AVFC: Fabrizio Romano drops Leon Bailey update

Fabrizio Romano has shared some further details on Aston Villa’s pending move for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.

The Lowdown: Villa’s post

Villa posted on their official Twitter page on Saturday afternoon, revealing they have reached an agreement with the Bundesliga side for the 23-year-old.

A medical and finalising personal terms are still required before he Jamaican officially becomes an Aston Villa player, and Romano has shared when fans can expect a move to go through.

The Latest: Romano’s post

Romano, who has been on the ball this summer when it comes to Villa-related transfers with Emiliano Buendia and Jack Grealish’s possible exit, posted on Twitter on Saturday afternoon regarding Bailey.

The transfer expert believes a deal will cost Villa £30m and are offering Bailey a five-year deal in the Midlands.

He shared some further details on a potential move less than an hour on from Villa’s post, admitting a ‘medical and official announcement next week’ – a significant six-word update.

“Leon Bailey deal will be officially completed next week for £30m to Bayer Leverkusen. Aston Villa are offering Bailey a five-years contract, they’re set to reach the agreement on personal terms too. Medical and official announcement next week. What a deal for Villa.”

The Verdict: Brilliant business

Reports back in April suggested that Villa wanted two wide forwards ahead of the new season, and it seems as if they’ll be getting them in Buendia and Bailey.

Buendia was involved in 32 league goals last season, whereas Bailey contributed to 26 goals in all competitions.

Should Grealish depart for Manchester City in a £100m deal, at least Dean Smith will have two impressive wide men to call upon in Buendia and Bailey and Villa may even look to bring in more creative firepower to possibly replace the club captain.

In other news: ‘That’s a deal breaker’ – Lots of Villa fans go wild at ‘class’ club post.

Clancy: Demiral up for grabs this summer

Italian football expert Conor Clancy believes that Juventus defender Merih Demiral is up for grabs this summer.

Journalist Nicolo Schira reported in June that Demiral’s agents had spoken to Tottenham and that Juventus were asking for €40million for the defender, but also included that Everton had asked about him.

Demiral had a couple of injury problems last season and with that, he was limited to only making 15 appearances in Serie A for Juventus.

He is also competing for a starting berth with Matthijs De Ligt and the Italian centre-half pairing, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, with the latter, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, set to sign a new contract with Juventus until 2023.

With a plethora of talent amongst their defensive ranks, Demiral may have to move away to get more game time, and with rumoured interest in his signature this summer, Conor Clancy exclusively told Football FanCast: “I really rate him, I think as a defender he’s got the potential to have it all, he’s really, really good.

“When he played for Juve regularly, he was excellent, then an injury kind of messed him up and he’s not recovered since. I do think he needs a move, I do think he wants a move and with careful management, he could go somewhere and be an incredible defender again, but it’s all gone a bit stale for him at Juve unfortunately, so yeah, I think he’s up for grabs.”

Tottenham are targeting the centre-half position as an area they need to strengthen this summer. Toby Alderweireld has left to join Al-Duhail, while Spurs being linked with Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Karthik fifty gives Delhi renewed hope

