Sussex rock-bottom as Derbyshire seal first win of season

Wickets shared around before Critchley seals short chase

ECB Reporters Network23-Sep-2021Derbyshire condemned Sussex to the wooden spoon in the LV= Insurance County Championship by claiming their first win of the season at Hove. After enforcing the follow-on with a lead of 165, Derbyshire bowled Sussex out for 187 to win by nine wickets with more than a day to spare. Sussex finished last of the 18 counties for the first time in 21 years. After being dismissed for 300 in the first innings, Sussex’s hopes of turning the game around disappeared in a three over spell after lunch when they lost three key wickets for eight runs, including skipper Tom Haines and Ben Brown, who made a third-ball duck after scoring 157 in the first innings.Haines and Ali Orr had put on 42 without alarm but Orr nibbled fatally at the second ball after lunch from Ed Moulton, who then bowled Brown when he unluckily dragged a wide long hop onto his middle stump later in the over. Haines, who was awarded his county cap at tea, took his aggregate for the season to 1176 and will finish as the country’s leading run-scorer, but on 26 he was run out by Matt Critchley’s throw from mid-wicket after being sent back by Harrison Ward.Ward was beaten by leg-spinner Critchley’s quicker ball and when Dustin Melton returned for a second spell to win lbw verdicts against Ibrahim and Oli Carter, Sussex still needed 49 runs to make Derbyshire bat again. Delray Rawlins counter-attacked with 58 off 46 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, as he made his highest score of the season before he was last out as Wayne Madsen and Anuj Dal wrapped up the tail.It left Derbyshire needing 23 to win and Matt Critchley, who was promoted up the order, hit the winning runs to reach 1,000 for the season.Earlier, Derbyshire had enforced the follow on for the first time since 2016. Brown added seven to his overnight 150 before edging Ben Aitchison to second slip. His five-hour innings of 190 balls contained 19 fours.Brown added 87 with Jack Carson for the seventh wicket and Carson finished 64 not out with ten fours. Sussex’s last three batsmen all fell for nought, although Sean Hunt hung around long enough to put on 25 with Carson to earn Sussex a third batting bonus point. It was the highest score in a first-class match when the innings contained six ducks, the previous record was the 295 made by Canterbury in 1922-23 on MCC’s tour of New Zealand.

Fans to return to the stadium in Zimbabwe during women's ODI series against Bangladesh

A total of 1000 fully vaccinated spectators to be allowed, and it will “serve as a trial run for the safe return of spectators to stadiums”

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Oct-2021A total of 1000 fully vaccinated spectators will be allowed at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo for the women’s ODI series between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in November. This will mark the first time since January 2020 that people will be allowed in for a cricket match in Zimbabwe; spectators last attended a cricket match in the country when Zimbabwe hosted the Sri Lanka men’s team for a two-Test series in Harare. The “exciting news”, as Zimbabwe Cricket called it, was confirmed after the relevant authorities in the country approved ZC’s application for the three games, scheduled for November 10, 12 and 15. A statement on the ZC website said that the exercise will “serve as a trial run for the safe return of spectators to stadiums”.”Only 1000 fans who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will be permitted to watch each of the matches in person and they will be required to produce their vaccination cards and positive identification for inspection at the venue,” the statement said. “The spectators will also be required to adhere to coronavirus protocols at the ground, including the obligation to wear face masks and observe physical distancing.”Givemore Makoni, the ZC managing director, said in the statement, “We have been missing the excitement and energy that fans bring to the game of cricket and we will be thrilled to safely welcome them for the first time in nearly two years as we host Bangladesh Women at Queens Sports Club in November.”As excitement builds ahead of that crucial series, we take this opportunity to encourage all cricket lovers to ensure that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order for them to be permitted into the ground.”The series between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh is going to be part of their preparations for the 50-over World Cup Qualifier, which will be played in Harare from November 21 to December 5 this year. That tournament will also feature West Indies, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and USA, with the top three teams making the cut for the global event, to be played in New Zealand in March-April 2022.

Rodgers must drop Trusty to unleash "aggressive" Celtic star

Celtic return to action in the Champions League this evening as they prepare to travel to Bergamo to take on Atalanta away from home in their third league game.

