Romeo Lavia Latest: Man United Eyeing Surprise Move

Manchester United are thought to be eyeing a possible surprise move for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia ahead of both Liverpool and Chelsea.

Who is signing Romeo Lavia?

The Red Devils have been relatively busy so far this summer ahead of the 2023/24 season, with Mason Mount and Andre Onana already making the move to Old Trafford from Chelsea and Inter Milan respectively.

However, Erik ten Hag appears to be on the hunt for more additions ahead of his second year in charge, and it looks as if Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund will be the next big-money arrival.

A €70m fee has been agreed between the two clubs, with the player already agreeing a five-year deal. Hojlund has even undergone a medical and is poised to complete the relative paperwork on Wednesday ahead of an official announcement.

After the Denmark international, there could be more work to be done in midfield, with United and Ten Hag seemingly after a further addition to potentially play alongside Mount.

Reports have claimed that Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is close to joining the club and reuniting with Ten Hag in the process, however, it appears as if the Red Devils also have their eye on Lavia, a player who has been heavily in demand over recent weeks.

The Daily Mail shared a transfer update in the last 48 hours and touched on the race to sign Lavia, with Southampton expecting a big week. They said that Liverpool, following the sales of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson will make an improved bid, something which has now happened, whereas Chelsea have maintained contact as well.

However, the report adds that ‘a foreign club and Manchester United are the surprise elements still in the mix’. It is believed that the Red Devils would need to sell first before making a move of their own, whereas Amrabat is a cheaper option at around £25m.

Who could leave Man United?

It appears as if the Red Devils may need to sell before making any further summer signings, and at the start of the window, the club reportedly put 13 players up for sale.

Donny van de Beek, Fred and Scott McTominay were the three central midfielders who could end up departing, with those at Old Trafford valuing them at £20m, £20m and £40m respectively. Van de Beek has been linked with a move to Real Sociedad, Fred a switch to Fulham and McTominay at West Ham, however, they are all still on the books in Manchester.

Should one or two depart, it could open the door for the club to make a move for Lavia, dubbed a defensive midfield “monster” by journalist Benjy Nurick. However, with Chelsea and Liverpool both keen, it could mean that United don’t have the time to make their move, so may end up going for Amrabat.

It is good to see that Old Trafford officials aren’t looking to stop after the eventually secure Hojlund’s services, so they may well be active in the market right up until the September 1 deadline in regards to both incomings and outgoings.

Liverpool "have come back in" with a Lavia bid yet to be reported on

There seems to have been another development invloving Liverpool and Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, according to Ben Jacobs.

The Belgian is the Reds top transfer target at this point in the window.

What is the latest news regarding Romeo Lavia?

The midfielder looks to be edging closer to a St Mary's exit this summer.

The player didn't feature in the Saints opening Championship game, instead being an unused substitute as the South Coast side beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1, whilst the Belgian international wasn't a part of the squad that lost 3-1 to Gillingham in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The player is a key target of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, who are light in the defensive midfield department after selling both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Al Ettifaq and Al Ittihad respectively, leaving the side with just young Stefan Bajcetic for the position, who is currently recovering from a major injury that not only ended his 2022/23 season prematurely, but has also forced him to miss every single one of the Reds pre-season outings.

Southampton central midfielder Romeo Lavia.

According to journalist Paul Joyce, the Reds have submitted three offers for the midfielder this window; the first one being £34m plus £4m add ons, the second being £41m and the third being £45m. All the offers were rejected by the Championship side as they hold out for their £50m asking price they set at the beginning of the summer, which they believe that the Reds will meet eventually according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Liverpool have reportedly been unwilling to match that asking price throughout the summer, and are considering alternative targets, with one such target being Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade.

Speaking to Redmen TV, journalist Jacobs revealed that his understanding is that the Reds have submitted their fourth improved offer, with it "very known now" that Lavia wants to make the switch to Anfield this summer.

He said: "My understanding is that perhaps the media cycle has been a little bit behind on this one which is normal when you have a rejected bid, it tends to suffice and sometimes there is an assumption that the bid went in at the same time as the rejection, and my understanding is that since that third rejected bid, Liverpool have come back in with an improved offer, and naturally because the feeling is that Lavia and 50 million will do the deal and the rejected bid was at 45, there's obviously not much more needed if Liverpool want to get this one over the line, and if they meet the valuation that Southampton are looking for, it is very well known that Lavia wants the move."

Would Lavia be the right signing for Liverpool?

Lavia would be a really strong pickup for the Merseyside club.

Throughout pre-season, Liverpool have employed a similar system to the one the side used in the final games of last season, and have added two new midfielders in the forms of Alexis Mac Allister arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion for a fee in the region of £35m and Dominik Szoboszlai from German outfit RB Leipzig for a fee in the region of £60m. As it stands, only a left-sided defensive midfielder to partner Trent Alexander-Arnold is needed, with the club playing multiple players in that role throughout the past month, and that is where Lavia would shine.

