A bowl-off between two aggressive attacks

The second ODI between Pakistan and South Africa is, in essence, a bowl-off between two aggressive attacks against shaky batting line-ups.

The Preview by Firdose Moonda31-Oct-2013Match facts Friday, November 1, 2013
Start time 1500 local (1100GMT)Shahid Afridi’s search for consistency will be crucial to Pakistan’s fortunes in the series•Associated Press

Big Picture On a day when 701 runs were scored in the India-Australia ODI in Nagpur, fans of the 50-over format were reminded of the drama of a low-scoring thriller, as South Africa nudged out Pakistan by one run in a tense game. However, if AB de Villiers has his way, it’s unlikely there will be any more tight matches in the series.De Villiers hoped the win would act as a catalyst for South Africa, creating more consistent one-day form for a team that has struggled to hit the high notes they find with ease in the longer format. “You need a win like this sometimes to turn things around,” de Villiers said, while admitting he does not know why the batting line-up continues to fail. “We are not getting partnerships going; not playing well together as a batting unit. I believe we will get there.”Graeme Smith’s return has added some stability but South Africa’s middle order is still shaky. Technique, although something that cannot be altered overnight, in the UAE conditions and against a crafty spin attack is still being exposed even as the bowlers continue to save the team blushes.Pakistan are in the same state. Their bowling attack is capable of putting the team in positions of advantage that their batsmen continually squander. They will have to find a way to play their former countryman Imran Tahir and keep runs flowing while the South Africa seamers are in operation. For now, it remains a contest that resembles a bowl-off between two aggressive attacks feasting on two limp line-ups. In a game ruled by batsmen, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, although both teams would prefer to score more runs.Form guidePakistan LWWLW (last five completed games most recent first)
South Africa WLLWLIn the spotlight A few Pakistan fans joked that because Shahid Afridi had a sensational showing with the ball in the first match, he could be relied on to taper off for the rest of the series. It’s a theory he will want to prove wrong. Afridi did not take a single wicket against South Africa earlier this year and has not made a significant contribution with the bat since his innings of 76 against West Indies in July. He will search for some consistency as Pakistan hope to come back in the series.Faf du Plessis has now gone 10 innings without scoring an ODI half-century and appears the most vulnerable middle-order batsman against Pakistan spinners. He has had a long rope, playing in all but two ODIs since he was selected in January 2011, but with an average of 27.19, his reputation can no longer be the main ground for his selection. Du Plessis needed a big performance in the first ODI to keep his place, but the lack of a suitable middle-order replacement means he is likely to have the rest of the series to turn his form around.Team news After their middle order crumbled, Pakistan may consider shuffling personnel. Asad Shafiq and uncapped Sohaib Maqsood will put pressure on Umar Amin for his place but the more pressing concerns are in the wicket-keeping department. AB de Villiers has admitted that Pakistan’s tail starts with Umar Akmal, and the hosts may consider replacing Akmal with Sarfraz Ahmed. An attack that dismissed the opposition for under 200 needs little tinkering with, but Abdur Rehman is on hand should Pakistan opt for another spinner.Pakistan (likely) 1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Umar Amin/Asad Shafiq/Sohaib Maqsood, 6 Umar Akmal/Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad IrfanColin Ingram is leading the run charts in South Africa’s domestic one-day competition but, with three ducks in his last three ODIs, his form isn’t extending to the international stage. Hashim Amla is still waiting for the birth of his second child so South Africa may have no option but to bring Quinton de Kock in, although they may leave the glovework to de Villiers. Tahir’s impressive showing in Sharjah is likely to keep Robin Peterson out again and Vernon Philander will also have to await his turn.South Africa (likely) 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Quinton de Kock, 3 JP Duminy, 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 AB de Villiers (capt & wk), 6 David Miller, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Lonwabo Tsotsobe, 11 Imran TahirStats and trivia South Africa and Pakistan have played two five-match ODI series since 2010-11. Both series have followed exactly the same pattern where South Africa have won the first, third and deciding matches, while Pakistan have won the second and fourth. The one run difference between the two teams is the smallest margin of victory (in runs) this year. South Africa were also involved in two matches that ended with a one-wicket margin – both against New Zealand. Misbah-ul-Haq is 102 runs behind George Bailey on the list of leading ODI run-scorers in 2013. With 41 wickets, Saeed Ajmal is two wickets behind Ravindra Jadeja on the list of leading wicket-takers in ODIs this year. Quotes”It’s really tough to get ten wickets in the game, so that’s why the totals are really close together. Back home, you get lower scores, guys really running through batting line-ups.”
“If we keep recalling what happened in the last match it will be difficult. We must forget that and all our players should play the next match as a new game.”

