'Quite clever' – de Kock gets pat on the back from Bavuma for Fakhar run-out

Fakhar Zaman took responsibility for his run-out in the second ODI in Johannesburg on Sunday, saying it was “my own fault”. However, Temba Bavuma, the South Africa captain, appeared to suggest that the gesticulating on the part of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, which seemed to distract Zaman, was a deliberate act after all, calling it “quite clever”.The Pakistan opener’s brilliant innings ended on 193, off the first ball of the final over of the match, when a direct hit from Aiden Markram from long-off caught him short of the crease at the striker’s end. However, there was a question mark surrounding the legality of the dismissal, because de Kock was moving his arms about, possibly indicating that the throw from Markram might be going to the non-striker’s end. He might, equally possibly, have been trying to communicate something to his team-mates. In the event, Zaman slowed down considerably, even turned around to look at the non-striker’s end and was caught short.”You’ve always got to look for ways especially when things are not going your way, got to find ways to turn the momentum around. Quinny did that,” Bavuma said after the game. “I don’t think he broke the rules in any kind of way. It was a clever piece of cricket.”Maybe some people might criticise it for maybe not being in the spirit of the game. But it was an important wicket for us. Zaman was getting close to our target. Yeah, it was clever from Quinny.”If de Kock’s gesture was a deliberate misdirection – as Bavuma might have suggested there – it was in contravention of the laws of the game, because Law 41.5.1 states: “it is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball”.

Before that ball, Pakistan needed an unlikely 31 from six balls. They went on to lose by 17 runs, but if de Kock’s act had been deemed illegal, Pakistan would have been allowed the two runs they attempted as well as five penalty runs, and the ball would have to be re-bowled, leaving them with 24 to get from six balls.Zaman, though, chose not to blame de Kock. “The fault was mine as I was too busy looking out for Haris Rauf at the other end as I felt he’d started off a little late from his crease, so I thought he was in trouble,” he said. “The rest is up to the match referee, but I don’t think it’s Quinton’s fault.”The conciliatory remarks might go some way towards taking the scrutiny off the umpires, who appeared not to see anything untoward in de Kock’s actions. It wasn’t the only point of contention towards the closing stages of the match. In the 47th over, Bavuma dropped a chance from Zaman, only for the ball to touch his hat, which had fallen off. The umpires didn’t award any penalty runs, which is in line with the law (28.2.2), which states that it is “not illegal fielding if the ball in play makes contact with a piece of clothing, equipment or any other object which has accidentally fallen from the fielder’s person”.

There is plenty of speculation to suggest that such a move could be on the cards, with one England international running down his current contract. As things stand, Alexander-Arnold is set to become a free agent in 2025 – meaning that he can talk to teams outside of the Premier League from January.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alexander-Arnold is a Merseyside native and product of Liverpool’s fabled academy system, with close to 330 appearances taken in for his boyhood club. He will forever boast strong emotional ties to the Reds, but professional ones may be severed when approaching an important crossroads in his career.

  • WHAT HESKEY SAID

Quizzed on whether a fresh start in Spain is looking more likely, with Three Lions colleague Bellingham already at Santiago Bernabeu, ex-Liverpool striker Emile Heskey – speaking in association with – told GOAL: “Possibly, yeah. We have seen it before – we obviously saw it with [Steve] McManaman, running down his contract and then going there.

“The big thing when you have the two coming out of Spain [Real Madrid and Barcelona], when they are attached to players, players’ minds will always wander and drift – regardless of which club you are at, in any other league. He’s got his mate there as well. He will probably be looking at that as something he could definitely see himself doing.”

    DID YOU KNOW?

Alexander-Arnold has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with Liverpool – with another domestic crown in his sights this season. Pressed further on whether a new challenge holds greater appeal after achieving just about everything at Anfield, Heskey added: “One hundred per cent. When you’re a player, my situation was different but similar – you get to a point, I was at Leicester and we’d got to three cup finals in four years and you say to yourself ‘what’s next, where’s the next step?’ For me it was going to Liverpool and trying to challenge for the title.

