Players to watch from the Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup

India’s top run-scorer, England’s outstanding captain, and a power-hitter from Bangladesh are among the rising stars from the tournament in South Africa

Raunak Kapoor31-Jan-2023Shweta Sehrawat (India)

Sehrawat topped the run charts with 297 runs in seven innings, including four not outs. She had been in red-hot form heading into the tournament – she was the top-scorer in India’s Under-19 Women’s Challenger Trophy as well as the Under-19 Women’s Quadrangular series that featured Sri Lanka, West Indies and two India sides. At the World Cup, her adaptability and range of shots was impressive. Sehrawat largely opened the batting in the tournament and out-performed her partner Shafali Verma; but against Scotland, she was sent in at No. 6 and scored an unbeaten 31 off just 10 balls. There’s intense competition among batters in India’s senior squad, but Sehrawat is certainly one to watch in the future.Related

Shorna Akter (Bangladesh)

Shorna’s impact for Bangladesh goes well beyond numbers, which by themselves were excellent. She scored 153 runs in five innings, averaging 51 at a strike rate of 157.73. She was one of the few proper power-hitters in the tournament and went on to contribute in every game. Hitting six sixes (joint second), including one that went all the way into the stands in Benoni, she set the standard of power-hitting in the opening game when Bangladesh stunned Australia. Shorna followed that up with an unbeaten 28-ball 50 in the next game against Sri Lanka, an innings that proved to be the difference in a close contest which ensured Bangladesh topped their group. She can bat anywhere in the top six, bowl some handy legspin, and is excellent in the field. Bangladesh have already included her in their senior squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise if they start with Shorna in their opening game against Sri Lanka on February 12.Dewmi Vihanga (Sri Lanka)

Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker, Vihanga seems like someone made for the big stage. Deceptive with variations and deadly accurate, she works batters out quickly, picking up Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh in the space of two balls in the Super Six game against India. She bowls in the powerplay and at the death, and in addition to her nine wickets at an average of 12.88, she also chipped in with 113 runs which included a half-century against a strong Bangladesh bowling attack.Milly Illingworth was impressive in the game against India•ICC/Getty ImagesMilly Illingworth (Australia)

Maggie Clark was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets. Three other Australia bowlers ended up with more wickets than Illingworth, who bagged just four. But no one asked the kind of questions of batters that Illingworth did, because no one had the pace. Inspired by Shaun Tait and Lasith Malinga, Illingworth was, by some distance, the fastest bowler in the tournament. Two out of those four wickets came against India, in the only game the eventual champions lost in the tournament, and Illingworth was named Player of the Match. She hurried Shafali into mis-timing one to cover, and in the semi-final against England, she had Liberty Heap caught off an outside edge that flew to deep third, the only time a wicket fell in that fashion in the tournament. Her team wasn’t quite sure when to bowl her, and the powers that come with raw pace will need to be properly harnessed, but as India’s Umran Malik has shown, you can always learn on the job.Grace Scrivens (England)

The easiest pick in this category is England captain Scrivens. Their lead batter, their go-to bowler in a crisis, and a gun-fielder, she is an allrounder in the truest sense. The attacking left-hand batter at the top of the order ended just four short of Shweta Sehrawat in the top run-scorers list. Scrivens registered the highest individual score of the tournament when she hammered 93 off 56 against Ireland. She was the inspiration behind England’s remarkable defense of 99 in the semi-final against Australia, with two crucial wickets, including the final one when Australia needed just four to win.Grace Scrivens was the star of England’s close win against Australia•Getty/ICCAbigail Hotton (New Zealand)

Hotton’s first delivery against West Indies was arguably the ball of the tournament. It was an offspinner’s dream – an offbreak tossed up just outside off stump on a good length, dipping, inviting the batter to drive through cover and turning sharply between bat and pad to take the off stump. Asabi Callendar fell over with one hand on the turf, but better batters than her would have fallen to that ball. Hotton, who likens herself to R Ashwin and Amy Satterthwaite, showed all the skills to succeed at the highest level. In a tournament of several offspinners in name, Hotton is one of the few who looks the real deal.Titas Sadhu (India)

Going purely by numbers, fast bowler Sadhu finished with only six wickets in six games. But she was the sole seamer for India during most parts of their campaign – Shabnam MD and Soppadhandi Yashasri were used at the start but they had economy rates in excess of 10 – and gave them the control they desired. Sadhu not only picks up wickets consistently but is also a decent batter. She already has experience of playing with Jhulan Goswami and Rumeli Dhar in the Bengal circuit amd it won’t be a surprise if she bowls herself into contention for a fast bowler’s slot in the senior India side in the near future. She’s certainly going to be a sought-after player in the inaugural Women’s Premier League.

