£120,000-a-week Tottenham player "certain" to leave; Levy wants to cash in

Having already shown the door to the likes of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, Tottenham Hotspur are set to get ruthless once more, showing the door to another player.

Tottenham transfer news

For a long time, it looked as though Spurs were prepared to enter the new season without a replacement for Harry Kane for the second campaign running, but the arrival of Dominic Solanke quickly eased those fears.

Saudi side eyeing late move for £70k-p/w Tottenham ace who wants to leave

He has a desire to quit N17 before August 30.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 22, 2024

The former Liverpool forward arrived from Bournemouth in a deal worth a reported £65m earlier this month. The Lilywhites will have to wait slightly longer to see his first home appearance, however, after he picked up an injury in Spurs' 1-1 draw against Leicester to open their season.

They could at least watch new signing Wilson Odobert make his Premier League debut for the club, though, not long after arriving from Championship side Burnley.

The same can't be said for one particular defender whose time at the club appears to be coming to an end in the next week. According to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Sergio Reguilon is "certain" to complete a move away from Spurs this month, as Daniel Levy looks to cash in amid interest from European giants Barcelona.

Into the final year of his contract, which sees the Spaniard earn a reported £120,000-a-week, Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a cut-price deal to sign the left-back.

Tottenham Hotspur'sSergioReguilonin action with Brighton & Hove Albion's Enock Mwepu

It must be said that an exit would suit all parties, with Reguilon's loan moves to Manchester United and Brentford last season indicating that Ange Postecoglou does not see a place for the former Real Madrid man in his side.

After cashing in on Reguilon, the Lilywhites may even use the money generated courtesy of his departure to seal a deal for AS Monaco's Vanderson, who they've been linked with in recent weeks.

Reguilon needs Tottenham exit

Earning a reported £120k-a-week, Spurs are right to show Reguilon the door this summer if he's not in Postecoglou's plans. Skipp, Emerson Royal and Hojberg suffered that fate and now the left-back looks to join them out the door to continue the Lilywhites' summer clear-out.

Those earlier exits have paved the way for the likes of Solanke, Archie Gray and Odobert to all arrive, representing Spurs' current sustainable business model, and Reguilon's departure will likely make room for more fresh faces. Into the final week of the summer transfer window, those in north London could yet be in for a busy few days.

Before anything, of course, Postecoglou will want to ensure that his side secure their first win of the Premier League campaign when Everton travel to north London in search of ticking off the same goal.

Without Solanke this weekend and perhaps Reguilon on a permanent basis, the Lilywhites have an early chance to prove any doubters wrong about their squad depth. Suffer defeat, however, and any rust shown against Leicester City will look more and more like weakness at Spurs.

Sky Sports: Celtic bid £6.5m to sign versatile ace, personal terms agreed

Celtic have made a bid worth more than £6m to sign a new midfielder who has already said yes to a Parkhead move.

Rodgers urges Celtic to splash the cash after selling O’Riley

The Hoops are set to be in for a frantic end to the transfer window, with Matt O’Riley’s big-money move to Brighton & Hove Albion finally going through. Brendan Rodgers’ side have made a perfect start to the Scottish Premiership campaign and are looking to add to their four signings so far – Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel.

With money seemingly there to spend after cashing in on O’Riley, Rodgers appeared to urge the club to splash the cash in the final days of the market.

“We can't be happy just to make our money and build our pot because the bottom line is on the pitch. That's the bottom line. The supporters, they pay the money. I look back to the Covid times here, the Celtic supporters sold the stadium out and they weren't allowed in it.

“So we have the duty to put the best team on the pitch. That's what we'll do and look to do. It's taken a bit longer than I would have liked. But if we can do it by Friday, strengthen the squad, we'll be in a really, really good place.

“The team is in a good place, mentally, tactically, how they're playing. But we want to strengthen and have that depth. It's taken a lot longer than I would have liked as the football manager. That's my brutally honest answer on it. But I will repeat this. If we get them in, then there's still a long season ahead. So it's important that we do get that. And I have belief that we will do.”

Now, it looks like they are willing to do just that.

Celtic make £6.5m bid for Arne Engels – Sky Sports

Celtic have been pushing to sign FC Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels and according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the two parties have already agreed on personal terms ahead of a move to Glasgow.

Now, according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, a £6.5m offer has been made to Augsburg for Engels, although Plettenberg recently claimed he is valued at up to £10m.

