Jayawardene ton floors Zimbabwe

How they were out
Hawk-EyeMahela Jayawardene converted the tournament’s fastest fifty into a hundred•AFP

Batting was expected to be difficult on a slow and low pitch in Providence but the touch artist Mahela Jayawardene sparkled with a delightful ton, only the fourth batsman to hit a Twenty20 hundred, to charge Sri Lanka to 173. A heavy downpour after one over into the chase left Zimbabwe needing 104 from 11 initially, but it rained again to terminate the match after five overs were completed. Sri Lanka won on the D\L method as Zimbabwe only reached 29 for 1 when the par score was 43.The rains stayed away, however, until Jayawardene treated the sparse crowd to a charming knock. Only one other batsman in Sri Lanka’s top six touched double digits; it said much about the pitch and the form of the other batsmen but most importantly it highlighted Jayawardene’s mastery. There wasn’t a single shot in violence from Jayawardene. Not one looked ugly. Not for a moment did he look hurried. And yet, his strike-rate was over 150. It was such a graceful knock that it stood out amid the violence that this format usually brings in batsmen. Perhaps it’s his economy of movement and the languid flow of his bat that catches the eye. The experts reckoned the pitch would make hitting on the up a difficult task, that the ball would stop on the batsmen, that timing would be difficult to find. And it appeared so when the likes of Kumar Sangakkara and the rest batted. Not when Jayawardene took strike. There was a delicious six hit on the up over extra cover that was a perfect advertisement for Jayawardene’s skill. He was walking down the track to the medium pace of Elton Chigumbura but kept his head still and balance perfect. Chigumbura shortened his length to try and upset the balance but Jayawardene wafted his wand through the line and the ball soared over the extra-cover boundary.Jayawardene flowed right from the start today, collecting three boundaries in the first over from Chris Mpofu: A cut, a gorgeous on-the-up six over long off and a whiplash on-drive. He repeatedly drove the seamers through the off side and there was even a deft upper cut to a slow bouncer from Chigumbura, but he treated the spinners with more respect. He looked for opportunities to unfurl his cuts and sweeps against the slow men and rotated the strike with wristy nudges. In between, he slog-swept and pulled Price for boundaries, slog swept Graeme Cremer for a six, late cut and swatted Greg Lamb to the boundary.Zimbabwe perhaps erred by not starting with two spinners. Prosper Utseya, who has often bowled with Price in the Powerplays, chose to give Mpofu and Chigumbura three overs with the new ball. Those three overs leaked 35 runs and allowed Jayawardene to cut loose. And he went on to play an innings of style and substance.

West Ham fans flock to Barbosa update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left buzzing following a Sky Sports update on their striker search involving Flamengo forward Gabriel Barbosa.

Irons boss David Moyes has been actively searching for a new striker since club record signing Sebastien Haller left the London Stadium last January.

It is seen as one of the club’s major transfer priorities this window alongside the search for defensive reinforcements and, potentially, the signing of attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard (The Evening Standard).

One player heavily linked with a move to the English capital over these last few days has been Brazil international striker Barbosa as Sky Sports share an update on the Hammers’ forward hunt.

According to their information, the club have now held talks over signing the 25-year-old this month as they identify ‘Gabigol’ as a transfer target.

It is also believed Barbosa is keen on a move to England and the Premier League, watching every West Ham game in particular whilst being impressed with the job manager Moyes is doing at the club.

Irons fans buzz…

Flocking to this update from a reliable source, many Irons fans have been left buzzing and it isn’t hard to see why given his impressive goal return over 2021.

Scoring a head-turning 29 goals over the last calendar year (Transfermarkt), the 17-cap star has certainly proved he can find the back of the net on more than one occasion.

Here’s how West Ham fans reacted as their club hold talks over his signing.

Interest growing in West Ham’s Issa Diop

Interest in West Ham United centre-back Issa Diop is growing ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Santi Aouna, with the Foot Mercato journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that the trio of AC Milan, Newcastle United and Watford have made contact with the Irons regarding a deal for the 24-year-old defender.

