It was a sorry night for Arsenal, who suffered back-to-back defeats after two impressive away wins at Watford and Napoli. Just when you thought the Gunners had turned a corner, they came crashing down again.

The 3-1 defeat was testament to Wolves’ character, who continue to churn out impressive results against the ‘Big Six’ despite their season looking comfortably over, and with little left to play for.

After Arsenal’s defeat to Crystal Palace on Easter Sunday, Unai Emery went with a more recognised starting XI, but the players failed to restore order in the Gunners camp and find themselves sitting in 5th, a point behind Chelsea in 4th.

Despite a late consolation goal by Sokratis, there was one youngster who came off the bench to put a smile on the fans’ faces: 19-year old Eddie Nketiah.

The youngster is remembered by most fans for his heroics in the Carabao Cup last season when he came off the bench to score two goals and overturn a 1-0 losing position for the Gunners against Norwich in 2017.

Many fans took to Twitter to praise another impressive cameo by the young forward…

Perhaps that was the performance that will earn himself more game time under Emery.

Whilst the Hammers have struggled with inconsistency all season, getting one over their London rivals Tottenham puts all their problems to one side. How nice is it to be the first ever team to win at their overrated new home? Wonderful, wonderful stuff. 

Still, it hasn’t been the greatest season for Manuel Pellegrini and his players but it is one that has shown real glimpses of potential. Indeed, despite the huge spending over the summer, West Ham will be hoping to make a number of changes this window too, in a bid to get themselves where they want to be.

The need for changes is a great one, with the right additions sure to hoist the Hammers further up the Premier League and improving their chances of reaching a seventh place in the future. Who knows? Maybe they could go higher.

One player they have been linked with is AC Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu (via Fanatik late last month) and he is certainly the calibre of player that would allow West Ham to get far better as a team. Calhanoglu, (who is valued at £19.8 million on Transfermarkt) would undoubtedly be a huge lure for West Ham and one who would add significant quality to their midfield.

The 25-year-old has been strutting his stuff for the Italian side, being their reliable, creative source from the heart of midfield. Perhaps he could be everything Jack Wilshere was supposed to be.

With a stunning 13 assists across the season, Calhanoglu is understandably a player West Ham would be keen to acquire, given his natural talent on the pitch. His reputation, especially from dead-ball situations, is second-to-none and the Hammers haven’t had a capable player from those chances since Dimitri Payet left in 2017.

With Hakan Calhanoglu able to play both central-midfield and on the wing, West Ham may finally have their missing link and the player to help assist their growth to the next level.

وبشأن الذهاب إلى يوفنتوس، بعد رحيله مجانًا عن البارسا، أوضح ألفيس: “ذهبت إلى هناك لأظهر لبرشلونة أن لدي المستوى الكافي للعودة، كامب نو هو منزلي وأردت العودة وعرضت عليهم ذلك وكانوا بحاجة لي هذا ما قلته له، لم يكن لديهم الجرأة للاعتراف بأنهم كانوا على خطأ”.

Aston Villa are in the market for James Tavernier according to Football Insider, who understand the Rangers man is subject of interest from the Midlands club.

The right-back has been in exceptional form for Steven Gerrard’s side this season and despite playing in defence has incredible numbers for goals and assists, hitting double figures for both in 2018/19.

With the likes of Alan Hutton and Ahmed Elmohamady both in their 30s then, it is thought Dean Smith is looking for a younger player in that position.

Villa’s summer plans could hinge on whether they get promoted but it’s likely the club are to do plenty of business given the number of loan deals ending at the end of the season.

Tavernier is currently captain at Rangers and has been a key man under Steven Gerrard. However, it now looks as though he could be on his way back to England.

With a possible move on the cards, Football FanCast writers have given their verdicts on whether the 27-year-old is the type of player the Villans should be looking at if they get promoted. Here’s what they said:

Luke Glanville:

“For me, James Tavernier is most definitely not the type of player Aston Villa need to be targeting if they manage to secure a return to the Premier League. Especially in defence, Dean Smith’s men will require players with plenty of experience in the English top flight. And the right-back Tavernier has a little, but not nearly enough. Plus, the Rangers man has been playing in the far inferior Scottish leagues for the last four years and would undoubtedly hugely struggle with the step back up to the Premier League. There’s a reason why Newcastle United let him go in the first place.”

Billy Meyers:

“Aston Villa should definitely take a look at signing James Tavernier if they go up. We’ve seen that Ahmed Elmohamady is a prolific relegation specialist in the past, and at 31 years of age, the Villans should definitely be searching for his replacement. As a result, what better man to target than the technically brilliant Tavernier, who has an astonishing number of goals and assists to his name across all competitions. Plenty of gems, such as Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk, have come out of the Scottish top-flight, and Villa could get their hands on another star in Tavernier.”

