Steve O’Keefe’s dramatic rise from New South Wales fringe player has continued with him replacing Nathan Hauritz in Australia’s Test squad for the two games against Pakistan. O’Keefe, a left-arm spinner, impressed with nine wickets in Australia A’s two matches with Sri Lanka A over the past two weeks to gain an unexpected promotion.Nathan Hauritz was sent home with a foot injury suffered in the opening ODI against England, leaving the legspinner Steven Smith to eye a Test debut in the opening match at Lord’s from July 13. O’Keefe, 25, is also from New South Wales and he stood out in the opening “A” fixture this month by taking 7 for 35 and scoring 61 and 47.Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said O’Keefe deserved his chance. “Stephen has performed strongly in the recent Australia A series against Sri Lanka A in Queensland and is a good young all-round cricketer,” he said. However, he has played only eight first-class matches and was a surprise selection for Australia A, gaining a spot while Victoria’s Jon Holland and Tasmania’s Jason Krejza had off-season surgery. O’Keefe was born in Malaysia and spent two years there before his father, who worked for the Royal Australian Air Force, was posted back home. When he spoke to Cricinfo last week O’Keefe said he was hoping the “A” series would set him up for next summer at New South Wales, where he is one of seven slow bowlers fighting for a spot. “From my point of view I can’t really rest, knowing those guys are around,” he said. “A couple have played Test cricket, one will, there are some young guys, who knows how good they could be?” O’Keefe is now an outside chance to show his wares to the wider world.

Eduardo Batista elogia determinação do elenco da Ponte Preta

GSBK promise West Ham summer signings

David Moyes has been promised a number of summer signings by the West Ham United hierarchy.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Dean Jones, with the transfer insider revealing in a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT that, after failing to land a single target in the January transfer window, David Gold, David Sullivan, Karren Brady and Daniel Kretinsky have promised the 58-year-old manager that he will be backed to land his priority transfer targets this summer.

Speaking about West Ham’s summer business, Jones said: “I think, from what I understand, that there’s an absolute promise that, in the summer, they attack the market properly and they really do give [Moyes] what he wants, and they work closely together to make sure it happens.”

Too little too late

If there is one thing West Ham fans learned during the January transfer window, it is that words are cheap.

Indeed, Moyes continually stated throughout the month that he was hoping to land a new centre-back following the season-ending ACL injury sustained by Angelo Ogbonna, a new centre-forward to provide backup and competition for the injury-prone Michail Antonio and a new left-back in order to bring greater depth behind Aaron Cresswell in the position.

Furthermore, the Scotsman also made it clear that the West Ham board would be willing to heavily back him in the winter market, in order for the 58-year-old to attract the calibre of player that would not only plug the gaps in his first-team squad but either improve upon or severely strengthen his current options in a particular position.

However, despite all of the above, the Irons appeared to leave the vast majority of their January business until the final days of the market, seeing late £50m offers for both Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips rejected by Leeds United, making Benfica an offer totalling £58m for Darwin Nunez – despite the fact the centre-forward had no interest in joining the club – failing to stump up the fee required to get a deal for Marseille centre-back Duje Caleta-Car over the line and missing out on the 11th-hour signing of Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata as the required paperwork was not completed before the transfer deadline.

As a result of these failed bids – many of which could well be perceived as being token offers to appease a concerned West Ham fanbase – Moyes’ squad remains seriously short in a number of key areas, something which very much damages the Irons’ chances of securing a top-four finish this season – with failing to do so being an outcome that would all but confirm the likes of Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen pushing for a move away this summer.

As such, while it is all well and good for the West Ham board to come out in February stating their ambitions for the summer transfer window, their failures in January mean their latest transfer promise will come as being too little too late for the London Stadium faithful.

Leeds: Roberts has had a shocking season

With just 23 points on the board from 23 played league games so far this season, Leeds United are in danger of being dragged into a tense relegation battle if they don’t manage to rack up some positive results on a more consistent basis.

One player that has had a particularly disappointing campaign with the Yorkshire club, especially from an attacking point of view, is Tyler Roberts.

Since making the move to Elland Road back in the 2018 January transfer window from West Bromwich Albion in a deal worth a reported fee of around £2.5m, the Welshman has made a total of 106 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with nine goals and 10 assists along the way.

With 21 league appearances under his belt so far in the current league campaign, the 23-year-old has only managed to score one goal and provide one assist, giving him a goal frequency of one every 928 minutes, which hasn’t really helped the team on a consistent basis whilst Patrick Bamford has been out injured.

As well as the lack of regular goals and assists, Roberts’ overall performances have been rather disappointing as well, with WhoScored giving him a rating of 6.36, making him one of the lowest-rated Leeds players to have started more than one league game, showing just how much he has let Marcelo Bielsa down.

According to SofaScore, the attacker, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £22k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has lost possession 6.2 times per game, rack up a passing accuracy percentage of 74% and win just 46% of the duels he’s been involved in.

With all of that in mind, it’s easy to see why former Aston Villa attacker Gabby Agbonlahor previously claimed that it’s “shocking” how many times Leeds’ attacking moves keep breaking down when Roberts is on the ball.

Also, after being offered a three-year contract at the club back in the summer which he signed, his performances this season have not exactly justified such a deal in our view.

Moving forward, unless the former West Brom youngster can start to perform consistently for the Whites and get some goals or assists under his belt, he could find game time rather hard to come by in the future.

