He said on Instagram: "Little bit different this one, guys, but I think it was very, very deserved. Seven and a half years, a truly amazing, fantastic, wonderful, and special place that will remain in my heart forever. I feel what we achieved as a team, a club, an organisation, a family – that's not just players and the staff but you as fans – has been absolutely incredible. The ups, the downs, the good and bad times, the treble, the centurions, the formidables, the four in a row, you name it, we've kind of done it. I feel like I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you.

"From Khaldoon,to Txiki and obviously the manager, you've truly left a special place in my heart forever and I will be fully in debt, grateful for what you made me not just experience, but my family and the good times we shared on the pitch and off the pitch, and especially when we won trophies i always enjoyed.

"I just wanted to say thank you to the lads, the group of players that I've been with past and present, it's been an absolute honour. Been very very fortunate to play with some legends of the game but there is still top top legends there at the club, top players at the club and I believe that you can carry on keep achieving what we've achieved over the last number of years. it's kind of not a farewell but a see you soon.

"Thank you once again to the fans, thank you to everyone who was associated with it from 2017 to this present day. My chapter is moving somewhere different. it's a little bit of a different challenge but one I'm really looking forward to and you know it attacking really."

NZ look to make it 3/3 in Chennai amid their captain's big return

Bangladesh meanwhile will need to change their tactics as they look to recover from their heavy defeat against England

Mohammad Isam12-Oct-20231:16

Does a turner at Chepauk give Bangladesh a bigger chance?

Big picture: Can Bangladesh bounce back? The New Zealand juggernaut rolled into Chennai but in typical Kiwi fashion, it was a quiet entrance. New Zealand comfortably knocked over England and Netherlands, and will now take on a Bangladesh side smarting from a big loss against England. The only saving grace for Bangladesh is a Chennai pitch that is likely to help the spinners, but many of the New Zealand players have IPL experience to count on, so they will know what to expect at this venue. The big news for New Zealand is the return of their regular captain, Kane Williamson, who is returning after a seven-month injury break. There was a time this year when it looked unlikely that Williamson will play the World Cup but a proper recovery now means that he can make a smooth return to the line-up, with his side already having four points on the board.Related

