Divock Origi would certainly prove to be a statement of intent for Celtic

The pressure is mounting on Brendan Rodgers after Celtic slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League.

Celtic travelled to Austria in desperate need a positive result to lift spirits after a difficult start to the season. The Hoops got off to the perfect start with Odsonne Eduoard opening the scoring after just two minutes. However, the Austrian champions quickly struck back with three goals and Celtic’s misery was compounded as James Forrest received his marching orders.

The signs are ominous for the Celtic faithful with the club seemingly showing little signs of progress this year. Despite dominating on the domestic stage in recent years, Celtic have again failed on the European stage. Being knocked out of the Champions League was bad enough, now the Hoops face a real fight to progress from their group.

One man who could help end their slump is Liverpool outcast – Divock Origi. Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, the Belgian has slipped down the pecking order and spent last season on loan at Wolfsburg. His performances in the Bundesliga did nothing to convince Jurgen Klopp that he is ready for the first-team at Anfield and offers were accepted for him in the summer.

Origi chose to stay at the club but is yet to feature for the Reds this season. Moving to Celtic Park could be a wise move for his development given it was Rodgers who brought him to Merseyside. The Northern Irishman is a huge fan of the youngster and could look to reunite in the January transfer window.

The former Lille striker will be hungry to succeed – a loan move with an option to buy would be an astute piece of business by the Bhoys.

New England: Gareth Southgate’s exciting youngsters to take centre stage

[ad_pod ]

After a successful World Cup in Russia, England boss Gareth Southgate is now focusing on the future in his quest to lead the Three Lions to glory.

A new four-year contract extension last week was followed up by his squad announcement for the Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain on Friday and Monday respectively.

Following England’s opening round defeat to Spain at Wembley last month, Southgate will be hoping his team can deliver better performances and results this time around and included a few young talents in the squad to bolster their chances.

James Maddison, Jadon Sancho, Mason Mount, Lewis Dunk, Nathaniel Chalobah and Marcus Bettinelli are the six uncapped players in the squad, but it’s the first three who have made the headlines for bursting onto the scene this season.

James Maddison

Maddison made an immediate impact in his debut for Leicester City at Manchester United on the first weekend of the new Premier League season. Despite the Foxes slumping to a 2-1 defeat, Maddison caught the eye with a good midfield performance.

Operating in the number ten position, the 21-year-old has started in every Leicester game so far this season and has especially looked good when dictating play going forwards.

His passing from the centre has been superb and he has been a real threat on free-kicks. Maddison already has three goals to his name, one of which came from a free-kick 20 yards out against Huddersfield Town.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho, 18, is currently the talk of the town at his German club Borussia Dortmund, who he joined in August last year from Manchester City. The winger’s outstanding flair and footwork, combined with his blistering pace, has caused opposition defenders a lot of trouble this season.

Despite being used as a substitute most of the time, Sancho’s impact has been very effective and he seems to be learning and growing immensely in the process. His awareness on the pitch has also been terrific and he has a natural feel to the game that has a few clubs in England monitoring him at the moment.

Mason Mount

The Chelsea loanee, who is currently thriving under the guidance of Frank Lampard at Derby County, has been at the heart of The Rams’ resurgence to get back into the Premier League this term.

The midfielder has been playing for the country’s youth teams since U16 level and is tipped to return to Stamford Bridge in the future to become the next Lampard.

Mount was instrumental in Derby’s Carabao Cup win over Manchester United at Old Trafford last month and has already made 15 appearances for Derby this season.  At the age of only 19, Mount has looked composed and calm on the field with an exceptional work rate.

Moussa Sissoko was Tottenham’s unsung hero in West Ham victory

Tottenham supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team make it four Premier League victories in a row at the weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with London rivals West Ham on Saturday off the back of wins over Brighton, Huddersfield Town, and Cardiff City in their preceding three league games, and thus full of confidence ahead of their trip to the London Stadium. And the North Londoners emerged victorious from a tight encounter with Erik Lamela’s effort just before half time sealing a 1-0 win for Spurs, thus moving them up to fourth place in the Premier League table.

As such, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been heaping praise on goal-scorer and thus matchwinner Lamela, who has really proven his worth to Pochettino in the early phase of the season.

