What’s the story?

Last week it was reported that Pontus Jansson would be sold by the Whites due to his disruptive presence in the dressing room.

After signing for Brentford, the Swede contradicted these reports and stated that he was sold due to the Yorkshire club’s need to balance their books for FFP purposes.

Speaking to Aftonbladet, Jansson said: “Leeds needed to sell to get a better balance in the economy because of the Financial Fair Play rules, and then they saw that they could make money from me.â€

The Sun journalist Tom Barclay stated that Kemar Roofe could be sold for the same reasons.

The striker has been linked with a £5m move to Rangers this week, and it looks like Leeds could be forced to sell him.

Won’t be reinvested

Despite reports earlier in the summer stating that the Whites could be working on a sell before they buy policy, it’s hard to see these fees being reinvested if the Yorkshire outfit are cutting it fine with FFP.

We’ve known that Andrea Radrizzani has been operating at a loss as the club lost £4.3m during his first year in charge despite selling Chris Wood for £15m.

It seems that the sale of Wood kept the Whites safe from FFP sanctions. Championship clubs are allowed to lose £39m over a three-year period. Without player sales, they had been operating at a loss of around £20m for 2017/18.

This means that if the Yorkshire outfit continue to lose money at the same rate, they would need to sell at least £7m worth of players each year in order to avoid sanctions.

Last season we saw Ronaldo Vieira sold for £7.7m, and this term we have seen Jack Clarke and Pontus Jansson depart for combined initial fees of £14.5m, but Kemar Roofe may still follow as Leeds have been spending big over the past couple of years.

They’re committed to spending £15m on Helder Costa next summer, and they signed Patrick Bamford in a deal worth up to £10m.

This type of spending may have to stop though, as it seems the Whites are on the brink of being handed an FFP sanction.

A stunning start to the 2018/19 campaign saw Joe Gomez emerge as a standout player for Liverpool and England.

The former Charlton man was starting week in, week out alongside Virgil van Dijk and had iconic centre-backs such as Rio Ferdinand championing him to become one of England’s best.

Ferdinand said: “This kid for me, he’s on the march to be the best defender we’ve got in England. I rate him so highly. He’s calm, he’s cool and you need that when you’re under pressure.”

Sadly for the 22-year-old however, he suffered a lower leg fracture in a 3-1 away win against Burnley before the turn of the year and only managed to make three more appearances for the rest of the season – those showings amounted to just 12 minutes of action.

Gomez lost his place to Joel Matip, who in fairness didn’t put a foot wrong after he came in – the Liverpool supporters loved his display in the Champions League final.

However, two key moments from the 6 foot 2 defender in pre-season so far have shown that he is desperate to impress Jurgen Klopp and get back in the team alongside van Dijk.

The Charlton academy graduate was allowed to have an extended holiday after appearing in the UEFA Nations League with England, and was due to be back at Melwood later this month.

Gomez instead made an early return on Saturday, and went one better by wowing his teammates and the staff by running James Milner all the way in the annual lactate test – a running drill designed to assess the player’s fitness levels after their time off.

“Everyone knows how fit Millie is, he’s a machine, but I tried to do as much as I could in the off-season to come back as fit as possible. It’s nice to be up there competing with him, to get to that stage, but Millie speaks for himself,” said Gomez, and it’s clear to see that he has been working hard on his fitness in the off-season.

Reporting back early for pre-season training, and then running the fittest player at the club all the way in the endurance test shows that Gomez is serious about preparing for the 2019/20 campaign properly.

He certainly looks determined to get his place back from Matip and impress Klopp.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp has hailed new signing Sepp van den Berg as an “outstanding talent” and suggested he could be ready to play sooner rather than later.

What’s the word?

The 17-year-old became the Reds’ first signing of the summer transfer window, as Klopp’s side beat off competition from a host of European football’s top clubs for the centre-back’s signature.

Having seen the Dutchman in training, Klopp delivered an exciting assessment of the teenager, but cautioned that Liverpool’s strength in numbers in central defence could see his playing time limited for now.

The German said: “He’s a wonderful boy and he decided to join us, which is good. It’s a not a long-term project where the boy has to think he has to wait five years to play for us, but it’s not for this moment.

“We don’t struggle in the centre-back position, we have a lot of options. Last year, there was a time when we had just one left plus Fabinho, that should not happen again. If we does, we find the solutions.

“With Sepp, he’s just an outstanding talent. He has to adjust to a proper physical pre-season, which is hard for him so we help him and do the right things for his development.”

A diamond in the making

When you have to fend off competition from the likes of Bayern Munich and Ajax for someone’s signature, then you know the player must be at least half decent. As Dutch centre-backs seem to dominate the headlines in recent weeks and months – namely Liverpool’s own Virgil van Dijk and now Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt – the world will be watching van den Berg’s progress with a keen eye.

As Klopp mentioned, the Reds are well stocked in the defensive department and boast the likes of van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren in that centre-back position.

Liverpool’s desire to retain their Champions League crown and finally end their wait for a Premier League title will only add to the lack of playing time van den Berg will receive next season, but Klopp’s assessment of the player certainly bodes well for the Merseyside club’s long-term future.

يدخل ريال مدريد المباراة وفي رصيده 43 نقطة في المركز الثالث، بفارق الأهداف عن برشلونة صاحب المركز الثاني.

