  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Weah's Copa America ended prematurely when he was sent off in the US' shock 2-1 loss to Panama, and the Juventus man could only watch from the sidelines as their 1-0 defeat to Uruguay ended their tournament without reaching the knockout stages. Now, the 24-year-old has visited Ghana as he tries to move on from this difficult episode.

  • WHAT TIMOTHY WEAH SAID

In an Instagram story, Weah posted a black screen with the location Accra, Ghana, and then the words: 'Resources + Rejuvenation, Family time."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Weah's costly red card against Panama could have ended up being the difference between Gregg Berhalter's side falling in the group stages and making the quarter-finals of the Copa America. The US' early exit is not a good sign, especially as they hosted the tournament – plus, this is not a good dress rehearsal for the 2026 World Cup, much of which will be played in their country.

Weah, who apologised for his red card last week, will have a break and then return for pre-season training for Juventus in the coming weeks. He may feature for the US again in their next friendly match against Canada in September.

Bairstow leads England to opening warm-up win

Jonny Bairstow wants to use the T20I series against New Zealand as a route back into Test cricket, after his omission following a lean summer, and he has started the tour with an unbeaten 78 off 45 balls as England XI chased down 173 with 11 balls to spare at Lincoln. After a somewhat ragged and rusty display in the field on a blustery day – which included four dropped catches, three off Pat Brown – England slipped to 51 for 3 in the chase. Lockie Ferguson, returning to action after a broken thumb, removed Tom Banton, who struck his second ball for six, James Vince and Joe Denly to sit with 3 for 8 off two overs.Bairstow and newly promoted vice-captain Sam Billings then steadied things with a stand of 61 with Sam Curran then helping close out the chase with 28 off 15 balls, including the winning six. Ferguson’s figures were damaged when his last over was taken for 21. Captain Eoin Morgan opted to give others a hit as he slid down the order.”I’m on this tour to naturally score as many runs as possible,” said Bairstow. “That’s what’s going to be the key to winning games of cricket.”Selection is gone now. I’ve got some things to work on, I’m working very hard and I’m really enjoying that challenge.”Morgan had opted to bowl with a new-look attack feature Brown and Saqib Mahmood. It was the more experienced Chris Jordan who struck first and then Adil Rashid claimed a wicket with his fourth delivery in his first match since the World Cup final. However, the New Zealand XI put the visitors under pressure with Anton Devcich and Anaru Kitchen striking enterprising half-centuries off 35 and 36 balls respectively as they benefited from England’s poor catching. Having suffered the most with three drops, Brown managed to claim his first wicket off his final delivery when Christian Leopard was caught in the deep.Josh Clarkson gave the innings a strong finish by sending Mahmood, who was guilty of two of the missed chances, for sixes off the last two deliveries.

Wolves could unleash teen Fraser partner who has a "bit of everything"

Wolverhampton Wanderers could book their place in the last four of the FA Cup for the first time since the 2018/19 season with victory over Championship side, Coventry City later today, with Gary O'Neil's men no doubt desperate to secure a return to Wembley.

The Old Gold go into the meeting with Mark Robins' side in positive mood having won four of their last five games in all competitions, notably seeing off Brighton and Hove Albion in the previous round of the competition courtesy of a narrow 1-0 victory.

The Premier League outfit will no doubt be the firm favourites to continue their recent momentum with a victory this afternoon, although the club's mounting injury list has certainly provided O'Neil with an unwanted headache, with it yet to be seen just what enforced or tactical changes the Englishman will make to his side.

With the recent triumph over Fulham in the top flight having come at a cost, the former AFC Bournemouth boss will be scrambling around to find potential solutions, particularly in the attacking ranks, ensuring that it could well be a welcome chance for the club's emerging talent to prove their worth…

Wolves team news

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, O'Neil was rather coy regarding the fitness of his charges, having opted against providing any injury updates despite the obvious intrigue as to who will be fit to feature today.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

The club's latest 2-1 win over the Cottagers saw both Pedro Neto and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde forced off with injury early in the first half, with it yet to be seen if the pair will be able to make an immediate return to action at Molineux.

With Hwang Hee-chan also currently sidelined, the only fit senior attacker at O'Neil's disposal at present is experienced Spaniard, Pablo Sarabia, albeit with Wolves having been buoyed by the news that Matheus Cunha has returned to training this week.