The Argentine bagged his fifth goal of the campaign in victory on Saturday, and while he has thus earned many plaudits for his exploits at the London Stadium, it was the display of Moussa Sissoko, who provided the assist for the winger’s header, which has gone unnoticed by many.

The France international has hardly enjoyed the best of times at Tottenham since his move from Newcastle United back in 2016, with just 87 appearances to his name, yet he was given the nod for the second successive time in the Premier League by Pochettino on Saturday, and he certainly repaid his manager’s faith with a mightily impressive display.

Not only was it his excellent delivery from the right which enabled Lamela to guide his header past Hammers goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, but Sissoko produced a brilliant all-round display in having 75 touches of the ball, only two players had more, while his 94% pass success rate underlined that he was efficient with the ball and sought to get Spurs moving up the field.

In fact, none of the Tottenham starters recorded a higher pass success rate than the 29-year-old, while no one successfully completed more dribbles than the Frenchman as well with four over the course of the 90 minutes, the same tally as matchwinner Lamela – clearly, Sissoko’s renewed confidence prompted a much-improved display.

Ultimately, the France international has endured a tough time since his move to Spurs two years ago, and good performances have been few and far between – yet Saturday’s was up there as one of his best in a Tottenham shirt.

And while in-form Lamela deserves plaudits for grabbing what turned out to be the winner, it was Sissoko’s pinpoint delivery from which he netted, while the Frenchman also carried a huge threat throughout his 89 minutes on the pitch to suggest that the £16.2 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) was their unsung hero at the London Stadium.

Burnley should swoop on local rivals to snap up £4.5m-rated midfield talent

Burnley manager Sean Dyche is hoping to keep building on what has been an excellent few years in charge at Turf Moor.

However, this season has began with something of a struggle, with only two wins from their opening nine leaving the Clarets down in 13th place and looking somewhat off the pace after being demolished by Man City last time out.

Dyche and his team deserve credit though in big amounts. Yet to spend massive sums on players, and simply utilising their players to the best of their abilities, the Clarets are one of few kids in the top flight who are inclined to look into the Championship to add talent.

And one man we think that the Turf Moor club could look to sign is Blackburn Rovers star Bradley Dack, who has made a superb start to the Championship season following so much success in League One last time out.

Valued at £4.5m on Transfermarkt, the former Gillingham man looks to have all the ability in the world to make it to the top flight, and with six goals to his name already this term, his stock is certainly continuing to rise.

Dack possesses bags of ability, and has the creative nouse about him to unlock even the tightest of defences. Excellent on the dead ball too, Dack would certainly be a quality addition to the top flight, and would no doubt fit right in at Burnley as they once again battle the drop.

Flashback: Garry Monk leaves Leeds

We recently recounted the appointment of Garry Monk as manager of Leeds back in June 2016.

Monk had just come from Swansea, where he had been fairly successful in the Premier League. He joined Leeds with a lot of anticipation from fans, who hoped this man would restore pride back in the club.

And it is fair to say that the former Swansea player delivered a lot to those eager Leeds fans, guiding The Whites to their joint highest finish in over a decade in the Championship of seventh place, as well as the quarter final of the League Cup.

However, shortly after new Chairman Andrea Radrizzani was announced at the end of the season, Monk left his post as manager of Leeds after disputes regarding his new contract. This came as a shock to many at the club, after a successful first season at Elland Road.

Leeds fans were greatly disappointed by the news, and struggled to believe that the club could attract another manager. With that said, there were still some fans that were very vitriolic, and were critical of Monk’s actions and motives.

This is what the fans had to say:

Ambitious raid on Juventus for Medhi Benatia would provide Everton with dream Kurt Zouma upgrade

Everton continued to showcase their improvement under Marco Silva this season with a convincing 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion which saw Richarlison steal the show once again.

The Brazilian boy wonder has been an absolute revelation since arriving at Goodison Park; in just nine appearances he has already managed to surpass his goal scoring tally from last season with six goals thus far.

It’s a phenomenal opening which has served to justify the Toffees decision to sign him for a whopping £40 million in the summer, and his performances have stolen the headlines in the blue half of Merseyside.

But it’s important to remember that Silva completed a handful of productive deals in the summer for players who have also made a big difference to the club, including Kurt Zouma.

Everton signed Zouma from Chelsea in a season-long loan deal which was hardly dubbed as a masterstroke signing after his struggle with Stoke City, but he has changed perceptions with his glowing start to life at Everton.

