Journalist and transfer expert Dean Jones believes Aston Villa can now sign better midfield options than Matteo Guendouzi in the summer window.

Has Guendouzi been linked with Villa?

The Villans have enjoyed a huge turnaround in fortunes this season, initially looking like potential relegation fodder under Steven Gerrard before being transformed by the hugely impressive Unai Emery. They have won their last four Premier League games, meaning that they are suddenly sixth in the table and in with a wonderful chance of qualifying for Europe, despite having been left in 17th place upon Gerrard's exit.

All of a sudden, this feels like an exciting time for Villa supporters, as with money likely to be available for new signings in the summer transfer window, this is a great opportunity for Emery to build a truly formidable squad moving forward and make them a true force in English football again.

One player who has been linked with a move to Villa Park in the past is Guendouzi, who has matured into a key player for Marseille in recent times, having moved there from Arsenal where he often displayed his petulance – ironically while under Emery's wing. He has made 28 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, as well as playing once for France at the 2022 World Cup.

Could Villans sign someone better?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that Villa could now actually look at superior options than the 23-year-old, even though a move could still materialise:

"It'll be interesting to see what Unai Emery makes of the idea of something like this, and if he does think it will work, you kind of have to trust him.

"Personally, I think they could do better than that. But obviously, in the team model that they're putting together, he might be a good fit."

The fact that Villa are now being deemed as too good for Guendouzi says so much about the progress under Emery, with the seven-cap France international someone who has been described as a "great player" by former Germany international Arne Friedrich.

While there are alternative midfielders out there than the ex-Arsenal man – Villa have been linked with a move for Sporting CP talisman Pedro Goncalves, for example – he could still be a really effective signing, as he would arrive with Premier League and European experience.

He has enjoyed an 88.4% pass completion rate in Ligue 1 this season (no current Villa player has a better rate in the Premier League), and we believe he is someone who could enhance Villa's depth and be a long-term addition to the squad.

Southampton could "attract" Graham Potter as their new manager in the summer, as long as they avoid relegation from the Premier League, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Ruben Selles is set to take charge of Southampton until the end of the season, however after a promising start, defeating the likes of Chelsea and Leicester City, the manager has struggled in recent weeks, with his side losing their last three games.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has previously claimed that Selles is "tailor-made" to stay with the Saints if they are relegated from the top flight, due to his previous track record of working with young players, however they may also look at bringing in someone new. Football Insider have recently reported that Potter has set his sights on taking the manager's job at St Mary's, as he believes the club would be a better fit for him than Leicester City, who are also interested.

Now, in an interview with GiveMeSport, Jones has claimed that Southampton could win the race for the 47-year-old, as long as they avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The journalist said: "In terms of his reputation, he needs to be very careful that his next job doesn't go wrong. From a professional point of view, he won't want to stay out of the game too long either because he'll want to get back to work and start showing why he was considered such a good coach in the first place at Brighton. I don’t think it’s impossible for a club of Southampton’s size to attract him, but obviously, that means staying up this season and at the moment, that's not looking good."

Should Southampton appoint Graham Potter?

Unfortunately, it is now looking very unlikely that the Saints will be playing Premier League football next season, sitting four points from safety, with just seven games to go.

If Selles' side do manage to stay up, the current manager may feel a little aggrieved if he is not offered the job on a permanent basis, as it would be a remarkable achievement, but Potter would be an excellent appointment.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion boss gained a reputation for developing young players during his time at the Amex Stadium, which would be a valuable asset at a club like Southampton, who rely heavily on bringing in youth products, such as Gavin Bazunu and Romeo Lavia last summer alone.

Hailed as a "brilliant coach" by members of the media, the Englishman transformed the fortunes of Brighton, taking them from 17th in the Premier League all the way up to ninth, and he would be more than capable of doing a similar job at St Mary's.

Those woes could yet be compounded even further amid recent speculation surrounding the fitness of influential playmaker, Bruno Fernandes, with the 28-year-old having been withdrawn due to injury in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final triumph over Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Portugal international has since been pictured wearing a protective boot following the weekend's shootout win, with United supporters likely to be dreading the loss of a player who has previously been deemed "irreplaceable" by club legend, Gary Neville.

The former Sporting CP ace has remarkably been a real everpresent since his £47m arrival back in January 2020, having thus far missed just a solitary game through injury/illness in that time, including starting 48 games in all competitions so far this season.

To potentially be without the £240k-per-week maestro would certainly represent a real blow for the Old Trafford outfit ahead of the climax of the season, with Ten Hag having limited options to fill that creative void after previously losing Donny van de Beek for the season.

There is the option of deploying all-action star Marcel Sabitzer in that playmaking berth, although the former Ajax boss will likely need further alternatives if Fernandes is to be out of action, hence potentially turning to academy gem, Isak Hansen-Aaroen.

Who is Isak Hansen-Aaroen?

The teenage Norwegian has showcased his exciting talent after contributing three goals and one assist in 21 Premier League 2 games so far this season, having typically emulated Fernandes by operating in an attacking midfield role.

The former Tromso ace – who signed for the Red Devils back in 2020 – has already enjoyed a taste of life at senior level after featuring seven times for his previous employers despite his youth, having also turned out for Ten Hag's side in the friendly meetings with Real Betis and Cadiz during the World Cup break.