Dinesh Karthik and the Delhi Daredevils’ misfiring middle order came good when it mattered to clinch a thrilling five-wicket victory and keep their semi-finals hopes alive. Coming in with the team wobbling at 89 for 4, Karthik blitzed a classy 32-ball 56 to take Delhi past the Mumbai Indians’ 176 with one ball to spare.Mumbai are three points behind Delhi and two behind the Chennai Super Kings, who have a game against the lowly Deccan Chargers, and may need to win both their remaining matches, including a tough one away against table-topping Rajasthan Royals, to make it to the final four. After Dwayne Smith took two-in-two in the eleventh over to put Mumbai on top, Karthik and Manoj Tiwary kept Delhi afloat with a 41-run stand. Karthik, using his feet to disconcert the slower bowlers, was the aggressor – he carved Smith past mid-off for four and then paddle-scooped him past short fine leg for another and then carted a Jaysuriya full toss into the crowd behind midwicket to ensure Delhi kept pace with the asking rate.Tiwary was run-out for a well-made 36 following a mix-up. At that stage, 47 were needed off 30 as Karthik was joined by Farveez Maharoof, whose big-hitting has already helped Delhi recover from several middle-order collapses. After a tidy over from Ashish Nehra, fifteen runs came off the next over from Dhawal Kulkarni, including a lovely six over backward square leg and an extra-cover drive for four. A down-the-pitch heave to the midwicket boundary off Jayasuriya and a delightful straight six off Andre Nel brought the equation down to eight from the final over. Two singles came off the first three balls as the tension ratcheted up. Maharoof, though, kept his nerve and smashed the fourth ball to the midwicket boundary and cut the next one to point for four to bring up the victory and leave the home fans delirious.Delhi will be even more satisfied with the win as their big guns fell early – Virender Sehwag provided a frenetic start with three fours and a rasping front-foot pull for six in the first over but was bowled by Nehra and Gautam Gambhir showed glimpses of the form that has made him the tournament’s leading scorer before skying a catch to Smith at midwicket.Shikhar Dhawan and Tiwary kept the required-rate in check collecting singles and punishing anything either wide or overpitched. Aided by some shoddy fielding, they had calmly progressed to 89 for 2 when Smith removed Dhawan and Tillakaratne Dilshan off successive deliveries to bring the Man of the Match Karthik to the crease. Before Karthik’s intervention, the leading candidate for Man of the Match was Jayasuriya. His assault gave Mumbai an explosive start to their innings but his team-mates failed to build on it and a fightback, led by Yo Mahesh who snared four wickets, from Delhi restricted them. Jayasuriya, typically scoring heavily square of the wicket, took Brett Geeves to task – a couple of leg-side boundaries in his first over were followed by an effortless slice over backward point for six and a powerful across-the-line shot past long-on for four.Mahesh was brought into the attack but two towering sixes and an edge past the wicketkeeper for four kept the run-rate galloping. Delhi’s semi-final hopes were further dented when Karthik, standing up to Maharoof, missed a leg-side stumping with Tendulkar overbalancing. The next ball was disdainfully swatted for six by Jayasuriya and the score read 70 for no loss after seven. The breakthrough came when Tendulkar inside-edged Mahesh onto his stumps and, with Maharoof sending down a clever mix of slower balls and yorkers, the brakes were applied. Amit Mishra, whose googlies the batsmen found hard to read, kept the runs in check but a poor over from Geeves released the pressure. Just as Mumbai seemed to have regained their momentum, they were again pegged back by Mahesh, who removed Smith. Mishra then picked up the big wicket of Jayasuriya, who perished attempting his sixth six and when the hard-hitting Abhishek Nayar fell four balls later, Mumbai had slipped to 114 for 4.It required Robin Uthappa’s stunning 23-ball 46 to lift them to a competitive score. Uthappa, who has flickered through this tournament, combined some delicate glides past third man with his signature paddle sweeps as well as some full-blooded blows over midwicket and long-on to plunder 31 runs off the last two overs.Uthappa’s late hitting, though, was overshadowed by Karthik’s and the win means Delhi will make it to the semi-finals if Chennai or Mumbai lose any of their remaining games.

Proposal for English IPL-style event

Three English counties and the MCC have drawn up a blueprint for a £50million Twenty20 tournament to rival the IPL, involving nine franchise-based teams at grounds that stage international matches in England