The Hoops are looking to bounce back from their last away day in Europe after they were hammered 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund in Germany in their second outing.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had beaten Slovan in their opening game at Parkhead, with a convincing 5-1 scoreline in Glasgow, before they were humbled by the Bundesliga giants, who raced to a 5-1 lead by half-time.

The Scottish Premiership champions will be hoping to offer a better account of themselves when they come up against the Serie A outfit tonight, whilst also putting in a strong performance than they did at the weekend.

On Saturday, Celtic were held to a 2-2 draw at Parkhead by Aberdeen, to keep the two sides locked on points at the top of the table, after going 2-0 up ahead of half-time.

They let their lead slip and must avoid those defensive frailties to be on show against the likes of Mateo Retegui, Ademola Lookman, and Charles De Ketelaere.

Celtic's top performers against Aberdeen

There were plenty of impressive performers on the pitch for the Hoops against the Dons on Saturday, though, and they should keep their places in the starting line-up.

One player who must stay in the team is centre-forward Kyogo after his impressive contributions during the first-half of the game against Aberdeen.

Firstly, the Japan international made a fantastic run down the right channel and played the perfect pass across the box for Hatate to find the back of the net.

Then, Kyogo pounced on a loose ball in the box, after a shot was deflected into his path, to find the bottom corner to make it 2-0 to the Hoops.

The scorer of the opening goal, Hatate, is another player who was a top performer on Saturday and should start tonight. He produced a fine finish to find the far corner from the striker’s cutback to open the scoring.

Along with his strike, the central midfielder won five of his seven duels and created two chances for his teammates, which shows that he was combative and creative in the middle of the park.

Rodgers must, however, make a change at the other end of the pitch by bringing centre-back Maik Nawrocki in for a rare start, after the disaster in Europe last time out.

The player who should be dropped for Maik Nawrocki

Celtic have been playing with two left-footed centre-backs – in Auston Trusty and Liam Scales – in recent weeks and this means that either of them could drop out to allow Nawrocki to play on the right side.

It should be Trusty, however, who is dropped back down to the bench by Rodgers, as Scales had partnered Cameron Carter-Vickers with success at the start of the season, keeping five clean sheets in five league games.

Whereas, the summer signing from Sheffield United has only helped to keep one clean sheet in his four starts for the club since Carter-Vickers’ injury.

Trusty, who was handed a player rating of 6/10 by The Scotsman, was part of the leaky defence that let in two goals against Aberdeen on Saturday, the second of which deflected off him and in after he turned away from the ball in a weak attempt to block the shot.

In his four appearances for Celtic, the American has been part of a team that has shipped ten goals – including seven in the heavy defeat to Dortmund.

The Hoops have let in three goals in his three starts in the Premiership, after zero goals in Carter-Vickers’ five starts, which suggests that the team was far more defensively secure with the former Tottenham man at the back.

Trusty has yet to prove that he has what it takes to be a key part of Rodgers’ team, given the team’s struggles defensively since his introduction to the side, and that is why he should be ruthlessly ditched from the starting XI for the clash with Atalanta tonight.

Therefore, with Carter-Vickers still missing from injury, the manager should turn to his other available central defender and unleash Nawrocki in his place.

Why Maik Nawrocki must be unleashed

The Polish colossus, who was once hailed as “aggressive” by Rodgers, has yet to start a game in any competition this season, but can offer a natural option on the right side of the defence, instead of having a left-footed player – in Trusty – attempting to play out on his weaker side.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The giant, signed from Legia Warsaw in the summer of 2023, is comfortable on either foot but is predominantly right-footed, which means that he can open up and play passes into midfield or down the line on the right with ease, which could allow Celtic to bypass the Atalanta press more efficiently than they would with a left-footer in that role.

Last season, Nawrocki did not make a single appearance in the Champions League for the Hoops last season, which could give him added motivation to make his mark if he is selected this evening.

The central defender won 78% of his duels across four appearances in the Europa League for Legia Warsaw in the 2021/22 campaign, which was his last attempt at competing on the continent, and this shows that the potential is there for him to be a dominant figure at the back.

Nawrocki only made ten appearances in the Premiership during his debut season with the Scottish giants last term, but did show signs of promise in that time.