Finn fails to fire as Middlesex slump to defeat

Struggling Gloucestershire virtually ended Middlesex’s hopes of reaching the Friends Provident t20 quarter-finals by beating them by six wickets with four balls to spare at Uxbridge

11-Jul-2010
ScorecardStruggling Gloucestershire virtually ended Middlesex’s hopes of reaching the Friends Provident t20 quarter-finals by beating them by six wickets with four balls to spare at Uxbridge. The match saw Steven Finn return to the Middlesex team for the first time since he bowled England to victory in the second Test against Bangladesh at Old Trafford in June but he conceded 30 runs in two overs and was promptly withdrawn from the firing line.Finn was struck for five fours and a six as William Porterfield and Aaron Redmond launched Gloucestershire’s pursuit of a target of 186 with an opening partnership of 78 in seven overs. Neil Dexter, the Middlesex captain, stemmed the flow of runs by bowling Redmond and having Hamish Marshall caught behind in the space of seven balls.Porterfield, who had hit 64 off 32 balls with three sixes and seven fours, was then unluckily run out when Franklin’s drive was deflected into the stumps at the bowler’s end but Franklin and Chris Taylor regained the initiative with a fourth wicket stand of 61 in six overs.Middlesex, beaten by Hampshire on the same club ground the day before, owed their total to Dawid Malan’s 86 off 44 balls, including six sixes and five fours, after they had made another poor start, losing David Warner and Jackson Thompson inside the first four overs.Warner, the Australia Twenty20 specialist, who has made only 188 runs in 11 innings for Middlesex, was caught and bowled by Steve Kirby for one and Thompson, an India-born left-hander who once played for Gloucestershire, was caught at extra cover off Anthony Ireland for 14.Owais Shah gave the innings some momentum, following his 80 against Hampshire with 27 off 19 balls including a six and four fours before he was brilliantly caught on the midwicket boundary by Gemaal Hussain off Richard Dawson, and then Neil Dexter joined Malan in a fourth wicket partnership of 85 in eight overs.Dexter had struck 38 off 30 balls with two sixes and two fours when he was well caught by Porterfield, leaping high in front of the sightscreen, off Kirby and Middlesex were on course for 200 until they failed to make the most of the closing overs.Tyron Henderson was caught by Marshall running in from long on off Ireland and three wickets went down in the last over with Scott and Smith running themselves out and Malan bowled when making room to hit Kirby through the offside.

Newcastle team news on Trippier v Wolves

Craig Hope has now dropped another injury blow for Newcastle United before they play Wolves at home in the Premier League on Friday night.

The Lowdown: Willock an injury doubt

As per The Daily Mail journalist via Twitter, Joe Willock is now a ‘doubt’ for the Magpies’ game against Bruno Lage’s team with an injury to his knee.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-4/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Hope claimed that it could open the door for Bruno Guimaraes to start his first game at St James’ Park.

The Latest: Trippier injury update

According to Hope via Twitter, Kieran Trippier will also miss Friday’s match as well as Newcastle’s next league fixture at home to Leicester City, but there is hope that the defender could still return later this month.

The journalist outlined: “Also understand Kieran Trippier will miss Wolves & Leicester but there remains hope he’ll be back this month.”

The Verdict: Big blow for Newcastle

After Trippier was seen stepping up his recovery in Dubai, it was hoped that he could return earlier in April. However, the fact that he will now miss their next two games is a big blow for Newcastle.

The right-back has statistically been the Magpies’ best performer in the Premier League so far this season, averaging more tackles, interceptions and crosses per game than any of his team-mates (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, the Tynesiders will not feel safe from relegation just yet, so Eddie Howe will now have to find a way to try and get as many points as possible from their next two matches without Trippier in the team.

Chilton and Smith dig in for Lancashire

Diligent batting by Tom Smith and Mark Chilton dug Lancashire out of trouble in the County Championship Division One match with Hampshire at the Rose Bowl

Diligent batting by Tom Smith and Mark Chilton dug Lancashire out of trouble in the County Championship Division One match with Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.Lancashire, the only unbeaten team in the championship, started their second innings 86 in arrears and facing a grim battle for survival. Their plight worsened in the fourth over when left arm pace bowler James Tomlinson found a gap in the defences of opener Paul Horton and bowled him. This left Lancashire eight for one and it was then that Smith and Chilton came together in a gritty unbroken stand of 98 for the second wicket to halt Hampshire’s charge. Smith, who only five times previously had reached the half-century mark, ended the third day 60 not out while Chilton, no less vigilant, was unbeaten with 32.At the close Lancashire were 106 for 1 from 52 overs, a precarious lead of 20 after Smith and Chilton had begun the repair job. Hampshire were held up in the first instance by the effects of overnight rain which wiped 16 overs from the day’s allocation. They began the day four runs ahead of the Lancashire first innings total at 287 for 6 and were in no mood to let Lancashire back into the game. Lancashire captain Glen Chapple quickly removed debut-making Michael Bates and David Balcombe but former Lancashire all-rounder and now Hampshire captain Dominic Cork engineered a spirited tail-end resistance.Tomlinson helped Cork put on 48 for the ninth wicket before Gary Keedy dismissed Tomlinson and Danny Briggs. Cork was left unbeaten with 54 from 79 balls, helping Hampshire build an impressive first innings lead of 86.Chapple took 4 for 68 and Keedy claimed 4 for 56 as Hampshire were eventually all out for 369. The early loss of Horton caused more problems for Lancashire but Smith and Chilton spent the next 48 overs making sure there were no further successes for Hampshire.Smith’s innings has so far occupied 155 balls and Chilton’s has taken him another 147 but the value to Lancashire in the circumstances was immense. Left arm spinner Briggs bowled 19 of the 52 overs so far in the Lancashire innings but there was little in the wicket to help him compared with the exaggerated movement of the first day.Lancashire’s careful second-wicket pair took their side to the 100 mark in the 48 overs but it needed 39 before the deficit was eradicated.
