans fell short of the target by 33 runs. The Titans chose to field, but were made to regret that decision as the Knights piled on 438 in just a shade over 90 overs. Riley Rossouw and Morne van Wyk smashed 145 and 139 respectively, to guide Knights’ first-innings effort. Rowan Richards, the left-arm seamer, finished with 5 for 87.The Titans hit back with a first-innings lead of 23, helped by centuries by Farhaan Behardian (141) and Faff de Plessis (153). Quinton Friend took 5 for 53. Boeta Dippenaar (112) and Obus Pienaar (83) led Knights’ effort in their second innings as they were bowled out for 358.van Jaarsveld led by example on the final day, smashing 18 fours and three sixes in his knock. Malusi Siboto, the right-arm seamer, took three wickets as Titans ended on 303 for 6.

Confusion and gamesmanship

India’s chances of taking even a share of silverware from their painful tour of England vanished amid scenes of confusion and gamesmanship at Lord’s

Nagraj Gollapudi at Lord's11-Sep-2011India’s chances of even sharing a trophy during their painful tour of England vanished amid scenes of confusion and gamesmanship at Lord’s. As showers arrived in the closing stages of the run-chase India were the first side to find themselves ahead of the rate, then it was the hosts who edged into pole position before the final blows were struck. So in the end a tie looked the right result because a question emerges: did both teams go against the Spirit of Cricket – that principle so notably invoked earlier in the tour?”We just saw the ugly side of cricket,” MS Dhoni, the India captain, said. “Whichever team has the upperhand does not want to play and whichever team is not on the winning side will try to stick there to try and change the result. It is a part and parcel of cricket and both the sides did that.”When the first brief rain break occurred England were two runs behind the D/L par score of 235, with six wickets down, after 44 overs. Ravi Bopara and Graeme Swann were desperate to get on with the game, but the India captain MS Dhoni was reluctant to let Munaf Patel start his over. Understandably, Dhoni was being fussy about getting his fielders in the right positions. You cannot deny him that right. The England fans trumpeted their boos loud and clear. Two minutes later the umpires decided to stop play. Bopara and Swann, unimpressed, were reluctant to walk off the ground. Suddenly the rain ceased as a flash of sunlight sparkled across the green turf.By then the entire Indian team had left the ground and were on their way to the dressing-room. Only the umpires, Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, and the two England batsmen stood on the field. Munaf even sat in the member’s seat as a thick air of intrigue suddenly hung in the air. Moments later India trundled back and the match resumed towards a tantalising end.”You just expect the rain to go off and somehow you want to get on to the field. Nothing much I could have done,” Dhoni said. “We tried to get back to the dressing-room and waited for the shower to finish,”Nine runs came off the Munaf over, which ultimately proved crucial as by now England were two runs of the par score with 39 needed from the final five overs. Now came the second interruption. This time the drizzle transformed into proper rain, forcing the covers to be spread straight away. Bopara and Swann zipped into the dressing-room, but the India players gathered in a huddle about ten yards inside the ropes at the Pavilion End. It was as if they were performing some sort of ritual that would stop the rain. But the rain dripped hard, forcing the visitors to finally leave the field.”It is human nature,” Alastair Cook, the England captain, said. “When you are ahead of the game and you have got to go off you are obviously going to be happier than the other team. It was quite clear when we came out the first time we wanted to go back out because we were behind and when we came off for the second time we were ahead. To be honest, we would’ve quite liked it to rain for another hour so we wouldn’t have had the last few hours. That is because the desire to win is so huge in both sides.”Cook, though, was fully behind the umpires which perhaps isn’t surprising as England clinched the series. “The umpires have an extremely tough job to know what’s heavy rain and what’s light rain,” he said. “But they were consistent when we came off for the first time and when we came off at the end. I don’t think we should have any complaints about it.”Bopara, the man responsible for rescuing England’s chase from 61 for 3, revealed he was aware of the D/L par score “over-by-over but not ball-by-ball.” Until he decided to swing Munaf over deep midwicket, Bopara had played his shots with care, composure and confidence. But he said he had to take a chance to make sure England did not panic in the final over. What he did not know was his wicket actually changed the match scenario completely. According to the D/L tables the par score at 48.5 overs, with seven wickets down, was 269. Once Bopara was dismissed with seven deliveries before the finish, the par score changed to 270. However, most of the players were unsure what was happening because the scoreboard had already ticked over to show the end-of-over D/L par score of 271.”Some of the guys were confused,” Dhoni admitted. “Some of them thought we had won it, for others they were still like ‘what is the scenario right now?’ Most of us thought it is just another passing shower and we would be able to get back on the field in whatever time. But once back in the dressing-room we had the final sheet of paper which showed the D/L par score and after that it was pretty much sure that it was a tie.”And this time there was no gamesmanship. India’s wait goes on.

Waqar calls for Misbah replacement to be groomed

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, has called for a young captain to be groomed as an eventual replacement to the current leader Misbah-ul-Haq, who is 37 years old.”Being 36-37 is not very young,” Waqar said. “He [Misbah] is very fit and has done very well as captain but age usually catches up, so we need to groom a young captain.”Misbah took over the Test captaincy after dramatic exits by Shahid Afridi, who retired from Tests, and Salman Butt, who was involved in the spot-fixing scandal during the tour to England in 2010. Misbah’s results have been impressive – a drawn series against South Africa in UAE and a win in New Zealand. After the 2011 World Cup, Misbah had to take over the limited-overs captaincy as well. With Afridi, who was in charge of the one-day team until recently, refusing to play under the present PCB administration headed by chairman Ijaz Butt, Misbah is set to lead Pakistan in all three forms of the game on a tour of Zimbabwe in August. Pakistan are due to play one Test, three one-day and two Twenty20 matches and Waqar said Afridi will be missed.”Every cricketer who leaves is missed, like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and then myself were missed and, of course, Afridi will also be missed,” Waqar said. “But there are other youngsters who will take their place.”Waqar also urged former greats such as Javed Miandad to help youngsters develop, particularly at the top of the order. “Whatever help can come is good because we have to take Pakistan cricket forward,” he said. “Our problems in opening are old ones and we are trying to overcome these problems and I would urge former openers like Mohsin Khan, Saeed Anwar, Aamir Sohail and Mudassar Nazar to come and help the openers. Hopefully some new players will develop.”