Whether the Brazilian – who has been absent with a hamstring injury since the defeat to Brentford last month – will be ready to start or even come off the bench against Coventry is another matter, however, ensuring it could be a chance to unleash the likes of Leon Chiwome to bolster the attacking ranks.

Leon Chiwome's Wolves youth record

Rather than rushing Cunha – who has scored 11 goals this season across all fronts – back into the fray too swiftly, it may be wise for O'Neil to put his faith in the club's academy talents, having only recently handed promising striker Nathan Fraser his first senior start last weekend.

The 19-year-old marksman – who has been dubbed "incredibly hard working and honest" by his manager – acquitted himself well against Marco Silva's men having provided one key pass on the day, although O'Neil has admitted that he is coming back from injury and so it remains to be seen whether he will start again this afternoon.

Wolves could unleash “impressive” academy star to ease Neto’s injury

Gary O’Neil has a huge attacking dilemma to solve.

To help aid the Republic of Ireland youth international, the Old Gold could support him in attack by promoting another teenage sensation in the form of Chiwome, with the 18-year-old having been named on the bench last time out.

Formerly on the books at AFC Wimbledon, the exciting striker made the move to the Midlands in the summer of 2022, having since scored six goals in just 12 games for the club's U18s, as well as netting a further three times in 15 U21 outings.

While not prolific – partly due to missing much of 2023 with injury – there is seemingly a real buzz surrounding Chiwome among those at Wolves, with head of UK academy recruitment, Harry Hooman, hailing his attributes after Chiwome signed his first professional contract last year:

"He’s the profile of the number nine we wanted to bring into the club and they’re not easy to come by. We feel he can do a little bit of everything – he’s got athleticism and pace to run in behind, he scores goals, can lead the line and is also good with his back to goal to bring others into play. His physical attributes really stood out when we watched him as well."

A player with a 'bit of everything', Chiwome could work nicely in tandem with Fraser to help ease the goalscoring burden, with the absences of the likes of Neto, Hwang, Bellegarde and even Cunha potentially opening the door to a first opportunity for the teen diamond.

Spurs must bin forgotten player who’s worse than Sessegnon

It's been a season of ups and downs for Tottenham Hotspur but form is starting to settle and the pursuit of Champions League qualification might just bear fruit.

That eventuality looked nailed-on in the early phase of the campaign, with new manager Ange Postecoglou breathing fresh life into the outfit and firing Spurs into the ascendancy.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Winter arrived and with it furious bleak clouds, a spate of injuries and suspensions sending Tottenham's Premier League progress into a nosedive; a lapse in fluency bringing title aspirations down to hopes of a top-four finish.

Now, with the campaign approaching the business end, Tottenham have been impressive and perch in fifth place, having closed the gap to three points on Aston Villa in fourth after an emphatic 4-0 win at Villa Park one week ago – and with a game still in hand.

Precise recruitment in the transfer market has been the centre of Tottenham's success, with Postecoglou's project marrying into Daniel Levy's system, but there will need to be further accuracy on that front if any promise from the 2023/24 campaign is to turn into the milk and honey of lasting success.

Tottenham have done a good job of shipping out the deadwood so far, with the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier some of the high-profile names cast away.

Some peripheral players still need to leave, with Ryan Sessegnon's time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium surely running out.

Why Spurs signed Ryan Sessegnon

Having enjoyed something of a prodigious start to life on the senior stage with Fulham, Sessegnon signed for Tottenham in a £25m deal back in 2019, when he was just 19 years old.

The dynamic wideman, competent in any left-sided role, was remarked to be "one of the bright sparks" during Tottenham's 2019/20 campaign, his first at the club, but while he was young and lively he was also inexperienced and unrefined and so made just four starting appearances in the Premier League, albeit scoring in a 3-1 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich.

Unfortunately, nearly five years after transferring to Tottenham the 23-year-old has completed just 57 fixtures for the club, with injuries and poor performances punctuating a once-promising career that has bitterly stagnated.

He's out of contract next summer and there is a sense that his Spurs career is at its end, especially given that he played just one match for the first team in 2023/24, coming off the bench against Burnley in the FA Cup third round in January.

Sessegnon's woes have of course been compounded by the injury issues that have derailed a promising start to life, having scored two goals and provided six assists during the 2018/19 Premier League season, his last with Fulham.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Sessegnon.