As you can see in the table above, the Polish ace was incredibly dominant in his duels on the deck, winning 69% of his ground battles against Premiership attackers.

Nawrocki, however, has yet to be tested in the Champions League or the Premiership this season and it could, therefore, be a risk to bring him in from the start.

Trusty’s disappointing form, and the seven goal concession against Dortmund, suggests that there is not much to lose from the Hoops giving him a chance, in the absence of Carter-Vickers, and that is why Rodgers must take the plunge and hand him an opportunity.

Tahlia McGrath steers Australia to series win in tense chase

India fought hard to get to a competitive total and then with the ball, but Australia’s experience prevailed

Australia were given a mighty scare by a spirited Indian team before nerves and inexperience came in the way of a famous win. From the depths of 78 for 8 batting first, India found a way to take the game deep with Australia needing 24 off 16. Then in the space of six deliveries, they conceded four boundaries, with Tahlia McGrath, dropped on 5, remaining unbeaten on 42 to give Australia an unassailable 9-5 lead in the multi-format series. The series, though, has been much-tighter than that scoreline would suggest.Vlaeminck leaves her mark
Medium pacer Tayla Vlaeminck left a mark with both her speed and strikes. Touching close to 120kph consistently, her blows in first two overs stunned India. First, she had Smriti Mandhana chipping one to midwicket and then Shafali Verma heaving across the line to mid-on. She could have had a third in her third over had Ashleigh Gardner hung on to a tough chance. But Jemimah Rodrigues couldn’t capitalise on the reprieve, managing to add just one more before holing out to Hannah Darlington at mid-on. At 24 for 3 in the sixth over, India needed solidity.Harmanpreet shines amid a collapse
Harmanpreet Kaur found the boundaries almost immediately. She used Vlaeminck’s pace to flick her for back-to-back fours and then threw Ellyse Perry off her lengths by picking her for two more fours to signal signs of a counterattack. But in trying to play one big shot too many, Harmanpreet yorked herself against Georgia Wareham’s legspin to stall India’s recovery. She made 28. Then India handed two run outs on a platter, saw Richa Ghosh out bowled after a wild heave and then had a ripper of an off break from Gardner that spun viciously to crash into Shikha Pandey’s stumps. India had collapsed from 50 for 3 to 78 for 8.Vastrakar’s cameo
Strong bottom hand, powerful wrists and some muscle – Pooja Vastrakar used a fine cocktail of all these to pepper the boundaries at regular intervals with partners running out. She launched Nicola Carey straight over her head for a six, and then drove on the up nonchalantly over cover as a follow-up. Then with three balls to play out in the 19th, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, with a highest score of 5*, held her side of the bargain. This allowed Vastrakar to go after rookie Darlington, who was clubbed for 16 off the final over as India finished strongly on 118 for 9, having regained some momentum.Australia rocked early
Alyssa Healy was victim to a Shikha Pandey magic delivery that cleaned her up two balls into the innings. The ball swerved in a long way and then deviated a bit more after pitching to beat her inside edge and crash into the stumps. An advancing Beth Mooney, at the other end, was kept honest with some terrific outswing, surviving a peach that she nearly nicked. With Renuka Thakur, bowling for the first time in T20Is, also deadly accurate, Australia needed a release.Lanning, Perry fall to spin
In trying to do precisely this, Meg Lanning, who survived a series of miscues over the infield, fell to Gayakwad’s guile as she was stumped after being drawn out by the flight. In the next over, India had a slice of luck when Gardner smashed a Harmanpreet long hop to Gayakwad at point. Australia were 38 for 3 in the eighth over, with Perry having to revive the innings. But that didn’t materialise as she was brilliantly caught by Harmanpreet at extra cover to give Deepti Sharma her first wicket.McGrath’s costly reprieve
Fifty-five for five. India’s spinners choking Australia for runs, the asking rate touching seven. And Australia showing signs of cracking. Then Vastrakar drew a thick edge as McGrath slashed at a short ball. Part-time wicketkeeper Ghosh was moving down leg when she had to change directions; not even a full stretch could help her hang on. From agony, Ghosh was soon ecstatic as a full Gayakwad ball beat Carey’s defence to ricochet off her onto the stumps for a streaky stumping. But McGrath wasn’t giving up, picking the odd boundaries to take it down to 25 off the last three. Then India cracked as Wareham crashed two boundaries in a 11-run Pandey over. With 14 to defend, India went to Thakur, and her inexperience showed as McGrath clubbed her for back-to-back boundaries off the first two balls. The first a full toss hit over mid-off, the second a slower leg-cutter carved between cover and mid-off. Those four boundaries in the space of six deliveries swung the game decisively in Australia’s favour, McGrath seeing home the tense chase.