The 20-year-old has picked up 30 caps for Belgium's youth sides across four different age groups and appears to be going from strength to strength at Augsburg, with his Transfermarkt valuation rocketing to a career-high €9m in May.

Arne Engels for Augsburg.

Engels would offer Rodgers and Celtic a versatile option as, despite being a central midfielder primarily, can also turn out as a right midfielder or as a right-back, and by the looks of things, he could be on his way to Scotland before the deadline.

Ollie Pope puts quad injury down to relentless Vitality Blast schedule

He suffered a quadriceps tear during a run of five T20 games in the space of eight days

Matt Roller01-Aug-2021Ollie Pope remains a fitness doubt for England’s first Test against India at Trent Bridge, which starts on Thursday, and has suggested that Surrey’s relentless Vitality Blast schedule was to blame for his injury.Pope suffered a grade three quadriceps tear during a run of five T20 games in the space of eight days during Surrey’s T20 Blast group stage run-in, immediately after a period of self-isolation after he was a close contact of someone who tested positive for Covid-19.The injury ruled him out of their last two Blast games, two County Championship fixtures – meaning he has not played a first-class game since the second Test against New Zealand in early June – and the early stages of the Hundred, and a decision is yet to be made about his availability for the first India Test.Related

Ollie Pope to miss four Surrey Blast fixtures

“I’ve been hitting a lot of balls just trying to get as much running as I can done as possible and I guess in a day or two a decision will be made,” Pope said on Sunday. “I’m hopeful, but I guess it’s up to physios and management to manage the risk of it.”At the time it was a grade three tear, but I think it looked worse on the scan because I played a couple of T20s on it – after I’d done it – so the swelling was worse than a grade three. Then it’s just about how I’m sprinting – I’m feeling it a little bit but nothing major. It’s just trying to make sure if I did play this one there’s not going to be issues for the next four if selected.”Pope is used to spending long periods out injured following lengthy lay-offs with two shoulder injuries over the last two years, and admitted that it was “frustrating” to have missed so much cricket.”I think the shoulder ones are even more frustrating because there’s not a lot you can do: you give 100% in the field and suddenly you’re left with two shoulder operations,” he said. “I guess this is a more short-term one. It is frustrating, especially when you’re missing games because I just want to play the whole time.”With the schedule, I think we played five T20s in seven [eight] days after I had to do 10 days sitting on the couch isolating as a close contact. Going from 10 days on a couch to five games in seven days is always going to provide a little risk. It is frustrating but hopefully I’ll sort this quad out and that’s the end of it.”As English cricket, the county set-up plays a lot more cricket than any other. I was speaking with Kyle Jamieson, the New Zealander, and they don’t play anywhere near as many games there, especially in that little T20 period. It is a lot of cricket but if it is possible, you’ve just got to try and manage it as best you can.”Ollie Pope: ‘I’ve been hitting a lot of balls just trying to get as much running as I can done as possible’•Getty ImagesPope made a brilliant 135 not out against South Africa in January 2020 to reinforce his status as English cricket’s most promising young batter, but has struggled for runs in Test cricket since, averaging 25.17 with only two fifties since the start of last summer. His county form has remained impressive, with 555 Championship runs at 61.66 this season, but his technique – and in particular his off-stump guard – have come under scrutiny from analysts and pundits.”You’ve got to get used to it,” he said. “When I was first playing, you looked at how I got out and people would say I should stand a little further across and it would help me leave that fifth-stump ball. Then you stand a little further across and get hit on the pad once and suddenly you’re standing too far across.”It’s an interesting one. You’ve got to be pretty stubborn as a cricketer in this environment. You’ve got to work out what’s best for you against these specific bowlers in these conditions and work with your coaches and who knows you best rather than guys who have seen you bat on TV two or three times.”With that technique that I use, I think I average 60-odd for Surrey this year batting like that against international bowlers, so there’s obviously some sort of use behind it as well. Everyone has got their opinions which is absolutely fine, but you’ve got to know your game better than everyone else.”As long as your balance is good, if you can cover that off stump with your eyes level, it helps you leave that fifth-stump ball. Especially in England where the ball does swing and nip around, you need to do what you can to cover one side of the bat. Hence why a lot of the best players of the world, when they come over, that’s where they stand in Test cricket.”Pope admitted that the absence of Ben Stokes – who is spending an indefinite period of time away from the game to focus on his mental wellbeing – represented “a blow” for England, but said that the team supported his decision to miss the India series.”Stokesy is one of, if not the, best allrounder in the world so you’re always going to miss him if he’s not playing,” he said. “But we’re well behind him with that decision and I wish him to be the best he can as soon as he can.”We, as a nation, and the world, look at Stokesy as a real macho fighter character – and he is. But this is a reminder and shows how mentally straining cricket and sport at the highest level can be, and the situation of being in a bubble away from the family does make that tougher.”We all support him 100 percent and would love to get him back as soon as we can, but I think mental health is much more important than a game.”

