James Vince's mighty season roars on as Essex take a pounding

Michael Klinger’s T20 hundreds record is next in his sights after fifth century

ECB Reporters Network02-Jun-2023James Vince followed up becoming the Vitality Blast’s highest run scorer by chalking up his fifth T20 century as Hampshire Hawks annihilated Essex.Vince is now only behind Michael Klinger in Blast hundreds having overtaken Luke Wright in the run charts on Wednesday, and only Wayne Madsen has more than his 280 runs in this year’s competition. His supreme 103 laid the foundations for a huge 215 target for the Eagles, which Nathan Ellis’ three for 10, Scott Currie’s three for 21 and Liam Dawson’s four for 21 made sure was never chasable.Dawson flowed with praise for his teammate. “It is a huge win. Vince was exceptional and proved how good a player he is. That hundred is the difference in the game.”I think he is getting better. He has been so consistent in his run scoring over the last couple of years. T20 is a high-risk game and the amount of times he scores runs is more often than not. He is getting better with age and is brilliant to have in our team.”Defending champions Hampshire eventually won by 118 runs with 35 balls to spare – the Hawks’ highest margin of victory after bowling the hosts out for 96 – to hand Essex their first T20 defeat of the year.Vince continued from his back-to-back unbeaten 88s, and his record-breaking, by pumping Aron Nijjar for two massive sixes back over his head with his first two balls faced.Ben McDermott was adjudged caught behind while Toby Albert took nine balls to get off the mark but Vince was terrorising the crowd and local residents – his eventual eight sixes threatened the slate and chimneys of the houses at the Hayes Close End.He monopolised the run-scoring, including 60 of the 101 stand with Albert, who improved his hitting to reach 38 before he was stumped.Vince was cleanly striking anything that was sent his way and brought up his century with another pulled maximum in 45 balls. He was furious when he slapped a Matt Critchley long hop to the deep midwicket boundary which began the fall of five wickets for 35 runs.Joe Weatherley had made a well-compiled 29 before he was caught at cover to follow Ross Whiteley, Aneurin Donald and James Fuller’s short stays. But a tame finale was avoided when Liam Dawson slog-swept three successive sixes to take 21 off the final over and give Hampshire 214. Daniel Sams was the only bowler not to go at a double figure run-rate for his three for 28, although Simon Harmer also pilfered three wickets.Essex tried to swing their way to victory but plays and misses dominated. Adam Rossington, who pumped two early sixes, was unfortunate to be given caught behind after the ball appeared to clip a stump rather than his bat.Dan Lawrence was lbw after 22 off 14, Feroze Khushi yorked by Dawson, Paul Walter stumped, Robin Das swatted to long off, Tom Westley drilled to cover and Nathan Ellis bowled Harmer. It had been a spell of five wickets in 23 balls for 20 runs.Dawson pinned Nijjar before Sams gave Vince his third catch of the night and Ellis his third wicket to finish off the comprehensive away victory.

Leeds and Farke given new int'l break injury boost alongside Ethan Ampadu

Leeds United are set to be handed a welcome double injury boost which involves captain Ethan Ampadu.

Farke facing big Leeds calls ahead of Championship run-in

The Whites and Daniel Farke are now preparing for a dash to the line in the Championship, looking to beat Sheffield United and Burnley to promotion and the second-tier title.

Leeds have taken just five points from their last four games which has allowed the Blades and the Clarets to close in, with eight fixtures remaining starting against Swansea City on Saturday.

One of the big talking points after the 2-2 draw with QPR last time out was Wilfried Gnonto’s impact in the No. 10 position, an area of the pitch Farke could look to address over the coming weeks. Gnonto replaced Brenden Aaronson at half-time and received praise from Farke after helping Leeds take a point away from London.

“I was convinced he would make an impact. If I had opted for Ilia Gruev [to start the match] I would also have opted for Willy Gnonto. Perhaps we would have had a better start if we had made those changes. The feeling is he’s playing more and more to create good situations in the centre and that’s what he did in the second half.”

Revealed: Where Farke has instructed Leeds to scout for summer signings

Leeds are yet to seal promotion, but Farke is already giving his scouts work to do ahead of the summer.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 24, 2025

Unfortunately, after an injury scare away with Italy U21s in the international break, Gnonto may not be immediately available to Farke as Leeds wait to see the extent of the ankle issue. However, the Whites have two players who look set to be close to a return.

Leeds to welcome back Ampadu and Bamford for run-in

As per Joe Donnohue of The Yorkshire Evening Post, Ampadu has been stepping up his knee injury recovery during the international break and is on course to return to team training.

The versatile midfielder has missed Leeds’ last five games and the club weren’t sure if his knee problem would require surgery, but it looks as if he could play a part in the run-in.