Man Utd watching "monster" £112k-p/w Barcelona star’s new contract talks

Manchester United are among the Premier League teams interested in signing a “monster” defender whose contract talks with his current club are yet to gather pace. The Red Devils ended their five-game winless run over the weekend as they came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford, a victory that slightly eases the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

Mourinho relishing chance to get Ten Hag sacked from Man Utd after update

It would be quite the story at Old Trafford.

ByBen Browning Oct 20, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

The stories around Old Trafford in the last week or so have been about the future of Ten Hag, and while they haven’t fully gone away, the Dutchman will hope Saturday’s win is the start of a turnaround in results.

Away from the future of Ten Hag, the Red Devils are continuing to be linked with potential new players for when January comes around. Last week, United were linked with a move for Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane as he continues talks over a new deal with the German side.

As well as Sane, the agents of PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani have reached out to United over a potential switch to Old Trafford. The forward looks set to leave the French side in the near future, as he’s struggled to make an impact in the French capital. Meanwhile, United are also looking to balance the books and are happy to part ways with Antony and sell him for just £40 million, perhaps with the view towards one of Sane or Kolo Muani coming in.

The transfer stories at Old Trafford do not stop there, as the Premier League side continue to keep an eye on a player they have had an interest in for a while.

Man Utd watching Ronald Araujo as his contract ends in 2026

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are interested in signing Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. The Red Devils, alongside Chelsea, are said to be monitoring the Uruguay international as he prepares for talks over a new deal at the Spanish side.

The 25-year-old has been at Barça since 2018, when he joined from Boston River, but he didn’t make his step-up into the first team until around 2020. Since then, Araujo has become a key player for Barça, playing 37 times in all competitions last season.

The defender has yet to play for Barcelona this season, as he continues to recover from an injury, but he is believed to be a firm part of the plans at the Nou Camp still. However, this report states that United and Chelsea are still keeping an eye on Araujo, who has been described in the past by BBC analyst Raj Chohan as an “athletic monster.”

The Red Devils are said to be prepared to make a move for Araujo if talks over a new contract at Barcelona do not progress. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has spoken publicly about trying to keep Araujo, but with his contract expiring in 2026, it means he will enter the final year of his contract next summer if no new deal is agreed, putting United on alert.

Araujo currently earns 134,615 euros a week at Barça, which is roughly £112,174, a figure that he would likely look to increase were he to move to United.

New Man Utd injury blow as £190,000-a-week player is now out for "weeks"

A “massive” Manchester United player is now expected to be out injured for a number of weeks, according to a fresh claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd dogged by injury problems

The Red Devils have made such a disappointing start to the season, with the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag understandably huge, considering his side are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.

In fairness to the Dutchman, he hasn’t always been helped by injury problems to various players, however, with United having to make do without a number of key figures throughout the campaign to date, not least long-term absentee Luke Shaw at left-back.

The likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are injury victims currently, with both withdrawing from their respective England and Argentina duties during the current international break. Meanwhile, exactly the same now applies to right-back Noussair Mazraoui, who won’t be representing Morocco over the next week or so because of a fitness issue.

Man Utd suffer fresh injury blow

Taking to X, Romano relayed the news that Harry Maguire will be out injured for Manchester United for a number of “weeks”, sharing the player’s comments:

Maguire may not be the long-term answer at the heart of United’s defence, considering he is now 31 years of age and not without his critics, but having him unavailable is still another undoubted blow for Ten Hag.

The Englishman hasn’t let the Red Devils down in recent weeks, scoring the vital equaliser away to Porto, as well as being picked ahead of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez against Aston Villa last weekend, and his manager at Old Trafford said of him last year:

“[Maguire] was playing a massive, massive game. A very good performance. He showed leadership and in and out of possession he was very good, so I’m very pleased with that performance from Harry.”

