Spurs fans rave over Giovani Lo Celso after tweet

Tottenham Hotspur have entered a rut following three successive defeats, and arguably their chances of silverware this season will hinge on Wednesday’s FA Cup tie.

Jose Mourinho’s side are now five points from breaking into the top four in the Premier League and face a mountain to climb in the Champions League after handing RB Leipzig a valuable away goal.

Norwich City awaits tomorrow evening.

Ahead of the fixture, attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso tweeted out some words of encouragement, which has sparked a mass reaction from sections of the Spurs faithful.

Fans were claiming he was their Player of the Season whilst others believe he’s the only one in the squad who isn’t giving up.

Here’s what has been said…

The Argentina playmaker was labelled a “prince” as well as a “king” while one supporter praised his “brilliant commitment” in tracking back to win the ball and hoped that it would rub off on his other teammates.

Another fan believes Lo Celso will become a star at Spurs. He was even described as “one of few shining lights” in the current squad.

It has led to some lauding the 23-year-old as their Player of the Year – so far.

This sort of attitude has sparked question marks over those around him – one suggested that he tell Tanguy Ndombele to get his act together as he was a “disgrace” on Sunday against Wolves.

Another stated that Lo Celso was the only player giving his all for the team and that he needed to tell the defence to not give up.

There was even a lofty comparison made to Lionel Messi, suggesting that the Spurs superstar was a better player than the five-time Balon d’Or winner.

While another fan claimed that Lo Celso and Steven Bergwijn were the “only ballers” in the squad at the minute.

What could’ve been… Can you name the clubs these football legends almost joined?

Celtic: Fans gush over ex-player Stephen Crainey after post

Celtic fans were gushing over former ace Stephen Crainey after the retired player took to Twitter to tweet on the anniversary of his debut for the Hoops.

In a message on the social media site, Crainey claimed that making his debut for the Celtic Park outfit was a ‘dream come true’ and that it was ‘one of the best days’ of his life. The ex-defender made 58 appearances for the Glasgow outfit, scoring just a single goal (via The Celtic Wiki).

One fan labelled him ‘magic’.

However, despite his limited appearances for the Scottish giants, the 38-year-old’s time with the team proved to be incredibly fruitful as he won five major trophies. He was even a part of the treble-winning side from the 2000/2001 campaign, a season in which he made five appearances.

Supporters were full of complimentary messages for the retired left-back, who came through the academy at Paradise as they took to Twitter to react. Here are a selection of tweets:

talkSPORT writer suggests Liverpool shouldn’t get PL trophy

Liverpool shouldn’t be handed the Premier League trophy if the season cannot be finished, according to talkSPORT Features Editor Anton Stanley.

What did he say?

The current Premier League suspension has led to some discussing what the plan should be once this has all finished and play can resume.

There will be those who feel the season should be finished whenever is possible, while some may think that the current campaign should be written off.

With the second of those options, the big issue is whether or not teams are given league titles, or whether clubs should be promoted and relegated.

Stanley has given his view on what should happen to Liverpool’s league title: “Void the season but have play-offs for European places. Right now, the only sensible option seems to be voiding the season across the English leagues.

“Yes, it’s tough on Liverpool. Well, tough doesn’t cover it. But given their recent form and the beauty of football, anything could have happened.

“Their recent run of two wins in six in all competitions is the proof it can’t just be handed to them on the assumption they would get the results they needed.”

Bold claim

This is a pretty bold claim from the talkSPORT employee, regardless of Liverpool’s current form, due to the gap between them and the rest of the Premier League.

They are currently 25 points above Manchester City, who have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp’s side. This means that even if Pep Guardiola’s men won every single one of their games in the rest of this season, Liverpool would require just six points from nine games to win the league without goal difference being a factor.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

Liverpool may have not been at their best in recent weeks, but to steal the title from them in these circumstances would be incredibly cruel, especially when they still have the likes of Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion left to play.

Considering how dominant they have been for the majority of this campaign, the Reds deserve the title.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have been hit with a major blow behind the scenes.

Crystal Palace predicted XI for 2020/21

Crystal Palace have excelled during the 2019/20 campaign so far, as they currently sit just six points behind fifth-placed Manchester United in the Premier League table.

However, when the summer transfer window comes around, Roy Hodgson will be keen to ensure that the Eagles don’t rest on their laurels when it comes to the 2020/21 season.

Therefore, they will be aiming to bring in some new faces, as well as keeping the big-hitters that are already at the club.

With this in mind, FFC has predicted the starting XI that Hodgson may use next season in order to get the best of of the campaign.