Tendulkar loss hard to cope with – Rohit

Rohit Sharma has said that he has no idea how the Indian dressing room will cope with the absence of Sachin Tendulkar

Rohit said the team will need to get over Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement soon, but added that it was not going to be easy•BCCI

Rohit Sharma, who won the Player-of-the-Series award for scoring match-winning centuries in his first two Tests, has said that he has no idea how the Indian dressing room will cope with the absence of Sachin Tendulkar. Rohit admitted that the Indian players will be “tormented” by Tendulkar’s retirement and the even if the best way was to move forward it would not be an easy task.”The team won, so I’m happy, and since I’ve contributed it’s all the more nice. But there’s one thing that we’re going to be tormented by for the next few days, that from now on Sachin Tendulkar will not play with us,” Rohit said. “This will keep on coming back to our hearts again and again.”Rohit pointed out that over the years Tendulkar had become many things to different people – a coach, a mentor, a friend, a guardian – and hence the loss would be deeper. “His presence in the dressing room will really be missed. It’s not just about batting, it’s about a lot of things that you need in yourself to succeed. All those things will be missed,” he said. “I don’t know how the team members are going to react to the situations which we’ll be confronted with now on, now that we finally know that he will not be with the team any more. We need to get over this very quickly, but I don’t know how we’re going to do it. It’s never going to be easy. Just an hour back you saw what happened at the ground, that shows what sort of a man he was, what he brought to Indian cricket.”Personally for him, Rohit said, Tendulkar was just a call away or a five-minute walk from his home. From 2008, Rohit said, Tendulkar had been contributing in some way to his career. “First, he brings so much to the table. It’s not just about batting, but the way to conduct yourself off the field is very important. This is something I’ve learnt personally, and I’m sure most of the team also has learnt this. These are the things that I feel will be really missed.”When it comes to batting abroad, what sort of mindset you’ve got to have, and how you prepare… I still remember my first tour to South Africa in 2010, I remember having a chat with him, and that was the time I realised that playing abroad won’t be easy. Also, 2008 went I went to Australia for the CB Series. These are the interactions I’ve had with him, from those interactions I realised that playing abroad is never easy,” Rohit said.Rohit walked into the press conference nearly an hour after the match had ended during which Tendulkar had been felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association and then taken across the Wankhede aloft his team-mates’ shoulders. Rohit admitted seeing Tendulkar in whites for the last time was an unbearable moment for him. “Whatever he said on the field was a very emotional speech. We got were emotional. That shows his quality, he thanked each and everyone who supported him, stood behind him in his career. That really shows the great qualities of a great man,” he said.Hungry to get whatever he could out of observing his hero, Rohit did not blink much, afraid he would miss something. “What was happening around, I really didn’t know how to react. I was looking at him all the time, whatever was happening around us, I wasn’t focusing on that. Because I knew that this was the last time I’ll be watching him in the whites. I just wanted to get enough of Sachin Tendulkar so that when I got back home, there would be something to think about.”Now that Tendulkar has gone, the attention would shift to finding a fitting replacement to occupy the No.4 position in Tests, which Tendulkar held for such a long time. Virat Kohli, who has been batting at No.5 is the favourite to climb one rung but Rohit was not interested speculating and wanted to keep the focus still on Tendulkar. “I’m not at all thinking about that. What he has done for Mumbai cricket, Indian cricket is huge. I’ve just started my Test career; there is a long way to go. I just want to enjoy my time in the middle, whenever I get an opportunity I’ll try to do well. I’m really not thinking about what I have to do if I have to replace him. There’s still a long way to go, my career is just two Test matches old,” Rohit said.

