Watch out Mount: Man Utd's "incredible" talent can steal the no.7 shirt

Mason Mount arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 2023, with eyebrows being raised over the Red Devils forking out a fee in the region of £60m for his signature.

The Englishman left boyhood club, Chelsea, to move to Old Trafford, but his time in the North West has failed to live up to his mammoth price tag.

He’s only made a total of 54 appearances across all competitions, scoring just five times, with his latest effort coming against Sunderland in the Premier League.

However, injuries have massively plagued the 26-year-old in recent years, subsequently failing to register over 20 appearances in the league in any of his two full seasons in Manchester.

It’s unclear what levels he can reach at the Theatre of Dreams, but part of his struggles in previous seasons could be down to the pressure generated from the number seven shirt.

Ranking United’s best #7 in the Premier League era

Over the last few years, the number seven shirt at United has been somewhat of a curse, with numerous players struggling to match the expectations it comes with.

The likes of Ángel Di María, Michael Owen and Alexis Sanchez have all been unable to impress when wearing the number on their back – but that hasn’t always been the case.

Eric Cantona was an iconic figure at Old Trafford, but that came in more ways than just his performances with the ball, with numerous talking points emerging from his spell at the Red Devils.

The Frenchman became known for his infamous king-fu kick on a supporter, leading to a hefty ban, but he still managed to rack up some incredible numbers during his seven-year spell.

He scored 82 times in his 185 appearances in Manchester, arguably being one of the best players to ever wear the number seven shirt for the Red Devils.

However, he wasn’t quite able to reach the levels produced by Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Portuguese international exceeding everyone’s expectations at United.

He arrived as an unknown quantity to many supporters in 2003, but he would go on to rack up over 340 appearances across two separate spells at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo even won a Ballon d’Or during his first stint at the club, highlighting the quality he possesses and even becoming known as CR7 as a result of his spell in Manchester.

However, arguably the most iconic player to wear such a shirt at the Theatre of Dreams is David Beckham, with the Englishman being constantly associated with such a shirt throughout his career.

A product of the club’s academy, the midfielder made himself more than just a footballer, with Beckham now being a household celebrity around the entire globe.

From halfway line strikes to incredible free-kicks, he truly did manage to produce everything for the Red Devils, with a real hope that one other star can replicate such a feat in the future.

The United star who could take the #7 shirt off Mount

The United hierarchy backed manager Ruben Amorim during the summer transfer market to try and aid his chance of success in 2025/26 and beyond.

The 40-year-old spent over £200m on new additions within the final third to try and offer a new and impressive attacking department to his first-team squad.

Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko all arrived at Old Trafford, but none of them took the iconic number seven shirt away from Mount.

However, whilst the Englishman still wears such a shirt, that could be about to change in the years ahead with the emergence of academy star Shea Lacey.

At 18, the forward has a huge future ahead of him, but he’s already shown glimpses of his quality within the youth levels of the Red Devils in the last few seasons.

He made 13 appearances across all competitions last campaign, netting just twice, but he’s already matched such a tally in his first three outings of 2025/26.

Lacey, who’s been labelled “incredible” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is a left-footed forward who favours cutting off the right side onto his stronger foot – a really impressive quality that could make him a huge threat.

He’s also demonstrated his ball-carrying skills in the past, making the step-up to action after his previous injury lay-off – possessing the fearlessness that United have often lacked in the final third.

The winger’s highlights from recent months showcase the natural raw ability he has in his arsenal, but it’s crucial that he’s managed in the right way to reach his full potential.

Young academy prospects have made themselves at home in the United first-team of late, but given the recent struggles on the pitch, it’s important Lacey is catapulted into the limelight at the right time.

However, he does have all the tools to thrive in England’s top-flight in the years ahead, with the youngster potentially having all the tools to take the number seven off Mount’s back.

Tottenham now showing real interest in £26m maestro with "striker-like finishing"

Tottenham Hotspur are now showing real interest in signing a “relentless” new midfielder who has “striker-like finishing”, with a number of Europe’s top clubs keen.

Spurs looking to strengthen in midfield

Tottenham have made a patchy start to life under Thomas Frank, most recently drawing 0-0 away at AS Monaco in the Champions League, and they could have lost if not for the performance of Guglielmo Vicario, who received a SofaScore match rating of 10 for his efforts.

The Lilywhites recorded an xG of just 0.88, as a result of only creating one big chance throughout the match, with Lucas Bergvall failing to make an impact, being substituted on the hour mark after failing to complete a single dribble or get a shot away.

