Shamar Joseph cleared of toe fracture after Starc blow

It remains to be seen whether the young quick can play a role on the fourth day in Brisbane

Andrew McGlashan27-Jan-2024Shamar Joseph has been cleared of a fracture to his toe after retiring hurt following a blow from a Mitchell Starc yorker, raising the prospect that he could yet play a part on the fourth day at the Gabba as West Indies aim to defend 216 for a famous victory.Starc speared the delivery into Joseph’s boot and it was initially given lbw before the third umpire called a no-ball, but by then Joseph was already on the ground in pain. He quickly took off his shoe and sock as the physio came out and it was soon decided he couldn’t continue and was helped off the field. His retirement brought an end to West Indies’ second innings. After initially being iced in the dressing room, it was later confirmed he would be heading for scans and they brought good news later in the evening.Related

Roach on bail drama: 'Would have been a different game'

Rocky start to post-Warner era for Australia's top order

“He will continue to be monitored by the medical team and assessed tomorrow,” a statement posted on X said.Shamar Joseph’s injury had left West Indies with just two frontline quicks, Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph, supplemented by allrounder Justin Greaves and the offspin of Kevin Sinclair as they tried to earn a first victory in Australia since 1997 in what would go down as one of the biggest upsets of all time. By the close they removed Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne to keep their hopes alive although Steven Smith was looking solid.Alazarri Joseph said they were all wishing for the best for Shamar, but had to focus on the task at hand and retained belief they could secure victory.”At the end of the day the game has to go on and we have a job to do. Can’t worry about who’s not there,” he said. “Think we bowled pretty well. It’s just for us to come tomorrow and keep pegging away. We still have eight wickets to get, you never know what could happen on the fourth day. As long as we bowl the ball in the right areas we can still win this game.””I like the fight the boys have put in with bat and ball,” he added. “We’ll take quite a bit of confidence from this series but the game isn’t done yet so there could be more.”Shamar Joseph became an overnight sensation on his Test debut when he claimed Steven Smith with his first ball in Adelaide and went on to finish with 5 for 94. He also impressed with the bat at No. 11, making 36 in his first innings. In Brisbane, he removed Alex Carey in the first innings as West Indies threatened to secure a big lead before Australia drew nearly level before declaring.

Andries Gous available to play for USA in the T20 World Cup

Andries Gous, the South African wicketkeeper who holds the highest individual score of the 2024 ILT20 season, has declared himself available to play for co-hosts USA in the T20 World Cup in June.Gous, 30, represented South Africa’s Under-19s in 2013 and played domestically for Free State and the Knights. In 2021, he relocated to the USA with his family after signing a long-term deal with American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), the company which runs Major League Cricket, and is due to qualify for the national team in April. The USA have not played a men’s T20I since the 2022 World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, but have qualified for June’s World Cup automatically as co-hosts with West Indies. They have been placed in Group A alongside India, Pakistan, Ireland and Canada, against whom they will play the opening match on June 1 in Dallas.”If that opportunity arises, it’s always been a dream of mine to play international cricket, firstly, and secondly, to play at a World Cup,” Gous told MLC Network. “I think that’s every cricketer’s dream, to play at a World Cup: really testing yourself against the best in the world.”Just seeing the pool that USA is in, you’re definitely going to be testing yourself against the best in the world. It will be really awesome to play for USA, if we get the chance. We’ve still got to first make the side, but if the opportunity arises, it’s something that I’ll definitely take with both hands.”Gous represented Washington Freedom in the inaugural season of Major League Cricket and has also earned opportunities with Morrisville Samp Army, who play in the Abu Dhabi T10, and now with Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20. He hit a match-winning 95 not out off 50 balls on debut against Desert Vipers on Sunday.Corey Anderson, the former New Zealand international, also relocated to the USA and will be eligible to feature in the T20 World Cup. While playing for Hobart Hurricanes last month, he told the Tasmanian newspaper: “If the opportunity comes up, I’ll assess it. But I’m not focused on that at the moment.”

