'Had chance to score a triple' – Dhawan

Even as he fell for 248 with 32 deliveries left in the India A innings, Shikhar Dhawan could not help but realise he could have become the first man in the world to make a triple-century in a one-dayer

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Aug-2013As he ravaged South Africa A for 248 off 150 balls, Shikhar Dhawan knew he had achieved what only Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag had before – a double-century in limited-overs cricket by an Indian. But even as he finally fell with 32 deliveries still left in the India A innings, Dhawan could not help but realise he could have become the first man in the world to make a triple in the format.”I was aware of the record and it felt really special to score these runs,” Dhawan told . “When I got out in the 44th over it occurred to me that if I had batted till the end I had a chance to score a triple hundred. I am happy with what I scored though.”The way Dhawan went on and on, the India A coach Lalchand Rajput thought the triple was within sight. “Shikhar batted exceptionally well,” Rajput told ESPNcricinfo. “I haven’t seen a better innings in one-day cricket than this one. The way he batted today, I thought he would get 300. They were clean hits, all proper cricketing shots. He pulled, he cut, he drove. He played all shots today and it was a real treat to watch.”While Dhawan was pleased to be mentioned alongside Tendulkar and Sehwag, he was quick to dismiss comparisons between the knocks. “It did cross my mind that I joined Sachin and Viru in scoring a double-century in a one-day game,” Dhawan said. “However, those were two of the greatest innings in cricket history and they came at the international level. So, they are much bigger than my innings.”I’ve always loved watching them bat. But I love my batting as well. So, it’s difficult for me to pick one favourite knock of the three. This will remain one of my favourite matches because I scored 200 for the first time in a 50-over game. Unfortunately it didn’t come live on television but that’s fine because I loved batting.”It was a must-win game for India A if they had to meet Australia A in the final of the tri-series. Their batsmen had come up short on both occasions in tall chases against Australia A but had taken South Africa A for 309 in 38 overs in a rain-hit victory three days ago. Dhawan had made 85 in that game and said he wanted to make a larger score today.”I had scored 85 in the previous match and I wanted to score a big hundred for the team because our batsmen were all getting out in the 80s and 90s,” Dhawan said. “A big century was necessary for giving a good total to the team. Once I crossed 100, I was in a different flow. I thought I made a smart choice of shots and things went my way.”I especially enjoyed it as it came against a South African side in their own backyard. They are very tough to play at home and they play good quality cricket.”

Tilak Varma signs a short-term deal with Hampshire

He will play four County Championship matches for them in June and July

Matt Roller11-Jun-2025Tilak Varma, the young Indian batter, has signed a short-term deal with Hampshire that will see him play four County Championship matches for them in June and July.Tilak, 22, has played four ODIs and 25 T20Is for India and impressed for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, but has played only 18 first-class matches. He will look to build on a strong start to his red-ball career in England: he has already scored five first-class hundreds – including one for India A against New Zealand A – and averages 50.16 in the format.Hampshire, who were acquired by the Indian conglomerate GMR Group last year, are seventh in Division One of the County Championship after a mixed start to the season. Tilak’s arrival ahead of their game against Essex at Chelmsford on June 22 should help to bolster a batting line-up that has struggled since James Vince decided to quit red-ball cricket.Related

Hampshire had initially hoped that Dewald Brevis would be available for their two Championship fixtures at the end of June, but he will instead be with South Africa’s Test squad in Zimbabwe.Brevis and Lhuan-dre Pretorius will both miss the second half of the T20 Blast group stage after their call-ups, and Hampshire’s director of cricket Giles White said on Friday that the club was in “advanced conversations” for replacements. Tilak will not be eligible to play in the Blast, since the BCCI does not allow active Indian men’s players to feature in overseas T20 leagues.Tilak will join a handful of other Indian players in the Championship, with Ruturaj Gaikwad set to join Yorkshire for the second half of the summer and Yuzvendra Chahal due to return to Northamptonshire later this month.Hampshire are yet to announce Tilak’s signing, but his domestic team said on Wednesday: “The Hyderabad Cricket Association wishes him a great stint with Hampshire County.”