Given that Rodrigo Bentancur also has just one goal and no assists to his name in all competitions this term, it wouldn’t be surprising if Frank were to try and bring in a new creative spark, and a new midfielder has now emerged as a target.

That is according to a report from The Boot Room, which states Tottenham are now showing real interest in signing AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, having sent scouts to watch him in action for the Eredivisie side last weekend.

At the end of August, it was revealed the Dutch club are looking to hold out for up to €30m (£26m) for Smit, but the price tag could feasibly be driven up amid widespread interest, with the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea also keen.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey adds: “Talking to scouts in Europe, there are not many more names that create as much excitement as Smit.

Thomas Frank names the Tottenham player scoring for fun in training lately

The Spurs boss is very impressed.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 22, 2025

“Many clubs believe Smit is the real deal and from what I am being told there is a very good chance he moves next year.”

"Relentess" Smit could be real attacking threat for Spurs

Scout Ben Mattinson has waxed lyrical about the threat the Dutchman poses going forward, saying: “For a midfielder, Kees Smit has striker-like finishing in the box. The quality and consistency of his finishing is top drawer. He attacks the box throughout games and gets into some dangerous areas to score from midfield.”

Mattinson has also praised the 19-year-old for his engine and ability in possession of the ball, describing him as “relentless” earlier this year.

Despite still being a teenager, the Alkmaar maestro has already established himself as a regular starter for the Dutch club, chipping in with one goal and two assists in the Eredivisie so far this season.

As such, Smit could be a fantastic long-term addition to Frank’s squad, but it would be a gamble, given that he is yet to prove himself in one of Europe’s major leagues.

Brewers Star Pays Tribute to Bob Uecker By Hitting Two Home Runs With Custom Bat

Christian Yelich is using a custom Bob Uecker bat for the Brewers' MLB Players Weekend series against the Reds. On Friday night, Yelich and the bat did Uecker proud going 4 for 5 at the plate with two home runs as Milwaukee won their 13th consecutive game, tying the longest winning streak in franchise history.

Milwaukee also came back from a seven-run deficit in the game thanks in no small part of the work of Yelich and that special bat.

Yelich hit a home run to lead off the second inning and tie the game at 1-1. After the Reds scored seven runs in the 2nd inning, Yelich doubled in a run in his second at-bat and then drove in another with a single in the 4th. By the time he came back to the plate in the 6th the game was tied and he only needed a triple for the cycle.

Instead he hit another home run.

The former MVP also paid tribute to Uecker with his outfit on opening day. The legendary Brewers announcer passed away in January.

What a night for a number of reasons.

New York Radio Host Goes Off On ‘Mad Dog’ Russo After Rant About Mets Broadcaster

Pete Alonso became the Mets' all-time leader in home runs earlier this week as part of an offensive explosion so big the team ran out of fireworks. When Alonso passed Daryl Strawberry it was a nice moment for a team in the middle of a very rough patch and SNY's play-by-play voice, Gary Cohen, responded with an enthusiastic call to mark the occasion.

One person who didn't appreciate the call was Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, who went on the next morning to rant about the Mets celebrating the accomplishment. Near the end of his rant he also called out Cohen for his nickname-centric call saying, "I love Gary, I hate to do that. ‘Polar Bear on an iceberg?’ I mean, really now? This is not Henry Aaron against Al Downing!”

Unsurprisingly, there was at least one person who then took issue with Russo's rant. That would be ESPN New York's Don La Greca who went on his show later in the day to explain that the call wasn't for Mad Dog.

"Dude, this is a Met moment," said La Greca. "If you're a Yankee fan or Chris Russo, a Giant fan, a Red Sox fan, don't care about baseball. What do you care to have an opinion? It was for the Mets fans. It's a Met broadcast by a Met announcer who grew up a Met fan talking about a Met record. He's playing it to the room."

"You're not involved! You weren't invited," La Greca continued. "I don't understand why you should even care. I don't need to hear a San Francisco Giant fan peeing all over it. It's disrespectful to Gary. It's disrespectful to Met fans. Chris, I love ya. I don't care what you think. I don't! Your opinion doesn't count because you're not part of the club that that call was for. That call was for Mets fans. Watching the game. Living and dying with the team. Not a guy that's a San Francisco Giant fan that doesn't get it. Of course you don't get it because you don't know because you're not a Met fan."

