Evangelos Marinakis ‘polarises opinion’ but Nottingham Forest legend Stuart Pearce explains why you ‘can’t knock’ larger-than-life Reds owner after bold ‘we always win’ Morgan Gibbs-White statement

Stuart Pearce admits Evangelos Marinakis “polarises opinion”, but the Nottingham Forest legend says you “can’t knock” the Reds’ enigmatic owner.

Greek shipping magnate Marinakis completed a takeover at the City Ground in 2017. Big plans were drawn up at that stage, but it took five years for Steve Cooper to deliver on an ambitious remit and return Premier League football to Trentside.

Marinakis has made his mark on the English top-flight since then, with elaborate recruitment drives, emotional online statements, banning of certain pundits, marches onto the pitch and threats of legal action against rivals seeing him make plenty of headlines.

WHAT PEARCE SAID

The 57-year-old, who also owns Olympiakos and Rio Ave, has become box office in his own right. Forest icon Pearce, speaking in association with the online casino Casino.org, told GOAL when asked for his opinion on Marinakis: “He’s come to the club, put his money into the club, he’s larger than life in regard to how he is and what he is.

“To be fair, the proof is in the pudding. Where Forest are at the moment, in Europe, the fact that he has got them promoted under his tenureship, I think he is doing a lot right. He polarises opinion a little bit in some of the things he does, but there is a real passion for the club to do well. He wants to drive it. You can’t knock it.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Marinakis has attracted criticism from some, but could be considered the model owner in many ways – with it impossible to question his commitment of passion and funding to the Forest cause. Pearce added: “I think the big thing is some of the things we don’t see, behind the scenes, what’s the relationship with the manager like on a daily basis, and various other bits and pieces. Are they enjoying working for him? All of those things go into the mix as well. That is something we won’t be privy to.

“Forest are looking as strong as they have been for a number of years, which is an understatement – you are going back 20-30 years now for the last time we were in Europe. The proof is in the pudding, he’s put his money into the football club, they have got a wealth of talent on the playing list and the fans are making that football club bounce at the moment – with the home games being sold out. I think that is more of an indicator as to how he’s doing.”

Marizanne Kapp's absence did not affect South Africa, says Klaas

Australia’s Darcie Brown, who got 5 for 21, felt day two could be “interesting”, given it was “a bowler-friendly wicket”

The heartbreak of being without superstar Marizanne Kapp did not derail South Africa’s confidence and focus, said debutant quick Masabata Klaas after the tourists endured a torrid initiation to Test cricket against Australia at the WACA.South Africa’s hopes of a major upset in their first Test against Australia were rocked when Kapp was ruled out due to illness. She had been absent from training in the lead-up to the match, but was expected to play. The South Africa camp had hoped she could pull through on match day, but she did not feel well enough. “We only found out when we had to play that she’s not going to play,” Klaas told reporters after day one of the Test. After being sent in to bat, South Africa’s batting wilted against sustained pressure from Australia’s quicks, who bowled a disciplined line outside off stump that had batters perishing to loose shots. Without the mighty presence of Kapp, South Africa lost eight wickets in a humiliating first session before being routed for just 76 in their lowest ever Test score in an innings that lasted 31.2 overs.”I don’t think so,” Klaas said when asked if South Africa were rattled in the wake of Kapp’s absence. “We’re confident enough and have a strong batting line-up, so I won’t say that her not being here affected the team.”While it was a difficult day for South Africa, Klaas was a shining light on her debut as she ripped open Australia’s top order by dismissing Phoebe Litchfield, Ellyse Perry and Tahlia McGrath cheaply. Her performance earned praise from Kapp, who also voiced on social media her lament that South Africa did not select young quick Eliz-mari Marx.

