Man Utd swoop for Kai Havertz could spell bad news for Angel Gomes

When Jesse Lingard continues to start games for Manchester United despite being in a horrific run of form lasting well over a year, you know things are bad.

The England international went from January to November last year without scoring for the club, and this season just has one to his name – and that came against FC Astana in the Europa League.

It’s therefore no surprise that the Red Devils have been linked with a number of attacking midfielders, particularly since the opening of the January transfer window. One man whose name sticks out in particular, is Kai Havertz.

According to The Athletic, the Bayer Leverkusen starlet has been discussed by the United hierarchy this month, but that they would rather wait until the summer due to his sizeable €100m (£85.1m) valuation and dip in form this campaign.

The Germany international has just three goals in 21 games, but has proven his quality in recent seasons for the Bundesliga side. The 20-year-old struck 20 times in 42 matches across all competitions, and also provided a further seven assists too. United making a move for the young talent appears to be a no-brainer, but it would spell very bad news indeed for one of the Red Devils’ own starlets.

Angel Gomes has yet to receive a significant opportunity in the first-team this season, making just five senior appearances. The 19-year-old appears to be highly regarded by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer however, with the Norwegian even claiming back in the summer that he has “high hopes for him”.

If that really is the case, then United need to show their faith in their academy product by avoiding a big-money swoop for another talented youngster.

Quickfire Questions on Man United: How many can you get right in under 3 minutes?

It’s all well and good perhaps going for a more proven entity like Maddison, but Havertz’s age and his lack of experience in English football would make him a bizarre signing when you’ve already got Gomes on your books. The United prodigy has 28 academy goals in 64 total games – a fine record for someone who predominantly operates behind the striker.

Splashing the cash on Havertz would spell incredibly bad news for the long-term future of Gomes, and would make a mockery of what Solskjaer has had to say about the latter.

Meanwhile, Man Utd swooping for this ruthless finisher could provide them with what they are missing.

Marcelo Bielsa’s view on Leeds ‘Ryan Edmondson makes no sense at all

Leeds have been taking a risk in their last few fixtures as they’ve lined up without a recognised striker on the bench.

Of course, this is down to their lack of depth in that role after Eddie Nketiah’s recall, but that doesn’t mean there are no strikers on the books.

In fact, they’ve got an incredibly talented youngster at their disposal, and he goes by the name of Ryan Edmondson.

Edmondson should be a familiar name for many United supporters at this point. He’s been one of the academy’s brightest sparks for quite a while now, netting 20 goals for the U23s last term, but Bielsa seemingly doesn’t rate him.

He’s not appeared on the bench in recent weeks despite now being the logical second-choice striker behind Patrick Bamford, and Phil Hay’s recent comments on him make it seem as though Bielsa doesn’t want to use the teenager.

The journalist said that he’s not convinced that he has a future at Leeds, adding that Bielsa may be the reason behind that.

The Argentine may well be a god-like figure in the eyes of supporters, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t absolved of all criticism.

Ignoring a player who netted 20 goals last year despite playing six years above his age group, playing with the U23s as a 17-year-old, is simply ridiculous.

You could forgive him for not playing him this season as Leeds need proven talents and it’s pretty much promotion or bust, but he should definitely be in his long-term plans.

For so long, conversion rate has been an issue for Leeds, and they have this young talent who certainly knows where the net is but Bielsa wants nothing to do with him.

It makes zero sense, and we can only hope that the Argentine makes a U-turn on this stance in the near future.

In other news, Victor Orta should treat a recent transfer update as a wake-up call.

Arsenal fans swoon over Eddie Nketiah after scoring first goal since Leeds return

If Eddie Nketiah had dreamed of the perfect scenario for his first Arsenal start since returning from Leeds, then Monday night’s clash against Bournemouth saw it come to reality.

The Gunners academy product had spent the first-half of this campaign on loan at the Championship side, but didn’t seem to get much of a look-in under Marcelo Bielsa.

The England U21 international managed just 495 minutes of football in the league, and it was no surprise that Arsenal recalled him earlier this month.

And after being given the chance to start against Bournemouth in the FA Cup fourth round, Nketiah took his opportunity with both hands, scoring a very impressive first-time finish. After seeing his display, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the 20-year-old.

Some Gunners fans insisted that Nketiah is already better than Alexandre Lacazette, with the Frenchman enduring a difficult season at the Emirates with just six goals to his name.

A couple of fans felt Nketiah reminded them of Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

Having struggled to get a genuine first-team opportunity at Leeds, it didn’t take long for Nketiah to show his worth for Arsenal. With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suspended, and his long-term future in question with reports he could leave this summer, the Gunners youngster has the chance to really stamp his mark under Arteta.