But there's no denying that he has flattered to deceive, with Spurs insider Jon Wenham even remarking that he looks like a "Championship player" when he does muster up enough fitness to grace the pitch.

That said, an endless recurrence of a hamstring problem such as Sessegnon has suffered would stifle even the most talented Premier League stars, and for this reason, he can't be considered in the same breath as some other recent Tottenham duds.

One such flop is Sergio Reguilon, who hasn't played for Spurs in nearly two years but remains on the books and must be axed to continue the revival under Postecoglou.

Why Sergio Reguilon has flopped at Spurs

Wenham has recently described Reguilon as "chaotic" after revealing that Levy is bound to make a "huge loss" on the Spaniard, who is currently marked with a paltry £5m worth, according to Football Transfers' valuation model.

Serge Reguilon in action for Tottenham.

This feeling of disappointment would not be so profound were the 27-year-old not at the centre of a £32m outlay, signing from Real Madrid with a weight of expectation in 2020 after being named the La Liga's best left-back in 2019/20 while on loan with Sevilla, winning the Europa League.

No doubt, he does have his qualities. Reguilon ranks among the top 7% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles and the top 5% for blocks per 90, as per FBref, but it's been some time since he played in a Tottenham shirt competitively.

Indeed, after two years plying his trade for Tottenham, Reguilon completed a loan move back to his homeland and joined Atletico Madrid, though this was a woeful sojourn that provided him with a series of injuries and just two starts in La Liga.

Wenham – seemingly a vocal critic of this ace – has also remarked that he is the "worst of the bunch" when discussing the transfer activity under Jose Mourinho's management.

Not accounting for his £53k-per-week wages across the past two seasons, which might even have been covered by Tottenham, at least partially, Reguilon has bled the club over £37m, when combining his earnings across those first two years with his transfer fee.

Sessegnon is still relatively young and has been beset with a torrent of fitness problems, and while it hasn't been plain sailing on the injury front for Reguilon by any stretch, he cost more money and has had ample time to establish himself as a star down N17.

With Destiny Udogie performing so well in a Tottenham shirt, it's hardly likely that Reguilon will reclaim his place in the side any time soon, even if he is averaging 2.3 tackles per game in the Premier League this season (having spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Manchester United, switching for Brentford in January), as per Sofascore, also winning 58% of his duels.

Having signed a five-year contract in 2020, Reguilon is seemingly out of contract in 2025, and it's highly unlikely that his deal will be renewed.

Liverpool’s 4/10 ace was saved by Nunez in last-gasp Forest win

Despite an avalanche of injuries and absences to key players across every department, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool keep on churning toward a stunning end to the season, with Darwin Nunez scoring at the death to preserve his side's position at the top of the Premier League.

It was not a trademark display from the visitors away at Nottingham Forest, but then can they be blamed after a relentless recent schedule that has seen players drop like flies? Teenagers such as Bobby Clark and Jayden Danns have been instrumental in maintaining the first-class form.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

But it was club-record signing Nunez who popped up off the bench – returning from an injury that has ruled him out of the past three fixtures – to send the travelling Reds into rapture.

Darwin Nunez's stunning return vs Forest

Liverpool needed a hero and who else but Nunez should step up to score when his side needed him most? Criticised and chastised and chided by many, the Uruguayan centre-forward has taken his seasonal tally up to 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, with 17 direct contributions from just 16 starts in the Premier League.

Absent for the past several matches, the seemingly indomitable Reds kept clinching results through a Herculean collective effort but the former Benfica man's return has demonstrated just how important he is for Klopp's side, offering a singular set of skills that could prove the difference in the title race.

Cody Gakpo started up front, as he has done with regularity recently, and while the Netherlands international has played an important role this season, versatile and boasting a healthy return of 11 goals and five assists in all competitions, he will now be concerned for his starting berth from now on following an ineffective display.

Why Cody Gakpo must be benched after Forest struggle

The Netherlands international has been a reliable utility man this season but with Nunez now back, he might find his name tethered to the bench more often.

As per Sofascore, Gakpo played 84 minutes at the City Ground and missed two good opportunities, failing with his one dribble attempt, taking just 33 touches and winning only one (or 12%) of his eight contested duels, hardly producing the strong display to convince Klopp that he should remain a starting regular.

Gakpo did improve after the break after moving onto the right wing, but he squandered two chances and failed to make it all click, with This Is Anfield's Mark Delgado particularly disappointed by his meek effort, handing him a 4/10 match rating.

