West Ham fans want Grady Diangana to return in January

Grady Diangana made it four Championship assists for the 2019/20 campaign as he set up Matt Phillips during Monday’s clash with Stoke City.

The 21-year-old joined West Bromwich Albion on loan from West Ham United over the summer and has made a positive impression thus far.

Indeed, the attacker has now scored four times and registered four assists in 13 Championship matches for the Baggies since his arrival.

He also won the penalty at Stoke which ultimately saw West Brom double their advantage, and 2-0 was how it finished on the night.

And it will not come as a surprise to learn that a number of West Ham fans took to social media on Monday to comment on the former England Under-20 international.

It would be fair to say that the general consensus is that the capital club’s fans want the 5 ft 11 ace back at the London Stadium during the January transfer window.

Leeds youngster Eddie Nketiah sends a huge message to Marcelo Bielsa

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Earlier in the season Patrick Bamford was insistent that he was focusing on club matters rather than international football

But is that something that might well come back to hurt his chances for Leeds? Quite possibly.

While the centre forward was busy away from the match action over the break, his main competition was not only in the goals but also making a massive statement to his manager.

Eddie Nketiah scored last week versus Slovenia for England’s U21s before the striker then got himself on the score sheet three times against Austria on Tuesday evening.

Even away from Leeds, he still scores goals.

The 20-year-old put in an incredibly lively performance and on another day could have helped himself to four strikes.

What was thought to be his first went down as an own goal before it was then given back to him while he also missed a penalty. Despite that final aspect, he put his starting credentials right at the forefront of Marcelo Bielsa’s mind.

Bamford has gone six matches without a goal now and since he last netted, Nketiah has scored eight for club and country.

That speaks volumes about how good he’s been, but also why it’s slightly baffling that he hasn’t been given more of a chance.

Nketiah’s first goal initially went down as an own goal so graphic correct at time of writing. Since corrected to three goals.

Leeds’ number nine has had a tireless attitude in recent weeks and has deservedly earned acclaim for the way he’s worked, but the fact of the matter is that the Whites lack goals and he isn’t finding the net.

Bielsa’s men average the highest number of shots per game in the division but only sit tenth in terms of goals scored.

It’s damning and it could well be something that halts them in their tracks in terms of promotion.

But Nketiah is the real focus here. He’s still yet to start in the league and even if his manager still doesn’t trust him entirely, he must bite the bullet at some point with his selection.

Why are Leeds fans the best in the country? Find out in the video below…

The 20-year-old is currently doing all he can to make his name heard and even voiced his feelings after the game.

He revealed to Sky Sports: “I will never be happy with being on the bench. I want to play. I pride myself on being in the team. I think I am good enough to be in the team.”

It was a staunch message from Nketiah who is now surely closer than ever to starting in west Yorkshire.

If he doesn’t play from the off this weekend, the 64-year-old will be in serious danger of not only upsetting supporters but also damaging their hopes of winning too.

His three goals against Austria shows he’s in form and has to be considered.

Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino suggests Dele Alli close to being back to his best

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has delivered an exciting update on Dele Alli during his Watford pre-match press conference on Thursday, as per Football London.

What did he say?

The Argentine was asked whether the club and the fans would see the best of the England international in the coming weeks following a tough season for the 23-year-old to date, and his response was certainly encouraging.

The 47-year-old said: “He’s young, 23, but I love the way he’s working in the past few months, working hard to be the best, to find the best form.

“That is a process that needs time too. It’s not now I want I get. It’s about working consistently and then suddenly the form you want arrives. I think he’s very close. He is doing well.”

Alli has played just 264 minutes of football in all competitions this season following injury issues, with only 30 minutes of that coming in the Premier League ahead of the visit of the Hornets this weekend.

Exciting times

While Spurs’ defence has been a major concern during the current campaign – none more so than conceding 10 goals in their previous two outings against Bayern Munich and Brighton and Hove Albion – they haven’t really clicked in the final third yet either, aside from the 4-0 win against Crystal Palace.

Alli used to regularly hit double figures in terms of goals and assists for Tottenham, with 22 and 13 and 14 and 17 in 2016/17 and 2017/18 respectively, but he fell short last term as injury niggles clearly got the better of him.

Now the north London outfit could do with having the man who was so effective in the final third for them back given their struggles in 2019/20 to date, as well as a lack of form for Christian Eriksen who picked up a shocking 2/10 rating from Football London at the Amex, and if Pochettino thinks he is close to reaching that level then that can only be an exciting thing.

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa ignoring key formation is puzzling

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Marcelo Bielsa attracted widespread criticism from Leeds fans at the weekend.

Considering the way he’s taken Leeds to a new level in the Championship it was perhaps somewhat of an overreaction.

But there is an argument to be had in terms of his team selection.

