“Players like Pant don’t grow on trees” – Ponting•BCCI
Rishabh Pant may be ruled out from playing in the upcoming IPL 2023, but Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting thinks the team’s official captain still has a role to play. Ponting wants Pant to be around the team during the season, if he has recovered well enough.”I want him sitting beside me in the dugout every day of the week,” Ponting told the ICC review. “If he’s actually not physically fit enough to play, we’d still love to have him around.”He’s the sort of cultural leader around the group, being the captain, and that attitude and infectious smile and laugh he has is what we all love so much about him.Related

“I’ll certainly be making sure, come the middle of March when we get together in Delhi and start our camps and stuff, if he’s able to be there, then I want him around the whole time.”Pant suffered injuries in a car crash on December 30 and is expected to be out of action for most of 2023. He tore three key ligaments in his knee, two of which were reconstructed on January 7, while surgery on the third is expected in February.Ponting also said that Capitals were searching for a wicketkeeper-batter to replace Pant, but stressed on how difficult that search could be.Who can replace Pant?At the December auction for IPL 2023, Capitals bought five players but no wicketkeeper. The only other full-time wicketkeeping option in their side is England’s Phil Salt, who is currently donning the gloves for Pretoria Capitals in SA20 in South Africa. Among Indians, Sarfaraz Khan has been a part-time wicketkeeper for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament.”You can’t replace those guys, simple as that,” Ponting said. “They don’t grow on trees, players like that. We’ve got to look at – and we already are – a replacement to come into the squad.”With the Pant-Ponting combination at the helm, Capitals finished fifth in IPL 2022 and lost in the second Qualifier in 2021. In 2020 they registered their best finish by being runners-up when Shreyas Iyer was captain. The 2023 edition is expected to start in March end – after the inaugural edition of the women’s IPL – and will run through the months of April and May.
Paul Stirling will join Ireland’s Test squad in Sri Lanka, and be available for selection for the second Test.Stirling, who went back to Ireland from Bangladesh after the white-ball leg of the series, and will miss the one-off Test starting on April 4, has become available for Test cricket following alterations in Ireland’s schedule. Stirling explained to the last week that he had opted to sit out of Ireland’s Test commitments this year to give himself a chance to rest amid a “jam-packed” 2023 schedule, but left scope for his plans to “change or evolve” in the way they now have.Ireland’s tour to Sri Lanka initially consisted of a Test and two ODIs, but the hosts’ attempt to get more red-ball experience led to the two ODIs being replaced by an extra Test. Both the Tests will be played in Galle between April 16 and 28.

“Paul was originally set to join the squad in Sri Lanka for the ODI series that was originally planned. However, with those fixtures now converted to a Test match, and the scheduled Bangladesh T20I series in Ireland postponed, he will now have a greater focus on red-ball cricket and will join the Test squad for that second Test,” Andrew White, Cricket Ireland’s national men’s selector, said in a statement.Stirling, who has played all three Tests Ireland have played to date – all in 2018 and 2019 – is one of Ireland’s busiest cricketers, playing in various short-format franchise leagues around the world.Stirling’s presence will certainly add a lot of experience to Ireland’s line up. For the Dhaka Test against Bangladesh, their squad has nine uncapped players, of whom three have never played first-class cricket. There are also only four survivors from their last Test.
Chelsea are one of the most ambitious clubs in the world both on and off the pitch, and they have no problem in looking to snatch talent from their rivals should the correct set of circumstances fall into place.
Chelsea have already started their latest recruitment drive
To the surprise of nobody within Premier League circles, Chelsea have already started their hunt for new stars this summer as Enzo Maresca looks to build a long-term dynasty at Stamford Bridge.
Earlier in the week, news broke that the Blues have agreed to sign Geovany Quenda from Sporting Clube de Portugal despite reports suggesting that a reunion with Ruben Amorim could be on the cards for the Portugal Under-21 talent.
Sporting CP's GeovanyQuendaduring the warm up before the match
Fabrizio Romano was the one to deliver confirmation of the story, but that is likely to be only the tip of the iceberg for what has become a relentless Chelsea project headed up by Todd Boehly. Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo is on Maresca’s wishlist after fitness concerns over Romeo Lavia have prompted the west Londoners to submit a significant bid for the Three Lions international.
Despite the Red Devils’ reluctance to sell one of their brightest talents, financial pressure may force their hand as Sir Jim Ratcliffe evaluates all revenue streams available to the club before drawing conclusions.

