Man City dealt Robin Gosens blow

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens this summer have taken a blow after Barcelona joined the race to sign the German defender.

Man City have regularly been linked with the 26-year-old ahead of the upcoming transfer window and the latest report from Spanish news outlet Sport claims that he has now attracted the interest of La Liga giants Barcelona.

Ronald Koeman’s side look set to sell back-up left-back Junior Firpo this summer and need a suitable long-term replacement for Jordi Alba, who has maintained a starting spot at the Nou Camp this season but will turn 33 next year.

Gosens could be the ideal fit with the Catalan side, considering he is very much an attacking left-back, who can also feature in midfield, which would suit Barcelona’s long-standing style of attacking full-backs in the mould of Alba and Dani Alves.

However, his performances this season have been sensational at times and he could also prove to be an excellent addition to Pep Guardiola’s side, especially as left-back is one area in which the Citizens could definitely add some more depth.

Whilst Oleksandr Zinchenko has performed extremely well in recent weeks, and Joao Cancelo has performed well as an inverted wing-back at times this season, they both feel like short-term solutions in that position.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

The Atalanta star could be the man to replace Benjamin Mendy in this City side, with his various injury problems meaning he is no longer the player he once was, which has left the Citizens missing a marauding natural left-back such as Gosens.

The most recent season in Serie A saw the former Heracles Almelo man contribute a superb 11 goals and six assists in 32 appearances, averaging an excellent 7.19 rating from WhoScored.

He was similarly impressive last season, scoring nine and assisting eight in 34 appearances in Italy’s top-flight, so it was perhaps no surprise when former Lazio defender Roberto Cravero suggested that he had a “better” season than Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite the Englishman being pivotal to the Merseyside outfit’s first Premier League title.

If the German could match the Liverpool man’s form in the Premier League with City, then he would surely prove to be an excellent addition to Guardiola’s side this summer, so it is unfortunate, therefore, that Barcelona have now entered the race to sign the £31.5m-rated defender, as it may prove to be a major blow to City’s chances of bringing him to the Etihad.

And, in other news… Man City massively missed out on £36m-rated PL beast, Pep dubbed him “one of the best”

O Corinthians discute agora as condições financeiras do negócio.

How Spurs can build Poch his dream squad

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans will probably want two things to happen this summer.

Firstly, many seem desperate to see Mauricio Pochettino back in the dugout amid reports linking the 49-year-old with a sensational return to the club, whilst chairman Daniel Levy could spark a response by splashing out in the transfer market.

The north Londoners have faltered during the past two seasons, losing out on Champions League qualification as they will have to settle for a place in the newly-formed Conference League, as well as squandering another final after losing to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

According to The Athletic and football.london, Pochettino is open to returning to his former club more than 18 months after being sacked by Levy.

A lot of the talk over the coming months will likely be about the future of Harry Kane, who Sky Sports have claimed has expressed his desire to leave the club, although it’s hard to envisage the Argentine coming home without his star striker.

If the 49-year-old does return, he will need backing in the window. Otherwise, the Lilywhites risk falling further behind their rivals, especially as the rest of the big six will undoubtedly look to splash the cash themselves.

Here’s where Spurs could look to strengthen in what could be a dream rebuild involving Pochettino. We’ve taken a look at the squad we think the Argentine could potentially put together if he is re-hired by Spurs this summer.

Goalkeepers

Hugo Lloris is entering the final year of his current contract but, according to Football Insider, the French veteran is in talks to remain at the club for a tenth year and possibly longer. He’s still the club captain and was often trusted by the 49-year-old throughout his reign.

Whilst Joe Hart is the current back-up, the pair could face competition from West Brom shot-stopper Sam Johnstone, who has been mooted with a move to north London. He’s expected to cost around £20m and could finally provide the World Cup winner with a genuine test for that number one spot.

Defence

It could be all change in defence, where individual mistakes and a lack of cohesion have been a defining theme in Spurs’ troubled season.

According to football.london, the Lilywhites want to bring in two new centre-back options but, in order to do so, some of the current squad will have to depart. Juan Foyth’s loan move to Villarreal should become permanent, whilst interest in Davinson Sanchez from former club Ajax should be enough to tempt Levy into a sale. Serge Aurier is expected to rejoin Paris Saint-Germain, too.

Having the likes of Sergio Reguilon and Ben Davies is enough for that left-back spot, with Ryan Sessegnon likely to go back out on loan, whilst Eric Dier – another favourite of Pochettino’s and Toby Alderweireld remain, as do Matt Doherty and academy gem Japhet Tanganga.

They could be joined by Lyon centre-back Joachim Andersen, who has impressed during a loan spell at relegated Fulham and he is one player thought to be high on their list of priorities following the appointment of the next manager. He’s expected to cost in the region of £25m, as per The Telegraph.

Spurs could also reignite their interest in Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar, especially with the Serie A champions likely to cut their wage bill substantially. He’s likely to cost the bulk of the budget in the region of £60m.

One final addition could see long-term right-back target Max Aarons swap promoted Norwich City for north London. It is thought that the England under-21 international is available for around £30m this summer.