At the moment, it’s proving questionable and the way he’s set up his team has led to late exploitation and also a lack of goals.

In matches against Swansea and Derby, they had over 60% of the possession but only scored once and took just a solitary point from those clashes.

So what can Leeds do?

On the chalkboard

At the moment Bielsa’s tactical ignorance is proving to be a real issue for Leeds. He keeps on relying on Jack Harrison, someone who hasn’t contributed to a goal since the opening weekend, while Patrick Bamford has now gone goalless in three games.

The calls, certainly from supporters, is for Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa to start but possibly a system change is needed.

After all, arguably Leeds’ best performance in the league this season came when operating with three at the back.

Against Stoke last month the Whites recorded a 3-0 victory as they amassed 64.5% of the possession away from home.

It was as complete a performance as you can get on the road as Bielsa’s much-teased two man attack was in operation.

On the day, Harrison and Bamford were the men tasked with leading the line as a pairing but with Nketiah now so close to gaining a chance, perhaps this is how the Argentine can work him into his system.

It’s particularly confusing that the 64-year-old has neglected this formation since the win over Stoke.

Leeds are struggling to get over the line but even if a 4-1-4-1 is his preferred way to go, he shouldn’t be against change.

The Whites’ brightest spell against Brentford came when they switched to a three-man defence as Nketiah popped up with a late winner.

It allowed greater protection for their attacking full-backs in Stuart Dallas and Gjanni Alioski as well, who both scored against Stoke.

In that 3-4-1-2 system they deployed at the Potteries, Leeds looked confident in defence but also going forward.

That was certainly not the case versus the Rams, especially late on when they conceded three of Derby’s five efforts on goal in the final 15 minutes.

Ignorance is sometimes bliss but perhaps Bielsa ought to look at something that has already treated Leeds so well in 2019/20, rather than a system that’s causing difficulties.

Rangers fans react as Goldson silences some critics v Hamilton

Rangers went top of the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon as they hammered Hamilton Academical 5-0 at Ibrox.

The Gers went into the game just around an hour after Celtic had lost at the Tony Macaroni Arena to Livingston and knew that a win would take them top of the league.

Some added pressure to a game they were already expected to win, then, but they dealt with it well and put away the visitors with real ease.

A Jermain Defoe hat-trick was the main reason for the win, but goals from defenders Borna Barisic and Connor Goldson helped add sheen to the victory.

Indeed, Goldson silenced a few critics with his display as he battered in a header from a James Tavernier cross for 2-0.

Here, then, is some of the reaction to the defender’s goal and performance on social media:

A fine win for the Gers and a good performance from the centre-half as we head into the international break.

Opinion: Crystal Palace should definitely line up a summer move for this Championship star

Crystal Palace got themselves a superb win this weekend as they saw off Leicester City 4-1 at the King Power Stadium.

An inspired showing got the Eagles just the sort of result they needed heading into the crucial last few months of the season, and it was a fine display which showed the players are right behind manager Roy Hodgson as he looks to guide them to safey.

The summer transfer window will be one thing which is already entering the mind of Hodgson too, and we here in the Tavern think a couple of shrewd additions from the Championship could be the way the club could go if they don’t want to delve into the European market.

And one man we feel is ready for top flight football after impressing for Sheffield United is defender John Egan, who has been superb since moving from Brentford in the summer.

The big Irish defender has become the key man at the back for the Blades as he holds the fort while the lacks of Chris Basham and Jack O’Connell maraud from the back and into attacking positions.

It’s this sort of defending from Egan which makes him standout, and he’d be a shrewd capture for Palace as they look to shore up their defence with plenty of interest bound to be shown in the impressive Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer.

Egan fits the bill nicely. He is big, powerful, good in possession, and someone who can improve further. Roy Hodgson knows how to improve and bring the best out of players too, and Egan would surely only flourish more working under the former England manager.

Man City fans drool over summer signing Rodri after Shakhtar display

[ad_pod ]

As Father Time continues to catch up with Fernandinho, Manchester City’s desperate need for a new holding midfielder was perhaps never more important than this summer.

Pep Guardiola’s side eventually splashed the cash to bring Atletico Madrid star Rodri to the Etihad, and it’s fair to say the Spaniard has hit the ground running for his new club.

The 23-year-old notched his first goal for City in the defeat to Norwich in the Premier League, and delivered an impressive performance at the heart of midfield in the Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night.

The Spain international managed four tackles, two interceptions and one clearance in a defensive masterclass, and the performance saw City fans flood to Twitter to share their thoughts on their summer signing.

Many supporters of the Manchester side hailed his “outstanding” display, with one fan in particular claiming he is undoubtedly the “best defensive midfielder in Europe”.

