Southampton might regret not signing Rob Dickie

It was reported earlier in the year that Southampton were keen on signing Rob Dickie from Oxford United and after his impressive start to the 2020/21 campaign, it could be argued that they may regret not acting on that reported interest.

The centre-back eventually ended up joining Championship side QPR, where he has enjoyed an excellent start to life with the Hoops, having averaged a very solid 6.96 rating across his 10 appearances in the second division thus far (per WhoScored).

Mark Warburton’s side were able to sign the 24-year-old for just £2.43 million, suggesting that it could have been a bargain deal for the Saints if they had managed to bring him to the South Coast.

During his time with Oxford United, Dickie was heavily praised by manager Karl Robinson, who said:

“I know he’s quick, I know he’s talented, I know he’s great in the air, but I need to see what he’s like when he’s on the floor and see how he stands up. In the second half, I thought Rob Dickie was magnificent.” (per Oxford Mail)

Whilst the centre-backs at Southampton have impressed this season, with Jan Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard two of the club’s best-performers in the Premier League so far this season, Dickie could have been an excellent back-up option in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

At just 24-years-old, you would imagine that he still has a lot of room for improvement in his game, so he could have been one for the future at the Saints.

WhoScored describes the defender’s strengths as passing, ball interception and blocking the ball, suggesting that he could have done a job as a ball-playing centre-back at the South Coast club.

The deal to sign him for so cheap could be compared to the Saints’ signing of Jose Fonte back in 2010, with the Portuguese centre-back joining from Crystal Palace for just £1.26 million, before going on to make 286 appearances for the Saints in a seven-year spell at the club.

It can be certainly argued that after an impressive start to life at QPR, the Saints may regret not taking a chance on Dickie, especially when he was available for less than £3 million.

Leeds: Radrizzani must accept it’s time to sell Adam Forshaw

Leeds United have been in a troublesome situation with senior midfielder Adam Forshaw for some time now. The 29-year-old hasn’t played a game in a white jersey for more than a year, as he is currently recovering from a hip injury which he picked up last September.

Forshaw contributed just one assist in his seven Championship appearances to Leeds’ promotion-winning season. The Whites were successful in his absence and are making strides in their Premier League returning campaign without him too.

Andrea Radrizzani simply cannot justify keeping the Merseyside-born midfield man on his books for much longer. Forshaw has been earning his £60,000 per week contract despite being a stranger to the team for well over 12 months. The forgotten Englishman is earning more than the likes of Patrick Bamford and Mateusz Klich, who have played integral roles in the club’s last two seasons (via sportekz.com).

As it stands, Forshaw’s current deal is set to expire in 2022 but if Leeds wait much longer, they risk getting barely anything through a transfer. Transfermarkt currently values the playmaker at £2.8million, which will see Radrizzani take a loss if he is to be sold for that amount.

Leeds initially signed Forshaw in 2018 for a fee of £4.5million. In his 52 appearances for the Whites before his injury, he managed to contribute just two assists, which is far from enough of an argument to justify keeping him for much longer.

The club must make a cut-throat decision and look to offload Forshaw once he is back to full fitness or risk seeing their money pot rinsed even further.

Leeds: Bielsa risks losing Luke Ayling unless club form improves

Leeds United have somewhat stagnated in their returning Premier League season after winning just one of their last five matches. Whilst they currently sit in a respectable 14th place in the table, things could rapidly turn bad for the Whites unless they start getting some more points on the board.

If they continue to struggle, they run a very high risk of losing some of their key players.

The likes of Luke Ayling has seriously impressed so far this term, performing well not only in his usual position at right-back, but adapting to a more central role in Marcelo Bielsa’s hour of need.

His versatility and strength are key components that other clubs will be looking for in a defender.

Once the January transfer window opens up, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if a few offers are made for the Englishman.

Leeds could lose Luke Ayling

Ayling has been one of Leeds’ key players throughout the last two seasons, shining during their Championship-winning campaign and indeed impressing this term as well.

The 29-year-old has attracted a lot of praise, with Alex McLeish recently paying him a huge compliment by stating he is “an example to youngsters everywhere”. He also lauded Ayling as an “impeccable” player who has adapted well to England’s top-flight, via Football Insider.

As he nears his 30th birthday, Ayling will be sizing up just how high his career can go. If a top club shows interest in his services and Leeds struggle to re-establish themselves in the Premier League, he could be tempted to take a move and try for more silverware.

The defender’s £45,000 per week contract runs until 2023 but if a Premier League club comes knocking, Leeds could squeeze a pretty penny out of them for the sale of Ayling. But they cannot afford to let him want a move away or they will lose an extremely valuable member of the club.

However, unless Bielsa changes up his tactics from his usual lineups and repetitive 4-1-4-1 formation, the Whites will be easily found out and losses will become more and more of a regular occurrence.

Indeed, this could spell a potential exit for Leeds’ star defender should he become indemand.

Celtic’s loss of James Forrest is ‘massive blow’ – %%sitename%%

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish believes that losing James Forrest is a “massive” blow for Celtic and manager Neil Lennon.

Forrest out

The 29-year-old is unlikely to return to first-team duties until February, with the Irish tactician confirming that he has undergone surgery on his ankle injury at the start of last month (cited by Glasgow Times).

During the 2020/21 campaign, Forrest has scored twice and provided one assist from five starts and two outings from the bench, averaging a match rating of 7.14, having 2.4 shots per game and accumulating a pass success rate of 89.3% (Whoscored). Lennon is a huge fan of Forrest and described him as “priceless” last season (cited by The Times).

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish compared Celtic’s pain of losing Forrest to Tottenham’s anguish with their star man Gareth Bale.

“Massive loss, a massive loss,” he said.

“We’ve said before about Gareth Bale leaving Tottenham and Tottenham are like: ‘We’ve got £80million to spend, we’ll splurge on six, seven players,’ and you think six or seven can outdo what one player does and that didn’t happen with Spurs.

“It took a long time for a lot of those players to develop and some of them never worked. That’s kind of an example of what I’m saying about special players and, you know, James Forrest has been a special player for Celtic and, not only that, he was a special player for me and for Scotland.

“To lose a key player in your team can cause a disruption to the whole team. I’m not saying that’s the reason for Celtic’s difficult start but Forrest is a player who makes that team tick, even if he’s not in form, it’s just that he puts the fear of death into a defender.

“Even if he’s not at his best and a defender maybe marks him out the game, other players flourish and that’s the things that you don’t really see when you’re involved in the professional side of the game.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

While it could have played a role in Celtic’s demise in the league this season, there are bigger issues in the squad rather than just one player’s absence, most notably in defence.

That being said, Forrest’s statistics alone show that his attacking prowess has been greatly missed.

Time will tell whether Lennon plans to bring in any backup players once the transfer window opens. But whatever happens, the boss will need to bridge the gap to ease the pressure on his shoulders.