I would like to bat higher – Raina

Suresh Raina, whose unbeaten 89 in the fourth ODI against England in Mohali sealed a series win for India, has admitted that he would like the opportunity to bat further up the order. Raina has spent the majority of his 158-match ODI career coming in at Nos. 5 or 6, and it was from a position of three wickets down that he scored his 27th half-century on Wednesday.”Definitely, I would like to bat higher up the order,” he said, ahead of the fifth ODI. “If I am given a chance, I would like to give 100% as it will also give me an opportunity to play more overs. I have enjoyed batting at five, six, seven, where you need to bat till the finish.”Yuvraj Singh has occupied the No. 4 spot for India in recent years, although Raina has an impressive record batting there – albeit in just nine innings – averaging 58.85, with four fifties and his best ODI score of 116 not out. Raina has, however, been in good form in his current slot in the line-up, scoring half-centuries in each of his three innings against England so far to make him the leading run-scorer on either side.Raina, 26, also said he hoped being able to bat for longer periods and building an innings would aid his chances of returning to the Test team. Raina’s average from 17 Tests is just 28.44 and he has made six single-figure scores – including three ducks – in his last eight innings. After a year out of the side, he played in India’s two Tests against New Zealand in August, scoring 3, 55 and 0 before being dropped in favour of the returning Yuvraj. “If you talk about my Test performance, I scored a fifty in one of my last three innings,” he said. “I believe that I can make a comeback in Tests.”An impressive performance in the Irani Cup – a one-off Indian first-class match featuring the Ranji Trophy winners and a Rest of India side – which will begin on February 6, could push him back into the selectors’ thoughts ahead of the arrival of Australia later in the month. But Raina was keen not to look too far ahead and hoped to help India secure another win over England in Dharamsala.”Yes, Irani Trophy will be very important, but at this point I want to focus on doing well in tomorrow’s match,” Raina said. “Although, we have won the series, it would be nice if we can finish with a 4-1 margin.”Preventing that from happening is the priority for the tourists and Joe Root, a rare recent success story for England’s one-day team in India, said the players were pulling in the same direction and eager to finish on a high. “We’re obviously very disappointed as a team with the way the series has gone,” he said. “It has been nice for me to score some runs and put in a few performances, but it always feels better when you’re winning.”

Anthony Stuart has been sacked as coach of New South Wales after a board meeting in Sydney on Tuesday night.Stuart took over as head coach in May 2011 and his two-year contract was due to expire at the end of this season, but Cricket New South Wales has confirmed in a statement that Stuart has finished his coaching duties with the state “with immediate effect”. Chandika Hathurusingha, the former Sri Lanka Test player who was an assistant coach under Stuart, will take over as acting head coach for the rest of the 2012-13 season.Stuart has not had a particularly successful tenure since he took over from Matthew Mott last year; the Blues won only one Sheffield Shield game last summer. This season they were sitting in fourth position with two wins at the time of his departure, and in the Ryobi Cup they had managed only one victory from four games.”At a meeting of the NSW cricket board last evening it was determined that Anthony Stuart’s contract to coach the NSW SpeedBlitz Blues will not be renewed and he has finished duties as head coach with immediate effect,” Cricket New South Wales said in a statement. The chief executive David Gilbert said: “Cricket NSW records its thanks to Anthony for his efforts and commitment over the past 18 months. We wish Anthony well in his future endeavours.”Stuart, the former fast bowler who took a hat-trick in one of his three ODI appearances for Australia, had been coach of Wellington in New Zealand before he joined New South Wales.

Patel banks on New Zealand's ability to fight

Jeetan Patel, the New Zealand offspinner, has said his side can ‘fight’ and come back in the Hyderabad Test