“He’s at the other end of it saying: ‘I’ve done this, I’ve done that, I’m 26 years old and what’s next? Do I stick it out here, on course to win another league title, but what’s next?’ That’s what he is probably looking at. He could be a megastar in Spain and win more. I’d be surprised if he’s not thinking about Ballon d’Or as well.”

Imagine him & Engels: Celtic lining up last-gasp swoop for £4m star

Celtic have less than 48 hours to complete the remainder of their business in the summer transfer window, as the deadline is set to pass on Friday night.

The Hoops have made five additions to their first-team squad so far, with Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Kasper Schmeichel, and Viljami Sinisalo signing permanently, alongside a loan swoop for Alex Valle.

Brendan Rodgers' side has also been dealt a blow as central midfielder Matt O'Riley completed a move to Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Scottish Premiership giants are now looking to bolster their options in the middle of the park, with last-gasp swoops for new midfielders this week.

Celtic eyeing late deal for midfield ace

According to Football Scotland, Celtic are lining up a late move for FC Lausanne-Sport central midfielder Alvyn Sanches to compete with the likes of Callum McGregor, Paulo Bernardo, and Reo Hatate.

The report adds that the club's pursuit of Augsburg ace Arne Engels is separate to their interest in the Swiss gem, as they view the Belgian talent as a replacement for O'Riley, whilst Sanches would come in as competition across the midfield.

It reveals that he is rated at £4m and that a deal to take him to Scotland is now on the table, as they look to spend the money they raked in from Brighton.

The outlet states that the Hoops are hoping to bring in two new midfielders before the deadline, which means that Sanches and Engels could both come in as fresh recruits for Rodgers.

Imagine Alvyn Sanches and Arne Engels

At 21 and 20 respectively, Celtic could secure the future of their midfield by completing these two days before the end of the summer transfer window.

Firstly, Engels could come in to provide a creative presence in the middle of the park. In the 2022/23 and 2023/24 Bundesliga campaigns, the 20-year-old star produced five assists in 31 starts.

He ranked within the top 26% of midfielders in the division for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.14) and the top 19% for assists per 90 (0.18) in the 2022/23 season, which speaks to his impressive creativity at such a young age in a major European league.

As you can see in the table above, Sanches could come in and offer a goal threat from midfield, after a return of five goals in 25 Super League games last term, despite only starting 19 times.

The 21-year-old gem, who was dubbed "highly-rated" by journalist Charlie Gordon, has also made 3.3 tackles and interceptions combined per match across four league games this season, which shows that he can make an impact in and out of possession.

These statistics suggest that Sanches and Engels could complement each other well in midfield, as the former can offer defensive strength and a goal threat, whilst the latter can be the maestro tasked with unlocking opposition defences with his creative quality.

Chelsea now want £13m Premier League defender who Arteta called "very good"

Chelsea chiefs now want a Premier League defender, who Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has publicly praised, with Todd Boehly and BlueCo already continuing transfer plans despite a very eventful summer window.

Chelsea spend nearly £300 million on 13 summer signings

The Blues spent close to £300 million (£271 million) on 13 new summer signings, with Joao Felix, Mike Penders, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho all making the move to Stamford Bridge.

They were successful with one deadline day transfer, though, as Sancho joined Chelsea on loan at the eleventh hour. Their deal for the English winger includes an option to buy him next summer, set at around £20-£25 million, and it will be interesting to see if the Man United outcast can resurrect his career in west London.

Chelsea were also linked with a last-gasp move to sign a centre-back, with Benfica starlet Tomas Araujo entering their radar late in the window. It was rumoured that Enzo Maresca wanted another centre-half to replace Trevoh Chalobah, but given the latter's switch to Crystal Palace came in rather last-minute fashion, there was little time for a transfer to be done.

January could represent an opportunity to rectify that and provide Maresca with another astute option for his backline. There could be a few solid options available to them mid-season and when the winter window opens, including Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior.