Sri Lanka out to protect top ranking

Sri Lanka have been the top-ranked side since last year’s World Twenty20, and with the next global tournament approaching, it is a psychological fillip they want to retain

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando10-Dec-2013Match factsWednesday, December 11, 2013
Start time 2000 local (1600 GMT)Lasith Malinga’s fitness and form has been poor in recent games•Associated Press

Big PictureDuring the last 14 months, Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 matches have had a little more edge to them than most. They have been the top-ranked side since last year’s World Twenty20, and with the next global tournament approaching, it is a psychological fillip the captain Dinesh Chandimal is intent on protecting. A 0-2 loss will result in losing the top spot to Pakistan; a 1-1 result will lead to a reduction of a ranking point but Sri Lanka will stay No. 1; and a 2-0 win will bolster their position.Aside from the prospect of achieving the top rank, these two fixtures are important for Pakistan because they are their last scheduled matches before the World Twenty20 in March. There are key places in the top order and in the bowling attack that have not yet been firmed up, and the likes of batsmen Sohaib Maqsood and Sharjeel Khan, and seam-bowlers Bilawal Bhatti and Anwar Ali, will relish the opportunity to push themselves into the side.A victory in Cape Town after three straight losses to South Africa will have bred some confidence, but Pakistan’s squad is light on experience. While promising youngsters will likely be trialled, there is uncertainty about whether this team is up to toppling a consummate Twenty20 side like Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka will conduct experiments of their own as they seek a spin-bowling allrounder for Bangladesh. Chandimal had recently said Ramith Rambukwella was among Sri Lanka’s best Twenty20 spinners, and while Rambukwella’s varied offbreaks were effective on debut, he did little to allay his notoriety as an average fielder. His major competition will be legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna, who is fresh from a 32-ball 84 not out in List A cricket.Several Sri Lanka players have also spoken of the importance of beginning the tour well, given the paucity of international cricket in the recent past, but Pakistan appear to be carrying the most momentum into the first encounter.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka: WWLLW
Pakistan: WWLLLIn the spotlightThere is some thought that Sri Lanka’s batsmen are weak against left-armers of both varieties, and if Junaid Khan, Sohail Tanvir and Zulfiqur Babar all play on Wednesday, as they did against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka will find out if there is an issue that requires addressing. Sri Lanka’s batting unit has also had trouble adjusting to new bowlers in the past, and with plenty of young unknowns in Pakistan’s squad, that is another theory the hosts can test.Once the most feared limited-overs bowler in the world but lately an inconsistent performer, Lasith Malinga’s spells have grown more expensive as his gut has grown more cumbersome. Malinga does not need to be hyper-fit to crush toes and send stumps careening, but given he has collected only four wickets in his last eight Twenty20s, a good series here might re-establish him as one of the format’s premier stars.Team newsSaeed Ajmal was rested against Afghanistan and he may replace Babar, who had an expensive last outing. Nasir Jamshed has been omitted from the Twenty20 squad, which means Sharjeel Khan is likely to partner Ahmed Shehzad at the top of the innings again.Pakistan (probable): 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Sharjeel Khan, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 4 Sohaib Maqsood, 5 Umar Akmal (wk), 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Umar Amin, 8 Bilawal Bhatti/Zulfiqur Babar, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Junaid KhanMahela Jayawardene remained at home for the limited-overs series, which means Kusal Perera is almost certain to open the innings alongside Tillakaratne Dilshan. Rambukwella may be preferred to Prasanna for the first match.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal (capt), 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Thisara Perera, 7 Ramith Rambukwella/Seekkuge Prasanna 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Ajantha MendisStats and trivia Malinga averages 40.50 per wicket in six Twenty20s in 2013, his worst yearly average. His economy rate remains good at 7.04.Pakistan have only won one of the last six Twenty20s at Dubai International stadiumQuotes”We leaked quite a few runs against Afghanistan so we will have to be at our best to beat Sri Lanka and Ajmal’s return will help that.”
“We played really well in the last Twenty20 series. We’re still No. 1 in the world. We’ve got two Twenty20s in this tour, so we’ve got an eye on the ranking.”