As far as media feuds go, this one features a lot of players. You've got ESPN, ESPN Radio, SiriusXM, SNY, First Take, Peter Schraeger giggling. Pretty much everybody and everything.

Walker Buehler to Join National League Contender After Release From Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox parted ways with veteran right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler last week, but it didn't take long for him to find a new home in MLB.

Buehler is reportedly finalizing a deal to join the Philadelphia Phillies, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Passan notes that Buehler will be eligible to pitch for the Phillies in the postseason.

Buehler, 31, struggled across 23 appearances in his lone season with the Red Sox. He made 22 starts and owned a 5.45 ERA with 84 strikeouts and 55 walks across 112 1/3 innings. The two-time All-Star hasn't been the same since he missed a full season in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but the Phils are hopeful he can make an impact in October.

The move comes a few days after Zach Wheeler was placed on the 60-day IL and ruled out for the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome.

Philadelphia currently holds a 6 1/2 game lead over the New York Mets in the NL East, and their .581 winning percentage is second best in all of MLB.

Should Big Bash finally ask whether less is more?

The tournament has suffered some growing pains having become the most sought-after domestic league in Australia

Daniel Brettig10-Feb-2020Just as they had for the first edition of the tournament in 2011, the Sydney Sixers lifted the Big Bash League’s neon-lit trophy as champions, at the end of a final that was rain-truncated but near miraculous for having happened at all.The trophy, and the identities of some of the Sixers holding it up – Steven Smith and Moises Henriques to name two – were just about the only unchanged thing about the victory scene, as the BBL has changed utterly from that first start-up event broadcast exclusively by Fox Sports as Cricket Australia eagerly sought a free-to-air buyer for domestic T20 cricket. Up to that time, it had been a product that not even Kerry Packer wanted, palming it off in his final broadcast rights deal in 2005.Fifteen years later, at 61 matches with an expanded finals series, this was the biggest BBL yet, maintaining a trend of competition growth that has been continued by Cricket Australia and its broadcast partners. This despite the fact that two of its key health indicators, broadcast audiences and attendances at the grounds, have been showing signs that the league’s extension is wearing thin. At the very least, it is not pulling in the sorts of big event audiences that characterised its supposed “peak” years in 2015-16 and 2016-17.ALSO READ: The Big Bash League team of the tournamentWhy is this the case? CA and its broadcasters are trying to figure things out for themselves, having called in former TV executive Dave Barham to conduct a review of the tournament. Barham had been instrumental in Ten’s award-winning coverage between 2013 and 2018, before briefly helming Seven’s new cricket department and then exiting for personal reasons ahead of the 2018-19 season. In 2018 he had reckoned that better cross-promotion of the BBL on international cricket and vice versa would help, as would better performances from the teams in the major markets of Sydney and Melbourne. The Sixers and the Stars held up their ends of the bargain this season.Moises Henriques receives the BBL trophy•Getty ImagesThose who have chosen to throw rocks at the BBL have generally picked up the argument that it is too long and cumbersome, there are not enough star players, and the tournament’s place amid the rhythms of the Australian season have been disrupted. First by the aftermath of the Newlands scandal last summer and then by the combination of a low drawing international season this time and the absence of the Australian side due to a tour of India at the height of the January school holidays. What these arguments miss, perhaps, are a longer story of growth from the 20-game, state-based Big Bash that began in 2005, and from that of a tiny domestic cricket broadcast product at the same time, to the most sought-after summer broadcast property in Australian sport as of 2017.Back then, the BBL was played over 35 matches, cost the Ten Network in the region of A$20 million a season to air exclusively in Australia, and pulled in an average national broadcast audience of more than one million viewers per fixture. After the 2017 peak, things began to trend down slightly in terms of crowds and broadcast audiences in 2017-18, the last season in which Ten held the rights, after an increase from 35 to 43 matches. When the new broadcast deal in 2018 wrenched the BBL away from Ten – a turn of events that still sticks in the craw of many at or associated with the network – it was no longer just a piece of fan-finding R&D for CA, but a commodity worth as much to Seven and Fox as the international season itself, for so long the bread and butter of cricket rights deals in Australia. So from A$20 million a season for 43 matches, the BBL’s value grew to effectively A$100 million a season for the addition of only 16 more games, before an extra two finals were tacked on this year.As CA’s head of commercial, Steph Beltrame, put it recently to SEN Radio: “T20 cricket already existed and the Big Bash at that time was really like a start-up. [In 2013] the description through media commentary was that Channel Ten had overpaid for this product. By the end of it after they had worked incredibly hard with us to build the product, I think the description was that they had a