Journalist makes key Alfredo Morelos claim

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is happy at Ibrox despite rumours linking him with a move away, according to journalist Michael Bridge.

The Lowdown: Morelos a modern Rangers hero

The Gers have had numerous heroes down the years, whether it be Richard Gough, Ally McCoist or many other iconic Ibrox figures.

Morelos has arguably been the star man at the club in recent times, with his feisty personality complimented by goalscoring prowess.

The 25-year-old has scored 105 goals in 208 appearances for the Gers, playing a key role in them winning the Premiership title last season.

The Latest: Journalist makes key claim

Morelos has been linked with a move away from the Gers, but speaking to Give Me Sport, Bridge claimed that his future looks set to belong at Ibrox.

The journalist said: “He’s always linked with other clubs, but he’s never moved away. He seems happy, he’s kind of settled down. There was one season where he had five red cards.”

The Verdict: Huge player moving forward

Losing Morelos would be a huge blow for Giovanni van Bronckhorst, with the striker being such a regular source of goals and leading the line superbly, having been hailed as ‘fantastic’ by his former manager Steven Gerrard.

Granted, the Colombian hasn’t always been a saint, but the hope is that he is maturing with age and will become an even more rounded individual in years to come. Having been sent off six times in the 2018/19 campaign, he has been shown just two red cards in almost two-and-a-half years since (Transfermarkt), so it seems that he has cleaned up his act.

Morelos will likely have a massive role to play in the title race between now and the end of the season, as he looks to add to his six league goals in 2021/22.

In other news, one player is ‘definitely’ a Rangers transfer target. Read more here.

Lahore Ravi crush Quetta for first win

A round-up of the third day’s action of the seventh round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2009-10