New Zealand have a number of standout performers from these matches, particularly Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, who made superb hundreds against England. Will Young and Tom Latham made important runs against the Netherlands while Mitchell Santner had a great all-round showing too. They have other aces up their sleeves against Bangladesh. Ish Sodhi could enter the playing XI on the back of his six-wicket haul against Bangladesh a couple of weeks back in Dhaka. In any case, both sides will be looking at their spin stocks.Bangladesh’s big defeat against England undid a lot of their good work against Afghanistan in the first match. The pitch certainly differed between the two games in Dharamsala, but Bangladesh didn’t really adapt to the conditions. Their insistence on bowling outside off stump hurt them as they went wicketless going for that bowling line. Taskin Ahmed bowling just six overs, Shakib Al Hasan finishing his ten early and the overuse of offspin against left-handers were the sort of rigid tactics that Bangladesh will not want to repeat. They also have to sort out their batting line-up, and specifically answer questions about the opening pair and the lower middle order. Tanzid Hasan hasn’t made runs in the two innings so far, but it is still a small sample size to judge a new opener. Still, a World Cup campaign has its own challenges for Bangladesh so it won’t be a huge surprise if they send Mehidy Hasan Miraz to open with Litton Das. In that case, Mahmudullah and Nasum Ahmed are candidates to return in the lower middle-order. Left-arm spinner Nasum would ensure more depth in the spin department while Mahmudullah can add batting experience on a tricky Chepauk pitch.Bangladesh have great memories against New Zealand in subcontinent conditions, having beaten them 4-0 and 3-0 at home in the last 13 years. But on current form and especially in the World Cup, New Zealand are favourites.Form guideNew Zealand WWWWL (last five ODIs, most recent first)
Bangladesh LWLLWNew Zealand have the chance to win their first three matches of a World Cup for the third consecutive edition•ICC/Getty Images In the spotlight What would Williamson’s return mean for Rachin Ravindra? Not much, it is hoped. Ravindra’s great form with bat and usefulness with the ball makes him an automatic pick against Bangladesh. Ravindra made a monumental century in the World Cup opener against England, before following it up with a fifty against Netherlands. His intent suited New Zealand’s plans, as he played a variety of shots while keeping shape. Williamson confirmed in the pre-match press conference that Ravindra is part of their plans but it is unlikely that he will bat at No. 3.Litton Das’ sparkling 76 was the only positive for Bangladesh in their big defeat to England in Dharamshala. It included the usual Litton fare of beautifully timed shots and angled-bat shots that many batters dream to play. But frustratingly it is this free-flowing shot-making that often ends his innings prematurely. Litton’s ODI form this year pales in comparison to last year’s 52.45 average in 13 innings. Bangladesh will gain greatly from his form if Litton kicks on from his half-century against EnglandTeam news: Who will make way for Williamson? The toss-up could be between Glenn Philips and Mark Chapman now that Williamson is back in the New Zealand line-up after nine months. Sodhi comes into the picture too on a Chepauk pitch helpful for spinners.New Zealand (probable): 1 Devon Conway, 2 Will Young, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Rachin Ravindra, 5 Tom Latham (wk), 6 Daryl Mitchell, 7 Glenn Phillips, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Mark Henry, 10 Lockie Ferguson/Ish Sodhi, 11 Trent BoultA brave team management will pick Tanzid despite his low scores. Otherwise, Mehidy is queued as the opener. New Zealand’s left-handers could keep Mahedi Hasan in the line-up too.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Litton Das, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 5 Towhid Hridoy, 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Mehidy Hasan, 8 Mahedi Hasan, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Shoriful Islam, 11 Mustafizur Rahman/Nasum AhmedBangladesh had little to cheer for in Dharamsala against England•AFP/Getty Images Pitch and conditions: Spin to win in Chepauk India’s spin trio took 6 for 104 against Australia in the previous match at Chepauk. Both sides will look to mount a spin attack regardless of when they bat in this game. India showed the ease of chase against Australia but teams have to be careful of bowlers who can move the ball. The weather is likely to be mostly dry, with a low chance of rain. Stats and trivia: NZ hold World Cup edge over Bangladesh New Zealand snapped Bangladesh’s long-standing home winning streak in ODIs over them last month when the visitors won 2-0 in Dhaka. Bangladesh have never defeated New Zealand in five matches in the World Cup. Mahedi Hasan’s 4 for 71 in the previous game is the most expensive four-wicket (or more) haul by a Bangladeshi spinner in ODIs. New Zealand have a chance to win their first three matches of a World Cup for the third consecutive edition, having done it in 2019 and 2015 previously. They had also had similar runs in the 1992 and 2007 editions. Quotes “I think certainly in the subcontinent, they [Bangladesh] are very, very familiar with these conditions and they have a number of match-winners throughout their side.”
“It is always challenging to tackle the new ball. If we start well, it certainly helps the team. I think it is also important to come back from losing two or three early wickets. We have to focus on getting to a big score from a tough situation.”

Unstoppable Abhishek keeps Punjab on top; Mumbai and Kerala off to perfect start

The 2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy got underway last Monday and most of the teams have played five rounds of matches so far. There have been plenty of exciting performances and records broken, including one that was long-standing and rather iconic. Let’s look at how the first week of the tournament has gone down:

Abhishek powers high-flying Punjab

Punjab began the season like they ended the last – with a defeat to Saurashtra, but have since been dominant in in Ranchi, racking up four wins on the trot to go top of Group C. Abhishek Sharma has been at the heart of Punjab’s hot streak, with his 112 off 51 deliveries, along with Anmolpreet Singh’s 26-ball 87 powering them to a mammoth total of 275 for 6 against Andhra in their next game. This is the highest team total in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy history, going past Mumbai’s 258 for 4 against Sikkim in 2019.Abhishek went on to hit 82 off 38 as Punjab racked up another 200-plus total against Railways in another resounding win before smashing 53 off 26 in their chase of 94 against Manipur.Related

  • Ashutosh Sharma breaks Yuvraj's record for fastest T20 fifty by an Indian

Ashutosh zooms past Yuvraj with record fifty

Railways’ Ashutosh Sharma broke Yuvraj Singh’s record for fastest T20 fifty by an Indian off just 11 deliveries in their win against Arunachal Pradesh. On any other day, Upendra Yadav’s unbeaten 103 off 51 from No. 4 would have been the highlight of the day, but Ashutosh stole the show, smashing eight sixes and a solitary four in an innings that lasted 12 deliveries. He now has the record for the second-fastest fifty in all T20s.