Abhishek Purohit in Hyderabad24-Aug-2012Jeetan Patel, the New Zealand offspinner, has said his side can “fight” and come back in the Hyderabad Test despite needing another 133 runs to avoid the follow-on with all the specialist batsmen dismissed.”We have got the opportunity tomorrow,” Jeetan said. “Face the music, and fight – what we know the best. The best thing about the Kiwi cricketers is we know how to fight. We have been in a lot of situations where we had to fight. Tomorrow is a good chance for the guys to get back in.”While Jeetan was hopeful of a comeback, R Ashwin, his India counterpart, said the home side would have an eye on enforcing the follow-on if New Zealand were to get dismissed early tomorrow.”With respect to how the wicket is behaving and it being a little bit cloudy, I think we should be looking to bowl twice and get the job done,” Ashwin said. The pitch did not deteriorate much on the second day but there was a lot of bounce and some turn for the India spinners. Patel said New Zealand were expecting the pitch to behave the way it did. “I think the wicket has changed a little bit. But it’s still slow and low with the seamers. It is taking more turn, probably a little more than we expected, such as an under-prepared wicket, and we expected that.”Despite knowing that, New Zealand could not handle the Indian spinners, losing Martin Guptill to Ashwin’s first delivery and Brendon McCullum to Pragyan Ojha’s third ball. Ashwin and Ojha claimed all five New Zealand wickets to fall today. “It is disappointing. It’s as simple as that,” Jeetan said. “They bowled some good balls and we nicked them. That is what happens in cricket. It’s tough. It was always going to be a hard tour for us bowling first up on a wicket that does not help you.”Not that Jeetan did badly when he bowled. India usually target the opposition spinner, but Jeetan was difficult to get away, and ended with 4 for 100 in 41 overs. Bowling to a 6-3 on-side field right through, he restricted run-scoring opportunities, and three of his four wickets came when batsmen tried to hit out. With Daniel Vettori being New Zealand’s lead spinner, this is only Jeetan’s 14th Test since making his debut in 2006, and he spoke about making the most whenever he got the chance.”There aren’t too many opportunities when I get to play Test cricket, so when I do, I got to put my hand up. I want to contribute and get wins for us. Obviously, getting a four-for is nice but I will have to get more than that to get us over the line.”Jeetan said he had a made a few adjustments, both technical and mental, and was now enjoying his game more. “A couple of years ago, I made a couple of changes to my action and my mental approach to the game is different now. I’m trying to enjoy a lot more the moments that I play as opposed to looking at it as if it is my last moment. That sort of mental attitude has put me in the forefront of what’s happening rather than what has happened. Getting an opportunity in county cricket [for Warwickshire] was very good for me. I needed four months of just bowling as many overs as I could.”

Notts wrap up second victory

Nottinghamshire were held up by rain and further defiance from Durham’s last pair before clinching their second win from two games in the County Championship by 114 runs

15-Apr-2012
ScorecardNottinghamshire were held up by rain and further defiance from Durham’s last pair before clinching their second win from two games in the County Championship by 114 runs.Needing to take one wicket on the final day they were driven back to the pavilion by rain after just two overs. And, following a 30-minute break, No. 11 batsman Mitch Claydon proceeded to his maiden half-century to keep Durham’s slim hopes of victory alive. The Australian’s previous best for Durham was 40 out of an all-out total of 114 against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2008. Claydon was sent in below Graham Onions, who was dropped in the slips by Nottinghamshire after they claimed the extra half hour on the third evening.Resuming on 18, with the total on 203 for 9, Claydon took 10 off Andy Carter’s opening over today. The visitors persisted with Carter even though Claydon kept clattering him to the boundary.Andre Adams was also unable to grab the scalp he wanted to complete a five-wicket haul and eventually made way for the left-arm spin of Samit Patel. There were eight fours in Claydon’s 53-ball half-century, but after 50 runs had been added he was caught at long-on by Luke Fletcher off Patel for 55.