He said: 'One or two moments of good link-up play but his two most notable contributions were to nick the ball off Van Dijk from a corner and to misplace a header back into the box when played in by Alexis. Second half was pure and desperately poor, though.

'Was a non-entity for long stretches at a time then wasted one of the only clear chances we fashioned, blazing wild and wide with two in the centre waiting for a pass.'

Liverpool just keep on going and while Gakpo didn't enjoy his finest hour, Liverpool's injury list has been trimmed and now there is a palpable sense that the Anfield side are moving inexorably toward a grand slam finish to the campaign.

Dermot Desmond eyeing specific top Celtic signing after new transfer update

Celtic have identified a priority signing during the summer transfer window, as Dermot Desmond looks to oversee more important business.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops have been linked with plenty of potential new signings of late, as the club look to bolster the squad, regardless of what happens in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Desmond is reportedly keen on bringing in a new striker in the summer, with Celtic even willing to set aside "huge funds" to bring in a top-quality player to lead the line. Liel Abada's exit to MLS side Charlotte FC has heightened the need to bring in attacking reinforcements.

Celtic striker Adam Idah in action for the Republic of Ireland.

There is also the potential for Adam Idah's loan move to become a permanent one at the end of the current campaign, although his situation appears to be a little unclear at the moment. That's because Mark Lawwell didn't include an option for Celtic to buy the striker in his contract at Parkhead, having arrived on loan from Norwich City in January.

FC Twente left-back Gijs Smal is another player who has been backed to seal a move to the Hoops in the coming month, having been compared to AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini in the past, which is incredible praise.

Whatever happens this summer, it certainly looks as though the Hoops have identified their attack as a primary area of focus, and now a new update has emerged.

Celtic's priority summer target revealed

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Celtic have made a new winger in the summer window a top priority, following the recent exit of Abada. They are keen to "fill the void" that the 22-year-old has left "as quickly as possible" come the end of the season, ensuring they look healthy in attacking areas.

Liel Abada

While no specific player is mentioned in the update, it is encouraging to see Desmond clearly sanctioning moves for attacking stars, given the aforementioned report about a new striker also arriving at Parkhead.

This is a crucial period in Celtic's recent future, at a time when rivals Rangers are threatening to become more of a force again, and the Hoops cannot afford to let their high standards drop.

Brendan Rodgers is far from secure in his job, with a new claim suggesting that those high up at the club don't see him as the long-term answer as manager – he will likely have to win the league in order to stay in the job – and it is imperative that funds continue to be available to strengthen the squad.

Reporter drops “huge” Celtic transfer plan involving marquee striker

Dermot Desmond is not messing around.

If Celtic can pip Rangers to title glory, though, keeping Rodgers on as manager in the process, and then sign both a winger and a striker, it could only enhance their hopes of more success moving forward, adding some much-needed firepower to a squad not littered with goals this season.

'I have to be ready when I get my chance' – Umesh Yadav

Umesh Yadav came into India’s XI as a fifth bowler, but with match figures of 6 for 59 ensured the match practice he got with India A after requesting the selectors, paid off

Catches like Saha’s boost the team – Umesh

Umesh Yadav bowled more overs in Test cricket than any other Indian fast bowler in 2016 and 2017. Since then, though, he has slipped to fourth – or even fifth – sometimes in India’s pace pecking order, and had featured in only five of their last 18 matches before the Pune Test against South Africa. It can be difficult for a fast bowler to stay positive, and keep himself in rhythm in times like this, but that’s exactly what Yadav has sought to do.”This is part and parcel [of the game], it will keep happening as long as I play cricket,” he said after picking up match figures of 6 for 59 in India’s innings win. “These situations will keep coming, and I know I have to be ready when I get my chance. For that, it’s important to stay positive, keep playing the game, and stay focused.Watch cricket on ESPN+