Midfield

If there is one position where Spurs are well-stocked, it is central midfield, so you’d imagine there are a few culling candidates here. Selling Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks could free up some budget and wage bill, whilst Oliver Skipp is in line for a shot in the first team.

He could feature alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli, with the Danish powerhouse the only addition since Pochettino’s departure.

Spurs are thought to still hold interest in RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer despite Jose Mourinho’s exit, so he could be the one new addition here. Sport Bild believe he’ll be available for around £35m this summer.

Attack

There isn’t likely to be any additions up front, although Erik Lamela could leave the club amid speculation over his future.

In terms of wide options, Pochettino could benefit from Gareth Bale staying another year alongside Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son, whilst Dane Scarlett could be promoted into the senior fold full-time.

The big question mark is over Harry Kane, who Sky Sports claim has expressed his desire to leave this summer. However, given his likely price tag of £150m and Levy’s stubborn nature, it may be hard to envisage him departing just yet – no matter how desperate he is for silverware.

Pochettino’s potential dream 25-man Spurs squad for the 2021/22 campaign after bringing in £170m worth of new players:

Lloris, Johnstone, Hart;

Reguilon, Davies, Rodon, Andersen, Skriniar, Dier, Alderweireld, Doherty, Tanganga, Aarons;

Hojbjerg, Skipp, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Sabitzer, Alli;

Kane, Son, Bergwijn, Bale, Moura, Scarlett.

AND in other news, Levy could revive Spurs by hiring “priceless” 54 y/o gem who destroyed Poch this year…

Northerns end Natal's winning streak

Doug Watson’s highest limited overs score proved in vain as Northerns beat Natal by four wickets with 10 balls to spare

MWP05-Jan-2001Doug Watson’s highest limited overs score proved in vain as Northerns beat Natal by four wickets with 10 balls to spare.Natal totalled 230 for six, to which Northerns replied with 231 for six in 43.2 overs to end the home side’s winning streak at four matches.Man-of-the-match Watson scored 116 off 144 balls with eight fours and a six, surpassing the 102 not out he made against Free State in Bloemfontein in 1998-99.He was given a life in the 20th over when, on 46 with the total 82 for one, Gerald Dros at extra cover somehow managed to drop the gentlest of catches off the bowling of Pierre Joubert. However, that was the only charity Watson showed the visitors and the rest of his 116-ball innings was without blemish. It wasn’t strewn with big hits but at no stage was Watson bogged down – he always seemed to know where his next run was coming from.Would that some of his partners showed similar composure. Instead, Natal spiralled from 151 for two to 170 for five in the space of three overs to snuff out a genuine chance of posting a total in the region of 250. That undid the good work of the Natal top order, the best of which was a second-wicket stand of 64 between Watson and Wade Wingfield. The home side recovered somewehat by way of a sixth-wicket effort of 55 shared by Watson and Errol Stewart, whose industrious unbeaten 31 came off 23 balls. The partnership was ended with the first ball of the 45th over, when Watson was spectacularly caught by a diving Dros at extra cover. However, Natal promptly relinquished their recovered ground when Gary Gilder and Kent sent down opening spells of nought for 33 off five overs and nought for 35 off seven respectively.Jon Bastow and Eldine Baptiste kept it admirably tight at the other end, but every other over there was no pressure on Northerns’ top order and they were able to score freely as one short and wide delivery – interspersed with the odd friendly full toss or leg-side four-ball – followed another. The pattern was repeated throughout the innings, with Bastow bowling a ragged second spell of four overs in which he took one for 29, as Natal found out the hard way that teams do not win when they bowl muck.Johan Myburgh and Jacques Rudolph got Northerns off to a fine start with an opening stand that grew to 71 before Rudolph slapped his favourite cut shot straight at Jonty Rhodes at backward point in the 14th over.Myburgh and Martin van Jaarsveld then took Northerns 52 runs closer to their target with enterprising batting. But Natal struck back by snapping up five wickets for 69 runs in 12 overs, several of them with considerable help from the batsmen.Wingfield caused much excitement by bowling Van Jaarsveld off the bottom edge with his first ball of the match, and then dismissing Van Wyk and Allahudein Paleker with consecutive deliveries. However, with Dirkie de Vos cool, calm and completely collected at number four for his unbeaten 36 – and Steve Elworthy bashing 27 not out off 15 balls – Northerns were not about to let this one go.

Everton manager update on Ranieri

Some Everton fans have been fuming after an update emerged on Claudio Ranieri.

As per a report from earlier this week from Calciomercato, which has since been shared on Twitter by The Toffee Blues, the Merseyside club are looking at the possibility of bringing the former Leicester and Chelsea boss to Goodison Park.

Ranieri will forever be remembered for being the coach who brought the Premier League title to the Foxes back in the 2015/16 season, a remarkable achievement.

However, his record in terms of league placings has not been great since then with various clubs, as Leicester were 17th the following season when he was sacked, Fulham two places lower when they dismissed him in 2018/19 and current employers Sampdoria finishing 15th the following year when he was in charge for the majority of the campaign (Transfermarkt).

At 69 years of age, too, a lot of Toffees supporters seem to want their club to bring in a much younger manager with fresh ideas.