Karachi rout Sheikhupura to win ODTA Final

Karachi City Cricket Association overcame Sheikhupura by a comprehensive margin of 79 runs to win the final of the One-day tournament (Associations), played at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.Sheikhupura, who went into the final as favourites to lift the trophy after winning all of their 6 matches, including the semi-final against Rawalpindi, went down in the match perhaps a bit to easily, despite Qaiser Abbas’ magnificent effort with the bat. With virtually no help coming from the other end, the left-hander only watched his side failing to reach even 200 runs, after being asked to score 279, with the scoreboard showing 106 not out off 134 balls against his name.It all started when Tanvir Ahmed, the right-arm pace man, bowled Imran Nazir on the very first ball of the innings and his fellow opener Mohammad Javed was caught behind the wicket off Imran Javed in the next over, reducing Sheikhupura to 5 for 2. The rot thus set in reached its climax when they lost the six wickets for 84 in the 19th over.Qaiser, awarded best batsman of the final, added 34 for the 7th wicket with skipper Aaqib Javed and then went on to add another 63 for the 9th wicket with Kashif Raza (24 off 23 balls), an association during which the left-hander reached his hundred off 126 balls.Yet all went in vain as their last man Farrukh Majeed holed out a simple catch to mid on off the bowling of Adnan Malik, with the scoreboard showing 199 runs in the 46th over. Adnan, the left-arm spinner, was declared the best bowler of the final after his figures of 3 for 48.Tanvir Ahmed, Imran Javed and Tabish Nawab also bowled well for their side, getting two wickets each for 23, 46 and 32 respectively. Shahid Afridi got one wicket for 39 in his ten overs.Earlier, Karachi, led by Moin Khan in Shadab Kabir’s absence, won the toss and elected to bat first on a wicket completely devoid of grass. However, Sheikhupura pace attack, led by Aaqib and Kashif Raza bowled brilliantly to reduce them to 12 for 2 by the 5th over, after both Shahid Afridi and Zafar Jadoon threw their wickets away in an attempt to find quick runs.It was at this juncture that Naumanullah (74 off 96) and Saeed Bin Nasir (49 off 79) joined hands to rescue their side from this vulnerable position. They added 99 for the 3rd wicket to provide a firm foundation for the late order to find some quick runs in the end. This task was duly taken over by Moin Khan and Arif Mahmood. These two perfectly made for a somewhat tardy start of the innings by executing lusty hits to all parts of the ground, adding 75 in the last 7 overs of which 49 came off the last three.Moin Khan, who had relied mainly on singles and doubles at the start of his innings, hit 3 fours and 2 sixes to score an unbeaten 67 off 63 balls. Arif, on the other hand, hit five boundaries and a six in his 23-ball innings of 43 not out.For Sheikhupura, Farrukh Majeed bagged two wickets at the cost of 58 runs, whereas Aaqib Javed, Kashif Raza and Faisal Virk got one wicket each.

I hope to take over from Sangakkara – Chandimal

He was talked up as one of Sri Lanka’s future stars even before his debut. He made two centuries in his first six ODIs, including one at Lord’s. Life could not have got better for Dinesh Chandimal at 21. It didn’t, and came crashing down suddenly. He was dropped after only three indifferent outings in the home ODI series against Australia and is now looking at the Champions League Twenty20 qualifier as a potential launching pad for a national comeback.”This tournament is definitely very important for me,” Chandimal said in Hyderabad. “It could help me make the Sri Lankan side more regularly.”His shy smile didn’t disappear, but there was hurt in his eyes when the word ‘dropped’ was mentioned. Twenty-one is not an age when a cricketer becomes adept at diplomacy or eloquence, but Chandimal was. “That’s the selectors’ call,” he said. “I can only focus on my game and can’t do much otherwise.”It wasn’t the low scores but the manner of his dismissals against Australia that was worrying. On all three occasions, he chased and edged deliveries outside the off stump. What went wrong? “You see, my normal position is No. 3 but I came in at No. 5 [twice] against Australia. But I know that I have the potential. I am ready to play for my country at any position whenever I am selected.”Chandimal has been a wicketkeeper from the beginning, but his batting is so highly rated that he has played a majority of the games in his short international career as a specialist batsman. It is as a keeper, though, that he wants to leave a mark. “I have kept wicket all through my career, right from school level through age-group cricket. I like playing as a keeper-batsman. Keeping is good for my batting as well, as I get to observe from up close how the pitch is behaving.”I hope to take over from Sanga [Kumar Sangakkara] one day. At the moment, Prasanna Jayawardene is doing very well in Tests, but I would like to keep wicket in Tests as well in the future.”Despite having a first-class average of 58.52, Chandimal’s eagerness to keep wicket could mean that he will have to wait for that Test call-up till a vacancy arises behind the stumps. Lahiru Thirimanne, another promising batsman – one who does not keep wicket – was blooded ahead of Chandimal during the Tests against England. Chandimal is prepared to wait. “I expected to be picked for the Australia Tests, but I have a lot of years ahead of me and my time will come.”