Zouma has established himself as a mainstay at the heart of Everton’s back four, but if he continues to perform at the consistently high level he has reached so far there is no doubt Maurizio Sarri will be eager to use him in Chelsea’s first-team next season.

With that in mind, Marcel Brands must begin his scouting mission for a new defender in the coming months in case he is unable or unwilling to secure a permanent deal for Zouma, and one man who should be on his radar is Medhi Benatia.

On paper that is an incredibly ambitious move, but a recent report from Italian media outlet Calciomercato suggests that the Toffees have a slim chance of signing him in the future.

According to the report, Benatia (valued at £20.7 million by Transfermarkt) is becoming frustrated with his lack of first-team opportunities and could be tempted by the prospect of a club who are willing to offer first-team football.

With just 4 starts under his belt this season and competition from the likes of Leonardo Bonucci and veteran Giorgio Chiellini standing in his way, it seems that the 6’3″ centre-back will be forced to contend with more of a bit-part role than he would ideally like with the Old Lady.

But considering his wealth of experience at the top level, suitability to the Premier League and wonderful defensive talent, there is no doubt that he would be one of the first names on the team-sheet at Everton.

The Toffees have already proven that they can attract talented players from prestigious clubs following the arrival of Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes and Bernard, so they should have every chance of securing a deal for Benatia if he remains dissatisfied with his role at Juventus at the end of the season.

Tottenham fans are not happy with their side’s NFL merchandise

[ad_pod ]

Unhappy Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to ridicule the club they support in hilarious fashion, after Spurs’ official account revealed that they would be selling their own NFL jersey with ‘Kane 10’ on the back.

Having agreed to host NFL games at their new stadium (when it’s finally finished, that is), it is evident that the north London club are keen to strengthen their American football roots even more with their latest announcement.

However, away from the marketing aspect of the game, fans of the club have reacted with scrutiny, as they feel the collaborative shirt is an embarrassment – even more so at the recommended retail price of £95!

Whilst it may be a perfectly reasonable attempt from Daniel Levy and co to solidify their relationship with their business partners, the best thing about the whole arrangement has been the reaction from Spurs fans, who have come up with some hilarious responses…

Revealed: 67% of Swansea fans want Wilfried Bony to start vs Norwich

[ad_pod ]

According to a recent Football FanCast poll, the majority of Swansea fans would like to see Graham Potter start striker Wilfried Bony against Norwich on Saturday.

Attacking midfielder Bersant Celina was due to link up with the Kosovan national team for matches against Malta and Azerbaijan during this international break, but he was forced to stay in Wales for treatment on a groin injury.

Wales Online now report though that Potter is hopeful the 22-year-old will be fit to play a part against the current league leaders when they visit the Liberty Stadium. However, this may mean that the summer signing is not fit to start the game, and Swansea fans are clearly hopeful that it will be Bony chosen to replace him if this is the case.

The Ivory Coast international replaced Celina late on in the Swans’ last game against Bolton, but he could be included from the start alongside the in-form Oliver McBurnie to give Potter’s side a frightening attacking threat.

Bony has recently returned from nine months out after he damaged knee ligaments in a Premier League game against Leicester back in February. The 29-year-old is a top striker though and, now in his second spell with Swansea, he has netted 38 times in 89 appearances for the club.

Charlton fans lavish praise on captain Jason Pearce after winner vs Burton Albion

[ad_pod ]

Charlton fans on Twitter were delighted with their captain Jason Pearce after his late winner secured victory away at Burton Albion on Tuesday evening to keep the Addicks at sixth in the League One table.

Lee Bowyer’s side were forced to come from behind after Burton’s Lucas Akins opened the scoring from the penalty spot 25 minutes in. Just seven minutes later though referee Ross Joyce evened things up by awarding Charlton a spot-kick of their own, which 21-year-old striker Karlan Grant duly dispatched.

The Playmaker FC squad decided to wind-up some unsuspecting Brazil fans at the Emirates on Saturday night. Watch the hilarious results in the video below…

The two teams looked set to take a share of the points before the 6ft 1in tall Pearce snatched the win with an 88th minute header, despite Burton being arguably the better team over the course of the game. The 30-year-old’s first goal of the season gave the Addicks their fourth win on the bounce and clearly pleased the travelling fans, as well as those on Twitter.
