Marko Arnautovic signs new contract with West Ham to finally end exit talk, fans react

[ad_pod ]

West Ham fans have taken to Twitter to react after news broke that Marko Arnautovic had signed a new contract, just weeks after he supposedly wanted to leave amid interest from the Chinese Super League, as revealed by the club’s official Twitter account.

The 77-cap Austrian international, who was even left out of the Hammers’ squad to face Bournemouth recently (as per the BBC), will now stay at the London Stadium until at least the summer.

29-year-old Arnautovic was seen waving to the fans after being substituted midway through the 1-0 win over Arsenal earlier this month, so his U-turn has shocked many of the east London club’s supporters who feel the forward had already burned his bridges with them.

Who should replace Marko Arnautovic if he leaves West Ham? FFC’s James Jones has the answer! Check out the video below to find out…

The former Stoke striker is the main man under Manuel Pellegrini, and has scored eight goals this season.

Interestingly, the Hammers have already made headway on a potential replacement in Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez, as they are considering meeting the Uruguayan’s release clause (as per the BBC).

Nevertheless, let’s take a look at how West Ham fans reacted to the news…

The Chalkboard: Why do Newcastle persist with Joselu up front on his own?

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United fell to another demoralising defeat on Saturday, as they were beaten 2-0 by Watford in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Magpies are 17th in the Premier League and now have no chance of lifting silverware this season, while they have also yet to invest in the January transfer market.

On the chalkboard

Benitez picked a rotated XI against the Hornets, naming Joselu as his lone striker.

The 28-year-old has scored three goals this season, the last of which came in the FA Cup third round victory over Blackburn Rovers. His other two came in August, in defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Perhaps he was picked on the back of his display against Rovers, but there is little about Joselu that marks him out as a first-choice centre-forward.

Check out the video below for Emma Conybeare’s rundown of which clubs need what in the January transfer window…

Salomon Rondon is first-choice at St James’ Park, and he has netted six times already this season. Indeed, he did not play in the FA Cup and now will not get the chance.

Benitez could well be politicking, choosing to play games as he attempts to convince Mike Ashley, the club’s tight-fisted owner, to finally dip into the transfer market this month.

The Magpies have roundly failed to add to their squad and The Telegraph has reported that the former Liverpool boss will leave if Ashley does not sign two players before the deadline.

Desperate times call for desperate measures

If Benitez really did play politics with the FA Cup, supporters are sure to be furious.

Joselu is not, and has never been, a first-choice striker in English football.

During his spell with Stoke City, he scored just four goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

Never has a stronger message been sent to a boardroom; playing the player so ill-suited to a role that Benitez may well have sent ten men out to face Watford.

And, yet again, Newcastle will not be winning any silverware this season.

It is not Joselu’s fault, of course; he has been told to do a job and continues to try to do his best, but he finds himself at the centre of an apparent power play.

It remains to be seen if that will pay off and whether we will see any new faces arrive at St James’ Park in the next few days.

Chelsea reportedly eyeing Richarlison as potential replacement for Eden Hazard

[ad_pod ]

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Richarlison is one of a handful of names on Chelsea’s radar with Eden Hazard’s future in doubt.

What’s the word?

The report claims that Chelsea are bracing themselves for Hazard, valued at £135 million per Transfermarkt, to leave in the summer and they are beginning to turn their attention to a handful of players, including Everton’s Brazilian boy wonder.

Richarlison has been ‘followed closely’ by Chelsea, who are also considering a move for Lorenzo Insigne.

Chelsea apparently considered buying him before he decided to join Watford in the summer of 2017, and they have continued to monitor his progress throughout his time in English football.

Richarlison departure would be a dagger to Marco Silva’s ambitions

This is exactly the type of story which will fill Everton fans and Silva with dread. Richarlison has been hot and cold at times this season but his star quality is obvious.

At just 21-year-of-age dips in form and erratic moments are par for the course, and the overriding feeling is that Richarlison could blossom into a Goodison Park legend in the years to come.

With Everton already lacking strength in depth in forward positions, it’s incredibly unlikely that Silva and the rest of the club’s hierarchy will be open to the possibility of selling up.

The saving grace is that Silva and Richarlison seem to have established a positive working relationship during their respective spells at both Watford and Everton, and that could ultimately convince him to snub advances from Chelsea if they eventually come calling for his signature.

Missed opportunity: Jadon Sancho could come back to haunt Stan Kroenke and Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

Jadon Sancho landed at Wembley on Wednesday evening and, with the British media watching on with eagle-eyed intrigue, impressed in fleeting moments of devastating dynamism.

Missed opportunity

Naturally, Manchester City fans watching at home will have been looking on pondering what might have been, but Arsene Wenger ensured that feeling would extend to Arsenal supporters.

Indeed, the former Gunners boss appeared as a pundit on BeIN Sports for Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Borussia Dortmund and he revealed that he wanted to sign the 18-year-old during his time as manager in north London, as per Daily Mail.