Shakib boost for Bangladesh in spin-friendly Chattogram against buoyant Sri Lanka

Big picture – Chattogram won’t be like Sylhet at all

For the second Test series in a row between these teams, Sri Lanka’s seamers are defining the contest. In 2022, it had been Asitha Fernando and Kasun Rajitha who claimed 24 wickets between them in the two-match series in Bangladesh. This time, Sri Lanka go to Chattogram with their quicks having taken all 20 wickets in Sylhet – the first time a Sri Lanka pace attack has achieved this since 1986.Beyond the big win in Sylhet, Sri Lanka’s having found a lower-middle-order batter who has found immediate success at the top level – Kamindu Mendis – will buoy them further. It seems unlikely, however, that the pitch in Chattogram will much resemble the moist seam-conducive surface that Sri Lanka stomped to a four-day victory on. Pitches in Chattogram tend to be much better for batting, and it is the spinners who tend to prosper there. On that front, Bangladesh will feel they have Sri Lanka covered.Related

  • Shakib returns for second Test against Sri Lanka

  • Dhananjaya pleased with three-pacers' plan paying off

  • Bangladesh's Test credentials in question, again

The return of Shakib Al Hasan from the eye complaint that saw him unavailable for the tour so far will give them the most confidence. Not only is Shakib among their best batters, he is also vastly experienced as a bowler on the Chattogram deck, having claimed 64 wickets across 19 Tests there – by a distance the most for any bowler at this venue. With him are Taijul Islam, who has the second-highest Chattogram wicket tally of 47, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who is third with 34.Sri Lanka’s main spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, meanwhile, will be playing only his fourth Test overseas, and has four career wickets away from home. Offspin-bowling allrounder Ramesh Mendis, who is the likeliest to come in to the XI if Sri Lanka opt for a second frontline spin option, is even more inexperienced overseas, having played just two away from home.Sri Lanka have never lost a Test in Bangladesh, and such was the margin of victory in Sylhet that they will begin the second Test with some confidence. Bangladesh will think of the game in Sylhet as something of an aberration, however. In Chattogram, with Shakib in their ranks, they will feel – and be, possibly – a different team entirely.

In the spotlight – Shakib Al Hasan and Kamindu Mendis

Shakib Al Hasan turns heads wherever he goes of course, but the freshly elected member of parliament from the Magura constituency might be especially worth keeping a close eye on in this match. It’s not only his first international as an MP, it’s also his first game against Sri Lanka since he had appealed for – and earned – a timed-out dismissal against Angelo Mathews in the ODI World Cup. Mathews slammed Shakib and Bangladesh for making that appeal, and echoes of the anger it caused at the time were present through the course of the limited-overs series. If Shakib sees value in pushing Sri Lanka’s buttons again, it seems unlikely that his new status in Bangladesh’s legislature will stop him from stirring more controversy.Three Test innings into his career, Kamindu Mendis has scores of 64, 102, and 164. Though he burst into the international cricket consciousness as a fingerspinner who could operate with either arm, his batting has always been his primary suit. And since he debuted for Sri Lanka in 2018, he has clearly taken his batting up several levels, improving his ability to deal with the moving ball in particular, a skill that served him nicely on the spicy deck in Sylhet. There will be greater tests in store for him, as oppositions study his game and design strategies to exploit his weaknesses. But he seems set now to keep that spot in the lower-middle order during what is a relatively busy Test year.

Pitch and conditions

Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium has Bangladesh’s best batting pitch. Batting first, sides have averaged 380 in the last five Tests here. The weather is likely to be warm, with the odd chance of a shower on days one and five.Asitha Fernando should get into the Sri Lanka XI in place of Kasun Rajitha•AFP/Getty Images

Team news

Shakib will likely displace Shahadat Hossain in Bangladesh’s XI. Nahid Rana’s pace is exciting but whether he will be effective on Chattogram’s generally placid surface is a question Bangladesh will consider. Hasan Mahmud could be an option for them.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Mahmudul Hasan Joy, 2 Zakir Hasan, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), 4 Mominul Haque, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Litton Das (wk), 7 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 8 Taijul Islam, 9 Shoriful Islam, 10 Khaled Ahmed, 11 Nahid Rana/Hasan MahmudWith Rajitha out with a back injury, Sri Lanka will likely bring Asitha straight into the XI, partnering him with left-arm quick Vishwa Fernando. If one of the seamers from Sylhet has to miss out, Lahiru Kumara is the likeliest to be omitted in favour of another spinner.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Dimuth Karuanaratne, 2 Nishan Madushka, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva (capt), 7 Kamindu Mendis, 8 Ramesh Mendis, 9 Prabath Jayasuriya, 10 Asitha Fernando, 11 Vishwa Fernando

Stats and trivia

  • The three most recent Tests between these teams in Chattogram have all ended in draws
  • Asitha claimed 13 wickets at an average of 16.61 on his last trip to Bangladesh, though his figures in Chattogram were 3 for 72
  • Following his 87 not out on day four of the first Test, Mominul Haque needs 25 to complete 4000 career Test runs. He will be the fourth Bangladesh batter to the milestone – behind Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib – if and when he gets there

Quotes – everyone’s talking about Shakib

“It looks like he has lost weight. He’s been training. He has had a good BPL. He’s had a good start to the Dhaka Premier League. He’s happy and that’s the only place we want Shakib. We want him happy.”
“Why should I talk about him? He’s not in my team.”