Earlier this month West Ham confirmed the club-record signing of Sebastien Haller, a striker whose stellar form in 2018/19 clearly caught the eye of Manuel Pellegrini and co.

The Hammers paid £45m for the Frenchman’s services, having sold star frontman Mark Arnautovic to Shanghai SIPG for £22.4m.

The 25-year-old chalked up an astonishing 20 goals – equal to the league tallies of Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez and Lucas Perez combined – and 12 assists in 41 appearances across all competitions in the last campaign.

At the same time, he established a lethal partnership up front with Real Madrid new boy, Luka Jovic, who scored 17 league goals himself.

With the departures of Andy Carroll and Perez preceding Arnautovic’s bitter exit, the Hammers were in desperate need of reinforcements up front, but there is little doubt that Haller can be more than just a replacement for the aforementioned names; the former FC Utrecht man can be an upgrade.

Having failed in their attempts to bring Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette to the club back in 2016, the Hammers may finally be getting the big-name striker they’ve been looking for.

But what can Haller bring to the London Stadium besides goals?

Aerial duels

Having finally lost their patience with the former Newcastle striker, West Ham might have rid themselves of a sick-note striker by releasing 30-year-old Carroll this summer.

However, the towering hitman at least had his uses when the Hammers were forced to find ugly ways to score.

The big number 9 won 3.8 aerial duels per game last term – the most of any West Ham player – and this dominance needed to be replaced.

Fortunately, Haller has strength and power in abundance, as proven by his incredible 6.8 aerial duels won per game in 2018/19, putting Carroll’s output to shame.

Unlike Carroll, the former France youth international isn’t just a bully, though – his 1 dribble per game shows that he has the technical ability to beat a man, while Carroll’s sole glimpse of ingenuity in a West Ham shirt was that overhead kick he executed against Crystal Palace.

Key passes

Arnautovic’s 6 foot 4 frame enables him to bounce through challenges before using a potent blend of strength and vision to create opportunities for both himself and his teammates, as evidenced by his 1.3 key passes per game last term.

Despite being a goalscorer first and foremost the Austrian also provided four assists, proving crucial in both the creation and execution of chances.

Haller’s influence in the final third was similar. He completed 1.3 key passes per game, a return bettered by only Hoffenheim’s Joelinton and Werder Bremen’s Max Kruse in 2018/19 when ranking forwards who made more than 15 appearances.

The behemoth hitman’s ability to pick out a pass for a teammate will surely see Felipe Anderson match or surpass his ten strikes last term, while he is bound to pick up a few assists throughout the season.

Tackles

Premier League strikers such as Danny Ings and Roberto Firmino, who play in high-pressing systems and are known for their ability to close down and dispossess defenders, are a huge asset to their sides.

And Haller could bring a similar intensity to those sorts of names at the London Stadium.

The Ris-Orangis-born star completed 0.8 tackles per game last term – the fourth-highest of Bundesliga forwards who made more than 15 appearances – while also making 1.4 fouls.

In comparison, Arnautovic, who is renowned for his bullish approach to centre-forward play, made 0.3 tackles and 1.1 fouls.

It would seem that the Hammers are getting a player who offers their former number 7’s physical and creative abilities and some.

Even better, he arrives without the baggage.

Rangers fans loved the display of Ryan Jack as Steven Gerrard’s men beat Kilmarnock in dramatic fashion on Sunday.

A last-minute Connor Goldson header gave the Gers all three points in their opening game of the Premiership season.

Goldson’s last-gasp goal came after Stephen O’Donnell’s strike had cancelled out Scott Arfield’s opener at Rugby Park, meaning the Gers triumphed 2-1.

The supporters will have gone home happy after such a dramatic win, and it seems the performance of Jack was another reason for them to leave the game ecstatic.

The former Aberdeen captain caught the eye as part of a midfield three alongside new arrivals Joe Aribo and Steve Davis.

The Light Blues faithful noted how dominant he was at a ground his side struggled at last season, particularly in the Premiership as Gerrard’s men failed to beat Killie in the league in the previous campaign.

Steve Bruce has confirmed that he wants to keep striker Dwight Gayle at Newcastle United this summer, per Chronicle Live.

What’s he said?

The Daily Star had claimed that Leeds United were eyeing a loan move for the striker as they look to strengthen their squad for another promotion push in 2019/20.

But Bruce, who has been active in the transfer market since his appointment as manager, with the signings of Joelinton, Allen Saint-Maximin and Jetro Willems all confirmed under his tenure, says he would like Gayle to stay at the club.

He said: “As I keep saying, you’re only as good as your strikers.

“In that area, we need a threat and Gayle has always been part of my plans. We hoped he’d be ready after China but he’s gone backwards.

“It’s a disappointment because I like him.

“I’ve tried to buy him before but not been able to afford him!”

Second chance

Gayle has been on the books at Newcastle since 2016 but his time at the club has been rather stop-start.

Signed after the club slipped into the Championship, he scored 23 goals in 32 Championship outings in his debut season but struggled in 2017/18, scoring just six times in the Premier League and completing the 90 minutes on a mere eight occasions.

A loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last season saw him net 24 goals in the second-tier but now it appears he is set to get another chance under Bruce’s management.

Clearly a talented striker, there is a suspicion that perhaps he is too good for the Championship but not quite good enough for the top-flight.

That theory will certainly be tested this season but it seems that, at last, he is set to get a second chance at the Magpies.