Meanwhile, manager David Moyes is believed to be interested in a number of centre-back targets of his own this winter, with Liverpool’s Nathaniel Phillips and LOSC Lille’s Sven Botman thought to be on the 58-year-old’s shortlist – something that the Daily Mail claim is down to the fact that there are ‘questions remaining over the reliability of Frenchman Issa Diop.’

Moyes can axe Diop with Botman signing

While Diop is undeniably a player who is an extremely useful squad member at the London Stadium, should Moyes have the chance to cash in on the former France U21 international this winter, and subsequently replace him with a centre-back of Botman’s ability, it is certainly a move that the Hammers boss must look to pull off.

Indeed, Diop has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Hammers side since his then-club record £22m arrival in east London back in 2018, with the 24-year-old being typically used as a backup option under the management of Moyes.

This has been the case in the current campaign, in which the £10.8m-rated man has made just five Premier League appearances – which have come as a result of both Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna being sidelined due to injuries.

And, over these five league outings, the £61k-per-week defender dubbed a “colossus” by Stuart Pearce has hardly shone for the Hammers, averaging a disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.60 – ranking him as the club’s joint second-worst performer in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Botman has been in rather contrasting form over his 12 Ligue 1 appearances this term, helping his side keep two clean sheets, scoring one goal and providing his teammates with one assist, as well as making an average of 0.8 interceptions, one tackle, 51.5 passes and winning 68% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the 21-year-old, who Kevin Phillips dubbed a “[Virgil] Van Dijk-like signing”, average an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.02, ranking him as Jocelyn Gourvennec’s joint fourth-best player in the French top flight.

As such, should Moyes indeed have the chance to recoup a decent portion of the club’s initial £22m outlay on Diop next month, it would seem very wise for the 58-year-old to do so, before reinvesting the money in a move for the £27m-rated Netherlands U21 international.

Leeds eye Bielsa’s new Pablo Hernandez

Leeds United are among the teams taking a look at Aaron Ramsey this month, according to reports…

What’s the word?

90min claim the Wales international is available for a transfer having fallen out of favour under Massimiliano Allegri at Juventus this season, and despite having 18 months to run on his current contract, the Serie A giants are prepared to let him leave for nothing.

Premier League rivals Newcastle United are also keen, whilst Everton, Wolves and Leicester City are mentioned too.

It’s thought that the former Arsenal maestro, who is valued at just £4.5m by Transfermarkt, is earning over £200k-per-week at the Allianz Stadium.

Pablo Hernandez 2.0

It would not be the first time that Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa has had a vastly experienced and ageing playmaker in attacking midfield.

After nearly five years at the club, Spanish maestro Pablo Hernandez departed Elland Road at the age of 36 last summer. He played an integral role in their rise up into the Premier League and it could be argued that the Argentine misses his presence in the final third.

There has been a serious lack of creativity and goalscoring this season. Only Raphinha (eight goals) has found the net more than twice for Leeds in the top flight, whilst no player has provided more than two assists either, as per WhoScored.

Ramsey was one of the Premier League’s most feared midfielders during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

The 31-year-old provided 65 goals and 65 assists in 371 matches in north London, in which he recorded a career-best tally of 13 goals and ten assists during the 2013/14 campaign, via Transfermarkt. That’s not to mention his three FA Cup winners medals, too.

Such form earned comparisons to Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, whilst another former Gunner in Martin Keown has previously waxed lyrical about his ability and leadership qualities.

“He continues to mature as a player and develop. He’s a real leader now in this Arsenal team,” he said to BT Sport in April 2019 (via the Daily Mail). “Playing in a deeper role, as he did under Arsene Wenger – I think that’s the best role for him. If you want Ozil and him in the same team. He’s so imp to everything to do. It’s the energy – the box to box energy. He’s become an outstanding technician.”

Capped 71 times by Wales, Ramsey could well become Bielsa’s new Hernandez in west Yorkshire should Victor Orta and co win the race to sign him on a bargain free transfer this month.