Learning from the success of Australia’s quicks, Klaas continued the strong form she had showed during the white-ball series, where South Africa enjoyed historic first victories over Australia in the T20I and ODI formats.”I watched the Australian bowlers, and I saw that there was something on this pitch. So I said to myself, ‘I’m gonna make use of it’,” she said. “So I went out there with a positive mindset of hitting my line and lengths, so that worked for me.”Despite Klaas’ heroics, South Africa started wilting in oppressive conditions as they went through the motions in the back end of the day’s play. But the late wickets of Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy, who fell in the penultimate over before stumps for 99, has given South Africa faint hope of igniting a comeback.Related

Healy's 99, Brown's five wickets headline Australia's dominance

“Her [Healy’s] wicket was a game-changer, but we have to come back… we still have another five wickets to take tomorrow,” Klaas said. “The more you are in, the easier it is [to bat]. [The batters need to] stay longer at the pitch.”Brown: Anything can happen on ‘bowler-friendly wicket’Boasting a lead of 175 runs with five wickets in hand, Australia are in firm control, and there is the prospect of the match lasting just two days in what would be an anti-climax after the absorbing white-ball series.”I think it should be a really interesting day tomorrow,” quick Darcie Brown, who took 5 for 21, said. “It’s a bowler-friendly wicket, so anything can happen.”Brown was the standout with her first five-wicket haul in Test cricket, and her fiery bowling was tailor made for a green-tinged surface that fittingly offered plenty for the quicks in Test cricket’s return to the WACA. She was also constantly armed with a packed slips cordon to rekindle images of lore on the famous ground.”I had a moment where I was like ‘This is so cool’ just looking at all the slips,” Brown said. “I’ve never bowled with a seven-two [field]… only two on the leg side. It was an amazing moment.”

'Can't keep making the same mistakes,' says van der Dussen

“We can maybe be just a bit braver,” stand-in T20I captain van der Dussen says after the 3-0 defeat to West Indies

South Africa were “taught a lesson in how to play in Caribbean conditions” in the opinion of stand-in T20I captain Rassie van der Dussen, who oversaw a 3-0 sweep at the hands of West Indies.Van der Dussen, who is not part of South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad despite being the second-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket in 2024, stood in for Aiden Markram, as captain and No. 4 batter, with disappointing results. South Africa slumped to a second successive T20I series defeat to West Indies. They have not won a T20I series out of the four they have played under white-ball coach Rob Walter and kept “making the same mistakes,” van der Dussen said.He identified South Africa’s batting, especially upfront, as too circumspect. “From a batting front, we can maybe be just a bit braver,” he said. “We saw the way that the West Indies play, especially in the powerplay. They really take it on. When the ball’s new, it’s easier to score. It gets tough towards the back end when the ball gets soft.”Related

Markram not a typical SA captain (and that's a good thing)

Batting first, West Indies put on scores of 64 for 1 and 51 for 1 in the powerplays in the first two games, and chasing 164 in the final game on Sunday, they raced to 83 without loss in that period. South Africa were 46 for 3 and 85 for 2 chasing (the latter their highest powerplay score) and 45 for 2 batting first. The obvious difference is the number of wickets lost among a top order that will need to do duty at the T20 World Cup. Both Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock enjoyed some individual success – Hendricks with his 51-ball 87 in the first game and de Kock with a 17-ball 41 in the second – but their partnership only succeeded once and Ryan Rickelton, the No. 3, was unable to get past 20.Van der Dussen put some of that down to exhaustion and some to taking longer than they should to assess conditions, but remained harsh in his assessment. “We just couldn’t adapt early enough. We had a long week in terms of layovers in Miami and so forth. We saw that in the first match, but you can’t keep making the same mistakes.”The middle order didn’t fare much better – van der Dussen was the only batter of those carded No. 4 to 7 to get two scores in double-figures – but they will be entirely replaced by Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs, which should boost South Africa’s power-hitting.The problem? None of them were in the IPL 2024’s top-ten run-scorers’ list and all were inconsistent to varying degrees at the tournament.Klaasen started the IPL well but fell away in the middle period, though he did score a half-century in the second qualifier; Markram and Miller only scored one fifty each in 11 innings and nine innings respectively; Stubbs, the best of the lot, scored three fifties and showed off good finishing skills in his time in India.Van der Dussen was hopeful that their return to the national side will boost the scoring rate. “The guys are very experienced. Many of them have played CPL a few times,” he said. “We don’t know what conditions we’re going to get in the USA but the middle order is made up of very experienced, world-class players.”Anrich Nortje has had a poor time of it, both at the IPL and in the Caribbean•Getty Images