Cricinfo staff17-Nov-2009Group BQuetta were pushed to the bottom of the table after sinking to a ten-wicket defeat to Lahore Ravi in a basement battle at the Lahore City Cricket Association ground. The match had been evenly balanced after two days, and Quetta started the third day well, removing Lahore’s final two wickets in three overs, keeping the deficit to 48. Their batsmen flopped though, slumping to 108 all out, with only Ata-ur-Rehman making more than 25. Lahore’s new-ball bowlers, Junaid Zia and Waqas Ahmed, shared seven wickets to roll over Quetta in 30 overs. Lahore’s openers then knocked off the 61 needed for victory in less than 15 overs to confirm their first win of the season. In another battle between struggling teams, Peshawar were struggling to stave off defeat against Islamabad at the National Ground. Set a tall target of 393 with more than 140 overs to play, Peshawar were hanging on at 249 for 7 at stumps. Opener Israrullah top scored with a hurricane 82, with a huge 66 of those runs coming in boundaries. Several of his team-mates, adopting a more measured approach, got off to starts but none went on make even a half-century. Peshawar’s hopes of surviving are now pinned on No. 6 Azam Jan, who is unbeaten on 40.At the Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot’s batsmen made amends for their first-innings failure by piling on 493 for 9 against Rawalpindi. Mohammad Ayub batted all through the day to remain unbeaten on 179, the highest score of his career. It was a hard slog for the Rawalpindi bowlers as he strung together several large partnerships: 103 for the fifth wicket with Ayaz Tasawwar, 108 with Nayyer Abbas (65) for the sixth before ending the day with an unbroken 69-run stand with Bilawal Bhatti (41 off 24) for the ninth. His effort has pushed Sialkot’s lead to 385, virtually eliminating chances of a defeat.Multan took control of their match at the Gymkhana Ground by reducing Abbottabad to 156 for 8. The Multan tail wagged in the morning, with the final three wickets adding 68 runs, during which Mohammad Hafeez completed his century. That cut the first-innings deficit to 25 runs, after which Abbottabad’s Ghulam Mohammad (45) and Ehteshamuddin (39) guided their side to a relatively safe 135 for 3. A stunning collapse followed, four wickets going down for one run to put Multan on top.Table-topping Karachi Blues’ match against Faisalabad at the National Stadium witnessed a day of batting domination. No. 9 Tanvir Ahmed made the bulk of the runs for Karachi, smashing a 94-ball 88, to push Karachi to 401 from an overnight 293 for 8. The bowlers continued to have a hard time when Faisalabad batted; half-centuries to Ammar Mahmood and Zeeshan Asif taking the reply to a patient 188 for 4 by stumps.Group A
Having gained first-innings points the previous day, the Habib Bank Limited (HBL) bowlers, led by left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman, did well to restrict Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) to 230 for 8 at the Diamond Club Cricket Ground. Beginning on 248 for 9, the HBL batsmen lasted just nine balls, as Asad Ali finished with 7 for 98. Naeemuddin and Ali Waqas hit half-centuries as the SNGPL top order aimed for a bright start during the reply. But Abdur dented the middle and lower orders to leave them tottering at stumps, ahead by 226.Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) were in danger of losing their match against Karachi Whites at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex, despite gaining first-innings points. From their overnight score of 196 for 4, Karachi were boosted to 310 all out, courtesy Mohammad Hasan’s watchful 88. Having set WAPDA a target of 259, the Karachi fast bowling duo of Malik Aftab and Tabish Khan shared five wickets between them to damage the top order. At 152 for 6, WAPDA’s hopes rest heavily on wicketkeeper Ahmed Said, who is unbeaten on 48.Well-compiled hundreds by Imran Javed and captain Naumanullah steered National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) to first-innings points against Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) in Rawalpindi. Resuming on 174 for 3, both overnight batsmen went about overhauling KRL’s first-innings total of 353 in confident fashion. While Imran hit 18 fours and a six during his 321-ball 176, Naumanullah managed 12 boundaries during his 110 off 236 balls. The 263-run stand for the fourth wicket was enough for NBP as they finished on 398 all out. KRL left-arm spinner Nauman Ali had the consolation of a five-for.Lahore Shalimar’s woes at the bottom of the table continued as they conceded first-innings points to Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) at the Gaddafi Stadium. All the SSGC bowlers chipped in with useful contributions – most notably right-arm seamer Bilal Asad with 3 for 45 – as they bowled out Lahore for 307, 115 short of SSGC’s first-innings total. At stumps, SSGC were 90 for 2 with opener Asif Zakir (42) and Imran Abbas (25) at the crease.Kashif Daud’s 6 for 47 put Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limted (ZTBL) in pole position against Pakistan Customs at the Marghzar Cricket Ground. Customs’ resistance from 143 for 6 was over in 15 overs as they folded for 183, with right-arm fast bowler Daud adding three more to his overnight tally. Looking to build on their lead of 146, the ZTBL batsmen weighed in with good starts as they declared on 183 for 8. Chasing the target of 330, Customs lost wicketkeeper-captain Hanif Malik, trapped leg before by, who else, but Daud.

Gayle walks on air as West Indies fly back

Chris Gayle whipped up the fifth fastest century by balls faced in Test history as West Indies refused to be blown over on a dramatic and heated day in Perth

The Bulletin by Peter English17-Dec-2009West Indies 2 for 214 (Gayle 102, Dowlin 55) trail Australia 7 for 520 dec (Katich 99, Watson 89, Haddin 88, Hussey 82, North 68) by 306 runs

How they were outNo, Chris, we should be bowing at you: Gayle kneels down to mark his awesome century•Getty Images

