Manicaland Cricket Report

Mutare Sports Club are national league champions for the first time after winning their final game of the season

Nigel Fleming15-Feb-2002Mutare Sports Club are national league champions for the first time after winning their final game of the season. Tied first with Old Georgians and Universals going into the last game, they finished on equal points with OGs (after both sides had won) – but went through on a higher run rate.Travelling to Old Hararians in Harare to meet Bulawayo Sports Club last weekend, they prevailed by nine wickets with time to spare. Managing only a disappointing 77 in 39 overs after winning the toss, BSC succumbed to disciplined Manica bowling with Sims collecting two for 10, Burmester two for 19 and Iain Coulson mopping the tail with three for 2.Neil Ferreira (40 not out) and Andy Flower (29 not out) knocked off the runs after the early loss of Tafadzwa Madondo – playing his last game for Manicaland prior to departure to New Zealand to start a professional rugby career. It’s not clear exactly how he is going to break in, but he is initially heading to Auckland to stay with family. He has been made to understand his prospects are good. He certainly won’t miss the black cricketers from Takashinga club. Batting against them a fortnight ago, they taunted with him unfavourable comparisons to his deceased Test-playing brother Trevor and his willingness to play for the enemy (Manicaland).Flower batted slowly, trying to get maximum time in the middle prior to his departure to India with the Zimbabwe team later this week. Alistair Campbell was missing from the Manicaland team having bruised a thumb, courtesy of a Henry Olonga lifter during a mid-week net practice. He too will be joining Flower in India, having finally finished a period of extended punishment for talking to the English media. He appears to have learnt his lesson. All friendly approaches by this journo last week attracted glacial reserve from this normally outgoing man.Takashinga return to Mutare Sports Club next Sunday to play Manicaland in an end-of-season knockout competition for the top four sides of the national league. Expect more sparks to fly. And this time Manicaland will be without their top guns – Flower and Campbell in India, Whittall and Sims in South Africa with Zimbabwe A. The other two teams in the competition are Old Georgians and Universals.Watching the antics of Takashinga two weeks ago was former Manicaland Secretary Graham Skidmore. Out from Taunton for a short holiday to visit his daughters, he remains an active umpire in the UK and spent much time pressing umpire test-questionnaires into the hands of bemused local umpires. He also gave news of Jeremy Barnes, former Mutare Boys High teacher of the late 70’s and Manicaland cricketer. After a long spell teaching in Johannesburg he is now a professor – married to an American GP – and raises corn and chickens in Texas. This Friday sees the start of Manicaland’s first class program with a four-day game against the CFX Academy at Mutare Sports Club. Making their first-class debuts will be Naeem Sheth and schoolboy’s Tino Mawoyo (16) and Adiel Kugotsi (17).

Saints fans react to Armstrong link

Southampton fans have been reacting to the news that the club want to sign Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers this summer.

This transfer window promises to be a busy one for the Saints as they aim to prepare for the next season. The previous term was a mixed one, as they reached an F.A Cup semi-final but also fell to a 15th place finish in the Premier League, and if they want to move up the table they will need to make some clever purchases.

Now, according to Football Insider, the Saints are leading the race for Armstrong along with newly-promoted side Norwich City. The Championship side are said to be looking for £15m for the 24-year-old, who scored 29 goals in 43 matches in all competitions last term (Transfermarkt).

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the Southampton fans had to say about the Armstrong news below

Roshane Thomas provides Yarmolenko latest

Andriy Yarmolenko ‘wants to reassess’ his future at West Ham United this summer, according to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas.

The lowdown

West Ham signed the Ukrainian from Borussia Dortmund in 2018 for a fee of £17.5m and he has gone on to make just 54 appearances in an injury-disrupted spell at the club, scoring 10 goals.

Yarmolenko only made one Premier League start in 2020/21, notching a further 14 substitute appearances, but he has shone for Ukraine at Euro 2020 so far, scoring a sublime goal in a 3-2 defeat to the Netherlands before finding the net again in the subsequent win over North Macedonia.

Yarmolenko is valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt and has one year remaining on his contract.

The latest

Thomas reported for The Athletic that Yarmolenko is considering his options after a season of limited involvement at the London Stadium. West Ham could look to offload the 31-year-old, who has been earning more than £100,000 per week, as a means of raising funds.

Thomas added that Ukraine manager Andriy Shevchenko told Yarmolenko prior to the tournament: ‘You need to remind everyone how good you are for the national team’.

The verdict

If West Ham are keen to sell Yarmolenko, they’ll be licking their lips after his exploits at the Euros. He might well have doubled his value by reminding the footballing world of his quality.

He could be a decent option next season if the Hammers are looking to rotate during the Europa League group stage, while Irons team-mate Declan Rice has raved about the 31-year-old’s ‘special’ technique and his ‘beautiful’ left foot.

If he does move on, however, West Ham fans may be tempted to ponder what might have been. Yarmolenko has shown devastating ability in flashes, but injury has consistently stalled his West Ham career. Having finished sixth last season with him playing only a peripheral role, he would not seem a major loss if he were to depart.

In other news, a La Liga expert has issued his verdict on this West Ham target.

Gilchrist downplays record after remarkable double century

Adam Gilchrist isn’t sure he belongs among the top tier of Australian Test batsmen despite joining elite company with his remarkable double century against South Africa at the Wanderers.