Alongside Ampadu, Patrick Bamford is finally closing in on a return from a hamstring injury. Donnohue adds that the forward ‘has been working on match fitness at Thorp Arch over the recent weeks and during the international break brought himself closer to an on-field return’.

Bamford has only played once in 2025 due to a hamstring issue but like Ampadu, could feature in the final eight games. Two experienced players in the Leeds squad, the pair returning would be a much-needed boost for Farke, who will be hoping to have every senior player available between now and May.

Potter now ready to sell four West Ham players on combined £310,000-a-week

West Ham United could be set for an important upcoming window and Graham Potter could ring the changes this summer after a frustrating campaign in East London.

West Ham looking to climb the table ahead of important summer

Compared to their recent Premier League seasons, it is fair to say that West Ham have fallen below expectations. Julen Lopetegui tried and failed to appease the hierarchy and supporters, leading to Potter’s appointment back in January.

Since the Englishman’s arrival, the Hammers have taken 11 points from a possible 27 in the English top-flight. That has been enough to see off the threat of relegation, while there is still scope to finish above the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Crystal Palace if they can string together a timely run of results.

However, there is an overwhelming feeling among the fanbase that their recruitment last summer hasn’t entirely worked out, something that could lead to movement in both directions during the off-season.

Evaluating the forward line, Evan Ferguson is unlikely to stay at West Ham beyond his loan stint. The Republic of Ireland international hasn’t delivered a single goal since joining from Brighton, which may pave the way for Corinthians forward Yuri Alberto to come in for a fee of £21 million.

Michail Antonio (injured)

Niclas Fullkrug

Danny Ings

Defensively, the Irons also want Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters on a free transfer, furthering suspicions that Potter could put his foot down in search of a new-look starting line-up ahead of next season.

Arming his group with exciting options is set to be a priority for Potter, that much is certain, but supporters may now have a glimmer of who could make way to fund his rebuild over the coming months.

Graham Potter set to put West Ham quartet up for sale

According to Claret and Hugh, West Ham could allow Kostas Mavropanos, Emerson, Guido Rodriguez and Niclas Fullkrug to depart. Maxwel Cornet may also be permitted an exit once he returns from his loan spell at Genoa.

Referring to the quartet mentioned, they claim a combined £310,000 per week total in wages at the London Stadium, which could help to fund a summer of spending should they all find suitable destinations.

The Hammers have now accelerated their plans to sign a midfielder, who could be perfect for Graham Potter’s system.

Carlos Soler is another loan star unlikely to earn a permanent stay in East London, indicating that Potter has decided to rip up parts of his squad to start afresh in what is set to be a new dawn under his stewardship.

West Ham fans will be happy to hear progress is underway ahead of the summer. Now, it is up to the remaining crop to prove they deserve to be a part of his long-term plans by delivering consistent Premier League results.

Litchfield, Sutherland centuries wipe Ireland out

Garth and Gardner help Australia finish their northern summer on a high

AAP28-Jul-2023Phoebe Litchfield became the second youngest Australian woman to hit an ODI century en route to taking her country to a comfortable 10-wicket win over Ireland in Dublin.Chasing 218 for victory, Litchfield hit an unbeaten 106 and Annabel Sutherland hit 109 not out to help Australia reach the target in 35.5 overs. The win wrapped the series up 2-0 for Australia and ended their northern summer tour after drawing the multi-format Ashes series with England to retain the Ashes.Playing without Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning, Rachael Haynes or Megan Schutt in an international for the first time in 14 years, Australia showed a glimpse of the future in the win.Irish-born seamer Kim Garth took 3 for 34 against her old side, while Ashleigh Gardner also claimed 3 for 38.In reply, Sutherland and Litchfield took hold as both struck their maiden white-ball international centuries. Sutherland’s 109 from 101 balls included 11 boundaries, while Litchfield’s 106 from 114 featured 14 fours. At 20 years and 101 days, the NSW prodigy also became the youngest Australian woman other than Meg Lanning to score a century in a 50-over match.”It means a lot,” Litchfield said. “We spoke about trying to have a better start up top, and I have been pretty dry in the runs column. So for Bellsy [Sutherland] and I to go out and win the game, was pretty cool.”The win came after Healy and Perry were both ruled out of the match and withdrawn from The Hundred in England through injury.Perry hurt her knee while batting in Australia’s ODI win over Ireland on Tuesday, and has now been ruled out for up to six weeks with the injury. And after battling through the Ashes with a fracture in her left index finger and right ring finger, Healy suffered a fresh break in her index finger on Tuesday after another blow.Australia expect both to be fit to return for their next international against West Indies in early October, while Litchfield will replace Healy at the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.Healy and Perry’s absences do come as a sizeable blow to The Hundred, given they are two of the biggest names in women’s cricket.Fellow Australian Heather Graham pulled out of the tournament earlier this week due to a calf injury, while Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell will both skip the men’s Hundred to manage their workloads.

