Arsenal Must Reluctantly Unleash £25m "Warrior"

Arsenal are back in Premier League action today, but face a monumental task to maintain their unlikely title push as they travel to Newcastle United.

It is a clash that pits the third-most in-form team in the division, the hosts, against Mikel Arteta's threadbare outfit, in what could well be one of the matches of the season. It was this fixture last season that essentially ended the Gunners' chances of top four, so they will be keen to exact revenge to keep pace with Manchester City.

However, they will have to do so without either of their starting centre-backs, who are both set to be out yet again. William Saliba continues his lengthy and unsuccessful recovery from his longstanding back injury, whilst Gabriel Magalhaes is their latest casualty, having been forced off in their win over Chelsea.

Although Jakub Kiwior might have impressed on his full league debut, earning a 7.0 rating, he will now be thrust into the deep end and potentially partnered with the struggling Rob Holding.

The Poland international had been drafted in to mitigate the former Bolton Wanderers dud, who had disappointed of late, but it seems there is no rest for the unfortunate north London side.

However, one option could prevail, in that instead of starting the 27-year-old, Arteta could opt to take a leaf out of the Scotland national team's book and reluctantly deploy Kieran Tierney in the heart of defence. Anything to keep Holding out of the team.

Will Kieran Tierney start vs Newcastle United?

Having seen his play time limited this campaign due to injuries and the emergence of Oleksandr Zinchenko, the former Celtic man has still managed 23 league appearances, although most have been from the bench.

His 6.68 average rating in the league is somewhat unfair given he has averaged just 28 minutes per game.

For Scotland however, in their recent EURO qualification matches, this rises to 7.00, where he averages two clearances, 1.5 tackles and one interception per game from centre back, via Sofascore.

To pair this with an 82% pass accuracy, the creative assets of the £25m man could come in handy for a side that will seek to dominate the ball and build from the back.

For comparison, only one of Holding's last five matches has merited above a 6.5 rating, with the sole outlier only bolstered by a consolation goal against the Cityzens.

Ashley Cole has spoke highly of the Scotland international in the past, telling Sky Sports (via The Metro) that his personality could prove important for these big games: "When he’s in the team, they are a different side. He’s willing to defend, he’s that kind of leader and warrior they need in this team."

Perhaps Tierney could prove the Chelsea legend right, by showcasing that he is not the best of a bad bunch remaining, and instead worthy of a place in and around the team for next season too.

Wolves Had A Surprise Hero vs Man United

Wolverhampton Wanderers had to settle with defeat at Old Trafford, as Julen Lopetegui’s side lost 2-0 against top-four hopefuls Manchester United.

A goal in the first half from Anthony Martial drew first blood, followed by a late blow from the newly returning Alejandro Garnacho that sealed Wolves’ fate in Manchester.

The visitors succumbed to a wave of pressure from Erik ten Hag’s team, with the Red Devils registering 3.20 xG and firing a total of 27 shots towards goal – as per Sofascore.

Lopetegui’s side mediated the game through possession, controlling 52% of the proceedings, however, could not settle the attacking threat of the hosts, who were hungry for goals following back-to-back 1-0 defeats in their previous two.

With survival confirmed, the defeat didn’t have fatal repercussions for Wolves, however following Crystal Palace’s win, the Molineux-outfit were unable to remain level on points with the Londoners in 12th, leaving them in 13th with just two games to go.

There was speculation prior to the game as to whether Lopetegui would make alterations going forward, with his side being the lowest scorers in the league, however, it was a contrasting change that saved Wolves from potential embarrassment at the Theatre of Dreams.

The former Real Madrid boss shocked fans as he handed Daniel Bentley his Premier League debut in goal ahead of Jose Sa, following his arrival at Molineux in January from Championship representatives Bristol City.

How did Daniel Bentley perform vs Manchester United?

At 29 years of age, the Basildon-born keeper was granted his first appearance in the Premier League by Lopetegui as the end of the season is in sight.

It was a dramatic occasion to be introduced to the top division, however, the Englishman showed no doubt of his quality in the Manchester sunshine with a “brilliant” display, as per journalist Chris Phillips.

Described as being “very calm” by his manager who spoke to the media after the game, Bentley kept the hosts at bay for the majority of the game, denying a number of efforts lashed at him in the bid to increase the scoreline.

The shot-stopper, who took 48 touches, gained an impressive Sofascore match rating of 8.0, making him his team’s top performer on the day by a long stretch, with Ruben Neves scoring 7.3 as second-best for the visitors.

