Big pictureWere it not for all the scandal and controversy that has rocked cricket this summer, Wednesday’s Rose Bowl decider between England and Pakistan would surely be seen as a fitting finale to a classic series. It is a testament to the pedigree of these two teams in one-day cricket that, despite the continuing rumblings, rumours, allegations and counter-allegations, they have managed to produce four watchable and absorbing contests and while there may well be further addition to the ongoing off-field saga ahead of the fifth and final match, the cricket itself will surely be of the highest standard.England were on the brink of pulling out of the series before the fourth match at Lord’s and the ECB announced that it would be taking legal action against Ijaz Butt, the chairman of the PCB, after his allegations that England’s players accepted a bribe to lose the third ODI at The Oval. But the tour has continued and after coming back from 2-0 down it seems increasingly apparent that Pakistan’s cricketers have been better able than England’s to maintain their focus amid a couple of hard-fought encounters.Admittedly, Pakistan have relied largely on the personal brilliance of Umar Gul, who took 10 wickets in the two victories, to put them in this position. But Gul’s performances have also had a noticeable effect on the rest of the team and amid the controversy Pakistan have rallied to seize the momentum. Kamran Akmal appears a changed man after his horrific form in Tests this summer, the batting order as a whole has grown in confidence and Shoaib Akhtar has defied age and injury with a string of consistent performances. Add to that Abdul Razzaq and Shahid Afridi’s destructive batting and allround ability and Saeed Ajmal’s guile, and Pakistan look like formidable opponents.England, on the other hand, seem jaded at the end of a long and arduous summer and it will surely be a relief to get this final match out of the way, whatever the result. England have dominated five series across three formats this season but a chaotic and controversial end would hardly be the best preparation ahead of a challenging winter in Australia. England will want to end on a positive note, but will be even more desperate to move on as quickly as possible once it is all over.Form guide (last five completed matches)England LLWWW
Pakistan WWLLWWatch out for…Andrew Strauss has led England from the front all summer, appearing an assured, attacking captain and a batsman of increasing authority in all formats. Strauss will recognise the importance of a series win despite the overwhelming clamour of off-field distractions in recent days and his sparkling form makes him a vital component at the top of the order.Umar Gul is currently without equal with an old, reverse-swinging ball in his hands in one-day cricket, and his potency was further increased under lights in the two London encounters. Perhaps crucially, the decider will also be a day/night affair and if Pakistan bat first once again – and the batsmen can scrap their way to a competitive total – Gul could well be Pakistan’s hero once more.Team newsPaul Collingwood has endured droughts and lean runs in the past, but he has appeared so woefully out of nick in recent games that he is a strong candidate for a rest with more important challenges ahead in the coming months. Luke Wright and Ravi Bopara are both primed to push for his spot in the middle order, but England are otherwise a settled unit.England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Steve Davies (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Michael Yardy, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonPakistan have struck a winning combination and, barring injury, are likely to stick with the same starting XI. Shoaib Akhtar appeared to be struggling with a side strain towards the end of his spell at Lord’s, but the word from the Pakistan camp is that he is fit to play in Wednesday’s decider.Pakistan (probable) 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Fawad Alam, 6 Umar Akmal, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Abdul Razzaq, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Shoaib AkhtarPitch and conditionsThe Rose Bowl had a reputation as a seamer’s paradise in its early years, but the pitch has settled down considerably since then. The last ODI at the ground, between England and Australia in June, was a reasonably high-scoring affair featuring an Eoin Morgan ton and some tap for the spinners on both sides. With fine weather in prospect, the challenge of batting under lights will be less daunting than it might otherwise have been, although – it being late September and all – temperatures are likely to be on the low side once again.Stats and Trivia Andrew Strauss has been in top form this summer, with 1,122 international runs since Bangladesh visited in May. While his Test form has been reasonable, Strauss’s transformation into an attacking limited-overs opener has been remarkable, and he’s scored 781 runs in 13 games, including two hundreds and a top score of 154. He’s also hit 12 of his 30 international sixes this summer.
If Pakistan bowl under lights, Umar Gul will surely be their most potent weapon. He has 45 wickets in the second innings of day/night ODIs at 21.20 as compared to his career average of 26.32. He now averages 17.92 in ODIs against England.
Despite Gul’s night-time prowess, Pakistan will have to overcome a statistical trend if they are to win bowling second at the Rose Bowl. Three of the four day/night ODIs played there have been won by the side batting second, including Pakistan on their last visit in 2006.
Quotes”I’ve got to give a lot of credit to my players for the professional manner they went about their business, and ultimately I’m very proud of them from that point of view. I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the players from both sides for doing that.”