BlueCo also have designs on bringing Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham to Chelsea, so there is definitely a sense of awareness from the powers that be surrounding talent on English shores who may be available on the market. With that said, Maresca is said to have turned his attention towards another star who plays for a direct rival following interest in Mainoo.
Chelsea make surprise enquiry for Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate
According to TBR, Chelsea have enquired about Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate as he moves closer to the last year of his deal at Anfield, which runs out next summer.
Making an approach, the Blues are hoping to take advantage of the France international’s uncertain future on Merseyside, which is said to have become a ‘real concern’ after he rebuffed several offers to extend his contract at the end of 2024.

He has excelled in Liverpool’s title push, registering two goals and two assists in 33 appearances across all competitions this campaign under Arne Slot. Labelled a “monster” by Martin Mosnier, the 25-year-old has shown his robust nature with 109 duels won on Premier League duty in 2024/25.
Remaining coy on his future, it remains to be seen whether Konate would entertain the though of swapping Liverpool for London once the summer comes around.
Controversial career decisions always come with a mixed reception, even if they can often prove to be beneficial in the long run if performances live up to their on-field reputation. One thing is for certain, Chelsea are sparing no expense in their mission to restore themselves as England’s finest side over the next few years.
UAE also claim berth for the Zimbabwe event, which will decide who takes the two remaining open spots at the 2023 World Cup
Peter Della Penna04-Apr-2023USA are heading back to the World Cup Qualifier for the first time since it was known as the 2005 ICC Trophy in Ireland after securing a 25-run win over Jersey in their final round-robin match at the CWC Qualifier Play-off in Namibia.Defending a total of 231, USA fast bowler Ali Khan propelled his side to the ten-team qualifier in Zimbabwe later this summer with a blistering new-ball spell in which he claimed 5 for 7 in his first three overs – including three wickets in four balls in the sixth over – before coming back at the death to wipe out the tail, eventually finishing with 7 for 32 in 9.4 overs. They are the second-best figures for any Associate bowler – Rashid Khan took 7 for 18 against West Indies in Afghanistan’s final month as an Associate nation before being promoted to Test nation status a few weeks later in June 2017 – and are the seventh-best figures across all ODIs for any bowler.Prior to Tuesday, nobody had ever taken more than six wickets for USA at senior level in any format, with the previous best taken by Naseer Islam who claimed 6 for 33 in a loss to Bermuda in 2000. The win capped a 4-1 tournament for USA in Namibia, with their only loss coming against their border rivals Canada. Namibia’s win over Canada in Windhoek on Tuesday ensured that only UAE can equal USA at 4-1 in round-robin play, guaranteeing USA a top-two finish to advance to the qualifier in Zimbabwe later this year.USA had participated in every ICC Trophy tournament – the original name of the World Cup Qualifier – since its inception in 1979 all the way through to 2005. But following the 2005 edition, the USA Cricket Association (USACA) was suspended by the ICC for the first of three times over administrative issues. As part of the suspension, USA received a severe penalty being dropped down to Division Five of the newly formed World Cricket League, whereas the lowest position that any other team from the 2005 ICC Trophy wound up being reclassified into was WCL Division Three. It has taken USA 18 years to climb back up the Associate ladder, suspended twice more along the way andeventually expelled in 2017 before being readmitted as an Associate member of the ICC in 2019 under the new banner of USA Cricket. They secured ODI status in Namibia later that year.Elsewhere, UAE also secured a berth to Zimbabwe – despite having a bye on Tuesday – thanks to Namibia’s 111-run win over Canada. UAE currently sit at 3-1 and will play their final match of the tournament on Wednesday against Jersey. Namibia have finished their tournament 3-2 while Canada can move to 3-2 if they win their final match on Wednesday against Papua New Guinea. However, even