The art of T20 six-hitting: Why Pollard and the Pandya brothers are key to Mumbai Indians' dominance

That Mumbai are the best team at the death in a fickle format in a competitive league is down to these three – controlled – power-hitters

Sidharth Monga09-Nov-2020You watch it live, you watch the replays, and you see T Natarajan missed his length. And it happens, right? The yorker is a difficult delivery to execute, and if you err, you err on the fuller side because low full tosses are still hard to hit. It is just that Kieron Pollard can, you know, hit these low full tosses.Except that Natarajan didn’t miss his length. The definition of a yorker keeps changing over time, if you look at the pitch maps that the broadcasters show. Till not long ago, anything from the stumps to two metres down the wicket was considered a yorker. Perhaps they realised this year that a ball arriving at the base of stumps is a full toss, so they moved the yorker zone further away from the stumps to the 1m-to-3m zone. The popping crease is 1.22 metres from the stumps, so a ball landing on the popping crease and just beyond is still a yorker nailed.Natarajan nailed two of those to Pollard only to be hit for boundaries. What you saw in live time was a low full toss, but it wasn’t a yorker only because Pollard used his reach – no walking or charging – and all his timing and power, honed over hours and hours of range-hitting.Then there is Hardik Pandya, whom you can shut down with a perfectly nailed yorker but without any margin for error. You go wrong either side by six inches, and he hits you for a six. Hardik has turned six-hitting into an art form where he hardly ever over-hits or mis-hits. If he doesn’t get the right ball to hit, it doesn’t faze him. He knows bowlers are going to make a mistake. Kagiso Rabada nailed two yorkers for a dot and a single, but he only had to err slightly with two other balls to be hit for sixes. On one occasion he missed the yorker, on the other, the hard length. The only way to bowl to them perhaps is to bowl quick and hard lengths, and then mix it up with perfect yorkers, but the world doesn’t have enough bowlers who can execute this flawlessly. Both Pollard and Hardik have shown that the moment you err even a little from that hard length, or are not quick enough with that hard length, boundaries across the world are not big enough. It is scary that they hit sixes while batting within themselves. The result? Hardik has hit a six every six balls to go with a four every 11 in IPL 2020. Pollard’s six-hitting has been just as frequent, but he is even better with the fours, hitting one every ten balls. Despite having played fewer than half the deliveries that Ishan Kishan has, Hardik is challenging him for the most sixes hit this tournament. That all three belong to one team tells you why the Mumbai Indians have been so dominant.Kieron Pollard – power unlimited•BCCIYou would have thought their opponents in the final, the Delhi Capitals’ Rabada and Anrich Nortje, would have just the right ammunition – pace, bounce, hard lengths – but they have bowled 20 balls to these two for 33 runs and no wicket, including a six every five balls. This is classic Pollard and Hardik: the two bowlers seemingly most suited to bowling to them have bowled 11 dots out of 20, but have conceded four sixes as well. Even the slightest error has been punished. Then there is the wildcard, Krunal Pandya. Take Mumbai’s previous match against the Capitals for example. Krunal was promoted ahead of Hardik because the Capitals still had one over of left-arm spin from Axar Patel left. He and Kishan – both left-hand batsmen – against Axar would make it a bad match-up for the Capitals. They were happy to play out Daniel Sams and wait for Patel. The Capitals didn’t trust Patel in this situation, and so used up two overs from Rabada and Nortje instead. Having forced the Capitals to use their death bowlers earlier than they would have liked, Krunal had done his job. He was free to hit the two main bowlers now: if he got runs, it was a bonus; if he got out, he had got Hardik an over from either Patel or Marcus Stoinis to face at the death. In another game, when Krunal wasn’t required to tactically disrupt match-ups, he came out and smacked 20 off four balls in the last over. While it is no surprise that Mumbai are the best team at the death, a knock-on effect of this is the freedom with which Suryakumar Yadav and Kishan can play. They know that if they have one slow over in the middle, or if they get out trying to dominate the opposition, they have the luxury of these three batsmen coming in in the last ten. Yadav’s intent and execution has been way better than that of Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey and Shubhman Gill to name a few, but he can afford to fail because of Pollard and the Pandya brothers; others don’t have that luxury. Yadav acknowledged as much after Mumbai beat the Capitals in the Qualifier 1.Between the three of them, Pollard and the Pandya brothers provide enough power and chaos in the last ten overs to make planning for them a struggle for any opposition. Two of them are efficient and ruthless power-hitters. All three of them are seemingly selfless, unconcerned about averages and unfazed by dot balls. The two power-hitters have varying styles of hitting, which means the bowler has to adjust vastly to hold his own.Even if Mumbai happen to have an off day in the final – which can happen – their team construction, especially Nos. 5, 6 and 7, holds truest to the spirit of T20 cricket. A defeat in a final will not change that, or the fact that because of this power-hitting they are the most dominant side in a fickle format in a competitive league.