Lopetegui executed an impressive switch between the posts exquisitely, with Bentley making eight saves in 90 minutes, as well as preventing 0.48 xG in what was a high-pressure fixture considering United’s desire to win after some disappointing form.

United registered nine shots on target in the game, with four of those being deemed as big chances in what could’ve been a bloodbath for the visitors to deal with had their 'keeper not stepped up to the task.

It wasn’t just praise from his own camp that the 29-year-old received, but from United captain Bruno Fernandes who told BBC after the game that his team simply had to “compliment him.”

“Their 'keeper had a really good game to keep Wolves in the game. It wasn’t a case of wasting our chances. Their 'keeper did a really good job.”

Despite the result, it’s high praise for the debutant who relished in the pressure and occasion at Old Trafford, giving Lopetegui a headache regarding selection for the final two games.

Patterson hits top gear after Borthwick prang

The attention was on Durham’s Scott Borthwick but he ran himself out for 2 and Steven Patterson then drove home Yorkshire’s advantage with 6 for 56

At a time when a potential home Test debut for Scott Borthwick against Pakistan has been widely floated, it is perhaps inevitable that the Durham wicket that gained most attention was the one where Steven Patterson just vaguely stood there at the end of his run and happened to get in the way.Borthwick, who began the match with a Championship average top side of 80, has had a prolific season, in contrast to the current incumbent as England’s No. 3, Nick Compton, who has mustered 151 runs at 16.77 in a troubled season for both Middlesex and England.Patterson, one of the stingier bowlers around, was probably silently berating himself for allowing Borthwick something as self-indulgent as a front-foot drive when the ball was parried at mid-off by the diving Andrew Gale. Borthwick first held the pose – as if displaying his England credentials for a dozing photographer – then sensed a single, aware that Gale is carrying a few niggles and is a bit exposed in the field these days. But there was a Patterson roundabout to negotiate and Borthwick was still a foot short of the crease, sliding in on his knees, when Gale’s direct hit struck the stumps. The physio had to come on to give Gale attention, but it was only a graze and he was safe in the knowledge that he had pronounced he has not become an automatic single just yet. That was England affairs done and dusted, Borthwick left to curse a scorecard showing two runs in six balls. Attention turned to the Championship, the arena in which, day in day out, Patterson proves his worth. This time, with career-best figures of 6 for 56 to celebrate, and Durham dismissed for 172, he might get a share of that headline.Chris Rushworth, who two seasons ago took nine wickets in an innings, did his best to upstage Patterson late on, serving up a draught of local defiance. Shaven pate shimmering in rare evening sunshine, he claimed all four Yorkshire wickets to fall, including Alex Lees for 71 and Patterson, loping out as nightwatchman, for a second-ball duck, to leave Gale and Gary Ballance playing charily for the close. With the bat, Jack Burnham stuck it out, his 49 from 134 balls representing a mature contribution in a decent first full season, showing the sort of resilience that is expected from this Durham side, no matter how inexperienced. He drove pleasantly at times, but he never drove Patterson, wisely settling for suspicious pushes into the leg side.”Patto does what Patto does,” his coach, Jason Gillespie, is fond of saying. He does not so much hit a length as beat it into submission at speeds just above the motorway speed limit, but not quite fast enough to make the camera flash. But when he hits the seam he can change lane as sharply as the best of them. On a nibbly Chester-le-Street seamer, he was a permanent irritation: as nagging as a wasp in the kitchen, the thing you can’t quite remember, the noise in the car you can’t quite place.Every team needs a Patto, someone to throw the ball to when the pressure is on, and for Yorkshire the pressure was at maximum. They have four senior pace bowlers absent – Jack Brooks, Ryan Sidebottom, David Willey and Liam Plunkett (the latter with England) – their hugely promising fast bowler, Matt Fisher, is plagued by hamstring trouble, and England have also called up the legspin of Adil Rashid.Add Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, and Yorkshire had eight missing in all. Two seamers were on Yorkshire Championship debut, Ben Coad and Josh Shaw, although Shaw had at least had some experience at Gloucestershire, where he has been called back from an intended season’s loan. With one point separating Lancashire, Durham and Yorkshire at the top of Division One, the table is a triumph for the north, although this being the north, the did curb its regional pride with the observation that Lancashire are in a false position.Durham were reasonably placed at 74 for 2 when Patterson struck for the first time with his second ball after lunch, having Mark Stoneman lbw, pushing well forward. Then came a run of 3 for 8 in 18 balls: Michael Richardson edged a brute of a ball which spat off a length; Paul Collingwood, who seemed intent on breaking him early, managed one cover drive but then mistimed a wide one to backward point; and Ryan Pringle’s off stump was removed as he groped forward.Coad and Shaw both acquitted themselves well, and Tim Bresnan produced a decent delivery of his own to have Usman Arshad caught at the wicket, but Gale ran Patterson for 14 overs in all, a spell broken by lunch, his value never more apparent. A brief second spell went unrewarded before Gale turned to him again after tea and he ended the innings courtesy of two off-side catches. A bowler just doing his job, and doing it well.