“The boys really performed to the best of their ability, and this is what Pakistan is really all about. We are here to play good cricket.”

Rangers: Weston could be new McCoist

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has given the Glasgow Rangers’ youth players a chance at Ibrox since replacing Steven Gerrard back in November.

In his very first press conference, the Dutchman mentioned that chances would be given to players regardless of age, and so far, he has stuck by that mantra in his six months in charge.

Opportunities have fallen to youth starlets such as Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann, with the two being deployed in the earlier stages of the Scottish Cup to great effect.

Lowry came on for Ianis Hagi against Stirling Albion and made an immediate impact, scoring in front of a raucous Ibrox crowd.

Meanwhile, former Manchester United youngster McCann emerged from the bench in the next round against Annan Athletic and suitably impressed.

This has led many to push for young striker Tony Weston to be given a chance in the first team, especially considering the fact Alfredo Morelos is out for the rest of the season through injury.

Weston signed for Rangers from Blackpool in the summer of 2020 on a three-year contract and has continued to impress ever since – scoring goals aplenty for the B team – 21 in the Scottish Lowland League alone this season – and pushing towards a first-team opportunity.

Rangers youth coach Steven Smith sang his praises earlier on in the season, dubbing him “clinical” following a double against Dalbeattie Star.

These goals have given the striker the perfect platform to impress Van Bronckhorst with the final furlong of the season approaches.

And, considering his impressive goalscoring record for the B team, Rangers could well have the next 355-goal Ally McCoist in their midst, and if Weston was even half the player that Super Ally was, then the Gers have got something special on their hands.

Spurs: Gold drops Eriksen claim

Alasdair Gold has dropped an update on the future of reported Tottenham Hotspur summer transfer target Christian Eriksen.

What’s the talk?

In a recent video posted on YouTube, the football.london journalist revealed that Spurs have been in discussions regarding the possibility of bringing the 30-year-old central midfielder back to north London on a free transfer this summer.

Speaking about Spurs’ interest in the Denmark international, Gold said: “He would fit in there like a glove, in [Antonio] Conte’s 3-5-2, as he did with Inter Milan. He would bring so much to Tottenham.

“I know Spurs have spoken, have had discussions about bringing him in as a free agent – as in amongst themselves. I think there’s going to be a queue of competition for him.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

“I don’t think he left Spurs on the best of terms with the hierarchy at the club. But, he does love the club and he wants to stay in London, from what I understand, with his family.

“And it’s quite funny that Conte, when he just signed for Brentford, was very clear – no subtlety about it whatsoever – that he wanted to bring in Eriksen, maybe this summer.”

Supporters will love Gold’s claim

Considering just how impressive Eriksen has been following his return to the Premier League in January, coupled with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful’s undying love for the 30-year-old, the news Spurs are considering a move for the midfielder this summer is sure to be a claim that supporters will love.

Indeed, over his seven Premier League appearances for Brentford, the £13.5m-rated maestro has been in breathtaking form for Thomas Frank’s side, scoring one goal, registering two assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 2.1 key passes and taking 1.9 shots per game.

These returns have seen the Dane average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.49, not only ranking him as the Bees’ best performer in the league but also as the third-best player in the division as a whole – above the likes of Mohamed Salah, Son Heung-min and Mason Mount.

As such, considering his history with both Tottenham and Conte, his undoubted ability with the ball and the fact he will be available to sign on a free, it is clear to see why Spurs would be interested in a deal to bring Eriksen back to the club this summer – as he very much looks to be the type of player the 52-year-old manager is desperately lacking in the middle of the park.