Liverpool join race to sign “aggressive” gem who’s been compared to Szoboszlai

Liverpool are now reportedly rivalling Newcastle United in the race to sign a young midfield star who’s been compared to Dominik Szoboszlai.

Slot: Liverpool don't have "Jacob Murphy profile" to unlock Isak

It’s been a tumultuous time for Liverpool and record signing Alexander Isak. The Reds are yet to unlock the Swede’s best form, despite splashing out £125m to break a British record and welcome their next star man from Newcastle in the summer.

Arne Slot, however, is remaining patient and recently pinpointed exactly why Isak is yet to replicate his Newcastle form at Anfield. The Dutchman told reporters: “With Jeremie Frimpong being injured and Conor Bradley being out it is not like we have so many options on the right-hand side, and it is a bit similar on the left.

UCL club now ready to launch offer to sign £21m-a-year Liverpool star

The Reds could lose one of their star men.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 5, 2025

“Alex could benefit maybe from a Conor or a Jeremie type of player who goes outside, instead of both wingers we have who come inside and full-backs who can come in with crosses.

“But the main difference for him is that we are facing a low block many times. It is not that it never happened at Newcastle but not as much, I think. This season the league has changed, we see so many more low blocks than last season.

“But I see this not only against us, I see this in many games. It makes it harder for him compared to his time at Newcastle but I think it is also him adjusting to his teammates and his teammates adjusting to him. But it is obvious and clear that we have not the profile of [Newcastle’s] Jacob Murphy, for example, available at this moment at this time.”

Whether Liverpool find their own version of Murphy in the January transfer window is now the big question. They’ve already been linked with Antoine Semenyo, who’d certainly offer the same quality, but he may not be the only one on his way.

Liverpool join race to sign Alex Toth

As reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Alex Toth from Ferencvaros in 2026. The 20-year-old midfielder has been watched closely by scouts across the Premier League, including both those at Anfield and at St James’ Park and now seems destined for a big move.

Dubbed an “aggressive presser” by Hungarian journalist Bence Bocsak, it’s clear to see where the Szoboszlai comparisons have come from.

Liverpool’s press is certainly something that needs addressing in midfield too, which makes Toth a viable option when 2026 arrives. The Reds have got one over on Newcastle before and could yet do so yet again next year.

Red Sox Reveal Renderings of New Building That Will Tower Over Green Monster

Fenway Park's iconic Green Monster could soon be overshadowed by a corporate building.

As reported by the Boston Globe on Wednesday morning, Fenway Sports Group—the holding conglomerate that owns the Boston Red Sox—is moving forward with the first phase of a massive redevelopment project around Fenway Park.

Said first phase includes a seven-story building on Landsdowne Street that will sit just between Fenway's 37-foot left field wall and the Massachusetts Turnpike. The building will reportedly include office and retail space and stand at 129 feet—towering over the ballpark's beloved Green Monster.

Here's a look at some of the renderings:

"While a formal agreement is still in progress, the current plan is for the building to serve primarily as the future home of the Red Sox and Fenway Sports Group’s main offices, who are expected to occupy the majority of the space," a spokesperson told the Globe in a statement.

The earliest the project could start is reportedly "mid-to-late 2026."