Man United May Get Deal For £52m Target

Journalist Jacque Talbot has claimed that Khephren Thuram could be sold for less than his €60m (£52m) asking price amid Manchester United links.

What are the latest Man United and Khephren Thuram transfer rumours?

It will no doubt be a question of who will join the Red Devils this summer, as opposed to who could join Erik ten Hag and co.

Indeed, the Premier League side have already been linked with a number of exciting player in the past few months and the rumours will only heat up as the summer market approaches and domestic football finishes for the season.

For instance, as per Calciomercato, Man United are keen on attacker Marcus Thuram but it seems as though his brother is also on the club's radar.

While talking about these rumours on his YouTube, Talbot confirmed the interest and revealed that Nice will hope to ask for £52m for Thuram.

However, he did add that if a bidding war doesn't ensue, then Gladbach could be open to lowering their valuation to around €45m (£40m).

He explained: "Obviously they want to keep him but they want to get 60 million euros for Thuram. Right at the pinnacle [of his career] as well. You know, 22, just made the France squad.

"It has been briefed 60 million euros. Our understanding, it's dependent on proposals on the table for him. So if say Man United, Newcastle, and Liverpool just supposedly all went for him then maybe it would be like 60 million euros.

“But if the level of interest was not as strong as that, and it was more other clubs or clubs lowballing a little bit, they probably would accept something like 45 million euro as well for Thuram.

"A lot of the prices you'll see will be dependent on the number of proposals on the table for the player."

Who else has been linked with Thuram?

While it might sound nice in theory that Man United could land Thuram at a cut price, it doesn't seem that likely when you think a number of teams will probably be in for him this summer.

For instance, Premier League rivals Newcastle United, and Liverpool have been linked with the player, while German side RB Leipzig are also touted as possible destinations (via RMC Sport).

With that being the case, there is every chance this develops into a bit of a saga with bids coming in from multiple teams, consequently allowing Nice to demand that £52m fee.

Lyth's acrobatics complete thrilling Yorkshire comeback

Yorkshire Vikings recorded a remarkable victory over Birmingham Bears to keep their T20 Blast hopes alive after the visitors collapsed dramatically in the final overs

Yorkshire Vikings recorded a remarkable victory over Birmingham Bears to keep their T20 Blast hopes alive after the visitors collapsed dramatically in the final overs.Having been set 157 to win by at Headingley, Birmingham looked set to move to within a point of North Group leaders Northamptonshire with victory when they required 16 to win from 13 balls with six wickets in hand. But David Willey and Tim Bresnan bowled superbly at the death before Adam Lyth’s acrobatic fielding on the boundary denied Ateeq Javid the boundary needed off the final ball to tie a topsy-turvy encounter.Despite a huge six from Lyth in Rikki Clarke’s opening over, Yorkshire struggled to find the boundary in their six-over powerplay after winning the toss as the Birmingham seamers restricted them to just five boundaries. The frustration got the better of both Lyth and Willey, with the pair both being caught in the ring off the bowling of former Yorkshire paceman Oliver Hannon-Dalby as the hosts fell to 34 for 2 early on.Captain Alex Lees offered some resistance with 23 before being bowled by leg-spinner Josh Poysden, leaving senior duo Kane Williamson and Gary Ballance to rebuild through the middle overs. The pair added 78 for the fourth wicket from just 59 balls before Ballance – who was celebrating his recall to the England Test squad to face Pakistan next week – was bowled for 33 by Clarke in the 18th over.Williamson followed him back to the dug-out after running himself out for 48 in the final over, but some lusty blows from Bresnan and Jack Leaning lifted the Vikings to a total of 156 for six. Hannon-Dalby proved to be the pick of the bowlers, taking two for 33 from his four overs.Birmingham’s reply got off to the worst possible start as Sam Hain was adjudged LBW after attempting to shoulder arms to Willey’s first legal delivery, but the Bears recovered thanks to a 50-partnership between Ian Bell and William Porterfield. The former hit four fours on his way to 30 from 26 deliveries, but he fell victim to Adil Rashid in the leg-spinners first over as he advanced down the wicket and was stumped by Andrew Hodd. And the England limited overs star was not finished there as he removed Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade for just six on his Blast debut with Lees taking a simple catch at backward point.A stand of 60 between Laurie Evans (37) and Porterfield (48) looked to have swung the game back in Birmingham’s favour, but their departures sparked an almighty collapse that left Javid needing to hit a four from Bresnan’s final ball to force a tie.His aerial drive over mid-on looked to have done the trick, only for Lyth to stretch his body over the boundary to drag the ball back inside the rope and force a run out as Birmingham lost their final six wickets for 13 runs in 13 balls.