CSA asked Kenya to foot series bill

Cricket South Africa is understood to have demanded almost US$100,000 to play two one-day internationals against Kenya last month. The news is a blow to leading Associates who are already struggling to arrange matches against Full Member countries and completely goes against the ICC’s aim of the game’s leading sides helping in the development of the game.South Africa played Kenya twice at the end of 2008, and it is understood that a similar arrangement was discussed for two matches in South Africa in late October or early November. However, Gerald Majola, the chairman of CSA, contacted Cricket Kenya with the demand and gave it three days to come back with an answer, even though that included a weekend. Although he was asked for more time to consider his proposal, Cricinfo has learned that arrangements were already in place for Zimbabwe to play the matches. It is not known whether Zimbabwe had to pay the same fee.”The simple story is that Kenya wanted to play some games against South Africa, but CSA would have incurred costs to host those games, so we were prepared to meet them halfway on the costs,” Majola told Cricinfo. “Unfortunately, they could not make up that amount, but there was no money paid out from Cricket Kenya whatsoever.”While the Kenyan board declined to comment, the fact that its total funding from the ICC is less than US$1 million a year, something known to CSA, means the request was never likely to be a serious option. As the Kenyans would also have paid for their flights and accommodation, had the games gone ahead then they could have accounted for up to 20% of the board’s annual budget.CSA needed to play matches to help fulfil its current broadcast contract. In the event, the two games against Zimbabwe were one-sided affairs played out in front of almost empty grounds.

Everton: Benitez must unleash Simms

Everton are on a dire run of form and Rafa Benitez has been not been dealt any favours when it comes to injuries at Goodison Park.

According to The Athletic, Richarlison is set to be out for a number of weeks with a calf tear after he was substituted in the second half of the defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Toffees have lost seven of their last nine Premier League matches, having won just five of their 16 matches in the division this season.

Revival

They are in desperate need of something to kickstart their revival under the Spaniard and Richarlison’s injury could open up the door for the spark they need to come in. Ellis Simms could be called up from the academy to come in and make his senior bow.

The 20-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut for Everton but his record in the youth teams and out on loan suggests that he has the potential to be a difference-maker for the Blues.

He scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 24 League One games for Blackpool last term and has scored 55 goals for the Toffees across the U18’s and U23’s, meaning he has 65 career strikes to his name at senior and youth level combined.

In the 2018/19 campaign, he scored a sensational 32 goals in 21 under-18 Premier League matches – scoring 41 times in 44 games at that age bracket overall. Since moving up to the 23’s, he has scored 17 in 37 outings – with his loan spell with the Tangerines coming last season.

Everton U23s Assistant John Ebbrell previously heaped praise on the young attacker, saying:

“What I do know with Ellis, if he ends up one-vs-one with the goalkeeper, he’s scoring.

“From experience, I know if you have time to think for that finish it can be difficult but Ellis is really calm and composed in those situations. He very rarely misses.”

His goalscoring statistics and Ebbrell’s comments on his finishing suggest that he could be able to make the grade in the first-team if he is given a chance by Benitez in the coming weeks. Richarlison’s injury could be the perfect opportunity to throw him in at the deep end to see if he is able to swim or not.

If Simms is able to come in and score goals at Premier League level then it could kickstart Everton’s revival and see them begin to move up to the part of the table where they want to be, rather than struggling in the bottom half.