And his goal against Bournemouth on Monday night was a supremely well-taken finish. If the game was seen as an audition on whether he could genuinely be an option for Arteta for the rest of this season, then he passed it with flying colours.

Meanwhile, this Arsenal starlet has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of Ronaldo.

Phil Hay reveals that Leeds still want to get rid of one man

Leeds United’s business in terms of incomings is done and dusted.

Indeed, Marcelo Bielsa has said that the club are finished signing players, and Phil Hay has echoed that sentiment.

However,  Hay has now revealed that there is still one man at the club who United want to get off the books.

[ad_pod ]

What’s been said then?

The Athletic’s Leeds United correspondent was contributing to the websites deadline day live blog.

He gave a decisive update on the team, and he stated that there is still a senior-team player they want to see leave.

“All business in and out seems to be done. The club got what they were looking for in this window – a striker, a winger and a goalkeeper. They’ve also moved on virtually every surplus first team player, with the exception of Ouasim Bouy. Ideally they’d like to pay up the remainder of Bouy’s contract (18 months left) but it would cause problems with PnS calculations.”

Who on earth is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure January signings?

Wait until summer

It’s unlikely that any teams will want to take Bouy and his considerable wages on between now and 11pm, and while Leeds want to pay up the remainder of his contract they shouldn’t.

Hay says that PnS will be a bit of an issue, but if United go up this term then paying Bouy off will be just a drop in the ocean after they receive their Premier League windfall.

Unfortunately, he’s going to have to stay at Elland Road for a little while longer, but as long as he’s not a disruptive force within the first-team squad there shouldn’t be too many issues with that, other than the financial drain of his wages.

Arsenal fans laud Matteo Guendouzi after tigerish display against Bournemouth

By the end of the night, Matteo Guendouzi was the one who enjoyed the last laugh. The Frenchman was relentlessly booed by the Bournemouth crowd in Arsenal’s FA Cup fourth round clash, with his apparent theatrics and professional fouls drawing the ire.

His involvement in a touch-line altercation with Dan Gosling further incensed the home supporters, but to his credit, Guendouzi kept his composure, and helped inspire an impressive 2-1 victory for the Gunners.

As per Sofascore, he won a ridiculous 14 total duels, completed all five of his attempted dribbles, and made four tackles too. The former Lorient man also helped dictate the game for the north Londoners, enjoying 88 touches, and accurately delivering seven of his nine attempted long balls.

And after seeing his tigerish performance, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the 20-year-old.

A couple of supporters of the north London side drew comparisons with former Arsenal players, with one fan referencing Patrick Vieira, and another comparing him to Cesc Fabregas.

Some fans discussed Guendouzi’s uncanny knack to find his way into the bad books of opposition supporters, with one supporter in particular claiming that the Frenchman would be more happy getting booed in an away game than scoring a hat-trick.

Whilst his impressive display may have come against a Bournemouth side who are currently languishing in 18th in the Premier League table, Guendouzi certainly showed Mikel Arteta what he is capable of.

Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka have appeared to be Arteta’s preferred choice in the two deep-lying midfield positions, with Guendouzi being an unused substitute on three occasions in the top-flight since the appointment of the new head coach.

Can you name all of these obscure Arsenal signings? Give it a go now!

But his statement-making performance against the Cherries on Monday night has given Arteta something to think about going forward.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans have been left swooning over this attacker’s performance against Bournemouth.

Southampton couldn’t turn down £8m double opportunity with Yoshida and Cedric

On the last two days of the January transfer window, Southampton were ruthless.

Two players in Cedric Soares and Maya Yoshida, both of whom had spent a combined 12 years at St Mary’s having joined in the summers of 2015 and 2012 respectively, departed the club.

In Yoshida’s case, he was somewhat of a cult hero at St Mary’s, getting involved with charity work at the club by donating 1% of his wages to the Saints Foundation on a monthly basis, while always representing himself with class and professionalism since arriving from VVV-Venlo.

Both the 100-cap Japan international and the 33-cap Portugal international were to be out of contract come the summer, leaving Southampton in a tough negotiating position should they have wanted to make any money on the pair.

However, make money is just what the Saints did.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side obtained a £3m loan fee when shipping Yoshida off to Serie A side Sampdoria, where he would see out the rest of the season and the remainder of his Southampton contract with no chance of return – Southampton’s official Twitter account even put together a goodbye montage for the 31-year-old.

With Cedric, the former Sporting Lisbon man ended up joining Arsenal on loan in a package worth £5m to Southampton – the deal also didn’t harm the club personnel-wise, as Kyle Walker-Peters had arrived just a day before on a temporary basis.

While it may have been more romantic to keep the pair and give them a nice send-off at the end of the campaign, Southampton simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to gain a welcome £8m from waving goodbye to the duo – especially seeing as Yoshida had only played five Premier League minutes since that 9-0 defeat, while Cedric had come under fire from Southampton supporters for his display against Norwich and once again before a game against Newcastle.