if UAE lose to Jersey to end at 3-2, UAE own the initial tournament tiebreaker over Namibia and Canada having beaten both teams head-to-head. Wins in head-to-head matches supersede net run rate as a tiebreaker, which means UAE’s match against Jersey has effectively become a dead rubber.Aside from USA and UAE, the other Associate teams in the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe are Scotland, Oman and Nepal, who each qualified via a top-three finish in the World Cup League Two ODI competition which ran from 2019 through 2023. They will be joined by bottom five teams in the ODI Super League: Netherlands, Zimbabwe, West Indies, Sri Lanka and one of either South Africa or Ireland.South Africa currently sit in eighth place, but Ireland still have three ODIs remaining against Bangladesh scheduled for May. Should Ireland win all three, they would be level with South Africa on points in which case net run rate would serve as the tiebreaker to decide which team clinches an automatic berth to the 2023 World Cup and which team falls back into the qualifier in Zimbabwe.
Even though Celtic are a whopping 16 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, supporters worldwide will all be desperate for this side to beat fierce rivals Rangers in Sunday’s Glasgow derby.
Adam Idah
When they most recently met in January, Rangers demolished Celtic 3-0 at Ibrox, a repeat of the scoreline that went the way of the Hoops back in September.
Given that the Gers are without a manager, have lost two of their last three Premiership fixtures and were taken to extra time by Fenerbahçe on Thursday, you have to make Brendan Rodgers’ side overwhelming favourites to dish out some derby day revenge.
Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup
However, the home side could be without their most-important player, so does that redress the balance somewhat?
Callum McGregor's importance to Celtic
As reported by Ross Pilcher of the Daily Record, captain Callum McGregor is a doubt ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm due to a ‘calf injury’ suffered towards the end of last weekend’s Scottish Cup victory over Hibs.
The captain admitted he’d not been able to take part in group training this week, reduced to “individual work with the physios”, although he is still optimistic he’ll be available, adding that one always “wants to play in these games.”
However, should McGregor be sidelined, this would be a major blow given that, as noted by Kieran Devlin of the Athletic, he is Celtic’s ‘most important player’ due to his ‘tactical intelligence’, ‘leadership’ and ‘quality’.
If the Bhoys go on to complete the treble this season, the 31-year-old would become the club’s joint-most decorated player of all-time, joining Bobby Lennox with 25 major honours.
Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.
He has also become only the 14th player to reach 500 appearances for the club, with manager Rodgers describing him as “the beating heart of the team”.
So, how on earth do you go about replacing someone that important? Well, Celtic might just have the perfect player to fill the void.
Celtic's midfield maestro
As the saying goes, it’s important to always make a good first impression, and Reo Hatate certainly did that after arriving from Kawasaki Frontale for a reported fee of just £1.4m in January 2022.
On his debut against Hibernian, Hatate was named man of the match following a ‘captivating display’, leading to this hilarious clip of him finding out; having been taken off, he asked substitute James Forrest why his name had been announced over the tannoy, before being both pleasantly surprised and pleased to find out.
A week later, he scored a thunderbolt at Tynecastle, before netting twice as Celtic hammered Rangers 3-0 at Parkhead soon after, with Andrew Smith of the Scotsman noting the Japanese midfielder has been ‘central’ to Celtic’s success since his arrival.
Meantime, Declan McConville of Glasgow World labels him ‘exceptional’, former Hibs and Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart believes he is “top-class”, while his manager describes him as an “outstanding player”.
In total, Hatate has now made 133 appearances in hoops, scoring 23 goals and registering 24 assists, predominantly deployed as a number eight, but occasionally filling in deeper, most notably doing so against RB Leipzig in the Champions League when McGregor was nursing a knee injury.
So, let’s assess how the duo compare.