Chelsea now interested in Jakub Kiwior

According to journalist Graeme Bailey and The Boot Room, Kiwior is considering an Arsenal exit in January, having pledged to help Arteta's side until the winter – where he will then ponder his options.

The former Spezia starlet, who commanded a £13 million price tag in the summer, made 20 Premier League appearances under Arteta last season – bagging three assists as a makeshift left-back, but centre-half is his natural position.

Chelsea are believed to be interested in signing Kiwior as they look at bringing in another central defender, as are other top-flight sides, so this could be worth monitoring heading into January.

“Very good!”, said Arteta on Kiwior and his versatility.

"Especially because obviously he had not a lot of moments before. We had some injuries, and we are asking him to play in a position that he hasn't played, and he's adapting very fast and his performances, they've been really consistent.

“And that's why you need the players that when you call on them, they step in and they get the job done.”

Rangers now in talks for Clement target who Mike Ashley once bid £10m for

Rangers have begun talks to sign a defender that Mike Ashley once tried to sign for Newcastle United, according to a new report.

Pressure is very much on Philippe Clement and Rangers this season, as there is an expectation that the club puts up a stronger fight this time around when it comes to competing with arch rivals Celtic. The Gers fell away late last season, and to avoid a repeat of that, Clement and the Rangers board have been busy in the transfer market, making sure they have a squad good enough to compete on all fronts.

As the 11 p.m. deadline on Friday approaches, Rangers can safely say they have been busy, as they have so far added eight players to their squad. But given how well Celtic have started the new season, Rangers may still be in the market for one or two additions to give them the best chance of success.

It has been reported in recent days that Rangers could be looking into a deal to sign Pyramids FC winger Ibrahim Adel, who has just impressed with his national team Egypt in the Olympic Games. The Scottish side are said to be very keen on the player, and they would be willing to spend as much as £5 million to sign the winger, but they do face competition from the likes of Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

As well as looking at Adel, Rangers were also said to be interested in a possible deal for Troyes defender Jackson Porozo, who spent last season on loan at Turkish side Kasimpasa. The report states that the Gers made contact with the French side over a possible deal, but it wasn’t a situation that was ongoing, with the demands “not suitable” for Rangers, and the defender instead joined Leganes.

Therefore, Rangers are still in the market for a new defender, and it appears as though their search has taken them to a player who was once wanted by former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who of course held a rather unpopular 8.92% stake at Ibrox too between the years of 2014 and 2017.

Rangers in talks to sign Philippe Clement target

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Rangers are in talks to sign Hoffenheim defender Stanley N'Soki. The report states that the defender could well leave the German side in this transfer window, with a loan move being looked at.

N’Soki is contracted to the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2027, and Clement, who managed the defender at Brugge, would personally like to bring the central defender to Ibrox in what remains of this transfer window.

The report states that talks have begun and have been ongoing in recent hours, as Rangers look to strengthen their defensive line. Rangers fans might not be aware of N’Soki, but he has appeared on the radar of Newcastle United before, as in 2018 Ashley made a bid worth £10 million to sign N’Soki for the Magpies, but in the end the deal failed to materialise. However, a few years on, and he could now be heading for that move to the UK.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Human rights organisations have spoken out in protest against the tournament going to Saudi Arabia, with fears for the safety of migrant workers as well as LGBTQ+ supporters. However, the FA has explained its reasons behind the vote following discussions with the Saudi Football Federation.

  • WHAT THE FA SAID

"After a careful review of both proposals, we supported the two World Cup bids – from Spain/Portugal/Morocco in 2030, and Saudi Arabia in 2034. Both bids are technically strong and meet the FIFA criteria to host the Men’s World Cup. Our focus is on ensuring that all our fans can attend and enjoy tournaments," a statement from the FA read.

"The FA Board met the Saudi Arabian Football Federation last month to discuss their bid in more detail. We asked them to commit to ensuring all fans would be safe and welcome in Saudi Arabia in 2034 – including LGBTQ+ fans. They assured us that they are fully committed to providing a safe and welcome environment for all fans.