'Much better if he did another job' – Hasaranga slams umpire over non-no-ball call

Umpire Lyndon Hannibal not penalising Wafadar Momand’s high full toss to Kamindu Mendis did not go well with Sri Lanka’s captain

Andrew Fidel Fernando22-Feb-2024Sri Lanka’s T20I captain Wanindu Hasaranga has said outright that umpire Lyndon Hannibal should find another job, after Hannibal had deemed a high full toss as a legal delivery during a tense final over in the third T20I against Afghanistan in Dambulla.Hasaranga’s scathing comments came after Hannibal, the square-leg umpire, did not call a no-ball when a Wafadar Momand delivery passed batter Kamindu Mendis well above waist height without pitching. Kamindu had shuffled down the pitch, but the delivery nevertheless would have likely arrived higher than his waist had he been standing upright at the popping crease. This would constitute a no-ball as per the ICC’s playing conditions.Still, Hasaranga was extraordinarily critical, though he did not refer to Hannibal by name.”That kind of thing shouldn’t happen in an international match,” Hasaranga said of the incident. “If it had been close [to waist height], that’s not a problem. But a ball that’s going so high… it would have hit the batsman’s head if it had gone a little higher.Related

Gurbaz, spinners give Afghanistan winning end to tough tour

“If you can’t see that, that umpire isn’t suited to international cricket. It would be much better if he did another job.”Sri Lanka needed 11 runs off the last three balls when this occurred. As the delivery was deemed legal, and Kamindu made no contact with the full toss, they ended up needing 11 off the last two. After the umpires deemed it a fair delivery, Kamindu was seen asking for the no-ball, and is understood to have also requested a review. However, the current ICC playing conditions do not allow player reviews for umpire decisions that do not involve potential dismissals. In fact, umpires themselves cannot initiate third-umpire reviews on no-balls, unless there is a dismissal at stake.”There was a situation where you could review those calls before, but the ICC has got rid of that,” Hasaranga said. “Our batsmen tried to review that. If the third umpire is able to check the front-foot no-ball, he should check this kind of no-ball as well. There’s no reason why they can’t. They didn’t do even that, so I’m not sure what was going on in his (the square-leg umpire’s) mind at the time.”The ICC’s playing conditions define this kind of no-ball as: “Any delivery, which passes or would have passed, without pitching, above waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease…”Sri Lanka went on to lose the match by three runs to give Afghanistan their only victory of the tour, although the hosts won the series 2-1.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter will not be raising the bid if Atalanta refuse it, causing concerns that the attacker could miss out on his preferred transfer. The Nigerian's entourage has been working behind the scenes to convince Atalanta to let him go and the latest developments, according to , suggest Atalanta may be willing to settle for €48m (£38m/$55m).

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lookman joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022 and was a vital cog in Gian Piero Gasperini's Europa League-winning side in 2024. However, as the summer window arrived, numerous clubs started to show interest and he made clear that he wants to leave, as chief executive Luca Percassi confirmed on Wednesday.

  • WHAT LOOKMAN'S AGENT SAID

Percassi said: "Lookman has been expressing his desire to leave for some time. It's no secret. In all our discussions, he was a player who should have left this summer, following our club's philosophy of one sale per year. But the transfer market always brings unexpected things, you know well what happened with Mateo Retegui. For Lookman, despite so much interest, there had never been anything concrete until yesterday when the first official proposal arrived. Inter is a very friendly company, I saw [president Beppe] Marotta yesterday. We have a great friendship and professional relationship. In these days, we will evaluate with great serenity the offer we have received, and then give an answer. I can only say that the timing and exit values of the Atalanta players are decided only by the club."

Evangelos Marinakis ‘polarises opinion’ but Nottingham Forest legend Stuart Pearce explains why you ‘can’t knock’ larger-than-life Reds owner after bold ‘we always win’ Morgan Gibbs-White statement

Stuart Pearce admits Evangelos Marinakis “polarises opinion”, but the Nottingham Forest legend says you “can’t knock” the Reds’ enigmatic owner.

Greek shipping magnate Marinakis completed a takeover at the City Ground in 2017. Big plans were drawn up at that stage, but it took five years for Steve Cooper to deliver on an ambitious remit and return Premier League football to Trentside.

Marinakis has made his mark on the English top-flight since then, with elaborate recruitment drives, emotional online statements, banning of certain pundits, marches onto the pitch and threats of legal action against rivals seeing him make plenty of headlines.