“So, I always make sure I keep getting match practice, whether it’s Ranji Trophy or India A or anything else. These are the things that give me positivity, and my focus remains sharp because the more matches you play, the more match practice you have, which is very important, because as much as you may bowl in the nets, it’s different when you play matches, and know how you’re supposed to bowl, what planning you need to do.”These things (selection) aren’t in my hands. I can’t say, ‘no, I need to play every Test match’. All the bowlers are good, all of them are doing well, and there’s healthy competition. Whoever does well will keep playing. At some stage, each of us will get chances, and when that happens, I need to be ready, positive, and focused.”ALSO READ: ‘We’re not going to take the foot off the gas in the third Test’ – KohliYadav wasn’t originally part of India’s squad for this series, and only came in when Jasprit Bumrah suffered a stress fracture. He was part of India’s previous squad, in the West Indies, but didn’t feature in either of the Tests. With the knowledge that he wouldn’t get regular games for India, especially since he is not usually part of the ODI and T20I squads either, he requested the selectors, during the West Indies tour, that they pick him for India A as often as possible.”In the West Indies, when I was not playing, the selectors picked me [in the India A team that was concurrently touring the region],” Yadav said. “I knew I wasn’t getting that many matches, even in the T20s and one-dayers that were happening in between. So there was a gap, and I had told the selectors that I’d like to play whenever possible for India A because match practice for me is very important.Umesh Yadav and Virat Kohli celebrate a wicket•BCCI

“At that stage it was a fully off-season for me because there was no Ranji Trophy, no one-dayers, nothing. So, I asked them [to pick me], and told them I wanted to play matches, and they said, ‘Okay’. If you’re playing matches, your mindset and planning and focus remain sharp.”Suddenly, if you’re just practising at home or wherever, and you have to directly play a match, it becomes difficult, because as a fast bowler you’re out of the game. Bowling in a match and bowling in the nets are very different.”Before the Pune Test, therefore, Yadav kept himself in rhythm by playing four multi-day matches against international opposition, two of them first-class. The rhythm showed in the way he troubled South Africa’s top order in both innings, running in with intensity and swinging the new ball at pace. India enforced the follow-on after taking a first-innings lead of 326, and Yadav said he was only too happy to bowl again.ALSO READ: The fast bowler’s snarl ft. Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav”From my point of view, I felt, I don’t know about the others, but I need to bowl,” he said. “All bowlers said that we are ready if follow-on is enforced as we didn’t feel the need to rest. The intent was to win, and not, ‘Let’s bat a bit and stretch the game’.”The wicket wasn’t difficult to bat on. Fast bowlers didn’t have much help as there was no seam or swing movement. The ball only swung for a few overs. There was no pace off the pitch and you needed to hit the deck. If we get some breakthroughs with new ball, it becomes easier for the spinners.”Yadav came into India’s XI as a fifth bowler, and he was pleased that the selection had worked as planned.”We had to bowl with 100% effort,” he said. “There was bounce, but the pitch lacked pace. We had to hit the deck hard to extract the pace.”If you bowl long spells, you will get tired quickly and if you have five bowlers, you have options. We could come in, bowl [spells of] three overs with full intensity, and then the spinners would come in. I think this (playing five bowlers) was a good idea, and we could execute it as we had planned.”

Wayne Rooney told he's heading straight for Championship relegation with Plymouth after Birmingham disaster by ex-England team-mate because of 'dangerous combination'

Wayne Rooney is doomed to suffer relegation from the Championship in his first season as Plymouth manager, says a former England international.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rooney, though, did not impress during his previous spell in the Championship, as he was sacked by Birmingham after just 15 games in charge, having won just two of those. It was Birmingham who finished a point behind Plymouth to ensure Rooney's new team managed to stay up.

Former Tottenham defender Caulker believes that the ex-Manchester United star's recent managerial record combined with Plymouth's small budget is a recipe for disaster and is sure Plymouth will go down next year.

  • WHAT CAULKER SAID

"I just think with Wayne Rooney coming in there as manager, it's a difficult job for anyone there as a manager having one of the smallest budgets in the league," Caulker told . "But I think Rooney is going to be under pressure from the start, obviously after two not so successful spells in his previous jobs. So I think that's a fairly dangerous combination. It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out and I'll have Oxford as well, who are newly promoted. I can see them potentially struggling this year. And then again, let's see, that third spot for me is the most beautiful thing about the Championship, it's wide open. There'll be about 8 points between 10th in the league and 18th in the league until about April. It always seems to be the way. So that's what makes it so competitive and so good to watch. Yeah, I'm going to give you two again."

Rooney, who won an 80-man race to land the Plymouth job, has said he does not want to go down as "the next Gary Neville" as he hopes for a vast improvement to his managerial record with Plymouth. His team will begin their pre-season friendlies with a game against Orlando Pirates this week.