West Indies recall Shimron Hetmyer and Oshane Thomas for ODIs against India

West Indies have recalled Shimron Hetmyer and Oshane Thomas into the ODI squad for the three-match series against India. According to a Cricket West Indies release, Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder are unavailable for selection, while Keemo Paul is out injured.Fast bowler Jayden Seales and legspinner Yannic Cariah are also back following their rehab after surgery, while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie returns having recovered from his lower-back injury.Related

Hetmyer was left out of the West Indies’ ODI World Cup Qualifier squad in May despite having made himself available for selection because the management wanted to give a longer run to the players who had performed well in the series leading up to it. West Indies failed to qualify for the main event after losing four out of seven games in the Qualifier. Hetmyer last played for West Indies in the home T20I series against New Zealand in August 2022. His last ODI was in July 2021, against Australia in Barbados.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Fast bowler Thomas, meanwhile, last played for West Indies in December 2021 and has been out of contention in recent times with fitness issues. He last played competitive cricket in 2022, when he turned up for Falcons in the Lanka Premier League.”We welcome Oshane and Shimron back into the group,” chief selector Desmond Haynes said. “Both have played at the international level before, with some success, and we believe they will fit well into the set-up. Oshane brings pace and is a potential wicket-taker with the new ball. Shimron’s style of batting will offer a lot especially in the middle stage of the innings and he is also a potential ‘finisher’.”Kensington Oval in Barbados is set to host the first two matches on July 27 and 29 respectively, while the third and final ODI will be played at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on August 1. A four-day camp was held at Kensington Oval to prepare the white-ball players for the series.

Reports suggested that Tudor wanted clarity on his situation if he were to manage the club at the Club World Cup. The Croatian didn't want to get caught off-guard after the Club World Cup. The board might not have been sure at first, but the feeling around the manager changed after Juventus clinched a Champions League spot by finishing fourth in the table with 70 points. The club has further called Tudor's extension a representation of his 'passion, charisma, and the spirit of Juventus' within him that will help take the club to higher stages.

With Tudor on board, Comolli's next target will be to address the situation of Randal Kolo-Muani. The French forward is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain and is set to stay for the Club World Cup with Juventus, but the Italian side is uncertain about making his move permanent, and there have been talks about extending the loan deal. Cummins: 'To go home winning the urn will be phenomenal – it's a final thing to tick off'

Despite the long tour, the Australia captain says he is in a better condition heading into The Oval this time compared to in 2019

The Ashes is secured, but there is a huge amount at stake for Australia at The Oval. Return home with a 3-1 series win, to go alongside the World Test Championship title, and legacies will be secured. Draw the series, from being 2-0 up, and it will be mission incomplete. Many of this Australian squad featured in the 2019 Ashes series, which ended 2-2 when England won at The Oval. That has gnawed away at them, particularly after they had responded impressively from the Ben Stokes miracle at Headingley to win at Old Trafford.Pat Cummins remembers the final game of that series as the only occasion he worried he would miss a Test through fatigue, although he still ended with five wickets and bowled the most of Australia’s quicks, having also played the ODI World Cup earlier. This time, he is under scrutiny both as bowler and as captain, having endured a tough few days in Manchester. But he insists he has the gas in the tank for one final push. You wouldn’t expect him to say anything different.Related

Warner quashes retirement rumour, eyes Ashes victory

“I remember turning up here in 2019 for the fifth Test and I was wrecked,” he said. “It’s probably the only time in my career where I thought I genuinely might not be able to play. But I still did a decent job then. And I feel in a much better position now.”So, for the second time in four years, Australia reach The Oval 2-1 up but via different routes and aiming to achieve what they have been unable to do since 2001. This time, they were perhaps two good sessions of cricket away from securing this series outright in Leeds. England were 142 for 7 at lunch on the second day, still 121 behind, and for all their love for a run chase there is a good chance that, had they conceded a hefty lead, the game would have gone.Instead, largely through Ben Stokes and Mark Wood, England cracked 95 off ten overs to draw almost level and then, later in the day with Australia’s lead approaching 100, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne handed their wickets to Moeen Ali. There were a few twists to come but that’s where the mood of this series shifted. At Old Trafford, Australia were outplayed in a manner that has rarely been seen in recent years – over an extended period, rather than a single crazy session such as the one that cost them in Delhi earlier this year. In Manchester, a lazy first-day batting display then became a rudderless performance in the field as Zak Crawley, Joe Root and latterly Jonny Bairstow made merry.Australia admitted how poor they were, but have also tried to play it down somewhat by saying they always expected it would come given how England play. When it did come, they did not have any answers. Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh ensured a touch of equilibrium was resorted on the fourth day, but only the rain saved them.It all means they come back to London, where this tour started at the beginning of last month with the World Test Championship final, needing a victory (or at least be in a strong position for one should weather intervene again) to honestly be able to leave knowing they were the better team.”It’s a big one,” Cummins said. “If we win this one and you look back, it’s been an incredible tour over here really. We’ve played five games, we’ve won three and only lost one. It’s already a fantastic tour. But to go home winning the urn would be phenomenal. It’s a final thing to tick off the list of titles to win for a few of the guys, who you never [know] if you’ll get another chance at it. We’ve said the whole time, our aim is to come here and win the Ashes and that’s the opportunity ahead of us.”As Cummins alluded to, it will be the last Ashes Test in England for a lot of this side. In fact, it probably marks the start of a transition for both teams: the youngest member of the England attack at Old Trafford was Wood at 33.”They’ve got world class bowlers in their attack,” David Warner said. “They’re all mid-30s, like myself, so it’s just great to see them keep coming. They probably don’t have much cricket left in them and it will be sad to see a lot of those guys leave and we have to applaud the way that they’ve kept coming year after year.”Pat Cummins and Alex Carey could be borderline names when Australia pick the team for their next Ashes series in England•Associated Press