The 19-year-old would most likely be tasked with being the defensive stalwart for Liverpool which would allow their more attack-minded players the opportunity to get forward and showcase their talents, and that aspect of his game is something he excels at.

Twitter user @SawkurGod posted a graph showcasing the U24 best duel winners in the Premier League last season, and Lavia ranked with some elite company at the very top alongside Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, both players who could command fees in excess of £100m this summer according to reports.

Being Liverpool's starting defensive midfielder could be a lot of pressure on the Belgian, however, he showed last season that he can perform at a high Premier League level in his 29 league appearances, earning praise from legendary Premier League midfielder Paul Scholes, who stated: "I think he is a player with so much potential and he could potentially go back, but he has settled in so well. He has got a pass in his locker and he is big and strong and likes to defend."

'I'm a human being, I'm bound to make mistakes' – Mushfiqur Rahim

Bangladesh’s captain said he hasn’t thought about stepping down because he doesn’t believe it’s his decision to make, adding that he should be given more opportunities precisely because he made mistakes

Firdose Moonda in Bloemfontein08-Oct-2017Mushfiqur Rahim is hurting. Physically, after a Duanne Olivier bouncer that crashed into his helmet and emotionally, after copping the blame for Bangladesh’s worst Test defeat to South Africa and overall limp showing in the series.Despite the pain, Mushfiqur insisted he has no plans to step down as Test skipper and will let the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decide whether he is fit for the role.”When the team does really well, all the credit goes to the management and when we are not doing really well, all the blame comes to the captain. I can take it,” Mushfiqur said after the Bloemfontein Test.”Obviously all the blame comes to me being the captain. The board will decide about me, since there’s a lot of time before the next Test series. It is not about what I want. I can’t decide to stay as captain, neither can I leave it. The board has to take the decision and I am sure they will take a good one for the team. Country comes first, not the individual.”Mushfiqur was appointed Bangladesh’s all-format captain in 2011, attempted to resign from the limited-overs roles in May 2013 but was convinced to stay on and was then replaced as ODI captain in September 2014 by Mashrafe Mortaza. The six years of varying leadership experience Mushfiqur has to his name has made him realise something about taking charge of a team like Bangladesh: it’s not easy.”Captaincy is always challenging, more so in a team like ours. We are ranked No. 9 or 10 always, so there’s a lot of pressure playing against top sides. The last two Tests didn’t go as the last couple of years have gone,” he said. While Bangladesh were not necessarily expected to win in South Africa, their form over the last few months – especially at home – suggested they would put up more of a fight. But they didn’t give themselves the chance when they chose to bowl first on flat pitches, twice. Both times, Mushfiqur explained the decision as being based on the hope that his attack would get to make use of any early moisture or movement but both times, it was obvious there wasn’t much of either on offer. BCB president Nazmul Hassan said he was “surprised,” by Mushfiqur’s decision and though the captain is willing to admit he may have got it wrong, he wants the chance to make things right.”The blame is coming at me, because I decided to field first in both Tests. Maybe I haven’t been leading properly and that’s why the team isn’t doing well. This is why I am saying that I should be given opportunity to correct my mistakes,” Mushfiqur said. “I haven’t heard anything from them [BCB]. I said it honestly and if it hurt someone, I have to say sorry. I don’t want to be the reason for the team’s bad result. I always tried to inspire the team, and lead from the front. I am also a human being, and I am bound to make mistakes.”Mushfiqur would not be drawn into detailing how much of a say the coach, Chandika Hathurusingha had on decision-making, instead deflecting by insisting the camp was democratic.”Everyone tries to give their opinion. We take decisions collectively. It is not any person’s team. Everyone has a say in selection and plans, which I try to execute in the field,” he said.He also would not say what his relationship with Hathurusingha, which is though to be strained, is like. “It is better to ask him because I am always trying my level best,” Mushfiqur said. “The team management also try to do their best.”And so do the players. Mushfiqur was at pains to point that they had a very strong motivation not to go down in the manner they did.”Everyone gives their 100 percent but not all can be successful. I think we all tried. It is not a club game; we are playing for the country. We don’t want to lose the respect that we gained over the last four years,” he said.Asked whether the batting or bowling let him down more, Mushfiqur said he was equally disappointed in both departments.”I think it is both. There was not a lot of pace and movement in these wickets. But our bowlers, I felt, were good enough to bowl more consistently. I wasn’t worried about the outcome but I wanted to see them do the process right. I think they bowled well towards the latter part of the innings. We have a lot to learn from these Tests,” he said.Faf du Plessis had some sympathy for his opposite number, especially because Mushfiqur did not have the resources at his disposal to properly challenge South Africa.”You look at the two different styles of teams. Bangladesh don’t have tall bowlers. In these conditions you need bowlers who are a bit taller and who can get a bit more bounce. Bounce and pace is what you need when you go to South Africa or Australia,” du Plessis said. But he also pointed the finger at the Bangladesh players, who did not even apply basics.”Then there’s control. That was lacking from Bangladesh in this series. As a batting unit, we felt that every over there was a boundary you could score, so control is very important,” du Plessis said.