Woakes stars but Pakistan stretch ahead

A second five-wicket haul from Chris Woakes – giving him ten in the match for the first time in Tests – provided the spearhead for England’s efforts to wrest back control after Pakistan had secured a valuable first-inning lead

The Report by Alan Gardner16-Jul-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsChris Woakes claimed his tenth wicket of the match when he removed Sarfraz Ahmed•Getty Images

If there were any doubts about how well prepared Pakistan were to challenge England in this series, they should have now been dispelled. The progress made by Alastair Cook’s side has hinged on their ability to seize key moments in a Test but at Lord’s they have come up against experienced and skilful opposition who refused to buckle when the pressure mounted.A second five-wicket haul from Chris Woakes – giving him ten in the match for the first time in Tests – provided the spearhead for England’s efforts to wrest back control after Pakistan had secured a valuable first-innings lead on a pitch that was beginning to exhibit signs of variable bounce. Punchy 40s from Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed kept England at arm’s length, however, and they were facing a target approaching 300 and prolonged fourth-innings examination at the hands of Yasir Shah in order to win the first Test.Sarfraz was dropped on 36 by Jonny Bairstow, another unwanted entry on his wicketkeeping ledger, and his seventh-wicket partnership with Yasir, promoted up the order after taking 6 for 72 in England’s innings, took the score on by another 40 valuable runs. Woakes then chipped out Sarfraz and Wahab Riaz in his third demanding spell as stumps approached to leave the contest finely poised.England have won only one of their last five Tests at Lord’s and, with the sun beating down on basking MCC members, they had to fight tooth and nail to prevent another match drifting away from them. None of the five completed first-class matches on the ground this season had produced a result – no team had even managed 20 wickets – but that sequence is set to end. When Pakistan were 60 for 4 during the afternoon England had visions of inducing a complete collapse but a strange, staccato innings from Younis Khan nevertheless managed to hold things together. Frequently jumping into position, playing the ball with one or both legs in the air and appearing about as comfortable as a man trying to fight his way through a hedge, he survived two lbw reviews on DRS and battled his way to 25 from 95 balls before being the fifth man out, chopping Moeen Ali on to his stumps during the evening session. His 69-run partnership with Shafiq prevented Pakistan from being ambushed after they had lost 3 for 16, including captain Misbah-ul-Haq for a two-ball duck. Shafiq was by far the more fluent, although he needed some luck early on, seeing a delivery from Moeen miss everything after spinning inside a drive and then edging Jake Ball wide of a motionless James Vince at third slip. His next delivery was crunched more authoritatively through point for four more and he mixed attack and defence well until Woakes speared a delivery between bat and pad to hit the off bail.Woakes was curiously held back by Cook, despite taking six wickets in the first innings, but he made his first breakthrough after lunch with a well-executed plan to have Shan Masood taken at slip. Having bowled a series of deliveries coming back into the left-hander, then drawing him into the drive with one pitched up, Woakes shortened his length and pushed the ball across to take the outside edge. With Azhar Ali and Younis becalmed, Woakes struck again. For the second time in match, Azhar left the field shaking his head after a failed with a review against a tight lbw decision, Hawk-Eye siding with umpire Joel Wilson’s decision that the ball would have gone on to clip leg stump.Cook had brought Moeen into the attack without delay, perhaps as a show of faith in his spinner, and he even burned a review for a bat-pad catch against Azhar two balls before lunch. Moeen returned in the afternoon and he gained a measure of revenge for his first-innings chasing by Misbah when Pakistan’s captain attempted to impose himself again and sent his second ball high towards deep midwicket, where Alex Hales took a good running catch.Pakistan’s top order had been corralled into a corner, with England taking three wickets at a cost of 20 runs in 15 overs after lunch. They used their second review shortly after against Younis, who had succeeded in getting a bit of bat on a delivery from Ball to save him from being lbw; and it was then nearly 75 for 5, when Wilson eventually raised his finger to Younis, who jumped across to be hit in front of leg stump in Steven Finn’s third over. DRS overturned the umpire’s decision this time, with the ball shown to be going ever-so-slightly high and wide. The morning had been unquestionably Pakistan’s, after they gained a 67-run lead on first innings and then increased that beyond three figures for the loss of Mohammad Hafeez – whose ill-judged slash at Stuart Broad resulted in a sharp catch to second slip – in 17 overs against the new ball.England would have hoped to get closer to Pakistan’s first-innings total but Yasir took his tally to six wickets and Woakes was left stranded as the last three wickets fell 12 runs inside four overs.Misbah began with a combination of Wahab’s pace and Yasir’s wiles and the pair saw off England’s innings within 40 minutes of the first session. Broad struck one boundary off Wahab but was then worked over by a succession of short balls, before a brace of yorkers ended his stay. The first flew through past leg stump but Broad did not heed the warning and hung back again to be bowled off his boot next ball.Finn has been known to block up an end and Woakes was happy to let him have the strike but he fell to Yasir, trapped in front of leg stump by a ball that skidded on. That gave Yasir the first six-for by a Pakistan spinner in England since Mushtaq Ahmed at The Oval in 1996. It was also the 82nd wicket of his short Test career – the most by any player after 13 matches.Ball sliced a four off Yasir for his first Test runs but he was run out from the first ball of the next over, with Woakes pushing for two to retain the strike. Wahab completed the dismissal at the bowler’s end and Pakistan were congratulating themselves on a job well done before the third umpire confirmed Ball’s fate.