Bayern Munich ready Luis Diaz appeal after receiving 'very harsh' Champions League ban for red card that injured PSG's Achraf Hakimi

Bayern Munich are preparing to appeal the red card picked up by Luis Diaz after he received a 'very harsh' Champions League ban for the foul that injured Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi earlier this month. Diaz was slapped with a three-game ban by UEFA, which came as a huge blow for the German giants ahead of their key Champions League clash against Arsenal.

  • Diaz handed ban after Hakimi challenge

Former Liverpool star Diaz picked up a red card in Bayern's 2-1 win at PSG in a Champions League clash. The Colombia international scored twice in the first half but was then dismissed following a poor tackle on Moroccan right-back Hakimi at the stroke of half-time. The full-back went off with a sprained ankle and is still injured to this day. The challenge was described as "serious rough play" by UEFA, who handed the forward a three-game suspension.

Bayern held on to secure a precious win and now sit joint-top of the Champions League standings.

Bayern set to appeal Diaz suspension

On Saturday, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen told : "We've requested the written justification of the verdict from UEFA in order to lodge an appeal. We will see if we can manage to reduce the ban. We assumed it would only be one game after an initial letter from UEFA. So the three-match ban surprised us just as much as everyone else; we couldn't have expected it at all. It was obviously a serious foul, but it wasn't an act of violence, nor was it directed at the referee, nor was there any further offence after the foul. In the past, only such things have resulted in a three-match ban. We believe there shouldn’t be a three-match ban – but realistically, we have to say that such an appeal only succeeds in rare cases."

Sporting director Max Eberl then added: "I’m not so naive as to say it will only be one match. If we reduce it to two matches, that would be fantastic. Three matches, in my opinion, is very harsh."

  • Kroos slammed referee for Diaz red card

While the foul did look dangerous at that moment, former Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Toni Kroos came to Diaz's defence, while slamming the referee as the legendary player felt that the decision was too harsh.

Speaking on his podcast, Kroos was emphatic in his belief that the referee made the wrong call as he said: "For me, it’s clear: it wasn’t a red card," Kroos said, insisting that the referee "let Hakimi’s injury have too much of an influence on his assessment of the play."

The German argued that the challenge itself, while forceful, did not indicate malicious intent from Diaz. He added: "If Hakimi had gotten up after the challenge, nobody would have reviewed the play."

Kroos also turned his attention toward the role of the VAR team, suggesting that replaying slow-motion angles can distort reality. "In situations like these, the referee should judge the action itself, not the consequences," he concluded.

Up next: Bayern face Arsenal in top of the table contest

Vincent Kompany's side returned to action after the international break on Saturday as they faced Freiburg in a Bundesliga clash. Bayern secured a thumping 6-2 win riding on Michael Olise's brace, while Kane and Nicolas Jackson were also on target.

They will now aim to build on the dominating performance ahead of facing Premier League leaders Arsenal next in the Champions League in a top-of-the-table contest. Both teams are on a four-game winning streak in Europe.

Better than Bruno: Newcastle star is now their best signing of the PIF era

Newcastle United have not been afraid to splash the cash since PIF took over the club just over four years ago. T

hey have well and truly backed Eddie Howe, smashing the club transfer record twice by signing Alexander Isak and his replacement this summer, Nick Woltemade.

The Magpies have added depth in other areas of the pitch too. Out wide, Anthony Gordon and his namesake Anthony Elanga were two notable reinforcements who cost £45m and £55m respectively. At the back, they have signed the likes of Sven Botman and Tino Livramento, building a strong defence for the present and future.

However, it is in midfield where the signings have really felt substantial, with Bruno Guimaraes one of the notable names.

The numbers behind Bruno Guimaraes impact at Newcastle

At 27 years of age, Guimaraes is entering his peak years. The Brazilian joined the Magpies back in January 2022 from Lyon for a fee of £35m. He’s since gone on to rack up 167 appearances for the North East side.

This season, the 39-cap Brazil star has shone in the middle of the park. He has three goals and three assists in 13 games, which included one of each against Nottingham Forest in a 2-0 Premier League win.

In terms of his quality on the ball, one of Guimaraes’ standout traits is his carrying ability. He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League when it comes to progressing the ball from the middle third to the final third, averaging 0.5 carries into the penalty box per game during 2025/26. That places him in the top 8% of top-flight midfielders.

However, it is not just the quality on the ball Guimaraes brings. He is an excellent leader, having captained the Magpies 12 times out of the 13 games he’s played. That in itself highlights what he brings to Howe’s squad.