Who is that?! Nobody has been able to name the teams all of these obscure managers were once in charge of…

It was far from a poetic ending on the south coast for the pair of them, but Southampton simply couldn’t pass up such an opportunity.

In other news, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s update on one Southampton player has come at just the right time…

3 mediocre talents that are incredibly still in the Premier League

On the very periphery of every Premier League squad you will find a figure standing very still. He is still because should he make any sudden movement it might remind one of the coaching staff of his existence. The key is not to stand out. To stay distinctly unremarkable. To continue picking up a Premier League wage and blend right in.

Now let’s be clear about this because it’s an important point. The peripheral player is not taking a leaf out of Winston Bogarde’s play-book here; the Chelsea mercenary who was infamously a-okay with taking his £40k-a-week while never being considered for the first-team.

The peripheral player wants to be picked. He wants to earn his corn. It’s just that he can’t. He is nowhere near good enough. He is at best lower Championship level and should he be selected on any given weekend his limitations would once again be all-too-apparent.

On a personal note I once worked in a factory where my sole job was to collect and dispose of cardboard boxes. It was a duty that took five minutes every hour and for the remaining 55 minutes I would keenly try to look busy; to blend in to the point of invisibility. It was the hardest job I’ve ever had.

These players therefore deserve our respect. They have done magnificently to this point keeping up the pretence. Only now they’ve been found out.

Oumar Niasse (Everton)

The Toffees were attempting in January to offload a striker who has consistently under-performed in a royal blue jersey since signing from Locomotiv Moscow for £13.5m in 2016.

The Senegalese attacker has scored eight times in 35 Premier League appearances during his largely forgettable spell at Goodison and though this is hardly a disastrous return it can subjectively be said those goals have been his only contribution bar some willing running.

Quickly realising that his predecessor Roberto Martinez had signed a dud, Ronald Koeman wasted no time in informing Niasse his days were numbered on Merseyside when he took charge.

“He told me ‘I didn’t want you, you are not good that is all,” the player relayed to a sympathetic fan-base who probably agreed with the sentiment but bridled at claims that Koeman also took away Niasse’s locker and shirt number. He’s an honest tryer is Niasse; just a bit rubbish, and no-one really deserves that treatment.

Just like no-one really deserves a loan stint in Hull but that’s what came next while his next temporary move took him to Cardiff, then in the top flight. In 13 appearances he failed to score.

Since then the 29-year-old has been glimpsed on occasion then instantly forgotten about and now the transfer window is closed, it seems he’ll be seeing out an Everton contract that expires in the summer.

Obscure Footballers – Old School edition: Nobody can score more than 70% on this quiz…

Yoshinori Muto (Newcastle)

When the Magpies signed the Japanese forward in the summer of 2018 many aspects of the transfer made sense. His £9.5m fee was perfectly reasonable for a player who had scored eight times in the Bundesliga the previous year, as he helped keep Mainz up.

Furthermore, he was a seasoned international who would provide decent back-up to Newcastle’s first-choice pairing of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon.

Muto failed in that regard and in fact has failed in every regard since, scoring just once in 24 Premier League appearances. Elsewhere he has been entirely unmemorable and about as impactful as a tissue in a snowstorm.

“I would like to perform well and leave my name in Newcastle’s history,” the flop said on arriving in the north-east. He hasn’t and he won’t.

Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton)

The Saints stopper differs from the other two and that’s not just because he is an imposing 6ft 6 and looks like an extra from Game of Thrones.

Unlike Niasse and Muto, the Danish international has actually seen a lot of game-time on the south coast and for lengthy periods has even been viewed as a first-team starter. Indeed, last August he made the headlines for thumping home an equalizer against Manchester United.

As a defender he’s still outstandingly poor though, and this has pretty much consistently been the case since he arrived for what has proven to be in hindsight a ludicrously extortionate £18m in 2018. So that’s why he is included here – because his future is destined to be what Niasse and Muto’s predicament is now and it has started already.

Revealingly, the dropping of the centre-back, who has the turning circle of an oil tanker and only wins 3.3 aerial duels per game despite towering above pretty much everybody in the Premier League, in November directly correlates with Southampton’s upsurge in form and results of late.

The giant Dane played in his team’s first 12 fixtures of this term. The Saints lost eight of them. Since he has been cast aside however Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have pushed themselves out of relegation bother to sit just six points away from the top six.

Southampton’s win percentage is 13% higher without Vestergaard in the side. This is not a coincidence and the 27-year-old can expect to be well acquainted relative anonymity for some time to come.

Southampton: Callum Slattery scores on De Graafschap home debut

In January, Eerste divisie outfit De Graafschap secured the signing of Callum Slattery from Southampton on a deal until the end of the season.