Michael Crutcher24-Feb-2002Adam Gilchrist isn’t sure he belongs among the top tier of Australian Test batsmen despite joining elite company with his remarkable double century against South Africa at the Wanderers.Gilchrist was today still absorbing his unbeaten 204, which again propelled him past names like Greg Chappell, Neil Harvey, Allan Border and Steve Waugh onAustralia’s list of Test batting averages.Of the batsmen to play more than 10 Tests, Gilchrist’s average of 57.30 is behind only Don Bradman (99.94) and Sid Barnes (63.06), and just 0.05 ahead ofDamien Martyn, his demolition partner yesterday. That Martyn’s excellent 133, in a record-breaking stand of 317 for the sixth wicket, was almost lost beneath Gilchrist’s onslaught on the second day said plenty about one of the most ruthless innings ever seen in Test matches. At 212 balls, it was the fastest double century recorded in Tests, eight balls quicker than Ian Botham’s knock against India at The Oval in 1982.His eight sixes, including two out of the Wanderers grounds, were the most by an Australian in one innings and his stand with Martyn was only the secondsixth-wicket partnership to surpass 300 runs. And all this from a wicketkeeper who didn’t play his first Test until nine days before his 28th birthday. But the humble Gilchrist typically wanted to play down his Test record even though just nine batsmen from all countries have averaged better than him at the same stage of their careers.”I don’t think you can focus too much on it,” Gilchrist said.”I have been up this high before in the averages and seen 10 runs get wiped off in one series. Averages are things you look at when you are finished but it is hard to gauge at the moment.”I think we are the beneficiaries of some great work by the top order which gives us the chance to play our natural games.”Gilchrist’s friends wouldn’t expect him to say anything different but it was hard even for him to downplay the nature of his fifth Test century. The left-hander was cautious after coming in against the second new ball, taking 89 balls to reach his half-century, but he wiped the next 50 off in just 32 deliveries as South Africa’s thin layer of confidence was shattered.Gilchrist, batting at No.7, doesn’t often face a new ball or the responsibility of performing each time he bats, but the more recognised batsmen don’t have the burden of wicketkeeping.Moments after Gilchrist reached his double century, captain Steve Waugh declared his first innings closed at 7-652 and South Africa was paddling at 4-111 in reply when the long second day ended under lights.”I haven’t had a lot of time to sit back and reflect but obviously it is a fantastic personal milestone,” Gilchrist said.”It was an amazing day and something that will always be memorable. We will have to wait and see when I finish my career where it rates.”It was an emotional innings for Gilchrist, who raised both arms to his teammates and then crouched to the ground after reaching his century. The 30-year-old has endured a testing summer, pulling out of a one-day international last month to be with wife Mel and baby son Harrison, who wasn’t well in his first weeks.Harrison has since recovered but Gilchrist admitted it was tough to be away from his family.”We are all under pressure and miss our family and partners. It has been a full-on summer in that regard with Harrison being born,” he said.”Everyone knows I missed a game to be with Mel and Harrison during a tough period.”You are a long time on the road and miss friends and family. It is nice to know you have the support of your team-mates who are a fantastic bunch of guys.”

Jayawardene shines but Colts dominate first day of PTT final

Mahela Jaywardene played a lone hand for the Sinhalese Sports Club, scoring his third successive century, but couldn’t prevent Colts Cricket Club from dominating the first day of the Premier League final

CricInfo29-Mar-2002Mahela Jaywardene played a lone hand for the Sinhalese Sports Club, scoring his third successive century, but couldn’t prevent Colts Cricket Club from dominating the first day of the Premier League final.Colts’ fast bowlers, especially Chaminda Vaas who finished with four wickets, exploited some early morning moisture in the SSC pitch to bowl out SSC for just 216 in their first innings.Their batsmen then responded positively, with Chaminda Mendis (52) and Sajith Fernando (73) laying the foundations, before Romesh Kaluwithrana (50*) skipped towards a run-a-ball half century to leave Colts on 183 for three at the close.SSC, who had the advantage of home conditions, had a full strength side packed with international experience but only skipper Jayawardene played with authority. The right-hander raced to his fifty from just 48 balls, including 10 boundaries, before playing more sedately in the second part of his innings. He was eventually last man out for 137 from 176 balls when he was stumped off the bowling of Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, who also picked up four wickets. It was his third successive century, following scores of 150 and 274 in the previous two matches, the later beginning the highest ever score in Sri Lankan domestic cricket.Jaywardene saved SSC after they had slumped to 67 for five with Avishka Gunawardene, Marvan Atapattu and Thilan Samaraweera scoring just nine runs between them.He was well supported by Hemantha Wickramratne, the former SSC captain, who scored 37 in an 86 run partnership for the sixth wicket.

E tomou pancada do Thiago Mendes no joelho.

Roberts backs Rangers veteran for manager role - exclusive

Graham Roberts insists that Jermain Defoe can become a manager after signing a new contract at Rangers.

The striker has penned a new one-year deal at Ibrox, giving him the chance to move into a player and coach role with the Scottish champions.

Defoe has been with the club since 2019, having initially moved to the club on loan from AFC Bournemouth.

That deal was made permanent in 2020 and he has made a total of 72 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals and laying on 10 assists.

He will now take his first steps into coaching as a member of Steven Gerrard’s backroom team, while also hoping to score goals on the pitch.

And Roberts, who played for both Rangers and Defoe’s former club Tottenham Hotspur, responded when asked if he could go on to see the striker become a full-time manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I suppose you can, I think everybody goes in with a chance of being a manager.

“He’d have to get a good backroom staff in with him, it’s not about mates, it’s about people that know their job, so he has to get rid of those mates that think he’s going to look after them and get people you can trust in there.”

Defoe made 362 appearances for Spurs, scoring 143 goals and laying on 31 assists.