"Football is a global game, and is for everyone. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion means being respectful of all, including all religions and cultures. We also believe that hosting World Cups can be a catalyst for positive change, which is best delivered by working collaboratively in partnership with host nations. We will work with FIFA and UEFA to ensure that commitments to respect all human rights are delivered."

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) will conduct a replacement draft for the six teams at 8pm local time on Tuesday to complete their squads ahead of the resumption of the 2021 edition of the tournament, which had been suspended after 14 matches following a spate of Covid-19 cases among players and support staffers. The remainder of the tournament will be played in June, with all matches in Karachi, in a bio-security bubble being put in place by a UK-based company. The teams will assemble by May 23 to begin their mandatory seven-day quarantine, and action will resume on June 2, with the final on June 20.Most of the overseas players, who were around for the first set of games before the postponement, are going to be missing for one reason or another. Start of Pakistan's tour to England delayed to make room for PSL

PCB sets June 7 as tentative start date for PSL

George Dobell01-Jun-2021 • Updated on 03-Jun-2021The ECB has agreed to delay the start of Pakistan’s tour of England to accommodate the PSL.The PCB announced that Pakistan, who were originally scheduled to arrive in England on June 23, will now land on June 25. There will be no change in the dates of the matches with the first game of the tour, an ODI in Cardiff, set to be played on July 8.With the PSL now scheduled to be completed in the UAE on June 24 – and aiming for a June 7 start – the arrangement will allow those players in the Pakistan touring party to compete in the final matches of the tournament. The turnaround will be tight. With the UAE – and Pakistan – on the UK’s red list, the tourists will be expected to quarantine for 10 days* after their arrival. While they are expected to be allowed to train in that period, it will provide little time between their official release from quarantine and the start of the tour. As things stand, there are 13 days between the Pakistan squad’s arrival and the first ODI in Cardiff. With every passing day, the available window to host the remainder of the PSL continues to shrink, especially with Pakistan originally due to fly to England on June 22. The PCB had proposed shortening the tournament to fit it within the available window but ESPNcricinfo understands all six franchises were opposed to the idea of reducing the number of fixtures. A shorter tournament would have a commercial impact, as various agreements between the league, the franchises and all commercial partners had been made on the basis of 20 games remaining. On Monday, the start of the PSL was hit by another roadblock when 16 members of the production crew member were moved from their hotel in Abu Dhabi by the Abu Dhabi government and shifted to Dubai. This threw another spanner in the works, with the league unable to start until the production crew completes its mandatory quarantine period. For now, it remains the PCB’s intention to begin the tournament by June 7, subject to exemptions granted by the UAE’s National Crisis & Emergency Management Authority (NCEMA). The PCB said NCEMA will decide on Wednesday whether to grant an exemption to the production crew that sees them leave isolation on June 5. The seven-day isolation period for players and staff who arrived in the on UAE on chartered flights from Pakistan will also end on Wednesday afternoon.(Additional reporting by Umar Farooq)

Alexander-Arnold's future remains the subject of speculation as the England international is into the final year of his current contract at Liverpool and yet to agree a renewal. Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing the 26-year-old on a free transfer at the end of the season, but it's still not known if he will continue on Merseyside or look for a new challenge away from the club.

Liverpool are currently enjoying a stellar season under new manager Slot. The Reds are top of the Premier League table and in first place in the Champions League standings with a perfect record after six matches. Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson feels that if Alexander-Arnold can win the Premier League for the second time with Liverpool he will extend his contract.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

He told BetFred: “If Liverpool win the Premier League, then I believe he will stay. I don’t think he wants to leave and I don’t think Liverpool want him to leave, but the longer this goes on, then the less likely that he will stay. He’s going to be at Liverpool or Real Madrid next season. I don’t believe he’ll go anywhere else and I don’t believe any other club can compete with them two. If Liverpool win the league, then I think he’ll stay.”