Ravi Teja wrecks Chhattisgarh

In this season’s best bowling display so far, medium pacer Ravi Teja ran through Chhattisgarh to finish with figures of 6 for 13 as Hyderabad bowled their opponents out for 97 in Jaipur. It was also his first five-wicket haul in T20s. Hyderabad eventually got there in 16 overs without much difficulty.Yashasvi Jaiswal is Mumbai’s leading run-scorer so far this season•AFP/Getty Images

Mumbai, Vidarbha and Kerala remain unbeaten

Defending champions Mumbai got off to the perfect start, winning all five of their matches to be top of Group A. They had a close encounter against Baroda, but all of their other wins were quite comfortable. Yashasvi Jaiswal has shown good form for them, hitting two half-centuries. Hyderabad and Baroda are hot on their heels, though, with four wins each.Kerala have also had a perfect start to their campaign, with centuries from Vishnu Vinod and Rohan Kunnummal the highlights of their five wins on the trot. Services nearly spoiled their party in their second game but Kerala managed to eke out a one-run victory. Himachal, with 16 points, are in second place in Group B, while Riyan Parag’s four consecutive half-centuries in Mumbai have helped Assam stay in contention with 12 points along with Chandigarh and Odisha. Both Punjab and Goa have 16 points and occupy the top two positions in Group C, although Punjab have a much superior net run rate. Saurashtra, Gujarat, Andhra and Railways all have 12 points each and are right behind the two leading teams.Vidarbha, with four wins in four, lead Group D, despite having played a game less than Bengal, who sit in second place with 12 points. Jharkhand are third, also with 12 points, and they too have played one fewer game than Bengal.Delhi had a game washed out, but won all of their other four matches and lead Group E. With 18 points in the bag, they have a huge lead over Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, who have 10 points each.

Australia aim to double South Asian participation in cricket by 2027

Cricket Australia has set a target of nearly doubling the number of players from South Asian backgrounds in the professional game by 2027 as part of an overall plan to boost participation and attendance among multicultural communities. The aim is to have 8% South Asian representation at first-class, state and W/BBL level by 2027, up from the current figure of 4.2%. They have also set the goals of doubling the number of people from South Asian backgrounds who attend matches in Australia each year from 100,000 to 200,000 and increasing the number of those registered to play from 70,000 to 100,000 by 2027.Last year’s men’s T20 World Cup, which saw more than 90,000 attend the India vs Pakistan match at the MCG, highlighted the opportunity for Cricket Australia to grow the game.Related

  • Usman Khawaja to contest ICC armband charge, says it was for a bereavement

However, one of the big challenges has been converting a large following into a pathway for player talent, as well as broader representation in the running of the sport.Usman Khawaja, Alana King and Lisa Sthalekar have been key figures in putting the new Multicultural Action Plan together, which was launched at the MCG on Friday. While there has been specific focus on South Asian growth, the plan – and the funding that comes with it – covers all multicultural communities.”I was out of the Australian team and thought what can I do about this, what legacy do I want to leave, what can I actually do to make this game to be in a batter place,” Khawaja said. “The first thing I said is we have such great participation of South Asian communities and multicultural communities in Australia but we never see that reflected in the Australian cricket team, both male and female, especially the male team over the last 100 years.”For me, personally, I felt we needed to do things a little differently. Cricket Australia has always been great supporters of multiculturalism in Australia… but it hasn’t equated to more participation at the highest levels.”He drew on an example of when he was asked by someone how they could become a coach. “I said I wasn’t exactly sure, because unless you were a past player or had been in the system before it’s so hard to crack this system. The issue is that for a long time Cricket Australia has been a very white-dominated sport.”Khawaja, who was born in Pakistan before moving to Australia aged five, said that when he was growing up, he would struggle to relate to his team-mates and that coaches did not have an understanding of some of his experiences. But he stressed that sport had helped bring down barriers for him. He added that it was vital to have multicultural representation in all facets of the game including board level and CA staff.Usman Khawaja spoke about how having broader representation can alleviate stereotypes•Getty Images

“We couldn’t be stronger that we want to make every single cricket environment, whether that’s clubs, playing, coaching, administering, just the most inclusive places we possibly can,” CA chief executive Nick Hockley said. “The metrics [show] that we are not yet representative of the community we serve.”Khawaja further explained that having broader representation in the sport can help alleviate stereotypes, again talking from personal experience of when he was observing Ramadan during his time with New South Wales.”I was told I was lazy growing up,” he said. “There was a stereotype that subcontinent cricketers didn’t try hard enough. There wasn’t a way to break that down. All my coaches were white Australian, selectors were white Australian, they didn’t really understand me or my culture.”Doing Ramadan as a Muslim, at New South Wales no one had any idea what I was doing. From the naked eye, you think ‘Uzzie isn’t training hard enough, he’s not working hard enough’. It’s 6.30 in the arvo [afternoon] and I haven’t eaten or drunk all day and I’m cooked. But we are doing a fitness session and I’m still out there. Yes, I’m lagging behind but I’m still doing the work. So it’s those little things that you can break down if you have someone from subcontinental background.”

AYRTON LUCAS VAI FICAR?

Eu apoio!”