Anrich Nortje’s form remains a concernMatters appear more worrying on the bowling front, where van der Dussen said West Indies “just out-skilled us” as South Africa “tried a few different things but nothing seemed to work”. The biggest concern is Anrich Nortje, who went wicketless in the two matches he played and continued to concede runs heavily – as he did at the IPL – but there may also be some furrowed brows over the fitness of Ottneil Baartman. He bowled his full quota of four overs in the first match but picked up a lower limb strain and did not play the next two games. Baartman offers more variations than anyone else in the South African squad, especially as Lungi Ngidi is only part of the reserves, and his availability for the tournament could be crucial to their chances.South Africa were without Kagiso Rabada, who was recovering from a soft tissue infection, for this series and Tabraiz Shamsi, who travelled with the squad but did not play a game because of a lower limb injury. Bjorn Fortuin operated as the first-choice spinner and was fairly economical but only picked up one wicket. It could even be argued that he was outshone by newcomer Nqaba Peter, the legspinner, who is not part of the T20 World Cup squad but is a prospect for the future. Asked to identify some positives, Peter was immediately on van der Dussen’s mind. “Youngster Nqaba Peter made his debut and looks like he’s been playing for a few years already,” he said. “And Bjorn Fortuin bowled well at stages. So there’s some glimpses here and there, which we’ve got to look for. But I think overall we were just short of the mark by quite a long way this week.”South Africa have one more opportunity to fine tune. They will play a warm-up match against a yet-to-be-confirmed opposition in Florida on Wednesday before their tournament begins against Sri Lanka in a week’s time.

Suryakumar, Hardik-Chawla crush SRH to raise hopes of mid-table contenders

A sensational unbeaten 102 off 51 balls from Suryakumar Yadav on the back of Piyush Chawla and Hardik Pandya’s three-wicket hauls helped Mumbai Indians (MI) to their fourth win of the season as they got the better of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by seven wickets in Mumbai. The win also lifted MI out of the bottom of the table to ninth.A run fest was promised at Wankhede Stadium with SRH visiting. Who would have doubted this considering the last time SRH and MI clashed, record books were rewritten. Instead, the MI bowlers came to the fore as SRH were restricted to 173 for 8. In reply, the SRH bowlers also got the new ball to move around and got three powerplay wickets. But Suryakumar decided to do Suryakumar things as he launched an attack on the SRH bowlers, Marco Jansen in particular, to get things back on track. Tilak Varma played the perfect foil with 37 not out off 32 adding 143 off 79 balls with Suryakumar to help MI seal the win in 17.2 overs.1:14

‘Hardik’s bowling today a positive sign for India with the World Cup coming’

A T20 or a Test?

First nine balls: 26 for 0.Next 19 balls: 6 for 3.Chasing 174 at a venue where scores in excess of 180 have been breached in six out of ten innings this season coming into this game did not feel like a daunting ask, but the SRH bowlers made life extremely tough for the batters. There was a lot of swing and seam available and, initially, the bowlers even struggled to control the swing. They bowled 18 extras in the first three overs, but once they found their lengths, batting started to feel arduous. The ball zipped off the surface, the batters were beaten multiple times, and wickets started to fall.It was the Test-match length that got the SRH quicks the wickets. Jansen first struck with a seaming delivery that Ishan Kishan could only edge to first slip. And when it’s Test-match length we are talking about, how can Pat Cummins not come into the picture? Cummins bowled a sensational first over, a wicket-maiden in which Rohit Sharma was dismissed off a big top edge. Bhuvneshwar Kumar then got Naman Dhir for a nine-ball duck, dismissed flashing to first slip. Not a single run was scored off the bat between overs 1.3 and 4.4 with MI all over the place.1:23

Moody: Surya consistently does things very few can

SKY does a SKY

After three overs in which nine runs were scored, Suryakumar decided enough was enough. He first took on Cummins before reserving special treatment for Jansen. He went 4, 4, 6 in the seventh over before swatting Jansen over fine leg for a flat six as overs six and seven yielded a combined 38 runs. From 4 off 7, Suryakumar moved to 32 off 14 in no time and all the initial momentum that SRH had gained was lost.Tilak played the role of the second fiddle to perfection even as Suryakumar kept on going. In all, Suryakumar walloped Jansen for 32 runs off nine balls, which included four fours and two sixes, and he reached his fifty off 30 balls.Hardik Pandya and Piyush Chawla took three wickets apiece•AFP/Getty Images

There were a few concerned faces in the MI dugout – and no doubt among people interested in India’s fortunes at the T20 World Cup next month – when Suryakumar was seen limping for a bit, but the big hits didn’t cease. A Bhuvneshwar slower ball was mowed over long-on before Shahbaz Ahmed was swept twice in two balls. Suryakumar then raced from 82 to 96 in three balls going 4, 4, 6 in the 17th over. And then, with six needed to win and four for his century, he backed away and went inside out over the covers off T Natarajan to finish the job. This was Suryakumar’s second IPL hundred, and sixth in T20 cricket.