Maresca could be about to start Chelsea’s amazing 18 y/o Cobham star

Chelsea are… good. It’s happened, confusing plot points have converged under Enzo Maresca’s wing to look like a force in the making.

Chelsea alighted in east London on Saturday and made mincemeat of struggling West Ham United, with Nicolas Jackson scoring twice inside 20 minutes and Cole Palmer sealing the victory with a swept finish after good work from his striker, who now has four goals and two assists across five Premier League matches.

Nicolas Jackson scores for Chelsea

It’s been a fine start to the season that has put to bed any grumbles around the decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Pochettino steadied the ship somewhat but Stamford Bridge now has its project manager ready to lead Chelsea to glory once again. The transfer strategy under Todd Boehly and Co has seen a remarkable influx of talent but Maresca is wrapping such players up and igniting the talent at their core.

Maresca’s clearly worth his salt, capable of making shrewd tactical substitutions to cool off games or add in an injection of energy at the right time, and he expects to make sweeping changes for this evening’s fixture against Barrow in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea team news

Maresca is going to shuffle the pack with vigour. The most notable appearance expected against Barrow is that of Ben Chilwell, who is going to be in the matchday squad for the first time in 2024/25.

The left-back was among those pushed toward the exit this summer, told he had no place in the Italian head coach’s plans, but he remained at Stamford Bridge and could now earn a chance to impress.

Youngsters Carney Chukwuemeka and Tyrique George are going to be in the matchday squad too, with summer signings Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all hoping for starting roles in the Carabao Cup.

Pedro-Neto-Chelsea

Malo Gusto is set to return to the squad after missing the past three matches in all competitions. With Reece James’ interminable injury woes dragging further through the dirt, it would be prudent not to throw Gusto back in too deep, and, with that in mind, Joshua Acheampong might be in line for a surprise start.

Why Chelsea should unleash Joshua Acheampong

Acheampong, 18, has risen through the ranks at the Cobham Academy and could now be ready to earn regular appearances for the Chelsea first team.

The Blues have fielded Axel Disasi and Wesley Fofana in makeshift right-back roles across the past few weeks to combat the injury situation, but Acheampong could now grasp the opportunity to make a real impact in his natural position, and perhaps make it his own under Maresca’s leadership.

He also has a natural attacking prowess that makes a telling comment about his multi-functionality and capacity to succeed on the major stage. Of course, defending is still his bread and butter: against Tottenham Hotspur in May, Chelsea hung on to win 2-0 and owe much to Acheampong’s performance, short but significant.

Indeed, he expertly blocked three shots and staved off any brewing threat of a last-gasp comeback. It was three days before his 18th birthday, so quite the time to make your top-flight debut and indeed impress.

Acheampong has graced the field on the senior stage just once so far, coming on for the last five minutes against Spurs in the Premier League last year. Now, he might be ready to return, allowing Maresca’s team to enjoy a natural pick on the defensive right flank.

As you can see, he’s positionally flexible, though does tend to stick to the right flank. Last season, across all competitions and at various youth levels, the teenager made 18 appearances (on top of his senior showing), building a good amount of experience that suggests he could thrive against Barrow.

Maresca was recently quizzed on whether he would include Acheampong in the starting line-up any time soon, though was coy and spoke of ‘moderating’ the emphasis heaped on talented youngsters still sat in their fledgeling phase.

Still, Chelsea don’t have a fit and natural right-back available at the moment and this could be the perfect opportunity for a teenage talent to make his mark. Barrow, with all due respect, should be comprehensively defeated later.

That said, Stephen Clemence’s side are table toppers and full of confidence. Strange things have happened in such contests.