Man Utd Could Forget Disasi By Signing "Special" £86m Rock

Life at Manchester United does not seem to be getting any easier for former skipper, Harry Maguire, with the struggling Englishman seemingly in need of a fresh start amid his mounting woes at Old Trafford.

Having recently been stripped of the captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag, the 30-year-old – who started just eight Premier League games last season – was also on the receiving end of a visible rant from new signing Andre Onana during the recent 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in pre-season.

It would appear that the former Leicester City man – who has been the subject of a £20m offer from West Ham United – has fallen way down the defensive pecking order of late, with rumours rife that he could be on his way before the September deadline.

If the £80m signing is to find a new home over the coming weeks, Ten Hag will likely be keen to find a suitable replacement to help bolster his centre-back options ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Who could replace Maguire at Man United?

The Red Devils had been heavily linked with a move for Monaco star, Axel Disasi, in recent months, although as journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed, despite showing an "interest" in the Frenchman, it would appear that he is on his way to rivals Chelsea on a €45m (£38m) deal.

Amid that potential setback, reports in Spain have indicated in recent days that United are among the clubs to have made an offer for RB Leipzig sensation, Josko Gvardiol, with both Manchester City and Liverpool also keen on signing the exciting 21-year-old.

Although valued at a rather steep €100m (£86m), as per the report, the signing of the Croatian international could allow the Old Trafford outfit to forget all about the Stamford Bridge-bound, Disasi.

Should Man United sign Josko Gvardiol?

A player currently "at the beginning of something very special" in his career – according to talent scout Jacek Kulig – Gvardiol could prove to be a dream fit for Ten Hag due to his ability to feature as a natural, left-sided defender, unlike Disasi, with the former Ajax boss having previously outlined his preference to have a left-footer in that role.

With Lisandro Martinez currently the only other left-footed option at the heart of the defence – excluding usual full-back Luke Shaw – it would make sense to bring Gvardiol into the fold to provide further competition and cover, with Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane to be deployed on the opposite side.

The Leipzig rock's quality on the ball would make him a particularly astute option for United as the youngster regularly looks to play out from the back, notably ranking in the top 1% among his European peers for attempted passes, as well as in the top 4% for successful take-ons.

Axel Disasi

Disasi, by contrast, ranks in just the top 46% and the top 7% for those same two metrics, respectively, thus indicating that Gvardiol would be a worthy alternative in the search to find a replacement for Maguire.

Also able to offer the benefit of his ability to feature at left-back, the versatile, Zagreb native also showcased his defensive class in the Bundesliga last term after averaging 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game, with Disasi only just ahead after averaging 2.3 in that regard in Ligue 1 – as both men performed better than Maguire (1.3 tackles and interceptions per game in 2022/23).

Those similarities between the pair with regard to their ball-playing and ball-winning quality would suggest that even if United are forced to watch Disasi head to west London, they could forget all about the former Reims ace by snapping up a younger option, like Gvardiol, instead.

Liverpool: Reds "In Talks" With Piero Hincapie’s Agents

Liverpool have recently been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, and a new update has revealed the saga is progressing quite quickly.

How old is Piero Hincapie?

The Ecuadorian is still only 21 years of age, but has already matured into a formidable centre-back for Leverkusen, having arrived there from Talleres in 2021. He has made 76 apperances for the Bundesliga side, as well as starting three matches for Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup.

Hincapie is arguably one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in Europe at the moment, given the strides he has made at his current club, so it is no surprise that there is interest in his signature. He is contracted to Leverkusen until the summer of 2027, however, so it could take a hefty bid to prise him away any time soon, putting them in a strong bargaining position.

There is no question that Liverpool could do with a left-sided centre-back this summer, in order to boost their defensive options and bring in more competition for Andy Robertson, who is still taking time to adjust to a new role that sees him move centrally more often than before from left-back.

One rumour earlier in the week suggested that Hincapie is being looked at as a potential target and now a new claim has further backed it up.

piero-hincapie

Will Liverpool sign Piero Hincapie?

According to Teradeportes on Twitter X, Liverpool are already having discussions with Hincapie's representatives over a move to Anfield, although West Ham are also in the same position:

"As reported by@FT_schneidi, West Ham and Liverpool are interested and are in talks with Piero Hincapie's team, they also confirmed that Leipzig is still interested in the Ecuadorian and they are also talking, Leverkusen would be looking for a sale of around €45m (£38.5m)."