As good as Guimaraes is, there is a case to be made that Newcastle have a better midfielder.

Newcastle's best signing of the PIF era

Howe is certainly not short of options in the middle of the park. The Englishman has Guimaraes as one of his first-choice midfielders, but can also pick from Joelinton, summer signing Jacob Ramsey and homegrown star Lewis Miley.

However, the best of the bunch must surely be Sandro Tonali. The Italian has been at Newcastle since the summer of 2023 and has amassed 69 appearances in that famous Black and White striped shirt so far.

Since his return at the start of last season, he has been sensational. The former AC Milan midfielder has become a key man in the centre of the park for Howe, forming a quite brilliant midfield pivot with Guimaraes.

He has certainly become one of the best players in the current Magpies side. In fact, Taylor Payne, host of Newcastle fan podcast On The Tyne, said he is “the best midfield player to ever pull on a black and white shirt.”

It is easy to see why Payne and every other Newcastle fan rate him so highly. The 29-cap Azzurri star is brilliant both in and out of possession. He is a pressing monster, as shown by this clip from last season.

On top of that, he has some standout numbers. This season, has created 1.8 chances per game, showing his impact in the final third. Last term, he averaged 6.1 ball recoveries per 90 minutes.

Tonali, who earns £120k per week at St James’ Park, has been a revelation in midfield for the Magpies. He is a man whom Howe can trust on and off the ball, and is surely one of the most complete midfielders around.

It is easy to see how he has become the best signing since the PIF takeover four years ago. Tonali is certainly a brilliant operator in the middle of the park.

"Sensational talent" to leave Arsenal for good after Mikel Arteta decision

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has already made a decision on the long-term future of a promising player ahead of 2026, with the Spaniard having no place for him in his long-term plans for the North Londoners.

Arsenal prepare for imminent Premier League return against Fulham

The Gunners entered this international break on a near-perfect run of form.

Arteta’s side, barring their 1-1 draw with Man City, have won every single match in all competitions since the last international break, including a dramatic win at Newcastle, where Arsenal showcased a Liverpool-esque ability to nick three points right at the death, despite not playing at their best.

Arsenal’s manager will be quietly thrilled by his squad’s reaction to their first and only defeat of the campaign so far at Anfield, with the Gunners’ impressive unbeaten run since catapulting them to the Premier League summit.

The only piece of bad news for Arteta recently has been club captain Martin Odegaard’s knee injury, with the Norway international not expected to return until after the November international break.

Odegaard joins Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Noni Madueke’s on Arsenal’s long-term injury list, but luckily for Arteta, summer signing Piero Hincapie is set to be available for their clash against Fulham this weekend.

Hincapie has been struggling with a groin problem since joining from Bayer Leverkusen on loan with a £45 million option to buy, with the Ecuador international playing just one minute for Arteta so far and still waiting for his Premier League debut.

The 23-year-old was brought in as a direct replacement for Jakub Kiwior, who joined FC Porto on loan in the summer window.

Kiwior, by contrast to Hincapie, has got off to an excellent start to his temporary spell in Portugal. He’s started every league game since his switch to the Primeira Liga, helping Francesco Farioli’s side to maintain their unbeaten run domestically and in the Europa League.

Porto have also conceded just two goals in all competitions so far, with the 25-year-old finding his feet very quickly abroad.

Jakub Kiwior to leave Arsenal for good after Mikel Arteta decision

Kiwior’s loan includes an obligation to become permanent for around £15 million plus add-ons if certain conditions are met, and it appears as if the Poland international is firmly on his way to meeting those requirements to seal an indefinite Arsenal exit.

This is just as well, with Arteta already deciding that there is no place for the ex-Spezia man in his long-term plans.

Ipswich Town'sGeorgeHirstin action with Arsenal's Jakub Kiwior

That is according to reports from Spain, which state that, even if Kiwior doesn’t end up meeting the obligation conditions at Porto, Arsenal are set to sell the defender next summer and have put a £21.5 million price tag on his head in the event he becomes available again.

As things stand, the most likely scenario is Kiwior joining Porto permanently, and it is believed they wish to secure his future in April or May after an impressive early run of form under Farioli.

Called a “sensational talent” by members of the media, it was always a tall order for Kiwior to establish himself as a mainstay Arsenal starter ahead of Gabriel and William Saliba, who’ve established themselves as two of the top five best centre-backs in world football.