Head rides his luck early

It was a strange sort of powerplay with the ball for MI. They didn’t bowl badly but hardly found any luck going their way. Travis Head got going with an inside-edged four past leg stump in the first over off Nuwan Thushara and then one more in the second over off debutant Anshul Kamboj. Kamboj should have had his maiden IPL wicket in the next over when he had Head’s off stump splat on the ground, but he had over-stepped. Head ended up taking him for 19 in the over, and SRH were away.Jasprit Bumrah took out Abhishek Sharma, caught behind for 11 off 16, but SRH still managed to reach 56 for 1 in the powerplay. MI would have been miffed because they drew 18 false shots in the first six overs, but only got one wicket to show for their effort.1:54

Moody: Chawla would have really enjoyed the Klaasen dismissal

Chawla and Hardik turn the tide

Kamboj had another chance to send back Head, but Thushara failed to hang on to a relatively simple chance at deep third in the eighth over. The 23-year-old Kamboj finally had luck going his way when a bail-trimmer sent Mayank Agarwal packing. Thereon it was the Chawla and Hardik show.At 88 for 2 after ten, SRH were placed comfortably, but Chawla changed things by picking up Head for a 30-ball 48. A slog sweep was smashed straight to deep backward square leg before Hardik took out Nitish Reddy with a short-length ball that was spooned straight up. Chawla then had Heinrich Klassen playing on as SRH slipped from 90 for 2 to 96 for 5 in 11 balls.Jansen and Shahbaz Ahmed resisted for a bit, but Hardik had them back in the 16th over with SRH at 125 for 7 and soon 136 for 8 with Chawla snaring Abdul Samad. That SRH even breached the 170-run mark was down to Cummins’ unbeaten 17-ball 35.Eventually, it wasn’t enough.

Harry Maguire issues 'no excuses' warning to Man Utd team-mates after getting a 'lot better' acquainted with Ruben Amorim's system during 'tough' pre-season

Harry Maguire has warned his Manchester United team-mates that there can be "no excuses" heading into the 2025-26 campaign after a strong pre-season under Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils fell to a shocking 15th-place finish in the Premier League last term, their lowest position in over half a century, marking one of the darkest chapters in the club’s storied history.

Maguire says United must deliverClub endured worst season in 51 yearsFocus now fully on domestic successFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

For the first time in years, United will be completely absent from European football after their painful Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao back in May. Without continental competition on the calendar, their fixture count could drop significantly. Should they exit early from the League Cup or FA Cup, the team could even end up playing only 40 matches over the course of the campaign.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The reduced workload puts an even greater emphasis on excelling in the Premier League, which now becomes the club’s undisputed priority. United’s top brass have made it clear that a return to European football by the 2026-27 season is non-negotiable. For that, the team must perform well domestically to earn a place among the continent’s elite.

WHAT MAGUIRE SAID

Maguire, who has featured sparingly in pre-season preparations, starting just one of the club’s opening four summer friendlies, is fully aware of the significance of this season. Speaking to , the centre-back emphasised the need for accountability and unity as the club seeks redemption.

"I just want to be part of a successful team this season," Maguire said. "I think last season was a tough season for everyone individually, but also as a team, as a squad, as a club. This season, there are no excuses. We're going to have a lot of time to prepare for the Premier League games, and we've got to make sure we're ready. So, for myself, it's making sure I'm available, I'm fit, I'm ready to go, and give everything I can to this team and this club."

United have had a gruelling pre-season under Amorim, and Maguire believes that the Portuguese manager has built a strong tactical foundation for the upcoming season.

"It's something that [Ruben Amorim] reiterated, that we didn't have enough time on the training pitch," Maguire continued. "This pre-season, it's been tough on the legs, but the majority of it has been tactical. So, it's nice to do the drills that are tactical rather than running around poles and running around the pitch.

"It's been an enjoyable pre-season, but a pre-season that we've all learnt from. We know the system a lot better, and we've just got to take that into the games now."