The Saints academy graduate has only ever made five first-team appearances at St Mary’s, having made 13 outings for the club’s U18 side and 72 for the U23’s.

None of those first-team outings have come in the current campaign, hence Southampton’s decision to ship him out on loan to get some much-needed experience under his belt – in his latest display for the Dutch side, he registered a landmark moment.

In De Graafschap’s league game against Roda, Slattery scored his first goal in senior football with an 85th minute strike to seal all three points, after Mohamed Hamdaoui had opened the scoring just five minutes after replacing Sven Blummel.

The fact that the 21-year-old’s goal was his first in senior football wasn’t the only thing that was significant about it.

In netting against Roda, Slattery also ensured that he had crowned his home debut for the club with a goal, having made his first appearance for De Graafschap in a 3-2 win away to Jong PSV.

One presumes that Slattery – who The Daily Mail’s Secret Scout once described as “captain material” – will remember the moment for a long, long time, and it will surely be even more fondly remembered seeing as it ensured the club grabbed all three points, rather than being a mere consolation strike in a defeat.

De Graafschap’s next outing comes on Friday when they face FC Dordrecht in the Eerste divisie, where Mike Snoei’s side will be looking to secure three more points in a bid to keep the pressure on league leaders SC Cambuur – Slattery’s team are just four points behind the first-placed outfit.

Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

It remains to be seen if the Southampton loanee can help his teammates win the league, although he has certainly made a good first impression in front of the home supporters with a goal on his first outing at De Vijverberg.

Manchester United: Matt Jarvis believes Bruno Fernandes is perfect for United

Matt Jarvis was a guest on the Football Daily Podcast and he discussed Manchester United’s victory over Watford, a game that was marked by Bruno Fernandes’ confident showing.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s troops strolled to an impressive and rather dominant 3-0 display against Watford and have now jumped above Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League standings. Indeed, it was their new signing Fernandes who stole the show and even slotted in the penalty kick to open the scoring at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with the player compared to the likes of Paul Scholes and Juan Sebastian Veron by his boss.

Jarvis believes the Portuguese midfielder is the perfect man for this Man United gig and he’s already showing the fans why. Here’s the verdict he delivered on the 25-year-old for the Football Daily Podcast (23/02/2020): “I think he’s perfect for United. It’s just what everyone, as a fan, has wanted to see from them. They have lacked that creativity and he seems to be the perfect player to go in, full of confidence. He’s full of confidence and he seems to be right at home and it’s going well for him.”

It’s difficult to disagree with Jarvis on this one and Fernandes had been proving himself a quality player even prior to joining the Red Devils. After all, we’re talking about an attacking midfielder that had been scoring goals for fun at Sporting, netting 63 alongside 52 assists across just 137 games for the Portuguese side.

So, given the fact he’s already averaging the most shots out of anyone in the side other than Marcus Rashford (3.3 per game via WhoScored) and the same number of key passes per game as a certain Paul Pogba (2.3), Jarvis looks correct in his assessment of the player thus far.

Man United fans, are you satisfied with Fernandes’ displays so far or are you expecting more from him? Let us know in the comment section below!

Liverpool: John Bradley believes Atletico Madrid will eliminate the Reds

John Bradley talked on the Official UEFA Champions League podcast and gave his prediction for Liverpool’s second leg clash against Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp ran straight into a metaphorical brick wall at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium when he faced Diego Simeone’s resolute troops in Spain as the Rojiblancos secured a 1-0 victory going into the second leg, with the Reds unable to register a shot on target according to WhoScored.

As a result, Bradley believes there is no coming back from this as the Reds aren’t pushed domestically given how far ahead they are in the league and, if there’s one team capable of knocking them out, it’s Atletico Madrid in his eyes.

Here’s what he said for the Official UEFA Champions League Podcast (27/2/2020): “Liverpool have already won the league practically in England. So have they still got the competitive edge? Also, they can’t keep going the way they have been in the two-legged ties and the heroic comebacks. It’s got to come to an end soon. And I don’t think there’s a better side in Europe who will break the game or frustrate them than Atletico. I think Atletico will go through.”

We’ve already seen how frustrating and tough to break down Simeone’s men can be – with Jurgen Klopp himself venting his frustration following the first leg – and it’s fair to assume they’ll adopt a similar approach in the second leg, especially since the clash will take place at Anfield.

It’s interesting that Bradley is so confident, however, and even though Liverpool may be losing that competitive edge, they can still muster comebacks and simply outperform their opposition as they proved against Barcelona last season.

Needless to say, we’re in for quite a hectic return leg but to say the Reds are down and out would be premature.

Liverpool fans, do you agree with Bradley’s harsh verdict or do you still see your team advancing? Let us know in the comments below!