bargain.”Another $500 million is a lot of extra value wrought from a domestic tournament that, prior to 2013, did not really have its own broadcast deal, as it simply fell under the umbrella of Fox’s small-time contract with CA to air domestic matches played between the states. CA has, to its credit, ploughed much of this extra cash into the game’s community levels, the better to get club cricket growing again after a lull of several years, and also to capitalise on the interest of children and families that the BBL had been devised to attract in the first place. The crowd at the Melbourne Renegades verses Adelaide Strikers match•Getty ImagesAt the same time it has used money to help build the WBBL, now sitting happily in its own window at the front end of the season. That tournament is a good example of how the cricket landscape has been utterly changed by the BBL, though within the parameters first devised by CA when the governing body stopped short of allowing privately-owned clubs. A degree of central control, and balance within the context of the whole cricket season, has been maintained, meaning international cricket is still seen as the pinnacle for players, the Sheffield Shield and domestic limited-overs tournaments still have their – albeit fringe-dwelling – place, and the BBL is very seldom if ever set up to clash with either. For the players, coaches and clubs there is one imbalance about the balancing act: salaries for participants in the BBL bear absolutely no relationship to the value of the rights deal, unless they are overseas or marquee players fortunate enough to benefit from bundled deals with marketing and broadcast elements. Aside from the likes of Shane Warne, Kevin Pietersen and this season AB de Villiers, most players have given their time at remarkably good value for CA, something reflected in how it has become harder to attract overseas players to the longer event. That pressure has left broadcasters decrying the lack of “big names” populating the tournament, although it was seen with de Villiers or Chris Gayle at the Sydney Thunder before him, that no player, regardless of how talented he is, can overcome the handicaps of a squad that is otherwise poorly constructed or dimly led. Perhaps the area for most consideration as far as high profile players is concerned is how to bring the likes of David Warner, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins back into the fold for the pointy end of the tournament. Those sorts of names, already contracted to CA, would help bring the BBL a little more in the way of star power to match the brief but bright lights of the Australian Open tennis, which serves as cricket’s only genuine summer competition for broadcast audiences during the last two weeks of each January. And although Open tennis enjoyed several moments of television ubiquity around the runs of Nick Kyrgios, Ash Barty and Roger Federer, its average of around 726,000 viewers over two weeks was still outstripped by the BBL’s 780,000 over closer to seven weeks.Elsewhere, the contest for summer audiences isn’t one. Soccer’s A-League has been particularly hurt by comparison. Average A-League audiences have hovered for more than a decade at somewhere between 50-75,000 viewers nationally on subscription services, with free-to-air peaks like the average 358,000 who watched the 2014 competition final. The BBL’s broadcast audience, even without the still rubbery figures of the streaming service Kayo places it comfortably ahead of average audiences recorded for the major winter NRL and AFL competitions.AB de Villiers goes aerial•Getty ImagesSo there is plenty to suggest that the gentle decline of the BBL’s audiences in recent years is not, as the academic and social commentator Waleed Aly put it on ABC debate show Offsiders, “the BBL falling on its face”. Instead there is cause to ponder how the BBL fits into the season, whether it should be played as a long tournament or a short, sharp league, and how much the drop off in crowds and audiences this season was influenced, like the rest of the country, by its extreme weather. From 2011 to 2019, the BBL had only three abandoned matches in total, and nine affected by rain to the extent that they required DLS. This season alone there have been two abandonments, and no fewer than eight fixtures requiring DLS, including the final. That final, incidentally, recorded an average national broadcast audience of 1.2 million for a match that looked so unlikely that there were even some first edition newspapers that carried columns indicating it had been abandoned. This after the Thursday night fixture between the Stars and the Thunder at the MCG drew an average of 1.048 million viewers, only the fourth match of the competition to crack the one million mark. These matches took place after a week’s gap to the previous finals, indicating that after weeks of at least one game a day and often more, the appetite had returned. It is worth pondering how much less CA would have sold the BBL for had it retained the 35-game length that seemed to hit the sweet spot five years ago. The subsequent extension in games has meant that quite stable numbers of attendees and broadcast viewers are spread more thinly. Precious few respondents to any CA survey about what fans want from the BBL in 2020-21 would find themselves answering “more”.There is much that has changed in the decade since that first final, but the thrill of the BBL as an event remains. What CA and its broadcasters should actively discuss is whether the bankable audiences over seven weeks of a 61-game season are going to be as thrilled, engaged and deeply involved as those who salivated over 35. That, after all, is why the BBL began.