‘(Sancho’s) is an incredible story because the pressure now on these young boys from an early age is very big.

‘The second thing, is the pressure from all the clubs – I say that freely because I wanted to take him from Manchester City when he was not getting the games.

‘I tried to lure him, because he was from London, I tried to get him to Arsenal.’

The supporters will be looking at Wenger’s claim and thinking ‘here we go again’. The Frenchman has made similar revelations before about a host of top players, but his latest admission is one which will resonate deeply with bitterly disappointed supporters.

Financial implications for Stan Kroenke

Not only will Wenger’s admission represent a huge disappointment from a footballing perspective, but also from a financial one.

After scoring seven goals from 21 Bundesliga appearances this season – averaging at one goal for every 194 minutes of football played – Sancho has seen his value rise at an exponential rate.

On June 5th 2018, Sancho was valued at just £13.5 million by Transfermarkt; now his value stands at an eyewatering £63 million.

His development shows that if you sleep on an opportunity to sign a player of Sancho’s potential, the financial implications can be huge.

In the modern economic climate it doesn’t take long for players with pace, trickery and end product to skyrocket in value, and Arsenal’s failure to translate their interest into a permanent deal will almost certainly force Kroenke to pay a premium price for a similar talent in the future – one which may well be beyond his financial capability.

If Arsenal want to compete on a level playing field with Europe’s most prestigious clubs, they simply cannot afford to let another potential transfer target of Sancho’s quality slip through the net while they remain available at an affordable price.

Spurs tipped to sign Adama Traore from Wolves

Darren Bent has tipped Tottenham Hotspur to sign Adama Traore from Wolves after his impressive showing against the club at the weekend, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

Traore scored a superb goal against Spurs in his side’s 2-1 defeat at Molineux and tormented left-back Jan Vertonghen throughout the 90 minutes.

Per WhoScored, he completed five dribbles and had three shots on goal as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were narrowly beaten.

Football Insider have previously reported that Spurs’ players urged boss Jose Mourinho to sign the winger and Bent believes he would be an excellent acquisition.

He said: “As a squad player, he’d be brilliant, get him in there.

“But for someone like Adama Traore, I think he is good at what he does, he’s unstoppable at times.

“But I think those unstoppable times are too few and far between.

“I can’t remember him having a string of 10-games-in-a-row where he is the best player on the pitch, and that’s the consistency he needs to show.

“Every time he gets on the ball, he has the ability to run past his opponents at will, but he doesn’t seem to do that.

“So for me, I think he could go to Spurs or someone like that, and Mourinho could potentially make him better.”

Bench option

Traore would be a fearsome option off the bench.

If Spurs are struggling to find a way through a team, bringing the ex-Barcelona youngster on for the final 20 minutes of a game would terrify the opposition.

Indeed, Traore has the perfect cocktail of a remarkably muscular physique, genuine pace and an unerring eye for goal, as he showed against Spurs.

Bent is perhaps right that he has struggled to blend it together into a consistent output – he has scored five goals in 62 outings for Wolves – but a move to a club like Spurs could well unlock his potential.

Mourinho, after all, has brought Lucas Moura back into the fold and allowed him to thrive; he loves a tricky, pacy winger, just as Traore is.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have reacted to a link with a Championship ace.

Three games West Ham fans should look out for this weekend

West Ham United are out of action this weekend, with their fixture against Liverpool being postponed due to their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

While Hammers fans may be left missing being able to see their team play, especially after the win against Southampton, there is still plenty of football being played, with some potentially being of interest to the claret and blue army.

This will be a chance for supporters to forget about Manuel Pellegrini and focus on matters elsewhere.

Considering that, we have picked out three matches that Hammers fans should keep an eye on in West Ham’s absence this weekend.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Sheffield United

West Ham have been linked with a move for Brighton centre-back Shane Duffy by ExWHUEmployee, while the possibility of Lewis Dunk was also hinted at by the insider.

Looking at Duffy, he has managed just seven minutes across two substitute appearances in the Seagulls’ last four games, so if this carries on, there could be a higher likelihood that Graham Potter would be willing to let the 27-year-old leave.

Tranmere Rovers vs AFC Wimbledon

David Martin may have solved Manuel Pellegrini’s goalkeeper issue in the short term, keeping two clean sheets in four games, but a potential answer for the future is currently plying his trade in League One.

So far this season, Nathan Trott has played 17 league matches, keeping three clean sheets and saving 4.3 shots per game for an AFC Wimbledon side that are currently sitting 19th in the table.

This will be an important game for the two clubs as they are next to each other in the league, but from a Hammers point of view, it will be interesting to see how the 21-year-old loanee fares in what could be a tense game.

Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

It has been reported by The Northern Echo that West Ham are readying a £5m bid for Newcastle United right-back Javier Manquillo.

