As a player, Xavi Hernandez was one of the best midfielders to grace the game.

Across his career, the 39-year-old made over 800 appearances for Barcelona and Al Sadd and won a whole host of trophies, including the Champions League on four separate occasions.

For Spain, it could be argued his record was even more impressive. He earned 133 caps for La Roja and won the World Cup once, as well as the European Championships twice.

He retired earlier this year and made his first foray into management with Al Sadd. It seems that he would be open to managing Arsenal in the future, though.

He told Sky Sports in an interview on Monday: “Obviously if I had to choose, I would choose a big team, [Manchester] City or United, Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham. Also, [Jurgen] Klopp and [Mauricio] Pochettino and Unai Emery, many people who have gone there are doing an extraordinary job.”

It would certainly be interesting to see the former conductor of the Barcelona midfield step into the dugout at the Emirates Stadium.

Everton fans have taken to Twitter to express their faith in the director of football Marcel Brands after the club dropped into the relegation zone over the weekend.

The club are currently in the same league position that they found themselves in when they sacked Ronald Koeman two seasons ago. In his first full season, the former Barcelona man spent £77.3m and then splashed an incredible £182.88m the following campaign – the season where he would eventually lose his job on Merseyside.

Despite the positives from 2016-17, where Koeman finished eight points shy of Manchester United, the Dutchman failed miserably in getting to the Champions League, which was the main reason Farhad Moshiri let him spend so much money.

On the other hand, since the time Brands moved into the role where he oversees the transfers, Everton have spent £197.73m and yet still themselves closer to a relegation scrap than a fight for Europe.

Brands has been relatively successful during his time as a director of football in Europe, winning three Eredivisie titles and one KNVB Cup during eight years at PSV Eindhoven, whilst helping win AZ Alkmaar’s second-ever league title in 2008 alongside Louis van Gaal.

However, despite his proven success in his homeland, it has been close to a nightmare on Merseyside thus far. In terms of recruitment, the Dutchman has spent well so far with the likes of Richarlison scoring 13 league goals last season and Lucas Digne winning the Player of the Year last campaign.

Despite making just three appearances this campaign in Turin, the former Anfield ace was picked to start for Germany against Estonia on Sunday, but was sent off after just 14 minutes.

His side recovered impressively and won 3-0 courtesy of a brace from Ilkay Gundogan and strike from Timo Werner, but that isn’t stopping Reds fans discussing their former charge, who left on a free transfer in 2018.

One member of the Anfield faithful admitted they feel for Can after his latest setback, but several others didn’t share that sentiment.

Raheem Sterling was included in Garth Crooks’ Team of the Week after his display against Crystal Palace and the BBC Sport pundit praised the Englishman for one particularly outstanding defensive moment.

What did he say?

Sterling had a helping hand in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over the Eagles, providing a sumptuous assist for David Silva’s killer second goal, but it wasn’t only his creative ingenuity that caught Crooks’ eye.

The former Liverpool man has bagged 41 Premier League goals for City over the past two years, which includes the six in eight games he has this campaign.

However, Crooks took the time out to praise Sterling for his defensive abilities: “I can’t remember a game where Raheem Sterling made such an impression without scoring. If ever anyone needed reminding just how much Sterling’s game has progressed under the watchful eye on Pep Guardiola then this was it.

“The way he chased back 40 yards and dispossessed Wilfried Zaha with the most exquisite slide tackle prior to setting up City’s next attack was sensational. Sterling is creeping ever closer to taking Cristiano Ronaldo’s mantle.

“A special performance in a Champions League win might do it.”

Guardiola’s complete package

Few players in world football have seen such an astonishing improvement over the last few seasons than Sterling has under Guardiola. The Spaniard has helped turn the forward into the complete player, scoring a multitude of high quality goals and blossoming into one of City and England’s most integral players.

And as was evident in the Palace game, he is proving to be a defensive asset as well.

Having scored 78 times now for City, Sterling has certainly established himself as one of the world’s best and proven to be one of the club’s main players in their record-breaking era.

Defensively, the 24-year-old made two tackles and completed two interceptions at Selhurst Park, which included that magnificent dart back to stop Zaha. In the same game, he also made three key passes and hit the woodwork once, proving to be a handful both in defence and attack.

If Sterling continues in this manner with goals and defensive work, his name could be thrown into the Ballon d’Or mix as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo edge into the twilight of their respective careers.

The City superstar was included in the 55-man shortlist for the FIFPro World XI, but did not make the cut in the end. However, if these incredible performances continue, he may rocket to the top of the awards sooner rather than later.

The striker has scored 18 times in just 11 games across all competitions this season, with arguably his biggest career highlight coming against KRC Genk in the opening match of the Champions League when he scored a hat-trick.

Now, The Sun claim City have joined the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona in wanting the Norway international – a move to the Etihad would see Haaland follow in his father’s footsteps of playing for the Citizens.

There is a considerable level of hype surrounding Haaland at the moment, and it is easy to see why. He truly burst onto centre-stage with his hat-trick in the Champions League, with Salzburg teammate Maximilian Wober labelling him as “phenomenal”.

Norwegian football journalist Lars Sivertsen further painted a picture of just how dominant and physically intimidating the 6 foot 3 centre-forward can be.

“He gets about the pitch, he’s quite fluid in his movement. He’s decent with the ball and he’s a decent finisher. He’s got a lot of good ingredients for an absolutely terrifying striker. Players who have size and are still quick on the ground, it’s one of those things you can’t teach.”

A swoop for Haaland would represent a significant change from Guardiola’s perceived favoured approach. After all, the Spaniard seemed to ostracise Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his time at Barcelona. But City simply cannot turn their back on a prospect who is threatening to turn into one of the world’s elite strikers. The system and plan may just be better off being thrown out of the window if it means the Etihad side pull of a major coup in landing the Norwegian.

It really would be a major statement of intent if City can fend off strong competition from European rivals for Haaland’s signature.