WHAT PEARCE SAID

The 57-year-old, who also owns Olympiakos and Rio Ave, has become box office in his own right. Forest icon Pearce, speaking in association with the online casino Casino.org, told GOAL when asked for his opinion on Marinakis: “He’s come to the club, put his money into the club, he’s larger than life in regard to how he is and what he is.

“To be fair, the proof is in the pudding. Where Forest are at the moment, in Europe, the fact that he has got them promoted under his tenureship, I think he is doing a lot right. He polarises opinion a little bit in some of the things he does, but there is a real passion for the club to do well. He wants to drive it. You can’t knock it.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Marinakis has attracted criticism from some, but could be considered the model owner in many ways – with it impossible to question his commitment of passion and funding to the Forest cause. Pearce added: “I think the big thing is some of the things we don’t see, behind the scenes, what’s the relationship with the manager like on a daily basis, and various other bits and pieces. Are they enjoying working for him? All of those things go into the mix as well. That is something we won’t be privy to.

“Forest are looking as strong as they have been for a number of years, which is an understatement – you are going back 20-30 years now for the last time we were in Europe. The proof is in the pudding, he’s put his money into the football club, they have got a wealth of talent on the playing list and the fans are making that football club bounce at the moment – with the home games being sold out. I think that is more of an indicator as to how he’s doing.”

Marizanne Kapp's absence did not affect South Africa, says Klaas

Australia’s Darcie Brown, who got 5 for 21, felt day two could be “interesting”, given it was “a bowler-friendly wicket”

The heartbreak of being without superstar Marizanne Kapp did not derail South Africa’s confidence and focus, said debutant quick Masabata Klaas after the tourists endured a torrid initiation to Test cricket against Australia at the WACA.South Africa’s hopes of a major upset in their first Test against Australia were rocked when Kapp was ruled out due to illness. She had been absent from training in the lead-up to the match, but was expected to play. The South Africa camp had hoped she could pull through on match day, but she did not feel well enough. “We only found out when we had to play that she’s not going to play,” Klaas told reporters after day one of the Test. After being sent in to bat, South Africa’s batting wilted against sustained pressure from Australia’s quicks, who bowled a disciplined line outside off stump that had batters perishing to loose shots. Without the mighty presence of Kapp, South Africa lost eight wickets in a humiliating first session before being routed for just 76 in their lowest ever Test score in an innings that lasted 31.2 overs.”I don’t think so,” Klaas said when asked if South Africa were rattled in the wake of Kapp’s absence. “We’re confident enough and have a strong batting line-up, so I won’t say that her not being here affected the team.”While it was a difficult day for South Africa, Klaas was a shining light on her debut as she ripped open Australia’s top order by dismissing Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry and Tahlia McGrath cheaply. Her performance earned praise from Kapp, who also voiced on social media her lament that South Africa did not select young quick Eliz-mari Marx.

Learning from the success of Australia’s quicks, Klaas continued the strong form she had showed during the white-ball series, where South Africa enjoyed historic first victories over Australia in the T20I and ODI formats.”I watched the Australian bowlers, and I saw that there was something on this pitch. So I said to myself, ‘I’m gonna make use of it’,” she said. “So I went out there with a positive mindset of hitting my line and lengths, so that worked for me.”Despite Klaas’ heroics, South Africa started wilting in oppressive conditions as they went through the motions in the back end of the day’s play. But the late wickets of Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy, who fell in the penultimate over before stumps for 99, has given South Africa faint hope of igniting a comeback.Related

Healy's 99, Brown's five wickets headline Australia's dominance

“Her [Healy’s] wicket was a game-changer, but we have to come back… we still have another five wickets to take tomorrow,” Klaas said. “The more you are in, the easier it is [to bat]. [The batters need to] stay longer at the pitch.”Brown: Anything can happen on ‘bowler-friendly wicket’Boasting a lead of 175 runs with five wickets in hand, Australia are in firm control, and there is the prospect of the match lasting just two days in what would be an anti-climax after the absorbing white-ball series.”I think it should be a really interesting day tomorrow,” quick Darcie Brown, who took 5 for 21, said. “It’s a bowler-friendly wicket, so anything can happen.”Brown was the standout with her first five-wicket haul in Test cricket, and her fiery bowling was tailor made for a green-tinged surface that fittingly offered plenty for the quicks in Test cricket’s return to the WACA. She was also constantly armed with a packed slips cordon to rekindle images of lore on the famous ground.”I had a moment where I was like ‘This is so cool’ just looking at all the slips,” Brown said. “I’ve never bowled with a seven-two [field]… only two on the leg side. It was an amazing moment.”