Some fans even compared him to Barcelona stalwart Sergio Busquets, and labelled Rodri as a “truly wonderful footballer”.

Villa looking at summer move for Hickey

Aston Villa are already looking at a summer move for Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey, according to Ashley Preece.

The Lowdown: Late bid for Hickey

Villa got their January business completed relatively early, with Calum Chambers the last of four senior additions to join Steven Gerrard last month.

There were no deadline day twists at Bodymoor Heath when it comes to incomings, although there were rumours that Villa launched a €10m (£8.35m) bid for Hickey which included a 20% sell-on clause. Bologna turned down that proposal, but it seems as if Villa will go back in for the Scottish teenager at the end of the season.

The Latest: Preece’s claim

Preece ran a Q&A on Birmingham Live in the final hours of the transfer window and he was quizzed about the club’s left-back ranks following Matt Targett’s loan move to Newcastle, revealing that Villa are already ‘looking’ at a move for Hickey.

The journalist outlined: “It’ll be Digne and Young from now until May with no recall option in Targett’s deal. Villa looking to go back in for Hickey in the summer.”

The Verdict: Shrewd move

Hickey, who has been likened to Gareth Bale, is known for his athleticism and pace and appears to be a future star. He has also been linked with Manchester City, so securing his services ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side could be a major coup for Villa.

Since leaving Hearts for Bologna, the 19-year-old’s Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed from £540,000 to £11.7m, and he has also played as a left midfielder in 2021/22, earning vital experience in Serie A on top of his previous outings in the Scottish Premiership.

On that basis, securing a summer move for him and midfield target Yves Bissouma could be a brilliant decision by Villa in the long run, possibly making Hickey the perfect eventual successor to Lucas Digne in years to come.

Tottenham: Alasdair Gold relays news on Christian Eriksen

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has revealed that he met Christian Eriksen last weekend and wouldn’t rule out a future move for the Brentford man, Alasdair Gold reports.

The Lowdown: Eriksen links

Eriksen signed for Brentford last month on a six-month deal until the end of the season.

Spurs insider John Wenham wouldn’t rule out a return to Tottenham days before the January window opened, though, whereas pundit Paul Robinson also believed a north London return could be on the cards.

Described as a ‘ruthless playmaker’ by Jamie Redknapp, Eriksen may well be a free agent once again in July, with Spurs having already made the former fan favourite a target ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, per The Daily Mail.

The Latest: Conte’s comments

Reliable reporter Gold took to Twitter on Wednesday lunchtime, sharing a link to a football.london story where Conte discussed Eriksen.

This is what he had to say in his social media post, revealing the pair have met and that a future move hasn’t been ruled out.

“Antonio Conte bumped into Christian Eriksen at the weekend, at the hotel they’re both staying at, and the Spurs boss would not rule out managing the Dane at Tottenham after this season.”

The Verdict: One to watch

Eriksen may well make his Bees debut this weekend when Thomas Frank’s side hosts Crystal Palace, and with Conte refusing to end speculation over the former Spurs star, a summer move could be one to keep a close eye on.

Should he impress for Brentford in their final 14 Premier League games, Conte may well decide to explore a free transfer, especially as he doesn’t have an attacking midfield option on the books after Dele Alli left for Everton.

It would be an incredible return, should it materialise, with Eriksen contributing to 159 goals in 305 games during his first stint as a Tottenham player.

Spurs celebrity can’t believe Markanday news

Taking to Twitter, broadcaster, author and Tottenham Hotspur fan Greg Jenner has commented on a Tottenham Hotspur exit development involving young winger Dilan Markanday.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Markanday exit talks…

As per reliable reports, Tottenham are in talks with Blackburn over an exit for the Lilywhites starlet with Sky Sports revealing that the 20-year-old could now leave.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Alongside Sky, reliable reporter Dan Kilpatrick of The Evening Standard claims that a deal could be announced next week as with the fee to believed to be around £500,000 – which could rise to over £1 million with add-ons.

The Latest: Jenner reacts…

In reaction to this development, Jenner, a BBC broadcaster, claimed Spurs letting the talent go is a real ‘waste’.

“What?! That’s bizarre – he’s clearly a big talent,” the BBC Sounds host explained.

“And we have a striker crisis. Why haven’t we been playing him instead of very very young Dane Scarlett? What a waste!”

The Verdict: Agreed…

Making his senor debut this season in the Europa Conference League, Markanday has come on leaps and bounds at Spurs, even scoring an incredible 12 goals and five assists in 14 Premier League 2 starts.

The homegrown ace could’ve been a star in years to come but manager Antonio Conte’s use of a three-of-the-back formation makes Markanday’s inclusion as a winger difficult to say the least.

Lilywhites supporters will be disappointed to see him leave but will be interesting to see how he adapts to England’s second tier.