The table produces some very interesting statistics, highlighting the fundamental similarities, but also the key differences, between McGregor and Hatate.
Celtic's Reo Hatate
McGregor dictates the tempo, as noted by Mark Atkinson of the Scotsman, while Hatate operates higher up the park, hence why he’s recorded more assists and created more than three times as many big changes this season.
Nevertheless, the Japanese international compares favourably when it comes to touches per 90, pass completion percentage and defensive metrics, such as tackles, interceptions and, most of all, ball recoveries, underlining that he would be the natural choice to be deployed at the base of midfield, should McGregor be forced to sit out on Sunday’s derby.

Getty Images SportWHAT FORMER ROYAL BUTLER SAID
Former royal staffer Paul Burrell, who worked as Princess Diana’s butler, has told of Beckham’s bid to become a Sir: “We haven't seen [Beckham knighted] yet because A, he's not old enough and B, he hasn't earned his stripes yet and C, he's still in a very commercial world. David Beckham is everywhere. He's sponsoring and commercialising himself.
“Obviously, this is the end of his career. And once this phase is over, the commercial phase, and he goes back into charitable work, because you've seen him with William, you've seen him with the King… He's obviously been fast tracked for a knighthood, but not just yet and they're keeping him just dangling for a while. Because, you know, they're waiting to see what happens.
“I think he is an excellent ambassador, not only for charitable foundations, but for our country. I think he's shown his worth, and I'm expecting it. Of course it's going to happen. The question is, when. When will the King finally say it's time for David to receive his knighthood?
“I think he has to put some more work into the King's Trust, and I think he'll be seen many more times with the King and William before that honour comes his way. It's a much sought after honour, it's one that's eluded him, but it will come his way, he just has to be more patient. It's on its way. It’s not in the post yet, but it's on its way. His name is on the King’s desk!”
If Nottingham Forest secure Champions League football for next season it could be a very busy summer, and they already have their eyes on signing an £8 million forward who is bang in form, according to a new report.
Nottingham Forest’s head start on summer transfer plans
A lot of what the Reds want to do in the summer may depend on whether they secure Champions League football, but with the way they are playing, it is likely they will secure at least some sort of European qualification for next season.

That being the case, it could allow Nuno Santo to go into the transfer market and spend big, already having eyes on a few individuals. According to Takvim in Turkey, as relayed by Sports Witness, Forest have submitted an offer to sign Bright Osayi-Samuel on a free transfer.
The right-back is expected to leave Fenerbahçe at the end of the season, and the Reds have now submitted an offer that is being described as ‘serious’. However, they face competition from the likes of Crystal Palace and Leeds, who are also chasing the soon to be free agent.
As well as making an offer for Osayi-Samuel, Forest are monitoring Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi, who looks set to leave the Serie A champions at the end of this season. Nuno is on the lookout for a new midfielder, and Frattesi has emerged on his and Forest’s radar, but it could be a hefty purchase, as Inter want £35 million to part ways with the player.
Nottingham Forest eyeing move to sign £8m forward
Securing European football next season will mean the Reds also need to find better cover behind Chris Wood. According to Nottingham Forest News, Forest are also interested in signing Josh Sargent from Norwich City.
Norwich striker Josh Sargent.
The report states that the USA international is expected to leave Carrow Road in the summer if Premier League football isn’t secured, and the Reds are among the teams interested in a deal, with Evangelos Marinakis keen on signing a new striker for Nuno.
Graeme Bailey told Nottingham Forest News that the Premier League side have had scouts watching Sargent in action this season. “Forest, as we know from January, are looking to bolster their attacking options, and they are one of the clubs to have watched Josh Sargent. Forest are one of those clubs who have numerous targets, and much will depend on where they finish – if they’re in a Champions League spot, it could be that their ambitions and targets are somewhat different.”

Sargent, who cost the Canaries £8 million to sign back in 2021, has scored 11 goals in 21 Championship games this season but has been in sensational form in the last seven games for Norwich. The 25-year-old has scored seven goals in his last seven Championship games, with doubles coming against Swansea City and, most recently, Stoke City.
Sargent is under contract until 2028, so it is unclear how much the Canaries would want for a striker who has been clinical in the last two seasons.

Newcastle United are also interested in signing the attacking midfielder, who is said to be valued at £17 million. Nuno’s side will expect to have an edge in the race if they secure Champions League football for next season.
Nottingham Forest monitoring "big-name" £35m ace
As well as looking in Serie A for Saelemaekers, Nottingham Forest are also keeping a close eye on Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi, who looks set to leave the Italian champions, according to ESPN.
The report states that Forest look to be in the market for a new midfielder for next season, and Frattesi, who won Serie A last season, has emerged on their radar. The 25-year-old was signed for around £20 million, and it is believed that Inter are willing to let him leave San Siro for a fee of £35 million.
However, Forest are not alone in their pursuit, as it’s been reported that Tottenham Hotspur have already made a bid to Inter to sign Frattesi. The Italy international, who has been dubbed a “big-name” player in Simone Inzaghi’s squad, joined Inter first on loan from Sassuolo before joining on a permanent basis in July last year.

Since joining the Serie A champions, Frattesi has been a key player for Inzaghi, playing 42 times in all competitions last season. However, he only managed 11 starts in those games, and that has continued into this campaign, starting 10 of the 32 games he has played overall.
His lack of starts means Frattesi is also probably open to a move elsewhere, and Forest could represent a good opportunity, especially if they secure Champions League football. His potential arrival would see him compete with the likes of Elliot Anderson, Danilo, Nicolas Dominquez and Ryan Yates for a starting spot in that midfield two.