James Beavis:

“Most definitely. The club often got their recruitment all wrong in their final few years in the Premier League, but signing Tavernier would prove Villa have learnt their lesson. The 27-year-old is a decent enough defender and especially effective in the final third, and Kodjia or a new striker would be in dreamland with the service the former Wigan man is capable of providing. This move makes all the sense in the world, and now Dean Smith just has to ensure they make it to the Premier League.”

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with Barcelona’s on-loan midfielder Andre Gomes.

Sport claimed earlier this week that personal terms between Spurs and Gomes had been agreed and that the Catalan giants are set to receive a bid in the region of €30million (£26m) for the 25-year-old.

And yet, something feels off.

The star has spent the season in the Premier League with Everton and he has hardly set the world alight. He has scored once and laid on one assist in the top-flight across 27 games. Those are hardly the statistics of a £26m player.

Now, Spurs do need a midfielder. They lost Mousa Dembele in January and he has not been adequately replaced but there is one man in the squad who appears to have been forgotten about: Harry Winks.

Winks is a more defensive-minded midfielder than Dembele and, while he has struggled with a groin problem this season, it is remarkable to think that Gomes could waltz in and instantly take his spot in the team.

After all, the Barca man is hardly going to replace creative fulcrum Christian Eriksen further up the pitch and nor is he going to dislodge Moussa Sissoko, the club’s best midfielder and engine room powerhouse. Similar in style, Gomes’ position in Tottenham’s strongest XI is surely the one Winks occupies when fit.

Winks has played fewer games than Gomes in the Premier League this season but still, the statistics bear out that it should be the Englishman starting next season at the base of Spurs’ midfield.

In the defensive phase, per WhoScored, Winks makes an average of 1.8 tackles per game to Gomes’ 1.4, concedes just 0.4 fouls per 90 minutes to his counterpart’s 1.8 and makes marginally more interceptions (0.8 to 0.7). He is also dribbled past, on average, 0.3 times per game. Gomes’ number is 1.7.

Perhaps, though, it is offensively where the current Toffee thrives? Nope. While Gomes has more shots (0.8 to 0.3) on average, he has scored the same amount of goals as Winks and also loses the ball far more. Per 90, he loses the ball 1.9 times per game. Winks gives possession away 0.9 times.

This is not to mention Winks’ control of the ball; he is able to command a midfield and has a pass completion rate of 91.8%. Gomes’ is 84.8% and that is from nine fewer passes per game.

Now, Pochettino has worked miracles before. One need only look at the renaissance of Sissoko for evidence of that, but this pursuit of the Portugal international makes precious little sense.

Yes, Spurs need depth in midfield, but spending £26m on a player of similar style who is clearly worse than Winks, a player who need only return to fitness to get back into the team, is negligence in the extreme. Money down the train.

Jackie McNamara believes Rangers can steal a march on signing Joe Aribo due to the stability in place at Ibrox, as reported by website Football Insider.

What’s he said?

The Guardian reported last week that both Glasgow sides were interested in making a move for Aribo, who has impressed for English League One side Charlton this season.

With the player’s contract up this summer he looks set to try and make his name at a higher level and big clubs like Rangers or Celtic would surely be tempting destinations for the 22-year-old.

McNamara, who earned 33 Scotland caps in his playing days, reckons the Gers are better placed to land the player than their rivals, due the fact Celtic still do not know who their manager will be heading into the summer.

As quoted by Football Insider, the former Scotland international said:

I saw him the other night in the match (League One play-off semi), he looks strong and quick and looks a good prospect. The big thing for Rangers is they can do certain things while Celtic need to wait till after next week.

It depends on what the lad’s promised. Just now, if he’s getting offered a contract at Rangers it’s different because the manager’s in place.

If Neil’s the manager at Celtic it’ll be him speaking to him, trying to get him, or a new manager comes in, so it depends on how quickly everything gets done but again, I think this time next week – I’m not saying everything will be done and dusted in terms of having a manager in place – but we’ll certainly be a lot closer to doing it.

What else can Rangers offer?

The path to first-team action is also a bit clearer for Aribo if he decided to make a switch to Ibrox. That’s not to say Rangers don’t have talented midfielders, but players like Callum McGregor and Scott Brown are part of the furniture at Celtic Park and are often undroppable.

Aribo would have the chance to arrive at Ibrox and get more first-team action, potentially providing the link between midfield and attack that Steven Gerrard has been crying out for all season.

Right now the ceiling is higher at Celtic due to their UEFA Champions League participation, but the Gers probably offer the best opportunity to make a name for himself north of the border.