Three English counties and the MCC have drawn up a blueprint for a £50million Twenty20 tournament to rival the IPL, involving nine franchise-based teams at grounds that stage international matches in England. The plans, which are expected to be presented at an ECB board meeting next week, were prepared by Keith Bradshaw, the MCC chief executive, and David Stewart, the Surrey chairman, and have reportedly been approved by Lancashire and Hampshire as well. The ECB, however, has played down this suggestion, though Giles Clarke, its chairman, hinted at a discussion in the board meeting. In a joint statement, Bradshaw and Stewart said that they regretted that details of the proposal had reached the media before they had had a chance to present them to the ECB Board at their meeting on July 15, but did not apologise for the radical ideas that had been put forward in the discussion paper.”We decided to respond to the ECB’s request for further ideas about Twenty20, which the ECB made on May 7,” read the statement. “We make no apologies for preparing this board discussion paper, as we strongly believe that the idea of an English Twenty20 tournament, taking the best from the Indian Premier League and combining it with the strengths of the English game, is worthy of considerable debate and discussion.”The proposed tournament will contain 57 matches over 25 days at Lord’s, The Oval, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge, Headingley, Old Trafford, the Rose Bowl, Chester-le-Street and Cardiff. It has been earmarked for June and July 2010. The plan promises revenue for the clubs outside the nine venues as well as investment at grass-root level. The said the proposal suggested replacing the existing Pro40 tournament, and that projected earnings could be as high as £850m over ten years, a figure large enough to compensate counties for the loss of the Pro40.”We are naturally disappointed that the paper has leaked before the ECB Board can discuss it on July 15 … but we welcome the debate that will now take place,” the statement continued. “There has already been speculation about whether such a tournament can generate extra revenue for cricket. We are aware of significant interest from potential financial backers and are confident that a tournament, along the lines we set out in the paper, can generate considerable revenues for all 18 counties and the grass-roots of the game.”Until the details have been properly discussed, Bradshaw’s employers, the MCC, have decided to keep a watchful distance. “Bradshaw is an independent director of the ECB, and as such has every right to put forward his opinion,” wrote the club president, Mike Brearley, in his column in The Observer. “Any proposal coming from him is liable to be seen as an MCC initiative, and, as such, to have been discussed within the MCC and in particular on its committee. This proposal has not been discussed there, so it has no backing, as things stand, from the MCC. It might of course agree with and support the views expressed in the plan, but so far there has not been the chance either to do so or to disagree.”Further details suggest the proposed tournament will include an IPL-style bidding process, a salary cap and a ruling on the number of English youngsters who have to play. It’s reported that a squad would need to have 12 home-grown players, including three under 23, and must be within a budget of £1.5m. However, the most notable feature is the idea of city-based franchises, a departure from the current county set-up. The likes of Manchester would take on Birmingham instead of Lancashire playing Warwickshire.Hampshire, one of the counties backing the plans, said: “The intelligent and well-considered proposal for such a new Twenty20 competition has been prepared in response to ECB’s recent invitation for submissions. The proposal demonstrates significant benefits for all stakeholders in English cricket, with minimal disruption to the traditional domestic structure. Hampshire fully supports the proposal.”Hampshire understands that the proposal has been correctly submitted to the ECB board by two directors of that board, and cannot perceive of any reason why this should not be seriously considered along with any other validated submissions.”Clarke told Test Match Special he wasn’t involved with the proposal but suggested it could be discussed at the board meeting. “There has been a lot of debate and discussion over what is the most optimal format for the summer – what will generate the most money, what spectators want to watch, how it will help the England cricket team,” he said. Clarke, though, wasn’t in favour of a change from the present domestic structure. “I’m firmly in favour of 18 counties playing at their county grounds. I’m not remotely interested in the reduction of counties.”This is the latest speculation surrounding English cricket’s response to the IPL. There is talk of a ten-day window next April to allow contracted England stars to take part in the IPL, but the ECB have tried to ward off the threat of lucrative contracts by signing their five-year deal with Allen Stanford. It is widely accepted there will be an English version of the IPL in the near future, probably as soon as the new round of television contracts come into effect from 2010.

Celtic sweating on Edouard fitness

Celtic’s options from an offensive point of view at the beginning of the season are healthy.

Kyogo Furuhashi has signed and hit the ground running in red-hot fashion, scoring four times in his opening three matches.

Liel Abada and Ryan Christie are also on the right track with eight goal involvements between the pair of them.

However, one player who has endured a topsy-turvy start to the new campaign is Odsonne Edouard.

So often Celtic’s go-to man in a crisis, he only has one goal to his name this term which happens to be a penalty against Dundee last weekend.

The Frenchman has been named among the substitutes in successive games but in a match where he may start, the striker is now a doubt.

The Hoops face Jablonec in the second leg of their third-round Europa League qualifying tie on Thursday but they now may well be without his services.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun who claims Edouard picked up an injury after Dundee last weekend.

Those named on the bench and not in the matchday squad played a 5-a-side game together post-match but he limped away with an ankle problem.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-transfer-news-larsson-lovric-thomas-henry-diego-costa-postecoglou” title=”Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

With Furuhashi in such good form, this is not the biggest of blows. After all, if this eventuality had occurred in 2020/21, Celtic would have been in huge bother.

It’s still a concern for Postecoglou, though, who may have turned to him so he could rest the club’s new Japanese star ahead of their League Cup clash against Hearts this weekend.

Edouard is still one of the club’s leading lights, having found the net on 22 occasions over the last 12 months so to not have him in the squad will be a frustrating occurrence.

Celtic have a 4-2 lead heading into tonight’s clash so rest and rotation could be the order of the day. However, with Edouard potentially having to sit on the sidelines, Furuhashi will probably start upfront.

It’s unlikely Postecoglou would trust Albian Ajeti in a European clash after he scored just six times in all competitions last term.

AND in other news, Celtic open talks to sign 6ft1 gem who’s “one of the very best”, he could be Kyogo 2.0…