'Can't keep making the same mistakes,' says van der Dussen

“We can maybe be just a bit braver,” stand-in T20I captain van der Dussen says after the 3-0 defeat to West Indies

Firdose Moonda27-May-2024

Quinton de Kock’s form is a major worry for South Africa•Associated Press

South Africa were “taught a lesson in how to play in Caribbean conditions” in the opinion of stand-in T20I captain Rassie van der Dussen, who oversaw a 3-0 sweep at the hands of West Indies.Van der Dussen, who is not part of South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad despite being the second-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket in 2024, stood in for Aiden Markram, as captain and No. 4 batter, with disappointing results. South Africa slumped to a second successive T20I series defeat to West Indies. They have not won a T20I series out of the four they have played under white-ball coach Rob Walter and kept “making the same mistakes,” van der Dussen said.He identified South Africa’s batting, especially upfront, as too circumspect. “From a batting front, we can maybe be just a bit braver,” he said. “We saw the way that the West Indies play, especially in the powerplay. They really take it on. When the ball’s new, it’s easier to score. It gets tough towards the back end when the ball gets soft.”Related

T20 World Cup 2024 FAQs: Timings, venues and more

Markram not a typical SA captain (and that's a good thing)

Batting first, West Indies put on scores of 64 for 1 and 51 for 1 in the powerplays in the first two games, and chasing 164 in the final game on Sunday, they raced to 83 without loss in that period. South Africa were 46 for 3 and 85 for 2 chasing (the latter their highest powerplay score) and 45 for 2 batting first. The obvious difference is the number of wickets lost among a top order that will need to do duty at the T20 World Cup. Both Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock enjoyed some individual success – Hendricks with his 51-ball 87 in the first game and de Kock with a 17-ball 41 in the second – but their partnership only succeeded once and Ryan Rickelton, the No. 3, was unable to get past 20.Van der Dussen put some of that down to exhaustion and some to taking longer than they should to assess conditions, but remained harsh in his assessment. “We just couldn’t adapt early enough. We had a long week in terms of layovers in Miami and so forth. We saw that in the first match, but you can’t keep making the same mistakes.”The middle order didn’t fare much better – van der Dussen was the only batter of those carded No. 4 to 7 to get two scores in double-figures – but they will be entirely replaced by Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs, which should boost South Africa’s power-hitting.The problem? None of them were in the IPL 2024’s top-ten run-scorers’ list and all were inconsistent to varying degrees at the tournament.Klaasen started the IPL well but fell away in the middle period, though he did score a half-century in the second qualifier; Markram and Miller only scored one fifty each in 11 innings and nine innings respectively; Stubbs, the best of the lot, scored three fifties and showed off good finishing skills in his time in India.Van der Dussen was hopeful that their return to the national side will boost the scoring rate. “The guys are very experienced. Many of them have played CPL a few times,” he said. “We don’t know what conditions we’re going to get in the USA but the middle order is made up of very experienced, world-class players.”Anrich Nortje has had a poor time of it, both at the IPL and in the Caribbean•Getty Images

Anrich Nortje’s form remains a concernMatters appear more worrying on the bowling front, where van der Dussen said West Indies “just out-skilled us” as South Africa “tried a few different things but nothing seemed to work”. The biggest concern is Anrich Nortje, who went wicketless in the two matches he played and continued to concede runs heavily – as he did at the IPL – but there may also be some furrowed brows over the fitness of Ottneil Baartman. He bowled his full quota of four overs in the first match but picked up a lower limb strain and did not play the next two games. Baartman offers more variations than anyone else in the South African squad, especially as Lungi Ngidi is only part of the reserves, and his availability for the tournament could be crucial to their chances.South Africa were without Kagiso Rabada, who was recovering from a soft tissue infection, for this series and Tabraiz Shamsi, who travelled with the squad but did not play a game because of a lower limb injury. Bjorn Fortuin operated as the first-choice spinner and was fairly economical but only picked up one wicket. It could even be argued that he was outshone by newcomer Nqaba Peter, the legspinner, who is not part of the T20 World Cup squad but is a prospect for the future. Asked to identify some positives, Peter was immediately on van der Dussen’s mind. “Youngster Nqaba Peter made his debut and looks like he’s been playing for a few years already,” he said. “And Bjorn Fortuin bowled well at stages. So there’s some glimpses here and there, which we’ve got to look for. But I think overall we were just short of the mark by quite a long way this week.”South Africa have one more opportunity to fine tune. They will play a warm-up match against a yet-to-be-confirmed opposition in Florida on Wednesday before their tournament begins against Sri Lanka in a week’s time.