For Australia, of those who have featured in the series, you can only say confidently, as much as is possible with the uncertainties of professional sport, that Labuschagne, Travis Head, Cameron Green and Todd Murphy will have the chance of returning in four years’ time. Marsh and Alex Carey (35 by then) are perhaps borderline names, as is Cummins himself who will be 34. The team will start disbanding as soon as the next home summer with Warner the first to depart, at the SCG against Pakistan in early January if he makes it that far.”We know we are an experienced team,” Cummins said. “But that means there are some people who are close to the end of their career. That means we’ll have to find some new guys, who I think it won’t be very hard to find, but no doubt the team’s going to change over time. Maybe it’s this moment, I don’t know.”While some are questioning how long Cummins will be able to marry the role of lead fast bowler and captain, he sees the upcoming changing of the guard as something exciting.”We’re very individualised in how we let everyone be themselves and do it their way,” he said. “Some of that’s down to the fact that we’ve got guys that have played 100 Test matches [and] 15 years of first-class cricket. If there’s new guys [coming] in maybe you need to shift that a little bit more. It’s exciting – that’s what I like about the job.”But before the future, comes the immediate challenge. Being crowned Test world champions was deserving reward for two years of excellent Test cricket, but coupling that with an Ashes series win in England – something that has passed by a number of very fine Australian players – is needed to ensure that this group of players has its place in history.

Arsenal now shortlist "sensational" £42m PL forward; Arteta's a big fan

Arsenal have now shortlisted a “sensational” Premier League forward for a potential transfer swoop, as they continue to gear up for a big summer transfer window.

Arteta set to bolster attacking options

Injuries have no doubt hindered Mikel Arteta’s side in their pursuit of the Premier League title, with Bukayo Saka’s spell on the sidelines arguably of the most significance, given a lack of depth in the squad.

Given that he has only just turned 18, Ethan Nwaneri has done a good job filling in for Saka, scoring three Premier League goals, but inexperience is not an ideal quality in a title race, as Arteta’s side have discovered in the past.

As such, Arteta is keen on bolstering his attacking options in the summer transfer window, with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha of interest at striker, while versatile Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman is also well-liked.

Both Cunha and Lookman have Premier League experience, as does another winger who has now emerged as a target, with a report from TEAMtalk revealing Arsenal have now shortlisted AFC Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo ahead of what could be a big summer transfer window.

Semenyo could potentially be targeted as a cheaper alternative to Bryan Mbeumo, given that he is valued at around £34-42m, while the Brentford star has an asking price of around £50m.

AFC Bournemouth's AntoineSemenyolooks on

However, there could be stiff competition for Semenyo’s signature this summer, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur also being linked with moves, given his impressive performances for a Bournemouth side pushing to qualify for Europe this season.

"Sensational" Semenyo may now be entering his prime

It has been a steady rise to the top for the Chelsea-born winger, spending time out on loan at the likes of Bath City and Newport County before impressing in the Championship with Bristol City and eventually working his way up to the Premier League.

There are signs the 25-year-old may now be entering his prime, as this season he has recorded his best numbers to date since signing for the Cherries, having regularly weighed in with goals and assists.

The Ghanaian, who Arteta is a big fan of, has been described as “sensational” by members of the media this season, and he is showing signs he could be ready to take yet another step-up in his career by moving to the Emirates Stadium.

That said, it could be wise to target Mbeumo as a priority, given that the Cameroon international has proven himself in the top flight over a longer period than Semenyo, and he has been in remarkable form this season, with 20 goal contributions to his name in the Premier League.