How many men have scored a Test triple-century in a team's second innings?

And what’s the most wickets in a Test by someone who also bagged a pair?

Steven Lynch17-Mar-2020Who was Yabba, apparently the only spectator at the recent ODI between Australia and New Zealand? asked Maurice Evans from New Zealand

“Yabba” was the nickname given to Stephen Harold Gascoigne, a Sydney rabbit-seller who became famous for his raucous pronouncements from the Hill during matches at the SCG. Arguably the best-recalled example of his output was his advice to the England captain Douglas Jardine during the Bodyline tour: “Leave our flies alone Jardine! They’re the only friends you’ve got out here.”A statue of Yabba was unveiled on the Hill in 2008, which is why he was, poetically speaking, the only onlooker at the recent ODI in Sydney, after spectators were excluded for health reasons. The official attendance of zero would appear to be an unbeatable record low: according to the Melbourne statistician Charles Davis, the previous-smallest daily attendance for an international match in Australia was 17, for the final day of the 1967-68 Adelaide Test – India were nine down overnight, and 161 behind; Australia needed six overs on the final morning to pick up the last wicket.Ian Chappell, in a recent ESPNcricinfo article, entertainingly recalled a Sheffield Shield match that started with just one spectator in attendance. I seem to remember a report of a match in Zimbabwe that started with no one watching at all, but I’m not sure when that was!I noticed that Mitchell Starc has bowled 70 of his 178 victims in ODIs, which is almost 40%. Is this a record? asked Rick McDonough from Australia

Mitchell Starc’s percentage of bowled dismissals in one-day internationals – 39.33% – is indeed a record for anyone with more than 100 wickets. Next come Waqar Younis, with 151 out of 416 (36.3%), the West Indian Jerome Taylor, with 45 out of 128 (35.16%) and Wasim Akram, with 176 out of 502 (35.06%). If we drop the qualification to 50 wickets, Starc comes in third, behind another Pakistani – offspinner Tauseef Ahmed, with 23 bowled out of 55 wickets (41.82%) – and another rapid Aussie, Shaun Tait, with 25 out of 62 (40.32%).How many men have scored a Test triple-century in a team’s second innings? asked Ahmed Raza from Pakistan

Only two batsmen have managed a triple-century in their team’s second innings in a Test. For a long time the only one to achieve it was Hanif Mohammad, with his monumental match-saving 337 against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1957-58. With Pakistan trailing by 473 runs after the first innings, Hanif batted for 970 minutes (or 999, by some accounts), and Pakistan escaped with a draw. Nearly 56 years later, in February 2014, Hanif was joined by Brendon McCullum, who made 302 (in 775 minutes) for New Zealand against India in Wellington. The highest score in the fourth innings of a Test is 223, by George Headley for West Indies against England in a timeless Test in Kingston in 1929-30. For the full list of second-innings double-centuries, click here.Sachin Tendulkar has been dismissed in the nineties in ODIs 18 times, and has been out for 99 thrice•Getty ImagesI noticed that Kane Williamson had made seven nineties in ODIs, and Virat Kohli six. Who’s top of this list? asked Anuram Bhatti from India

Kane Williamson’s current tally of seven scores of between 90 and 99 in one-day internationals puts him joint-sixth (with India’s Mohammad Azharuddin) on this particular list. Jacques Kallis made eight, and Nathan Astle, Aravinda de Silva and Grant Flower nine – but way ahead, with twice as many, is Sachin Tendulkar, whose 18 included three 99s.What’s the most wickets in a Test by someone who also bagged a pair? asked Ron Houghton from England

The Surrey and England bowler George Lohmann holds this particular record. He took 15 wickets – 7 for 38 and 8 for 7 – against South Africa in Port Elizabeth in 1895-96, but was also dismissed for ducks in both innings.More recently, Bhagwath Chandrasekhar took 12 for 104 (two 6 for 52s) for India against Australia in Melbourne in 1977-78, and Waqar Younis 12 for 130 (7 for 76 and 5 for 54) for Pakistan against New Zealand in Faisalabad in 1990-91. In all, there have been 11 instances of a bowler combining ten or more wickets in a Test with a pair with the bat.Use our