Chris Gayle whipped up the fifth fastest century by balls faced in Test history as West Indies refused to be blown over on a dramatic and heated day in Perth. Gayle unleashed the controlled fury of a captain who had watched his bowlers struggle for penetration with a 70-ball hundred that catapulted his side to 2 for 214, a promising collection which still leaves them 306 behind.Australia felt chirpy after declaring at 7 for 520 but were soon silenced by Gayle’s hot blade as he clumped 102 within 25 overs. The WACA has hosted some brutal innings and this one probably included the biggest six at the ground, with one of his straight sixes off Nathan Hauritz landing on the roof of the towering Lillee-Marsh Stand. That rocket, which was powered by his charge down the pitch and a free-flowing swing, took him to 91 and it was appropriate that his century came with another six, this one sailing over the sightscreen. It was his fourth clearance off Hauritz and sixth of the innings, prompting him to drop to his knees for a praiseworthy celebration. Everyone watching deserved to be bowing down at him. After a hard-working, unbeaten 165 in Adelaide, which re-floated his side after their three-day defeat in Brisbane, Gayle followed up in his traditional style. This was a batsman preening and flexing, exterminating the frustration of time in the field.Sulieman Benn, the giant spinner with a seriously grumpy alter ego, had signalled that West Indies would not slip away meekly when he started a lengthy confrontation with Brad Haddin that ended with Mitchell Johnson pushing the bowler away. Gayle then showed the right sort of aggression for a modern cricket field, an innings containing defence and leaving with Twenty20-style explosions thrown in.Gayle is without two of his best batsmen – Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Adrian Barath are out injured – on a surface with a reputation for supporting fast bowlers. He didn’t care. His team might look fragile but he was not going to be pushed around. Four boundaries were taken in Johnson’s opening two overs to set Gayle’s tempo and he would calm down only momentarily. The debutant Clint McKay was initiated with a four in front of point first ball and returned after tea to be swatted down the ground and lifted for a six to long-on. Gayle barely followed through and with his score on 79 from 46 balls there was a chance he could tackle Viv Richards’ record of 56 deliveries. It didn’t happen but, like Adam Gilchrist’s 57-ball effort in Perth during the 2006-07 Ashes, it didn’t matter.Strokes that would usually wedge in the mind were replaced at the speed of a wedding-ceremony slideshow. When Gayle flicked Doug Bollinger over square leg to bring up his half-century from his 34th ball it seemed like the shot of the series. An effortless swing cleared the fence on one of the world’s biggest grounds and the batsman’s heart-rate would not have fluttered. More grunt followed the grace.Smart Stats

Australia’s total of 520 is the second-highest score that did not feature a single century. Only India’s score of 524 for 9 declared against New Zealand is ahead on the list and featured six fifties against Australia’s five.

Marcus North and Brad Haddin scored the 14th and 15th half-centuries for Australia in this series, but the hosts are yet to register a hundred.

Chris Gayle’s century was the fourth for the visitors in the same time.

If the Australian batsmen fail to register a century in the second innings, this would become only the ninth time that Australia have gone through a series of at least three matches without a century.

The 15 half-centuries Australia have scored is already the highest scored by any team in a Test series where it did not score any centuries.

The Australians were in shock and awe, especially Hauritz, who will do well not to have nightmares of Gayle’s right leg stepping down at him. Ricky Ponting kept Hauritz on hoping for a mis-hit, and there was an edge on 81 that was spilt by Michael Clarke at first slip. If Gayle missed a century it would have been a bigger crime than the physical confrontation of Benn and Johnson. He didn’t and after such carnage his dismissal was as weak as the winds in the eye of a storm, a limp waft at a short ball floating to Shane Watson at point. Bollinger was the bowler but the noise that followed was for Gayle’s innings of 72 deliveries, which also had nine forgotten fours. As he exited to the first ball of the 24th over he had all but 34 off his side’s 136.Travis Dowlin was the almost silent partner but his 55 was hugely valuable until he scooped a catch to gully off Johnson. By stumps the tourists had Ramnaresh Sarwan on 42 and Narsingh Deonarine on 10, while Johnson, McKay and Hauritz were left to tend their bruises. It was a day for runs, none of which went to Ponting. He did not bat due to his injured left elbow, but closed the innings midway through the second session after Haddin had built on the work of Watson, Simon Katich, Michael Hussey and Marcus North. On another day Haddin’s 88 from 91 balls would have been the most memorable and North’s confident 68 would have been discussed with appreciative nods. Sorry, but Gayle’s special circumstances relegated them to small mentions.Australia resumed the second day at 3 for 339 and quickly lost Hussey for 82, with Haddin soon doing his best to impersonate Gilchrist. Gayle did a better job, but Haddin’s collection was important in inflating Australia’s total, which is still intimidating despite West Indies’ forceful reply.Haddin threatened to become the first Australian of the series to score a hundred, but instead became the 15th local to reach a half-century during a purposeful innings that gained intensity with his elongated debate with Benn. The complicated exchange inadvertently brought in Johnson when the bowler pointed at Haddin and accidently brushed his partner’s shoulder. It had all begun when Haddin took offence at Benn and Johnson running into each other when the bowler was fielding in his follow-through. The ultimately harmless episode was an unnecessary and ugly period that showed both teams have some fight left after three weeks of play. It didn’t help Benn though, as he returned 1 for 87 off 28 overs, but added to the excitement of a breathless day.