This is an exciting update for Liverpool supporters, considering Hincapie could be absolutely perfect to come in and bolster that left-sided area at the back this summer, especially with fellow target Goncalo Inacio signing a new deal at Sporting CP and therefore not heading to Merseyside.

The youngster has everything in his locker to be a success for the Reds, whether it be his quality on the ball, his defensive nous or his versatility, with left-back a position he can also thrive in, if needed.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

Last season, Hincapie made an average of 2.5 clearances and won two aerial duels per game in the Bundesliga, and he also enjoyed an 85.1% pass completion rate at the World Cup. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded him as a "fantastic defender", also highlighting "80% of ground duels won" and "64% of aerial duels won" in the Europa League in 2022/23, which further shows what a big talent he is.

If Liverpool could get a deal over the line over the next couple of weeks, and bring in a new defensive midfielder as well, their summer work will be complete and Jurgen Klopp should feel that he has a squad that can fight across four different competitions, mounting a potential Premier League title challenge in the process.

Stokes tweets England Ashes message

Ben Stokes, England’s absent allrounder, sent a message via social media on the eve of the first Ashes Test wishing his team-mates well in their attempts to retain the urn in Australia without him.Stokes is currently unavailable for selection as police continue to investigate his part in a fight outside a nightclub in Bristol two months ago. He has largely kept off the radar, barring a pair of recent posts on Twitter and Instagram, as England prepared for the Ashes but on Thursday he released a video on Twitter, a couple of hours before the first ball in Brisbane.”With the Ashes starting very soon, I just wanted to get a message out to all the boys in Australia, wishing them all the best for the first Test match – all the coaches and the backroom staff as well,” Stokes said. “I know how much preparation has gone into making sure everyone is right and ready to go, by the looks of it everyone is.”Just wanted to wish all the fans who’ve made the long travels out to Australia all the best as well. I hope we can give you a good result. I’ll be sat at home watching and following the lads and hoping that do really well.”England have consistently said they are ready to contest the entire series without Stokes and there remains no official word on when the police – and subsequently the ECB’s disciplinary committee – are likely to conclude proceedings.

Phil Hay Expects A Battle For Key Position at Leeds

Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow hasn't made the move from Champions League playing Newcastle United to just "sit on the bench" this season, according to The Athletic's Phil Hay.

Will Karl Darlow replace Illan Meslier at Leeds United this summer?

After a few months of bad news and general misery for Leeds and their supporters, the team managed to inject a bit of life and hope back into the club after fighting back from 2-0 down to earn a hard-fought draw against Cardiff City on the opening weekend of the Championship season.

That said, the fact that the side went 2-0 down to a club that just managed to avoid relegation to the third tier by the skin of their teeth last season is still a significant concern, and one of the players that did little to help their case was goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

While he wasn't directly at fault for any of the goals, he was still unimpressive and could have done better with the first goal, with Leeds Live reporter Beren Cross giving him just a five out of ten for his performance.

Read the latest Leeds United transfer news HERE…

The Frenchman will need to do better than that over the next few games, as with the £400,000 signing of Darlow from Newcastle last month, his spot is likely to be under serious threat from the former Nottingham Forest man, per Phil Hay.

He gave his opinion on The Square Ball YouTube channel, saying:

"Darlow I think will come into the frame before long I don't really don't think Farke has signed him to sit on the bench."

How old is Karl Darlow?

Born October 8 1990, the former Newcastle keeper is 32-years-old, which while just beyond the peak years for a goalkeeper – according to The Athletic – is a good age for a team's number one and should he perform well for the Whites, he could be there for several years to come.

Worryingly for Meslier, the Englishman has already demonstrated his ability to perform to a high level in the second tier on multiple occasions in his career, most recently with Hull City.

In his 12 appearances for the Tigers last season, he maintained a passing accuracy of 76.3%, won one Man-of-the-Match award and averaged a respectable match rating of 6.87, per WhoScored.

karl-darlow-newcastle-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-illan-meslier-farke

In fact, in his four spells in the Championship, he has never dipped below an average rating of 6.72, proving that he is more than equipped to step between the sticks should even the faintest opportunity present itself.

While he might've not quite had the quality to firmly establish himself as the Magpies' number one following their takeover and rise up the league, he certainly had his moments in the famous black and white, with club legend Alan Shearer lauding him for a particular performance against defending champions Liverpool in 2020, when he said:

"He should be very, very proud of his performance. When required, he came up with the goods. He was big and strong. He just kept them out. There was no way they were going to get past him this evening.

"The defenders in front of him had to work extremely hard, but when they got past the defenders he was just exceptional, superb."

Watching the battle for Leeds' number-one shirt this season will undoubtedly be enjoyable, but if Hay is correct, the writing may be on the wall for Meslier.