The 18-year-old also showed his quality against senior opposition in the EFL Trophy earlier in the campaign, notably averaging 1.3 key passes and 1.3 tackles per game from his three outings to illustrate his ability both in and out of possession.

While not quite as good a record as what Fernandes has enjoyed in the Premier League – the experienced ace averaging 3.1 and two for the same two metrics, respectively – Hansen-Aaroen does appear to mirror the United man's creative spark and work rate out of possession, having been hailed as a 'flair player with a tenacious streak' by the club's official website.

The £1.1k-per-week starlet has also earned notable comparisons to another top-flight playmaker in the form of compatriot and Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard, with former Tromso teammate Yttergard Jenssen stating:

"I realised that this was a talented boy already in the first training. He has some skills that are completely raw. He's so playful with the ball. And the way he moves on a football field… There's something artistic about it. He is a bit reminiscent of Martin Odegaard."

That glowing praise is an indication of just what an exciting prospect Ten Hag has on his hands, with the hope being that the FA Youth Cup winner can eventually make his mark in the first team.

Tottenham Hotspur are now expected to make a move for Lille striker Jonathan David this summer, according to recent reports from France.

Will Tottenham need to sign a striker this summer?

There is every chance that Tottenham will need to bring in a new striker in the summer window, as Harry Kane's future remains up in the air, amid interest from the likes of Manchester United, Bayern Munich and even Chelsea.

Spurs have already started to run the rule over potential replacements for the striker, with Brighton & Hove Albion forward Evan Ferguson believed to be of interest, while they have also kept tabs on Brentford's Ivan Toney.

The Lilywhites have been linked with a move for David in the past, and given the uncertainty surrounding Kane's future, they are considering whether to launch a summer bid.

According to a report from L'Equipe (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are expected to make a move for the Lille marksman as soon as they appoint a new manager, and his current club are resigned to losing him in the upcoming window.

The report details that Spurs have started to look at a number of options to replace Kane, and the 23-year-old fits the bill, although there will be stiff competition for his signature, with a number of Premier League sides also plotting moves.

Chelsea and Manchester United are listed as potential suitors, while there is also a possibility the Canadian could remain in Ligue 1, given that Paris Saint-Germain are named as an interested party.

Should Tottenham sign David?

Priority number one for Tottenham should undoubtedly be to get Kane to sign a new contract, given just how important he is to the team, scoring 24 Premier League goals this season, the second-highest amount in the league.

However, if Spurs are forced to enter the market for a new forward, David could be a fantastic replacement, having enjoyed a fantastic season in Ligue 1, scoring 21 goals, second to only Kylian Mbappe in the French top flight.

The £36k-per-week marksman has been hailed as "one of the best strikers in the world" by members of the media, and his goal return in France indicates he could go on to be a top Premier League striker.

At 23 years old, the Canada international also has plenty of time to develop even further, though it may be very difficult to win the race for his signature if Tottenham do not have Champions League football to offer next season.

Vincent Kompany will already be making plans for Burnley's summer transfer window following their Championship title win this season, and Coventry City's Viktor Gyokeres is seemingly one player on his shortlist.

Could Burnley sign Gyokeres?

According to Football Insider, the Clarets have joined the race to sign the Sweden international this summer, with Kompany no doubt keen to bolster his attacking options at Turf Moor to avoid an instant return to the second tier next season.

The likes of Everton, Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Fulham are also said to be keen on the 24-year-old frontman, who Coventry are said to be resigned to losing should they fail to achieve promotion to the Premier League, although a playoff spot is still firmly within the Sky Blues' reach.

The former Brighton gem has previously been valued at £20m by Coventry amid his sensational form in the Championship, which has seen him register a hugely impressive 21 goals and 10 assists so far this campaign, averaging a 7.21 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Given that only Josh Brownhill (7.26) would better this average rating in Burnley's squad, it is clear the quality that Gyokeres could add at Turf Moor, especially as no player would come particularly close to the Swede's impressive goal contribution tally.

The powerful striker's superb performances have seen him labelled "unplayable" by teammate Max Biamou, while manager Mark Robins also sang his praises earlier in the campaign.

He said: "He’s not the finished article by any stretch of the imagination but he has some unbelievable ability – power, technique. He has got everything in his locker and that desire and hunger to score goals."

Could Gyokeres replace Tella at Burnley?

Although Burnley look likely to swap places with Southampton this season, given they sit bottom of the Premier League, it could be tough to prise impressive loanee Nathan Tella away from St Mary's this summer, and he would need replacing after he has fired in 17 goals and provided five assists for the Clarets en route to the title.

However, the stats suggest that Gyokeres could potentially be an upgrade on the Saints loanee at Turf Moor should he be signed from Coventry ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Not only did the Swede register more goals and assists than Tella, but he has also averaged more shots (three vs 1.9), key passes (1.8 vs 0.8) and dribbles (2.1 vs 0.9) per game this season and for a technically poorer outfit, which suggests that he could be a significant all-round upgrade in the Clarets attack.

It won't be easy or cheap to prise Gyokeres away from Coventry this summer, given the competition for his signing, but it seems clear that he could be an effective player for Kompany in the top flight.