Dhoni backs flexible line-up to fill Gambhir void

A little under a year ago, on the eve of the first of five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka, India received a blow with the news that Virender Sehwag had twisted his ankle at practice. Today they found out that Gautam Gambhir had aggravated a groin injury and would fly home. It was impossible not to feel the déjà vu.Gambhir’s groin injury has left India with another headache – Sehwag is already absent with a shoulder injury – but MS Dhoni put faith in the services of Rahul Dravid and the other batsmen. Part of Dhoni’s method since taking over the captaincy has been to experiment with his batting line-up. He has tried out different options at No. 3 and not always with success, but backed a flexible line-up to absorb the pressure.”Dravid is the ideal No. 3, especially in such conditions and during the evening when the ball swings and seams, so definitely he we will bat at that position,” he said. “Of course, you get conditions when there are fewer overs and higher asking rates, so then you shuffle and shift. We don’t have a fixed order: [Suresh] Raina, Rohit [Sharma], Yuvraj [Singh], myself … we have all batted at No. 3. It’s not too much of a worry.”And while admitting that Gambhir would be missed, he said that he was focused on the personnel available. “When someone is injured you can’t do anything, even though you have taken precautions in training. We hope he’s fit for the Champions Trophy. This gives someone else a chance he would not have got had Gambhir played. It’s a chance to prove yourself and that’s something we’ve done well in the past; the ability of a player to fill another’s shoes.”When asked about the void left by the loss of both openers, he was quick to point out that the most successful batsman in ODI history is still here. Dhoni’s vote for the man to partner Sachin Tendulkar was Dinesh Karthik – who he said was “doing very well in the nets” – because of his success in the role in the West Indies recently. The replacement scheduled to land in Sri Lanka is Virat Kohli, who opened in five ODIs here last year, but, as Dhoni firmly reminded everyone, he is not an opener.India have had almost a two-month gap since their last assignment, a one-day series in the West Indies they won 2-1. Since then they have had time off, conditioning camps, fitness assessments, and then the inaugural Corporate Trophy. Dhoni reckoned the players looked fit and that the break from competitive cricket would have helped.”I’d say we’re fresh, but that depends on the match result. If we win, you’d say we’re fresh but if we lose, we’re rusty. The Corporate tournament helped those who played, and I’m not worried about what people will say. We need to put in more effort than we did in the West Indies. The energy is definitely up, so is the intensity. We’ve got back-to-back games, which is challenging.”India, at No. 2 in the ICC’s ODI rankings, have done very well in Sri Lanka recently, winning their last two series, but Dhoni said the opportunity to move to No.1 was no added pressure. “We’re not worried. If we do well on the field, rankings and ratings will take care of themselves. The rankings will only come after the series. We take it game by game. Our first priority is to reach the final. Sri Lanka is a difficult place to play cricket but we have the potential and talent to do well here.”The tri-series itself is a rarity in today’s cricket calendar – India have played two in the last two years. They altered their itinerary to play back-to-back matches to accommodate an extra rest day, and there are questions about the logic of cramming in a brief series in Sri Lanka before the Champions Trophy in South Africa, where conditions will be different.Dhoni, though, was confident of India’s chances to win despite the short time-span. “In bilateral series, as they progress, you see how a player does, so subconsciously you put in plans. In a competition where there are more teams, you have to be fully prepared from the start,” he said. “You can come up with plans but on the day it gets tough. If you have a plan A, you’d better also have a plan B. We’ve not played many tri-series, it’s been mostly bilateral series. It’s not very common for us.”

Amanhã a gente define – afirmou.

Juventus looking to sell Ramsey in January

Juventus want to offload reported Everton transfer target Aaron Ramsey in January, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown

Calciomercato reported last month that a move to Goodison Park looked ‘increasingly likely’ for the 30-year-old, with the Toffees ‘ready to welcome him’. He has played a mere 97 minutes across Juventus’ first 12 Serie A matches, having suffered three minor injuries already this season.

The Welshman has racked up 262 Premier League appearances during his time with Arsenal, netting 40 goals and laying on 51 assists (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

In a tweet, Romano wrote that Juventus are ‘planning to find a solution to sell’ Ramsey at the midway point of the season.

The Wales midfielder is ‘out of the plans’ of Bianconeri coach Max Allegri and finds himself ‘looking for a potential new challenge’.

The verdict

Ramsey issued a reminder of his quality at the European Championship last summer, scoring a crucial goal against Turkey in a group stage win to help Wales progress to the round of 16. His team-mate Joe Allen said that the ‘world-class’ Ramsey had ‘answered the critics in special fashion’ with an ‘incredible’ performance that night.

However, his injury history makes for alarming reading, and even if he agreed to reduce his enormous salary by 50%, it would still mean a commitment of £200,000 per week for Everton.

It’s surely too great a risk overall for an injury-plagued footballer who’s into the latter stages of his career.

In other news, Greg O’Keeffe explains this highly-rated figure’s absence.