There are only five teams who have conceded fewer Premier League goals than Palace this season, so there is no need for the spine of their defence to change. Considering this, Vicente Guaita, Gary Cahill and Scott Dann take up their place in the side.

However, there is a need for the squad’s average age of 29.2 to be reduced, and that can be helped in the transfer window, especially with signings in the full-back areas.

Calling all Eagles fans: Can you get 90% on this quickfire Palace quiz?

It was reported by The Athletic that Palace are looking to revisit their January move for West Bromwich Albion’s Nathan Ferguson, who can play on either side of the defence.

He features on the left in this lineup, as the Eagles have also been linked with River Plate’s 23-year-old right-back Gonzalo Montiel, by Ole.

The midfield goes unchanged, with Luka Milivojevic, Cheikhou Kouyate and James McArthur all keeping their place.

One person Palace will likely be desperate to keep is their talismanic winger Wilfried Zaha. There is a chance he could stay at Selhurst Park, with The Times for example reporting that it is unlikely Everton will reignite their 2019 summer interest in the Ivory Coast international.

Jordan Ayew features on the right flank, having recorded eight goals and an assist in the Premier League so far this term.

Palace’s third signing included in this lineup is CSKA Moscow striker Fedor Chalov, who is a target according to The Daily Star. FFC writers aren’t entirely sure about whether this would be a smart move, but the 21-year-old Russia international could be signed after recording six goals and six assists in all competitions.

Meanwhile, a key figure at Palace has proven journalists wrong.

Flashback: Nicolas Pepe has justified Arsenal’s £72m purchase

According to notable transfer expert Duncan Castles, this summer’s transfer window is likely to be a ‘depressed’ one compared to previous years amid the current suspension to football, largely around the world. With that in mind and the fact there’s nothing to give us a footballing fix, the Transfer Tavern are doing their best to remind their readers how some of their club’s fans reacted to the biggest signings of this season in order to focus on what’s been before us, rather than the uncertainty ahead.

Back in August of 2019, Arsenal splashed out £72m on winger Nicolas Pepe. It proved to be a surprise even for supporters of the north London club as Champions League winners Liverpool had been linked with him. One fan thanked Raul Sanllehi.

While outlets such as the Sun suggested he was a ‘flop’, his actual numbers hint at an important role in the side. In just 32 games across all competitions, the Ivory Coast international has scored six goals and assisted a further eight (via Transfermarkt). Considering the Gunners are sat in ninth place in the Premier League and were knocked out of the Europa League by Olympiacos, these are brilliant stats for someone who is playing in a squad with ‘uncoachable’ players, according to Sky Sports’ Gary Neville (via football.london).

As well as his contributions in the final-third, Pepe seems to be a man who strikes fear in opposition defenders, averaging 2.7 dribbles per league game, as per WhoScored. His quality has been highlighted by Sky Sports’ Graeme Souness, who claimed the winger can emulate club legend, Thierry Henry, surely the highest praise any Gunners player can receive.

Whatever happens, when the top-flight season resumes, Pepe has shown his quality and that he can make an impact on this side. With that in mind, the money invested in him is slowly starting to look worth it.

Spurs can start revolution with Nick Pope addition

Tottenham Hotspur’s season is effectively over, even when it returns to action – whenever that may be.

The north London outfit are out of all cup competitions and have sunk to seven-points adrift of the top four in the Premier League with only nine games remaining.

Jose Mourinho, who was only appointed in November, inherited the majority of this current squad – pretty much every player barring January additions Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn.

And with a few players seemingly headed for the exit door at Tottenham Way, this summer could spell the real start of the Jose Mourinho era’ at Spurs.

The Portuguese chief would be wise to begin with a defensive overhaul, and where better to start than the marshal of the backline – the goalkeeper.

Hugo Lloris has been a frequent presence between the sticks for Spurs since joining eight years ago, he’s gone on to notch 316 appearances, but the long-serving stopper has been rather error-prone this campaign, and with him not getting any younger at 33, his replacement must be found soon.

According to Football.London, Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope could be an option for Mourinho – a player that was once targeted by former boss Mauricio Pochettino, as per the Mirror.

The England international could be the perfect figure to spearhead a new-look defence next season as no other glovesman has kept more clean sheets in the Premier League than Pope (11).

Spurs have the worst defensive record of any side in the top ten with the north Londoners only managing four shutouts themselves between the Frenchman and his backup Paulo Gazzaniga.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche has described the 27-year-old as a “big monster” whose best asset is claiming crosses – something that Lloris has struggled with as seen at Villa Park when he spilt the ball for Mbwana Samatta to score back in February.