Morgan Gibbs-White to Tottenham OFF?! Nottingham Forest refuse to sanction £60m deal for midfielder after 'illegal approach' from Spurs with official complaint sent to Premier League

Nottingham Forest have halted talks with Tottenham and are consulting legal counsel over what they claim was an illegal approach for Morgan Gibbs-White, according to multiple reports. It is reported that the Lilywhites had activated the midfielder’s £60m release clause without Forest’s permission to negotiate. The Telegraph has claimed that the deal is now completely off, but Sky Sports reports that Forest cannot actually block the transfer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Forest are said to be furious about a breach of confidentiality, alleging Spurs had insider knowledge of the exact clause. While the club may not be able to legally prevent the move, they are determined to delay and challenge it through formal channels. Gibbs-White had already agreed on personal terms, which has sparked anger among Forest supporters.

Sky Sports' report also states that Forest never gave Tottenham the green light to speak to Gibbs-White and now believe the Premier League rules were broken when the North London side held conversations with the England international. A medical had already been scheduled for Friday before Forest pulled the plug and stopped communication. Tottenham remain confident they acted lawfully and believe the release clause justifies their approach.

Explainer: How player trades work in the IPL

The Hardik Pandya trade was perhaps the most high-profile player transfer in IPL history. Here’s an explainer of how such trades work in the league

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Nov-2023

Hardik Pandya had “expressed a desire” to return to MI, according to a Gujarat Titans official•BCCI

What is a player trade, and when can it happen?
It’s when a player moves from the IPL franchise that has bought him to another franchise during the trading window. A trade can be an all-cash deal or a player-for-player swap. According to the IPL rules, the player-trading window starts a month after a season ends, stays open up to a week before the auction date, and then continues up until a month before the start of the next season. So the current trading window is open until December 12, with the auction scheduled for December 19, and it will open again on December 20 up to a month before the 2024 season begins.Have player trades always been there in the IPL?
Yes, the trading window was activated in 2009, when Mumbai Indians got Shikhar Dhawan from erstwhile Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in exchange for Ashish Nehra. What is a one-way trade?
A player moves from Team A to Team B in an all-cash deal. Team B will pay Team A an amount equivalent to the player’s price at the auction, or in Hardik Pandya’s case the amount Gujarat Titans paid when they signed him ahead of the 2022 player auction. There have been all-cash trades previously in the IPL as well, for example, when Kolkata Knight Riders traded in Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz in November 2022.Related

What is a two-way trade?
This is essentially a player swap between franchises, with the difference in their prices being paid by one team to the other.Do players have a say in the trades? Can they initiate it?
Yes, the player’s consent is mandatory before he is traded. In Hardik’s case, ESPNcricinfo understands that Mumbai Indians began discussions with Titans immediately after the 2023 IPL to figure whether it would be an all-cash trade or a player swap. The Titans director of cricket Vikram Solanki said Hardik had “expressed a desire” to return to Mumbai, who eventually paid INR 15 crore in an all-cash trade. But wasn’t Ravindra Jadeja banned for having a side chat with another franchise?
In 2010, the IPL had banned Ravindra Jadeja for one season because he did not sign his renewal contract with Rajasthan Royals, and attempted to negotiate a new contract with Mumbai. The IPL said at the time that he was in breach of player trading and operational rules. What if a player wants to move to another team but his franchise doesn’t want to let him go?
The franchise has the final say in that case on whether the player stays with them or not.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

What is a transfer fee? Who decides it? Is there a limit?
A transfer fee is an amount paid by one franchise to another during a trade, in addition to the player’s price. In Hardik’s case, Mumbai paid Titans an undisclosed transfer fee, and this amount will not impact a franchise’s auction purse. The transfer fee is mutually agreed between the franchises before the trade is completed. There is no limit for a transfer fee, but the amount is known only to the IPL and the franchises involved in the trade.Does the player get a cut of the transfer fee?
Yes. As per the contract, a player can get up to 50% of the transfer fee, but that depends on the agreement reached between him and the franchise that is selling him. There is no guarantee that the player will receive a share of the transfer fee.Does the transfer fee affect the auction purse?
No, it doesn’t. So in Hardik’s case, Mumbai’s auction purse will reduce by only INR 15 crore (Hardik’s price), while Titans’ purse will increase by that amount. The transfer fee is separate from the auction purse. So does it mean franchises with deeper pockets can gain by offering high transfer fees to lure players from other teams? Doesn’t it go against the principle of equality of the auction purse?
In a sense, yes, franchises can spend amounts much larger than their auction purse would allow to trade in the players they want. However, no trade can proceed without the consent of the team the player currently belongs to.