Australia run out of focus

No moment highlighted Australia’s fall from world beaters to stragglers more than when Shane Watson’s knee stopped a certain run-out

Friendly fire: Shane Watson grimaces after being struck by Michael Clarke’s throw in Sydney•AFP

No moment highlighted Australia’s fall from world beaters to stragglers more than when Shane Watson’s right knee stopped a certain run-out on Friday night. Watson’s leg wasn’t the only thing being blamed and the slapstick incident had its owner smiling, in frustration and humour, after arriving in Brisbane today. For the past two decades Australia have been so well drilled in the field, but when Upul Tharanga ended up at Kumar Sangakkara’s end the locals fell apart. And it was not the fresh faces who lapsed, but three seriously senior men. When Brad Haddin collected the ball all he needed was a vaguely accurate lob to the bowler’s end, but he overshot wildly. Michael Clarke backed up well and then made the mistake of aiming at the stumps instead of sending the ball to Watson, or running up to remove the bails himself. While the throw was on target, Watson was too slow to move and was struck an embarrassing, but not painful, blow on the leg. As the ball rolled away from the stumps, Tharanga finally regained his ground and went on to an unbeaten 86.”I thought I was involved in a game of brandy with a cricket ball,” Watson said. “Next time I need to get out of the way.” Clarke hasn’t offered Watson a free shot as payback, but the blow hasn’t changed Watson’s belief that Clarke is the best man to lead the team in Ricky Ponting’s absence on Sunday.Australia have lost seven games in a row in the game’s three forms but the missed-run-out episode, played over only a couple of seconds, was a snapshot of how deep the problems have become. In the past the team’s batting has stumbled and the bowling has been loose, which are often forgivable offences. Results in the field have always been non-negotiable.Even before Mike Young, the former baseball coach, joined the squad to refine techniques, the work of the fielders was expected to be perfect. The area was used as the team’s performance barometer, but as the side’s Test ranking has slipped and its one-day reputation has eroded, the pressure they now place on the opposition is seriously low.Watson insists Australia aren’t far off clicking and, like most of the players in the squad, believes their efforts have been close to the standard required. But if they can’t win on Sunday it will be the first time the national outfit has been defeated in eight matches in a row.”It’s not an ideal situation for the games we’ve lost over the last little while, but it is a new era of Australian cricket,” he said. “Let’s hope we can come together and make sure it is a successful period. It hasn’t been for the last little while, but we know we’re not far away from getting it right. So we hope people stick by us.”Watson will open at the Gabba – he still calls it his home ground despite moving to New South Wales last year – and will be particularly wary of the Sri Lanka seamers in the bowler-friendly conditions. The visiting fast men have gained significant movement in the opening two matches to hold Australia to 210 on Friday and 8 for 239 on Wednesday.”The Sri Lankans have bowled very well, especially Nuwan Kulasekara and Lasith Malinga with the new ball,” he said. “It’s been hard to get them away. Let’s hope they get carried away tomorrow night [in the conditions].” Only recently have Australian teams had to start hoping for opposition mistakes.

Celtic must axe McCarthy and Soro

Celtic once again have the chance to make some changes to their squad when the upcoming summer transfer window opens for business.

In terms of what deals the Parkhead club should be looking to do, we think this period is the ideal time for them to get rid of two current figures in Ange Postecoglou’s squad – James McCarthy and Ismaila Soro.

Soro’s struggles at Celtic

Taking into account how Soro has only played three minutes of Premiership action since September, it’s safe to say that he is not particularly high in the pecking order at this moment in time.

If there is little sign of that changing for the remainder of the season, then the club should definitely consider cashing in on the Ivorian if possible.

Back in February 2021, former Hoops boss Neil Lennon revealed that the midfielder was “struggling with fatigue,” but it may now be the Celtic supporters who are tired of him still being in the squad.

Soro’s overall performances in the league this season have earned the 23-year-old a rather disappointing overall rating of 6.25/10, making him one of the lowest-rated players in the squad according to WhoScored.

Having been linked with a move away from Scotland in January, it seems likely that he could be on the move during the upcoming transfer window.

McCarthy also having a tough time

As for McCarthy, even though he only put pen to paper on a four-year deal last August, the Irishman’s place at the club should be in question.

With just nine Premiership appearances and four starts to his name, the midfielder has failed to impress in the current campaign, just like Soro.

In those league games, the 31-year-old has recorded more fouls (seven) than crosses (five), interceptions (four) or tackles (six), making him somewhat of a liability.

Labelled a “terrible flop” in the past by outspoken Irish pundit Eamon Dunphy, McCarthy is close to regaining that unfortunate billing unless he can show before the end of the campaign that he can offer something to the team, rather than holding them back along with Soro.

Should the Hoops end up waving goodbye to one or both of these midfield strugglers this summer, they will definitely need to ensure that they bring in some suitable replacements so that the squad has enough depth to attack the 2022/23 campaign.