Premier League experts will get full marks: The ultimate quiz on top-flight transfer flops…

“A goalkeeper can bring a calmness to a team,” Dyche added, which is something Spurs have lacked in the Frenchman’s presence, and therefore, it makes Pope an ideal candidate to come in and take the reins.

Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker-Peters could all be on their way out, but to lessen the void, Mourinho must bring in a shot-stopper of Pope’s quality.

Newcastle fans react to report on Amanda Staveley’s takeover plans

Loads of Newcastle fans have been reacting to a report from The Chronicle, via @NUFC360, which claims that Amanda Staveley has already begun sounding out potential candidates for roles within the club.

According to the report, Staveley, who is believed to be fronting the attempt to buy the club, is already plotting a new regime at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies are currently relying on the extremely unpopular Lee Charnley to head their transfer business, but this report claims the new set-up will include a more formal board and new executives on the football side of things, something plenty of fans were excited to hear as they lambasted Charnley on Twitter.

This comes after The Telegraph claimed earlier this week that paperwork had been filed to the Premier League over a potential £340m deal involving the Saudi Public Investment Fund, though no formal bid has been made yet.

Since then, various different reports have emerged, with Mark Douglas delivering some exciting news on Thursday while Craig Hope believes Mike Ashley is wiling to sell the club.

Newcastle fans go berserk over Mauricio Pochettino news

Newcastle United could be getting themselves a new manager alongside their change in ownership ahead of next season, and the reported number one candidate has sent the Magpies faithful into a frenzy.

According to Sky Sports, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is the front runner to succeed Steve Bruce under the Saudi-backed consortium and they are prepared to pay him £19m per year to take the helm at St James’ Park.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

The Argentine was surprisingly axed by Daniel Levy in November, less than six months after guiding the north Londoners to the Champions League final, and he has been out of work ever since.

If that deal fails to come to fruition, there could be a return for Rafa Benitez, who left Tyneside for Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Yifang in the summer.

There’s no doubt that many Newcastle fans would absolutely love to see Pochettino take charge at the club, but for the time being, it remains to be seen whether this report is indeed accurate and if he would even be open to the job.

It also suggests that Bruce is running out of time at the Magpies and that the new owners aren’t likely to give him a fair shot at continuing his job past the current campaign.

Spurs fans react over reported Morgan Sanson interest

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be in the market for a new middle man this summer after Sky Sports claimed Jose Mourinho is after what he calls a “positional” midfielder following an enquiry over Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

However, it’s a Ligue 1 star that has been linked to the north London outfit this week.

According to L’Equipe, super-agent Pini Zahavi has offered the Portuguese boss Marseille’s Morgan Sanson and it’s subsequently caused the Spurs faithful to debate the potential switch on Twitter.

The Frenchman has played 30 times this season, providing five goals and five assists in all competitions via Transfermarkt and the 25-year-old has recorded some decent numbers statistically too.

He’s averaged 2.2 tackles, 1.5 dribbles, 1.4 shots and 1.1 key passes per game, which hints towards him being a box-to-box type rather than the “positional” man Mourinho is desperately craving.

Sanson has been managed by former Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas at OM and is valued at £20.25m, but the report claims he could cost between €35m (£31.4m) and €40m (£35.9m).

Gaston Pereiro would be an excellent addition for Arsenal in the summer

Unai Emery is reportedly (via the Daily Mail) set to be handed limited funds to strengthen his squad during the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard was forced to settle for loan signings in January, landing Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez on a temporary deal. There is plenty of work to be done if Arsenal are to challenge Manchester City, Liverpool and Spurs at the top of the table next season. Emery may be forced to offload many fringe players in order to boost his finances.

The long-term future of Mesut Ozil remains unclear after the German was left out of the matchday squad yet again against BATE Borisov. After falling out of favour under Arsene Wenger, the ex-Real Madrid man has struggled for form and fitness under the former Sevilla boss.

To replace him, Arsenal should make a move for PSV Eindhoven maestro – Gaston Pereiro. Valued at £12.6m by Transfermarkt, the Uruguay international has been a mainstay in the side since moving from Nacional back in the summer of 2015. Pereiro was crucial to the side that lifted the Eredivisie title last season and has been in fantastic form yet again during the current campaign.

The 23-year-old has been lethal in front of goal, netting ten goals in all competitions. As well as his goalscoring exploits, Pereiro has also been the creative force for his team, registering seven assists for his team-mates. Averaging 1.5 key passes per game in the Eredivisie, his arrival at the Emirates could mean even more goals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the attack (WhoScored).

The playmaker possesses the quality to carve open defences and would be an excellent Ozil replacement if the former Germany international does leave England.
