Conte drops Romero injury update

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major injury boost concerning Cristian Romero.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Tottenham Hotspur website, Antonio Conte revealed that the 23-year-old centre-back, who suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty with Argentina back in November last year, is on course for a return to first-team football later on this month.

Speaking about the defender’s recovery, the Spurs manager said: “Everything is going in the right way with Cristian. For us, he’s an important player. It was a pity that he suffered a serious injury with his national team. We hope for him to recover very soon. I hope to have him available at the end of this month.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Romero has been since his £42.5m move to Spurs last summer, the news that the centre-back looks on course to make a return to action this month is sure to have left the Tottenham Hotspur faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over his seven Premier League appearances so far this season, the £31.5m-rated defender has helped his side keep one clean sheet, as well as making an average of 1.7 interceptions – the most of any Spurs player in the current campaign – 2.3 tackles, 2.4 clearances, 40.7 passes and winning a whopping 69% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the £29k-per-week man average a rather extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.15, ranking him as Conte’s fifth-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, it is clear for all to see that the sooner Romero makes a return the better for Tottenham, meaning that the 52-year-old Italian’s recent update regarding the centre-back is undoubtedly fantastic news for everyone involved with the club.

Agora é tocar a oportunidade.

Celtic: Alan Hutton reacts to Johnny Kenny swoop

Pundit Alan Hutton has been reacting to Celtic’s rumoured swoop for teenage striker Johnny Kenny, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Hoops set to pip Hibs

The Hoops were first linked with a move for the 18-year-old way back in September, shortly after the summer window slammed shut.

Since then, Celtic have kept tabs on the Sligo Rovers man and were set to battle Hibernian for his services.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It appears as if they will pip Hibs in the race for the forward during the January transfer window, with reports earlier in the week claiming a move is now just days away from, being finalised.

The Latest: Hutton hails ‘massive’ move

Hutton, who regularly features on BBC Radio 5 Live, was talking to Football Insider regarding Celtic’s move for Kenny.

He labelled it as ‘massive’ for such a young player to be wanted by both Old Firm clubs, making it a huge coup for the Hoops to have won the race.

“For an 18-year-old, for Rangers or Celtic to want you is massive. It’s a massive opportunity to come play for one of the biggest clubs.

“He’s only 18, you would think he would go into the Celtic youth setup. Then there would be a chance to move up to the first team.

“For Hibs, it’s a bitter blow. I read that they had him over as a VIP guest. You would think they would integrate him into their first team.

“It just shows you the lure of Rangers and Celtic. He is willing to go and play can B-team football, if you want, instead of SPFL’s top league.

“It’s one of those, you totally understand his decision. It’s a great opportunity for him.

“But he is going to have to give it his all to try and prove to Ange Postecoglou he’s ready to be involved in the first team.”

The Verdict: Exciting long-term addition

Should Celtic officially sign Kenny, you’d expect he’d go straight into the club’s B side with a view to progressing into Ange Postecoglou’s plans over the coming years.

It shows a sign of the Hoops thinking long-term under the Aussie, and a move could turn out to be just as important as the arrival of senior forward Daizen Maeda in the long run.

Kenny has scored 12 goals in 34 appearances for Sligo Rovers, so he may well hit the ground running for the reserves in 2022.

Northern Districts set date with Auckland

Northern Districts secured their place against Auckland in the finals of the one-day competition with an 83-run win over Central Districts

Cricinfo staff17-Feb-2010Powered by fifties to Kane Williamson and Daniel Flynn, defending champions Northern Districts secured their place against Auckland in the finals of the one-day competition with an 83-run win over Central Districts in Whangarei. Having suffered defeat to Auckland in a one-sided contest last week, ND got their act together and will hope to repeat this success over Auckland when they take on the hosts in the final on February 21.Jamie How’s decision to field did not go to plan. Flynn, out of favour with New Zealand’s selectors, got ND’s innings off to a 72-run start alongside Michael Parlane (27), and when joined by Williamson set about forging a match-winning partnership. The pair put on 112 with Williamson the dominant partner. Flynn’s dismissal for 81 from 101 balls at 172 for 2 was followed by a period where CD’s bowlers took three wickets for 56 runs, including dismissing Williamson for a 98-ball 84, but James Marshall and Peter McGlashan finished the innings strongly. The last two overs cost 25 as ND finished on 284 for 6.How came out blazing and helped CD reply with a 72-run stand of their own, with George Worker’s 53-ball 21 holding up one end. But the pair was separated within five runs of each other, How following Worker for 51 from 41 balls. Bradley Scott and Anton Devcich kept the pressure on the middle and lower orders – CD slipped from 103 for 3 in the 24th over to 136 for 6 by the 34th – and there was only further resistance from Mathew Sinclair; one he was bowled by Scott for 54 at 180 for 7 the rest of the innings folded for 201.

Tottenham: Napoli offered Tanguy Ndombele

Napoli have been offered the chance to sign Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, according to Calciomercato.com.

The Lowdown: On-air Sky Sports claim

Sky Sports recently provided an on-air update regarding Tottenham’s club-record signing.

They suggested that Ndombele would ‘consider’ a move elsewhere during the January transfer window, however, they described a possible exit as ‘complex’ due to his contract situation.

Italian and Spanish clubs have held talks regarding a swoop for the 25-year-old, and it seems as if Fabio Paratici has now offered Ndombele, who Jose Mourinho labelled as ‘magnificent’, to a specific Serie A side.

The Latest: Napoli link

Calciomercato.com shared a story on Thursday lunchtime, revealing Ndombele isn’t part of Antonio Conte’s plans.

As a result, Spurs have offered the Frenchman’s services to Napoli, however, Ndombele’s salary is ‘definitely’ out of reach for the Serie A side.

The Verdict: Sell

Ndombele was open to an exit over the summer, and his view seemingly hasn’t changed in 2022, so Paratici should be looking to sell over the coming weeks.

The central midfielder has started just ten games in all competitions this season, with just one of those coming under Conte in the Premier League.

He’s picking up a whopping £200,000-a-week in north London – the joint-most at the club – and hasn’t been a key player under Conte, and if the Italian is willing to sell, that’s what should happen before the month is out.