Maguire may remain behind De Ligt and Martinez in the pecking order when everyone is fit and firing, but there is a reason why Ten Hag opted for him over them at Villa, feeling his experience and character would be important in a must-not-lose clash.

"Safe pair of hands" now interested in taking over from Ten Hag at Man Utd

Oct 8, 2024

While a lack of quality and pace can arguably be aimed at the £190,000-a-week defender, his passion for United cannot be questioned, and supporters appreciate the effort he has put in ever since joining. For that reason, not having him as an option after the internationals is far from ideal, during a period in which mental fortitude is vitally important, both for the players and the manager.

West Brom star just had his worst game of the season vs Boro

West Bromwich Albion are now off the top of the Championship perch as Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough got the better of the Baggies at the Hawthorns by a solitary goal.

In truth, it wasn’t the most action-packed spectacle in the West Midlands, but Hayden Hackney would manage to coolly slot home a chance late on for the away side to be crowned slim 1-0 victors.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

There were many underperformers on the night from West Brom’s perspective, with two defeats now worryingly picked up on the spin for the early promotion chasers, after they had once set the pace for the division.

The main West Brom underperformers vs Boro

It was a very poor display from the attackers at Carlos Corberan’s disposal, with just one shot on target accumulated come the full-time whistle.

The likes of Jed Wallace and Karlan Grant were notably below-par down the wings, as the Baggies captain failed to create chances galore for his teammates with just 14 accurate passes registered, whilst Grant failed to complete a single dribble from four attempts.

Moreover, it was another weak showing from Darnell Furlong after his own goal away at Sheffield Wednesday – who is usually one of the first names on the Spaniard’s teamsheet – with the Baggies number two uncharacteristically sloppy on the ball by squandering possession a costly 16 times.

But, one performance, in particular, will have been heavily scrutinised under the microscope post-match more than others, as Josh Maja failed to ever spark into life.

Maja's performance vs Boro in numbers

It was a strangely wasteful performance from the ex-Fulham striker, who had this golden opportunity put on a plate for him by Alex Mowatt deep into the second 45 minutes, only for his connection to be all off.

Before Tuesday night’s game, Maja had seven goals in seven for the Baggies in league action, but struggled throughout in a bid to make it an unbelievable eight from eight against Carrick’s visitors.

It wasn’t just Maja’s ineffectiveness in front of goal that would make for grim reading when digging into his numbers post-match, with the 25-year-old also poor on the ball with possession lost 12 times across his flat 90 minutes on the pitch.

The Nigerian attacker was also weak when asserting himself into duels, away from those possession numbers, with only 40% of his duels successfully won on the night to truly cap off a dire individual showing leading the line for Corberan’s men.

It will be intriguing to see if the Baggies boss decides to drop Maja for West Brom’s next Championship clash this weekend against Millwall, with the former Huddersfield Town manager well aware that bold calls such as axing the usually potent centre-forward could get a reaction out of his troops, who have now surprisingly tasted defeat twice in quick succession.

Still, Corberan could also stick by the 25-year-old for the test of Neil Harris’ men on Saturday, with Maja leading the way for most goals scored in the division even after this quiet showing.

The last two games will have acted as a big wake-up call for the West Brom manager, as the Baggies now find themselves outside of the top two positions and bruised ahead of more challenging Championship clashes to come.

Liverpool marched into the Carabao Cup final after a 4-0 rout of Tottenham at Anfield on Thursday. The visitors, who lost 4-1 on aggregate, failed to register a single shot on target, whereas the hosts had 10. And after the match, former Reds defender Carragher tore into Spurs, saying, "When did Tottenham ever win a big game?"

He said on Sky Sports: "It was never in doubt before the game. It's Tottenham. When did Tottenham ever win a big game? When did Tottenham ever go anywhere and surprise you and win against the odds? The odds were massively in favour of Liverpool. They are at home at Anfield, they are the best team in the country and possibly in Europe right now. It is not just this Spurs team. They never shock you and do something out of the ordinary. I am trying to think of the last big game they won and I would probably have to go back to that Ajax game in the Champions League semi-final and they were very lucky. They got battered in most of the game."