In a completely opposite scenario to Duffy, the 25-year-old has risen to prominence in recent weeks, starting each of the Magpies’ last four Premier League games, having not played a minute in the previous seven.

With that considered, it will be interesting to see whether the Spaniard is able to continue in this way, as it may impact whether or not he is seen as disposable by Steve Bruce.

West Brom interested in signing £15m-rated Dwight Gayle from Newcastle

According to The Athletic, West Bromwich Albion are one of half-a-dozen Championship clubs interested in signing Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, and he is exactly what they need.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Athletic report that the Baggies, along with promotion rivals Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, are all keen on the 29-year-old, who would cost in excess of £15m.

West Brom of course had the centre-forward on loan during the 2018/19 campaign, and it was a hugely successful one as he scored 23 goals in 39 league games, before netting another in the play-offs.

The report adds that while the former Crystal Palace man is desperate for first-team football having only got 150 top flight minutes under his belt this term, Newcastle’s lack of potency up top means that Steve Bruce cannot afford to let him go.

The Athletic suggests that mindset could change if a substantial bid for his services arrives next month, however.

Exactly what they need

One of the main reasons that the west Midlands outfit finished fourth last season was because of Gayle’s exploits in front of goal, but it has been a different story this time around for the side under Slaven Bilic.

Despite currently lying in second spot and only being behind Leeds United on goal difference following just their second Championship defeat of the campaign against Middlesbrough on Sunday, they haven’t been able to rely on one of their strikers with goals not exactly free-flowing.

Charlie Austin has seven, Hal Robson-Kanu has six and Kenneth Zohore has two, as per Transfermarkt.

In fact, there has been a real reliance on the attacking midfielders to step up, with Grady Diangana, Matheus Pereira and Matt Phillips scoring 17 between them.

West Brom’s record of 47 goals in their 25 league fixtures is actually the best in the division, but it could be even better if they had someone of Gayle’s calibre up top – he is proven at this level with 59 goals in 100 outings.

A £15m-plus fee for a 29-year-old is a lot, but he is someone who could easily make the difference in their bid to finish in the top two come May.

Liverpool fans react to Simon Johnson’s report on Timo Werner

Timo Werner has been linked with Liverpool for quite a while.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

The first reports emerged back in October, and there have been updates about him ever since. The latest one comes from Simon Johnson of The Athletic.

The journalist has said that the Germany international will not consider a move to Anfield when his €50million (£42.6m) comes into play. This is due to the fact that he believes there is no place for him to feature with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino already the regulars up front.

The club’s supporters have been reacting in their droves to this news, and many have slammed the RB Leipzig striker’s attitude.

In all fairness, you can’t really disagree with that point of view. Mane, Firmino and Salah have already scored 35 goals between them this term, with just under half of the season remaining. Given that the Reds are top of the Premier League by 13 points, it would be a hard side to break into.

Others, though, believe there could be a spot for the former Stuttgart man were he to make the move.

With 23 goals in 25 matches already this season, the German is having a fantastic campaign, and on that kind of form, Klopp would surely be able to make some space for him in the team.

If this news is true, though, we will never know if he would have become a star at Anfield.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are interested in this youngster “worth €300m”.

Crystal Palace fans react as Bayern Munich see loan move for Wilfried Zaha rebuffed

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after The Guardian reported that Bayern Munich have had a loan approach for Wilfried Zaha rejected by the Eagles.

The Bundesliga giants tried to take the Ivory Coast international on a temporary deal until the end of the current campaign with a view to signing him permanently in the summer, although that was thought to have been ‘immediately’ rebuffed by the south Londoners who are insistent on keeping their prize asset unless an offer of £80m arrives at their door.

Zaha’s new agent – Pini Zahavi – is seemingly trying to get his new client a move and has tried persuading Chelsea to make a move for the winger, while also attempting to get Tottenham to resurrect their interest.

The Palace academy graduate – who has scored three goals and grabbed two assists this season – handed in a transfer request back in the summer and was said to have been left ‘devastated’ that an exit from SE25 never materialised.

Let’s see how the Palace fans on Twitter reacted to the German side’s loan offer…

These two Palace fans were not happy with Bayern Munich’s ambitious approach to take Zaha on loan.

One supporter said “what laughable stupidity” after hearing of the offer, while another sarcastically asked if Bayern were going to loan Robert Lewandowski to the south London side in return, before branding the German club as “idiots”.

Elsewhere, this fan named Rob hilariously said that Bayern can have Zaha on loan, if they stump up a loan fee of €90m.

Furthermore, these two fans both questioned the logic behind Bayern’s thinking, asking why the Eagles would send their best player out on loan – one supporter named Chris called them “delusional”.

Lastly, Dan called the reigning Bundesliga champions “time wasters” – it is clear that these Palace fans on Twitter aren’t happy with Bayern Munich’s approach, to say the least.

In other news, these Crystal Palace fans are in favour of Zaha moving to this destination…