Aston Villa must unleash Jaden Philogene-Bidace

With Steven Gerrard succeeding in turning things around at Aston Villa, his attentions will already be turning towards the January transfer window and the kinds of new signings that he could make to strengthen his squad.

And while the former Liverpool skipper would be right to cast his eye far and wide for those potentially game-changing additions, he might want to look closer to home to see someone who could really get Villa Park rocking: Jaden Philogene-Bidace.

The 19-year-old was in fine form last year for the club’s U23s, scoring five goals in just 14 games at Premier League 2 level, as well as providing three assists – that’s not to mention the superb hat-trick he scored on his England under-19 debut last November either.

His former coach Ahmed Abdulla has raved about his ability as an out-and-out winger, and judging by the coach’s comments, he seems perfectly ready to grab his opportunity in senior football.

Abdulla said: “He can come inside or go on the outside. The model winger. He hugs the touchline and can beat his man. (He’s) Very confident and very light on his feet and skips past tackles, not one of them that gets hit and goes down. He bounces off tackles. He’s very strong and outstanding in one-v-ones.”

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece recently indicated back when Dean Smith was in charge that while the winger is highly-rated, a January loan move could be on the horizon.

He said: “It’s crystal-clear that Philogene-Bidace remains highly thought of at Bodymoor Heath, his challenge now now is to stay patient and be ready when called upon.

“A Championship loan move could well be in the offing in January but, as it stands, Villa have a serious talent on their hands, one who’s primed and ready to make his mark in the Premier League.”

But with injuries and other issues no doubt taking its effect, handing an opportunity to one of the club’s brightest young prospects from the academy could be a sure-fire way to save a lot of money and get the fans excited too.

While much of the talk at Villa has been around Carney Chukwuemeka – which is understandable given his superb performances in the FA Youth Cup last season and recent game-time too – Philogene-Bidace could well be the academy starlet to become the club’s secret weapon heading into the new year.

Meanwhile, Villa have made this man their main target…

A invencibilidade cruz-maltina estava acabando.

Injured Laxman out of Bangladesh series

VVS Laxman will be returning to India from the two-Test series in Bangladesh after injuring his finger while dropping a catch in the first Test in Chittagong

Cricinfo staff21-Jan-2010VVS Laxman will be returning to India from the tour of Bangladesh after injuring his finger while dropping a catch in the first Test in Chittagong. But MS Dhoni, who missed the first Test due to a back strain, and Harbhajan Singh, who sat out due to a stiff neck, have recovered completely and are fit for the next game in Mirpur on January 24.”Laxman is returning home tomorrow. There will be no replacements,” Arshad Ayub, India’s team manager, said. Laxman dropped Bangladesh top-order batsman Shahriar Nafees on the fourth day and showed signs of pain when he tried to stop an outside edge that fell just short of him a few balls later. Laxman needed ten stitches on his left hand, and with India taking a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series, the decision to send him back home was taken. However, India will be boosted by the recovery of Harbhajan and Dhoni. Harbhajan bowled a long spell to Rahul Dravid on the center pitch immediately after the game ended, and Dhoni, who looks likely to take over the reins from stand-in captain Virender Sehwag, has been batting in the nets from yesterday.Sreesanth, too, sustained an injury on the final day of the Test, straining his hamstring, and was forced to walk off the field in the middle of an over to get some medical attention. “Sreesanth has a light strain on the hamstring. It’s too early to say the damage,” Ayub said.