Rangers Could Have A Future Star In Murray Park Teenage Gem

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly set to allow a number of their B team prospects to depart the club at the end of their contracts this summer.

The likes of Tony Weston and Charley Lindsay, among others, are set to be moved on by the Light Blues but they could be on the verge of losing a talent who they wanted to keep hold of.

Robbie Ure's deal is due to expire at the end of the month and Football Insider reported, earlier this year, that the teenager wants to leave the club after being offered new terms for less money than he is currently on.

The 19-year-old prospect has plundered 21 goals and ten assists in 43 appearances for the academy and first-team combined in the 2022/23 campaign and his impressive statistics in front of goal indicate that it would be a blow for the Gers to lose him on a free transfer this summer.

Ure has scored once in two senior outings for Michael Beale's side to date and has shown that he has the potential to be a senior striker at Ibrox in the future, which could save the club from spending millions in the transfer market on a new number nine from elsewhere.

Glasgow Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Whilst the possible exit of the prolific teenage marksman could lead some supporters wanting Rangers to invest in another young centre-forward, the Scottish giants may already have a future star who could make the step up to Beale's team further down the line in James Graham.

Who is James Graham?

The 18-year-old gem is another B team striker who has played a backup role to Ure in the academy side this season, having made the step up from the U18s.

He joined from Ross County in the summer of 2020 and then-Head of Academy Craig Mulholland claimed that the teenager was being eyed by clubs in the Premier League and elsewhere in Scotland, which suggested that it was something of a coup to land his signature.

Mulholland also described the ace as a "dynamic, quick and tenacious forward with excellent energy and finishing abilities" and the youngster has showcased some of these qualities in the Lowland League this season.

Graham has racked up five goals and one assist in just 1,066 minutes of action in the division, which works out as a goal contribution every 177 minutes – or once every 1.96 matches.

His form has clearly not gone unnoticed at Ibrox as the club recently rewarded him with a new contract until the end of the 2023/24 campaign, keeping him at the club whilst the likes of Lindsay and Weston are released.

This indicates that they see potential in the teenager and Ure's exit could allow him to flourish as the first-choice option at the top end of the pitch for the B team next term, which could speed up his development and lead to him breaking into the senior squad in the future, thus saving Beale and the club's hierarchy millions in future transfer windows.