Balance and fluency will be key. Journalist and youth scout Antonio Mango has compiled a report on the 18-year-old, praising his pace and relentless running and aggressive and combative approach to defensive play that allows him to dispossess opponents and protect his keeper’s backline.

Therefore, this would be the perfect opportunity to hand Acheampong a maiden starting berth as a professional. No disrespect to Barrow, but there’s a good chance that they could be the team of the lowest station that Chelsea compete against this year.

Acheampong is bound to feature alongside a wealth of more experienced stars, should he indeed start, and thus he could be the perfect option – perhaps if he impresses, he will even hand Maresca an exciting new option amid an injury-affected right-back area.

Leeds now eyeing move for "fantastic" £2m manager to replace Daniel Farke

Leeds United are believed to be eyeing a “fantastic” manager to replace Daniel Farke in the Elland Road hot seat, should he be relieved of his duties.

Farke under pressure despite Leeds win

It hasn’t necessarily been the most convincing start to the season by the Whites, who went into the campaign as one of the favourites to earn promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

A 3-3 draw at home to newly-promoted Portsmouth was a disappointing way to start the campaign and Leeds’ performances and results have been unpredictable ever since, with a 1-0 defeat against Burnley at Elland Road last weekend the worst league result so far.

It has led to pressure mounting on Farke’s shoulders, with the 47-year-old arguably not getting the most out of a talented squad, even though he was hit by the summer exits of key figures such as Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter.

On Saturday, the manager had a positive day at the office, with Leeds winning 2-0 away to Cardiff City. It was a much-needed result for all concerned, not least the manager himself, and three points means the Whites are into sixth in the table and in the playoff positions. Despite this, Farke’s job appears to be far from safe though, following a new update.

Leeds eyeing "fantastic" manager to replace Farke

According to a big claim from The Sunday Mirror [via MOT Leeds News], Leeds, and by extension owners the 49ers Enterprises, are eyeing a move to replace Farke with Carlos Corberan, should the former be sacked in the near future. The Whites boss is under “big pressure” to keep his job and the West Brom manager is “highly regarded” at Elland Road.

There are “suggestions” that Corberan has a release clause of £2m at The Hawthorns currently, having guided the Baggies to the top of the Championship table.

Farke is rightly under a huge amount of pressure, with the overall season not good enough so far, even though sixth place is far from a disaster currently. This is a squad more than capable of being in the automatic promotion places at the end of the season, and if the German can’t get the best out of it, Corberan stands out as a brilliant option to do just that.

The 41-year-old has impressed so much as West Brom, getting into the playoffs last season and now ensuring they sit top of the pile after six matches, and Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe has waxed lyrical over him, calling him a “fantastic figure” with great “attention to detail”.

This is a ringing endorsement for Corberan, showing what kind of manager Leeds would be getting, and many fans may arguably love to see him take charge in place of Farke immediately due to his previous ties to Marcelo Bielsa. The next few weeks feel crucial, but it should be stressed that there is no guarantee that Corberan would leave West Brom, appearing happy there currently.

100 touches, 96% pass rate: Farke could boldly drop 6/10 Leeds star

Lord's clamps down on alcohol at the Hundred for family-friendly atmosphere

Members of the public will not be allowed to bring alcohol into Lord’s for the rest of the Hundred in an attempt to create a family-friendly atmosphere following feedback from the first two matchdays at the ground.According to MCC’s ground regulations, fans are allowed to bring in “small quantities of alcohol” – either a bottle of wine or champagne, two cans or bottles of beer or cider, or two cans of premixed aperitifs – to games at Lord’s.But that right has been waived for the rest of the tournament, starting with Sunday’s fixtures between London Spirit and Southern Brave – though MCC members will still be allowed to bring alcohol into the ground. A cap of two alcoholic drinks per transaction has also been introduced, and all public bars will close at the start of the run chase in the men’s match.Ticket-holders for Thursday night’s fixtures against Trent Rockets were told via email that “following feedback from last night’s match, we have agreed to change some of the policies around alcohol at Lord’s”.”The Hundred is a tournament designed for families and children and we hope these measures will allow everyone who comes to the Home of Cricket to feel welcome, safe and have a great day out,” the email said. “Cricket is a game for all and we want the next generation of cricket fans to love and be inspired by the sport.”MCC has already stripped back its stringent dress code within the pavilion during Hundred matchdays, removing the stipulation for members and their guests to wear collared shirts, jackets or blazers, tailored trousers and formal shoes.
